Buck Mountain Annual New Year's Day Hike   Thu, Jan 1, 2009, Reg Prouty and Bob Aspholm  
A great bright sunny New year's day greeted 15 of us as we made our way up the West side of Buck Mtn. A cheery group helped Bob and Reg sing "Auld Sang Syne" on the summit. Bob even had all the words written down this year and we were even on the same key! Thanks go out to Jack for leading the hares up first. What a great way to start a fresh new year off! 15

Murphy, Middle and Bennet Lakes   Sat, Jan 3, 2009, Ray Bouchard
We certainly lucked out with a nice sunny day for a change and 6 congenial people to share it. The going was easy because of the crust on the first foot of snow which was then topped off with another 4" of fluff. The area is rich in history including some paint (red iron oxide) pits near Bennett Lake so I'd like to return this summer to do some exploring and maybe check out some of the beaches that I read about.

Introduction to Snowshoe Hike   Sun, Jan 4, 2009, Pat Desbiens and Sandy Yellen  
Cat Mountain was chosen for this beginner snowshoe. Eight participants with varying levels of experienced showed up. Everyone participated to the very best of their ability level with the rewards being a great day to be in the woods plus a clear, fantastic view of Lake George and environs from the summit. Congratulations to Sandy on her first hike as a co-leader - we look forward to having you lead hikes for the Chapter.

Tuesday Outing - Leaders Choice   Tue, Jan 6, 2009, Maureen Coutant
We decided to explore Coles Woods in Glens Falls. When we got there, we chose to use snowshoes as the trails seemed too icy for skis. We had a great walk and conversations and even broke a sweat! We met the GF electrician who was fixing the lights on one of the loops, so at least 2 loops are working. Hopefully, we'll get out for a ski under the lights soon!

High Peak - Basin   Sat, Jan 10, 2009, Jack Whitney and Jean Holcomb  
Despite brutal cold seven folks showed up for this hike. To my astonishment most of them were not peak baggers but simply people who wanted a 17 mile stroll up an exhausting, icy, dangerous summit in below zero temps. Fortunately it was too cold to be windy and Basin rewarded us with beautiful sunshine and the miricle of a marshmellow world all to ourselves. Also to our delight the trail had been broken so our trip was as trouble free as possible. The toughest climbing of the day was on the Shorey Short Cut (what a joke!) In the end we all made it by hanging tough and helping one another. Great going guys!

Ampersand Mountain   Sun, Jan 11, 2009, Steve Mackey
The climb up Ampersand was pretty tough. Heidi said the climb is only a couple of hundred feet less than Cascade. We had a partial view and could see Ampersand Lake, but not the Sewards. Gary had this neat move where he fired a couple of thermoses down the trail. I think if he practices it little bit, it could be a good defense against bears and snakes. I was having a little trouble with my snowshoes and while I was busy studying them, I managed to walk into a blowdown that was about six feet high, (it would have made the highlights of "America's funniest home videos").

Tuesday Outing - Leaders Choice   Tue, Jan 13, 2009, Maureen Coutant
I'd heard great things about the groomed trails here, but had never been able to use them until now. We'd hiked this area a couple of times, so we knew it would be a great ski. The conditions were the best. New snow, freshly groomed, blue sky, and comfortable temperatures. We met the groomer, a volunteer who puts in at least 100 hours on his own equipment, and he told us about a moonlight ski there on Sat Feb 7th. Sounds like fun!

YMG - Phelps   Sat, Jan 17, 2009, Jonathan Lane and Kyle Shollenberger  
Wow, was it cold! But sub-zero temps couldn’t keep us inside. Instead we headed north for colder weather and hiked up a High Peak. We kept moving and stayed warm. It was a little windy at the summit, so we stayed long enough to snap a few photos, then headed back down to where it was “warmer” out of the wind. After returning to the trailhead, it was off to get a well deserved hot meal!

Winter High Peak :Tabletop Mt.   Sat, Jan 24, 2009, Jack Whitney
It was 5 degrees when we started out and the temperatures continued to drop during the day. We had a quick warm-up walk to Marcy Dam, then headed up the trail turning off just before Indian Falls. Taking a short break due to the temperatures we were soon off to the summit. It was blue skies with excellent views on the way up and just off the summit of Tabletop. It was a great but cold day - congratulations to all.

Stillwater Locks Area   Sat, Jan 24, 2009, Rich Crammond
This was a windy cold day and not as much open water as last year. We did enjoy being outside and saw many other kinds of birds such as the hawks, gulls, ducks and many other smaller birds. No eagles! It was nice to hike with good people and share our ADK outing.

Leaders Choice Snowshoe   Sun, Jan 25, 2009, Bill Schwarz
Turns out we did go to Moreau Lake State Park--several new trails have been added from the main parking lot that access recently-acquired state land. This winter, we've had plenty of snow, and below-zero starting temperatures didn't deter six snowshoe enthusiasts who enjoyed the bright sun and views of the lake. Free spirits Bob and Jane went off for their own bushwacking adventure, while the rest of the group walked on water during the return (but there was a foot of ice on the lake!).

Pyramid and Gothics   Sat, Jan 31, 2009, Steve Mackey
The ski conditions were excellent, and the view was as advertised. We had a major storm on the Wednesday before we left, so after the turn for Sawteeth, we got to do a little trail breaking. If you add in a very steep trail, deep powder, and add a few spruce traps to keep things interesting, you get an idea of the climb up Pyramid. I have pretty long legs and when I was breaking trail, I had all I could do getting my leg up high enough to take the next step. Clear blue sky's with cold wind on the summits (Mike got some frost bite on his cheeks). I may make this an annual trip.

Pilot Knob   Sun, Feb 1, 2009, Jack Whitney
Temperatures were in the lower 20's when we started - as we ascended the temperature continued to drop. Taking our time on the way up we stopped at the lookouts, had great views and saw many ice fisherman (like little dots) all over Lake George. Arriving at our final summit, the wind was very blustery and everyone donned face masks, had a quick bite to eat and headed down to a less windy area with the temperature climbing as we descended. Thanks to all who participated on this great day.

Mount Marshall   Sun, Feb 1, 2009, Mike McLean
Had a rather large and rather strong group of climbers but the snow conditions and weather prevented us from making it to the top this day. Made good time to the new lean-to at Herbert Brook and then the real fun began. Snow, deep snow, and even deeper snow made for slow going up Herbert Brook, we are forced to follow the faint remnants of a previous track; straying off the track results in immediate and deep spruce traps. Several folks enjoyed their turns up front. Lost the old track somewhere along the way and by 2pm we are on false summit still .24 miles from the top and our progress painfully slow in the deep snow and spruce traps. Many of the climbers start becoming chilled as the wind whips and the snow falls and the skies darken. Decided to call it a day and make good time back down on the well trodden part, all folks made it back to the parking lot by 6pm. An excellent winter adventure for sure.

Crane Mt. and Crane Pond Loop   Sat, Feb 7, 2009, Ray Bouchard
The day turned out to be great after all. The temps were in the single digits when I left home but they reached 36 by the time we reached the summit around noon. The large patches of bright blue sky beckoned us to linger a while and enjoy the view, unfortunately the brisk winds suggested that we move on. The descent to the pond was one long, continuous glissade interspersed with a few whoops, an occassional "Aieeee" and some prudent tree grabbing. When the going got too rough the butt slide technique was thrown in for good measure. The snow had softened considerably by the time we had finished our rather late lunch next to the pond so the final descent to the car was definitely trickier than the hike up. The top layer of very soft snow was perched on a sheet of ice from a previous storm and it insisted on sliding out from under us at the most inopportune moments. So whether we wanted to or not the butt slide was the common mode of transportation. The good news is we all made it down in one piece and some even suggested they would do it again in spite of their bumps and bruises. Time will tell. As for me, I'd hike with these folks anywhere, anytime. They are tough.

Tuesday Outing - Leaders Choice   Tue, Feb 10, 2009, Maureen Coutant
This week we skied on the Lake George School XC trail. It wasn't the best conditions for skiing - a bit hard and some debris down, but we all made it through the entire course with out injuries or even a hard fall. When we started we saw a class of kids on snowshoes and wished we had ours too. But we were up for the challenge and everyone did great. Mo, Steve and Licia even did a little ice skating on the small pond near the parking lot afterwards.

Whiteface   Sat, Feb 14, 2009, Steve Mackey and Licia Mackey  
We had a low turnout, (I guess nobody owns flexible flyers anymore), but it was a beautiful day and a great trip. We had brilliant sunshine, and very little wind most of the time. The view of the rest of the high peaks from the high turn was awesome. We had probably the best ride down ever. The last half mile was really icy and really fast. We had to avoid a bare spot and go way to the left and the sleds got a little squirrelly. I took a lot of video and hope to make a little movie.

YMG - Wright Peak - High Peak   Sun, Feb 15, 2009, Jonathan Lane and Madeline Kowalik-Bova  
This was a good winter day. The air was chilly, but not too bad. There weren’t many views to be had when we first reached the summit, but the views soon improved before we descended. A couple of us even got to test out our crampons for the first time; they helped us all make it down off the icy summit safe and sound. A couple of us were even fortunate enough to see a fisher on our way back down the mountain!

Spectacle Pond   Sun, Feb 15, 2009, Pat Desbiens
A perfect day for a leisurely hike to a lovely pond near Schroon Lake. The sunshine and virtually no wind allowed for us to eat our lunch at the beautiful rocky promontory listening to the ice creaking and a view of Pharaoh Mt. After arriving back at the trailhead, six members of the group decided to take the short jaunt into Gull Pond where they were rewarded with gorgeous views of the cliffs surrounding the pond. A great time was had by all. Thanks to Jack for taking over the leadership duties for this trip due to Pat's pesky knee problems.

Tuesday Outing - Leaders Choice   Tue, Feb 17, 2009, Maureen Coutant
While Maureen was lounging in 80 degree sun and sand, we hustled out in our 30 degree sun and snow. We snowshoed beyond the ski trails at L.G. Rec. to a well broken but unmarked trail along a delightful brook (West?). Our objective; a view of the lake, some exercise, and fresh air. Though I'd scouted on Sun. my maps did not have a trail marked in this area. Bill suggested we might be on an alternate trail up Prospect. We noted an abundance of deer (et.al.) tracks, reminding Linda of her apple tree herd, but with the crunch of our snowshoes had little hope of seeing any wildlife. We crossed the brook a couple times, gained elevation equivalent to West (Margaret's est.), got a glimps of the lake, and scooted back the same route, having spent our time. I'll do some research on this trails destination, for future outings.

Tuesday Outing - Leaders Choice   Tue, Feb 24, 2009, Maureen Coutant
We had a chrysral day for our tree id snowshoe up the red trail with Moreau's naturalist,Dave. We checked out sap and red pine, white and black birch, a hugh beech, and striped maple. We followed our 'mink" stream to its origin, a spring just off the trail. Porcupine tracks led us to their well trodden den entrance. There must be some mighty hungry fellows living there. They had completely denuded 4 large hemlocks nearby. Our bright sun and clear sky enticed us to extend our trip to the top of the ridge. Good exercise and great views.

Five Mile Mt.   Sun, Mar 1, 2009, Jack whitney
It was 16 degrees under overcast skies with minimal wind when we started at the Deer Leap Trailhead but soon it was in the 30's - great hiking weather. The first stop of the day was at the lean-to then onto several lookouts where we had some great views of Lake George. Taking a short side trip, we hiked up Five Mile Mountain where lunch was enjoyed in the warm sun. Descending to the trail, we had slight elevation up and then it was down for the rest of the trip to Clay Meadows where we had spotted vehicles.

This week we returned to the Wilton Wildlife Preserve for a skiing/snowshoeing combo. We started off on the groomed trails and most skied, while Margaret and I snowshoed. We met up frequently, but unfortunately not when Margaret and I found the remains of a fresh rabbit killed by a fox. Actually, another group found it and explained the tracks and remains to us. Afterwards, we met up again and all snowshoed on the other side of the road. It was a beautiful day and had it not been lunchtime....would have stayed even longer.

Marcy, Gray, Skylight   Sat, Mar 7, 2009, Steve Mackey
We lucked out with a fairly warm, sunny day. On Marcy, at the intersection with the range trail, Mike dug up the sign post, so we figured we had at least 6 feet of snow on the ground. On the summit of Marcy we picked up another hiker who had got separated from her group, (so now we are allowed to lose a person on some other hike, and still have a 100% return rate). After Skylight we hiked back over Marcy for the second time and our legs started protesting since we had done around a mile vertical for the day. We had a strong group and actually made it out before dark.

The Harry Betar trail was a bit sloppy Tues. morn. Despite the slush, the fresh air, exercise, and company were good. With mended ribs, Gary entertained us with his chairlift pinning, handle bar vaulting, and Hornbeck bouncing tales. Neil survived to tell of his encounters with a NH moose, coyotes on Tongue, and the icy waters of L.G. We assured Margaret she didn’t need a spray skirt, wet suit, or the ability to roll for our Tues. evening kayak outings. Liz promised to return from England and France for our spring flower and bird outings. The Feeder Canal trail was mush, so we returned via the back streets of G.F.

Moreau Lake: Eastern Ridge Trail   Sat, Mar 14, 2009, Ray Bouchard
It was a gorgeous day for doing an end to end hike along the spine of the ridge. The trail lacked the overlooks that some of the other trails offer but that was more than made up for by the varied scenery along the way. It was great to have 4 folks join us from the Albany area to round out our motley group. I hope they join us again in the near future.

Giant & Rocky Peak Ridge   Sun, Mar 15, 2009, Pat McCullough
Crampons were the footwear of the day for this sunshine and warmth filled hike. Better conditions in March could not exist for a High Peaks hike. The morning found the ice covered ridges on Giant bullet-proof hard. By the time we returned in the afternoon, the ice had softened so that your crampons dug in without any difficulty.

We had a St. Patrick's Day walk through the Saratoga State Park. We only had to venture out on snow and ice a little and could smell spring in the air. We heard a pair of bard owls calling back and forth and even though Steve tried to flush one out...we couldn't see it. Back at the cars we enjoyed some scones and fresh fruit and dip! A great start to the day.

YMG - Goodnow Mt. - Fire Tower   Sat, Mar 21, 2009, Jonathan Lane and Annie Dagastine  
What a nice day! We took our time, stopping at the various markers along the trail to learn some interesting tidbits about our surroundings. Ever wonder how Goodnow’s porcupine population satisfies its salt cravings? Wooden floorboards soaked in horse urine! I think I’ll stick with my salty gorp, thank you very much. The sky was a clear, bright blue and the sun did a good job of chasing the chill away, leaving us with comfortable conditions and beautiful views.

Owl Head Lookout (Not Owls Head)   Sun, Mar 22, 2009, Pat Desbiens and *Sandy Yellen  
Springtime in the Adironacks - it was snowing lightly when we arrived at the trailhead and started this trip. Stabilizers and micro-spikes were deemed to be the best equipment for our feet since the trail was hard pack and ice. The final .02 pitch to the summit was a bit icy but slow and steady got everyone to the top where we found a warm, non-windy area to enjoy our lunches and take in the spectacular views from this area. All too soon it was time to begin our journey back to our cars. Thanks to Sandy Yellen for taking over the leadership role for this hike for the temporarily disabled leader - great job.

Tuesday Outing - Leaders Choice   Tue, Mar 24, 2009, Maureen Coutant
We walked through Congress Park and then along Broadway past the little cottages. We found the only snow and ice left in Saratoga on the trails of the Skidmore woods. None of us had been there before and we were pleasantly surprised. We heard and saw a Piliated Woodpecker. We also came across what looked like a fenced off elephant, or tiger, or moose pit trap. We came up with all kinds of other imaginative ideas for what it was. Upon looking at the map though, it was described as a "fenced well," not nearly as exciting as our visions.

Cascade & Porter   Sun, Mar 29, 2009, Pat McCullough
The weather Gods did not smile on me for this trip. They predicted rain and all of the new hikers canceled out at the last minute. I still had two brave souls who did the two mountains with me. It did not rain until we hit cloud level at about 3500 feet and then it stopped once we went below this level. The wind at the top was stronger than I have ever experienced. We still had a great day in the mountains.

Tuesday Outing - Leaders Choice   Tue, Mar 31, 2009, Maureen Coutant
This week we wound up doing more than we planned. We walked along the boardwalk in Lake George and then up to the Prospect Mtn bridge over the Northway. It was relatively clear of snow and ice, so we wound up going up the trail to the road and overlook. Afterwards we walked the road down and headed to a coffee shop to have a farewell toast to Steve Mackey. He'll be leaving next week to begin the Appalachian Trail. We all wished him well and will follow his adventure on our chapter website! (We also saw the gross remains of a deer along the trail and a possible drug bust in Lake George ... or was it a training exercise? It was not your normal ADK sighting!)

Moreau lake State Park   Sat, Apr 4, 2009, Reg Prouty
Three friendly ADK members followed the described planned route on a beautiful early Spring Day, reaching the Spier Falls overlook just in time for a leisurely lunch behind a large boulder field so we could be out of a biting wind. We took the easy and shorter way back, descending on the Orange trail, exiting at the old hotel foundation where we started. It was a great way to get a Spring warm up.

GF area walk/hike   Tue, Apr 7, 2009, Maureen Coutant
Due to forecasted snow flurries on Tuesday our trip was moved to Thurs and were we ever glad! It was a beautiful day and much warmer than earlier in the week. We hiked this week to the Pilot Knob Lookout and then up to the waterfall. The last time we were there was in the fall, there was hardly a trickle of water...it pays to come in the spring! It was a beautiful sight. Everyone enjoyed the hike, sights and beautiful day. No spring flowers on this day, but I've heard they are coming out as of mid-April. Saratoga National Historical Park   Sat, Apr 11, 2009, Rich Crammond
This was a great day in the park, with cool air but nice for hiking. The pines had a nice smell. We saw garter snakes, skunk cabbage, blue birds and lots of deer. Hiking with three teachers was also a learning experience. I was impressed by their interest in the landscape. Every ADK outing is a learning time and a way to be closer to nature. Thanks to three rugged ladies for hiking along on this spring day.

We had wonderful weather for our walk around the lake. The kids did a sensory scavenger hunt...ie. found things that were smooth, rough, beautiful, soft, etc. Later we looked for animal homes and found quite a few...beaver lodge, birds nests, tree nooks, snail shell, etc. The kids (and adults) enjoyed the water, beach and playground as well as the trail through the woods. We waited for the best day of the week and wound up doing this hike on Friday. We hiked to the cabin on Thomas and then to Cat. We had thoughts of hiking the ridge trail between Thomas and Cat, but with a time factor and not being sure where the trail started from the Thomas side...we decided to save that for another day. This left us more time to enjoy the views and even catch some rays on Cat! See photo gallery for pictures.

Stephens Pond/Rock Lake   Sat, Apr 25, 2009, Rich Crammond
What a nice day to be on a ADK outing. We saw a BIG loon with a EVEN BIGGER fish..had to be almost two feet long. Lunchtime for the loon so we had our lunch as we watched. Stevens Pond was worth hiking - it is a cool-looking place. Rock Lake was nice but had a short muddy trail. The Adirondacks is always a super place to be any time of the year. Thanks to three rugged ADKers for being there on this outing.

This was a new area for the group and very handy for those who live in the Queensbury area. We parked down the road and walked to the Preserve due to the small parking area and to get a little more exercise. The total mileage was only about 3 miles, but the Preserve hike had enough ascent to get our hearts pumping. The bugs aren't bad yet and we could see a little bit of snow on the top of West Mtn. We also found a couple of geocaches.

Bullhead Mountain/Hour Pond Hike   Sat, May 2, 2009, Rich Crammond and Jayne Bouder  
This was by far a most rugged outing this year but a rewarding one also. We found the crash site and the summit of Bullhead Mt. There were signs of moose on the way down.This was a real good mixed up under growth crash and bash bushwack to the top..well maybe not so good. Hour Pond will have to wait, not enough time on this hike. Everyone did well and we all arrived safely back at the trailhead. What a rugged group! Thanks to all for coming along.

Deer Leap   Sat, May 2, 2009, Lorraine MacKenzie
FIRE! Yes, FIRE! The flames had subsided but there were embers crackling in the wind, smoke rising from the charred ground and the smell of smoke surrounding us. Three shovel toting forest rangers told us everything was under control and it was safe to continue. It started with a lightning strike three weeks prior, it had been contained for a few days and they were just making the rounds. Right next to the scene there was a pond and ground that was wet from the rain the night before. This reinforced the safety of the location. We continued on to Dear Leap; marveled in the beauty of Lake George and the surrounding landscape, with the strong sense of reality of how all can be lost in just a flash!

Spring Bird Walk - Peebles Island State Park   Sat, May 2, 2009, Rich Speidel
One of the neat things about birds in the springtime is that our year-round residents (e.g., mallards, chickadees, blue jays) mix and mingle with migratory species (e.g., sandpipers, swallows, orioles)arriving from points hundreds or thousands of miles to the south. We met these birds and many more while circling Peebles Island, where the Hudson River and two branches of the Mohawk help to bring them in. Despite mostly cloudy skies and a chilly breeze at times, we identified 48 species of birds…a fine variety of feathered friends!

Waterfall Hike - Beaver Meadow Falls/Rainbow Falls   Sun, May 3, 2009, Pat Desbiens and *Sandy Yellen  
We had a good turnout for this one, seasoned as well as new hikers. We started out on the Ausable Club Road (a good move because of muddy conditions) to Beaver Meadow Falls. Because of the snowmelt, it was spectacular! Then onto Rainbow Falls via the trail. The sun peaked out momentarily for another great view. Those who chose to return with Pat after the first waterfall were rewarded with the sighting of two deer. All in all-a great hike.

Saratoga Wildflower hunt   Tue, May 5, 2009, Maureen Coutant
We drove through a few sprinkles, but didn't get wet while hunting the North Woods at Skidmore and then the Orra Phelps Preserve for wild flowers. We saw all kinds of cool flowers and were able to i.d. most of them thanks to our guide books and collective knowledge! Highlights: White trillium, 2-leaved miterwort, foam flowers, jack-in-the-pulpit, a grove of skunk cabbage and little red efts everywhere!

Hoffman Notch   Sat, May 9, 2009, Bill Morse
A beautiful day for a hike. A few flies at the trailhead, but very few in the woods. A great point to point hike with lots of wildflowers to see. It was nice to have a couple of people that knew the flowers. (I will now always be able to identify a trout lily.) For the fishermen amongst us, we saw two nice looking streams and one nice looking pond. (Only a 3.8 mile canoe carry for that pond.) We added a couple of stream crossings where removing boots was best. We got out of the woods just ahead of some thunderstorms and hail. A good trip.

Spring Bird Walk – Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park   Sat, May 9, 2009, Rich Speidel
Our large but quiet group enjoyed a productive walk. We started at a pond and observed green herons and several other birds. Later we heard the tantalizing song of the black-throated blue warbler. This attractive species arrives each spring from the West Indies. Like other warblers, they are small, active, and often difficult to observe (a “needle in a haystack” of woodland vegetation). We spent nearly an hour trying to locate this elusive songster, but it remained hidden or out of range. Our patience was rewarded when a black-throated blue appeared on a high branch in an open tree. We were grateful for this sighting, which was one of 37 species identified during the morning.

Wildflower Hike/Fire Tower - Hadley Mountain   Sun, May 10, 2009, Jack Whitney
We joined Ruth Schottman and group from the Schenectady chapter of the ADK. The group split into two groups with Nancy Slack taking the first and Ruth taking the last up the mountain. Many wild flowers and some trees were identified.Arriving at the top we had grear views but it was a bit windy. Dropping down to the cabin site we enjoyed lunch and the great conversation. We did find a mountain full of wildflowers on Hadley. I especially loved the painted trillium and the trout lilies in bloom...and the jack in the pulpit. The black flies loved us! We've seen worse, but they were annoying! This was Vicky's last trip with us before heading back over the pond and it was a trip of firsts for her - a firetower hike, picking up a travel bug from the geocache (safely relocated now to England, and eating a piece of a bear claw from Paneras. We look forward to seeing her again soon when she comes back to "vacation!" See the photo gallery.

Spring Bird Walk – Pack Forest, Warrensburg   Sat, May 16, 2009, Rich Speidel
We had partial sunshine for the first hour, and then turned cloudy and breezy the rest of the morning. There was also light rain for a short time. Despite difficult viewing conditions and the elusive nature of the birds we were seeking, our combined “eagle eyes” led to brief sightings of black-throated green, magnolia, parula and yellow-rumped warblers. Other migratory and resident birds were heard or seen throughout the morning. When the final list was tallied, we were pleasantly surprised: 42 species! This was an excellent assortment of birds, especially given the unsettled weather conditions.

With a early meeting time at Panera Bread we decided to go up to exit 30 and skirt Lake Placid for Coreys Trailhead.We were lucky for if we had gone thru Indian Lake to Tupper Lake. We would have never made it to the trailhead. Due to a fire the traffic on the road had been blocked and several of the hikers never arrived at the trail head. We started from the trail head at 7:30 and arrived at the junction to Calkins Brook trail in about 45 min.Up to Donaldson and taking a short break hiked over to Emmons and then back to Donaldson. We arrived at Seward at around 2:15. Congratulations to Dan Monroe on his 46th High Peak. Finally back over to Calkins Brook trail head and down to our cars at the trail head. Since our hike up the trail this morning, someone had lengthened the trail on our return journey.

We saw a few wildflowers, but we didn't see any rattlesnakes! Some were disappointed about that, but Sarah wasn't in that group! It was a great day to be out. Blue skies, cool temp, and enough of a breeze to keep the bugs away. We hiked out to the end of the Deer Leap trail on Tongue for lunch, found a geocache, and hiked back. We made a quick stop into the CCC pine forest at the Clay Meadow trailhead and made it back to Queensbury by mid-afternoon.

We hiked 6.8 miles from the beginning of the Feeder Canal over the bridge to SGF and along the Hudson River on the walkway. After visiting our favorite rainbow trout, we headed back. Also spotted: Great Blue Herons, 2 sets of Canadian Geese with 3 goslings each, and some ducks. Great hike and company as always.

Wow...we had quite the flotilla! Crossing the lake an osprey was circling the lead pack. Maybe checking them out to see if they looked like good eating! Then we meandered through the stream past the osprey nests. Everyone enjoyed the activity...and then we quickly and quietly moved on. The beavers had been busy downstream and cut the trip short. The group returned to the lake with the group splitting and 1/2 continuing on to little round lake and a shoreline paddle. Perfect weather, glass smooth water, good company, wonderful wildlife...what could be better?

What a great long day! The sun was out the whole time and the horror stories we’ve heard about this range were not to be. Our lead hiker’s “comments” let us know when the mushy ground was coming up so we could search for firmer footing. (thanks Chris!) And a rope/rock descent was a nice curve ball on this hike as well but we all made it down one way or another (thanks Greg for being first to try out the strength of the rope!)

What a wonderful day! We saw plenty of wildlife - a chipmunk, rabbit, snake, and a family of grouse. Actually, the momma grouse came onto the trail and started to come after us, chasing us back up the trail! We were able to see a couple of her chicks - they were sooo cute! Other than dealing with hungry bugs, we enjoyed great weather and beautiful views.

A good day for a paddle and a hike. Calm paddle to trailhead. A few mosquitoes at the trailhead, but very few there after. An easy hike up Treadway with a light breeze and lots of lady slippers. Good views on top and very relaxing. Rumor has it trip leader took a short nap. To extend the good conditions we took the long paddle back to enjoy the rest of Putnam Pond.

We bravely set out to tackle these 2 "rough" climbs. Belfry Fire Tower offered views of Lake Champlain, Vermont and a variety of birds. It took us longer to find Owl's Head Traihead than it took to climb it. On top, it appeared we could reach out & touch Cascade. The rain & accompaning clouds limited our views of anything else.

We wound up driving into Dacy Clearing, which cut down on our total mileage and allowed us to get back to Queensbury by 3pm! We were treated to beautiful pink ladyslippers along the way. Talk about timing. This week we went to Stewarts Pond (Bridge) and we were right at the edge of a thunderstorm. We took our time getting the boats in the water. Then we stood around and talked on shore a bit longer than normal waiting for the clouds to pass. When we were in the clear, we headed out and had a great time. Many of us had not paddled this section before and enjoyed being out on the water with a great bunch of people.

Ten of us set out on a mostly overcast morning. The cloud ceiling was high enough to see some of the peaks and the sun shone as spotlights through the few breaks. Owl Head Look-out is a short hike along the North Trail to Giant - there were eight of us making our way along this very scenic trail with it's numerous streams and mini-waterfalls up to the ridge and then the steep but short climb to the large rock outcropping with it's nearly 360 degree views of the surrounding peaks, particularly Giant & Rocky Peak Ridge. A leisurely break for lunch and it was back to the trailhead before the forecasted rain could put a damper on our day. A great group - a great day!

The weather cooperated and we had sun all day! We had great views off of Rooster Comb and decided to get some more miles in and did the loop over Hedgehog, paused at a look-out that overlooked the Ausable Club and continued back to our starting point. We saw lots of great fungus types on this hike and even a deer on the path.

Ok...so it wasn't a sunny evening...but it wasn't raining...when we started. But it had been raining so often recently we just had to give it a try. At least Licia and I did. We thought we were going to be the only crazy ones out, but then Jim joined us. We kayaked upstream at the Spier Falls section of the Hudson. We saw a hooded merganser and explored the islands near the launch. The water was higher and moving faster due to all the rain we've gotten.

We had good weather for this hike. The trails very muddy and wet and we only ran into bugs on the way out. There was some interesting scrambling with great views on top. This is a long hike which was made longer by the mud and running water on the trails. For Charles and Bob, it was another peak in their quest for the 46.

Canoe Schroon River from Adirondack to Starbuckville Dam   Sat, Jul 11, 2009, reg prouty
Eleven eager paddlers met at the put-in across from the state boat launch at the outlet of Schroon Lake for an easy, interesting, and enjoyable paddle down the Schroon river to the bridge just above the Starbuckville Dam. We had great weather and kept ahead of the impending storm that did not materialize until late that evening. Many beautiful and rustic camps and summer residences were visible as we made our way south. Wildlife noticed included deer, geese, ducks, turtles, and blue heron. The five and a half mile trip was accomplished so quickly at at average speed of 2.3 miles per hour that we were done by 11:35. Since there were no suitable spots for a lunch break that were not private land, we decided to have a leisurely lunch at the swimming beach near the dam. Jayne and Ray decided to paddle back upriver to the put-in site. Eleven paddlers included Reg Prouty, John Devine,Ray Boucher,Jim Armstrong,Rich Salz,Miok Salz, Jayne Bouder, Charles "Bud" Bergmann, Harvey Raufman, Patricia Raufman,and Terry Peek.

This week we paddled on the Schroon River between Exit 23 and 24. We went against the current and had a nice easy trip back (we didn't get all the way to Exit 24!) Lots of signs of beavers and we heard a slap, but we didn't see any. It rained in much of the area just before the meeting time, but the weather was fine as you got North of Queensbury. This season you just have to go for it and hope for the best!

We headed up the Route 9N trail, and although it was overcast with about “42 seconds” of a view through the clouds at the top, as recorded by Kathy, it turned out to be warm and pleasant on the trail. We had lots of good photo ops and lots of chatter amongst the group that helped to make it a rather enjoyable day.

The sun shone all day. What a treat! We thoroughly enjoyed our trek jumping from rock to rock and spending time on both bare rock summits. Wayne finally managed to get his first official High Peak. On our way back, we passed by a Ranger setting out on patrol to chase bears away from the Marcy Dam campers. Turns out some of the “Adirondack” bear have managed to find a way to open the bear canisters up faster than the average camper and the campgrounds are their “fast food” stop.

Black Mountain-hike and swim   Sat, Jul 25, 2009, Neal Van Dorsten
This was a great success. We hiked from Pike Brook trailhead to the summit of Black Mountain and then on to the point on Lake George, where we all took a nice cool swim. When we arrived there was a group from Huletts Landing just finishing a breakfast outing attended by more than 200 people who all came by boat. I knew a lot of the folks, so we were able to procure some refreshments, including a little cold draft beer. We then had boat transport back to Huletts and the trailhead.

This week we paddled on the Hudson from just above the beginning of the Feeder Canal in Glens Falls almost to the Northway overpass. We were treated to a perfect evening of water like glass and no threat of rain. We also saw a mink swimming in the Hudson and escorted it back to shore in our attempts to get photos. A great blue heron was also spotted a few times.

The Gill Brook trail is well worth the extra 5 minutes it may take. It runs over beautiful rock formations some of them steep enough to be mini waterfalls. Nippletop has breathtaking 360 degree views of the High Peaks. It was a great day with great sights. We did leave the trail with 2 questions, how does Brian manage to stay so clean when everyone else is coated in mud? Mud repellent boots?

Mt. Marshall   Sun, Aug 2, 2009, Bill Carpenter and Dan Monroe  
We met at Panera's, our regular meeting place. Our designated starting place was the Upper Works. It was a cloudy day. We knew it was going to get worse and it surely did. By the time we reached the lean to across from the trail head to Marshall, the sky opened up! We waited about 20 minutes and the rain slowed a little. We started up and by the time we were about half way, it poured buckets! My boots were wet from water running down my legs. I have never seen this trail, all the way from Upper Works to the top of Marshall, as wet as it was, but we all made it out safely and soaked.

We earned our lunch on this hike because there are very few switch backs on this trail so it's up,up and up. When we got to the top we saw that the metal roof was off of the cab of the tower. Redfield and Cliff Mts.   Sun, Aug 9, 2009, Dan Monroe and Bill Carpenter  
We met at Panera's at 5:30 a.m. and away we went to Heart Lake. We had changed our starting point (originally from Upper Works) because of the wet trail we had encountered the week before going into the Marshall trail head. We started hiking at about 7:40 a.m. with our route to Marcy Dam, Avalanch Camp junction, Lake Arnold, down and over to Uphill lean-to. As expected, we encountered a lot of wet at Feldspar Brook. From the lean-to we hiked Redfield. The going got a little slow and we were not able to do Cliff due to time constraints. As it was, we did not get out until 8:30 p.m. A rewarding day to get Redfield in (which was Lana Christiansen's 46th--Congratulations) but a disappointment to some not to be able to summit Cliff. We all made it out safely. This week we paddled again on the Spier Falls section of the Hudson River. We headed downstream to the coves and a couple participants even took a dip. The cardinal flowers were beautiful along the shore and everyone had a great evening out. Our flotilla probably gave a float plane a bit of a heart attack as it appeared to want to land where we were spread out along the river. Oh well...we didn't see any motor boats though!

Summer Weekend JBL / Marcy & Skylight   Fri, Aug 14, 2009, Lorraine MacKenzie
The weekend turned out to be this first true "summer" weekend of the season. It was warm & sunny and true to the High Peaks - cool in the shade, hot on the exposed rock of Marcy and cold enough for a jacket on the summit. The views from Marcy were magnificent. We decided not to venture over to Skylight but to take our time on top, soak in the scenery, take pictures and talk to the summit seward. We enjoyed a swim in Johns Brook before dinner. The water was cold & refreshing - perfect for an after hike clean up. The next day, two of us climbed up to the summit of Slide. It was much hotter than the previous day. We regrouped at JBL and hiked out. Good food, Great people, fantastic weekend.

I had the telephone in my hand to call everyone and cancel this hike - it was raining and it was the forecast we've all become used to this summer of scattered showers with possible thunderstorms in the afternoon. But this was Glens Falls and we were going to Newcomb - the weather would be better there and it was! We were the first on the summit and had it all to ourselves for the entire time we were there. Chipmunks provided the lunchtime entertainment. Although a little hazy - the views were still great from the firetower.

Another great extended outing. On the first evening Jayne Bouder saw her first wild Black Bear. Our hike up Mt. Lafayette and Mt. Lincoln was wonderful. Over five hours above tree line with 100 mile views. Saturday we had rain so we visited a number of waterfalls.

Cedar River Flow Paddle   Sat, Aug 29, 2009, Ray Bouchard
Rain forced me to cancel the Saturday paddle, but as luck would have it there were enough folks who were willing to go on Sunday. Actually, we gained one paddler as we sat chatting at Panera’s. A young woman spotted all the kayaks and canoes in the parking lot and decided to find out who we were and where we were going for the day. Naturally, we welcomed her with open arms. I do believe she had a good time. After a leisurely paddle down the flow, we managed to pick our way through the reeds and find the entrance to the Cedar River, which is no small feat. With a summer full of non-stop rain, the current that we paddled against was more like a spring flow. The first 100 yards were the hardest, but after that the river broadened and less effort was required. Sadly, all good things must come to an end so after a pleasant lunch at the lean-to, we had to refloat our boats and head back. As you might expect the current carried us back to the lake with very little effort on our part.

MacIntire Range Traverse from Adk Loj   Sat, Sep 5, 2009, Mike McLean
It was a beautiful day for a hike, accompanied by Alicia Schantz and Emil Klymkow. We hiked past Heart Lake and into Indian Pass, taking the first left up to the Marshall/Iroquois Col. Alicia needed Marshall for her 46, so we climbed that first before climbing up a couple of interesting cliffs and straining and crawling through some very thick woods to arrive at Shepard's Tooth. Views were incredible from the tooth. Then we ascended Iroquois and then Algonquin, enjoying the great weather and views. We were back to the Loj in short order. A strong group and wonderful conversation made the day fly by.

• The weather was perfect (mid 70s and crystal clear) and there were no bugs. As a result a very large group turned out. The views from the summit of Dippikill mountain were the clearest ever In the 36 years the trip leader has been coming to Dippikill. Several took a refreshing swim at Dippikill Pond to end the outing and two went for a canoe ride.

We paddled on Lake George starting at $1M beach and up along the east side of the lake. We got up as far as the Antigua Resort on Plum Point before heading back. The lake was as calm as I've ever seen it...like glass. Hardly any boats after Labor Day and a beautiful sunset to cap it off! Gotta love September!

A gorgeous day for a hike with delightful people to the summit of a great little mountain with beautiful views of Lake George and the surrounding mountains. No bugs and a light breeze added to the enjoyment of the day. We made this a loop trip, returning via Bumps Pond where we stopped for a few minutes to explore the old chimney and enjoy the solitude of this beautiful little mountain pond. Following the end of the formal hike, some of us took a side trip to Shelving Rock Falls where the photographers in the group were able to get some good pictures.

The temperature was in the 30's at the start and warmed up to the mid 70's by the time we reached the summit of French Mountain Point. We all agreed this was the best view of Lake George anyone has experienced. We were right on top of the Narrows. You could get a sense of the water depth from the various hues of blue surrounding the islands. There wasn't a cloud in the sky. The boat pickup at the end was the "icing on the cake.: 8

We awoke to frost on the pumpkins, but with a later start we arrived on the summit just before noon with the skies a beautiful shade of blue, temperatures in the high 60's, no breeze, great views and a wonderful group of people with whom to enjoy lunch. On the way back we detoured a little bit to take in the view of the Champlain Valley and a hungry turkey vulture circling below us. It doesn't get much better!

Cascade and Porter from Marcy Airfield   Sat, Sep 26, 2009, Bill Morse
What a beautiful day for a hike. Lots of sunshine, very little wind and cool temperatures. The route up from Marcy Field to Porter has some steep sections, but no rock scrambles. As advertised, the trail is little used. We saw no other hikers until we reached the summit of Porter. There were close to a dozen people on Porter. We trekked over to Cascade where there was at least 100 people. Standing room only. We changed from the planned route back. We went down Porter to the Garden. Above Little Porter the trail is vague in places, but in good shape. From Little Porter to the Garden an excellent well maintained trail. We hopped the shuttle back to Marcy Field and timed it right as the shuttle showed up a couple of minutes after we reached the Garden parking area. We were a small group, but we had a great time. (George's first 2 peaks.)

There were only a few of us that reached the true summit since the majority went ahead but didn't find it. Scouting of the Hour Pond trail revealed heavy flooding at the beaver dam, making it impassable without waders. So we skipped that part, and contented ourselves with a walk along the new red-blazed trail as far as the Puffer Pond trail intersection, where we had lunch. We then retraced our steps to the 13th Lake trailhead, after a few stops to check out the kayakers and take in the soon-to-peak foliage along the lake.

What a great evening. We had a short paddle around Glen Lake in the little bit of daylight we had left. Then we headed to the Mackey's camp for a potluck dinner with the main meal provided by Licia and Steve. Steve's new grill seems to work fine and everyone left stuffed! Great trip, great company and this time great eats! Anyone else who wants to test out their grills...just let me know!

Hurricane Mountain   Sat, Oct 10, 2009, Rich Myette
We headed up the North Trail to Hurricane Mt. from the Big Crow Parking area to cloudy and breezy weather. The trail was wet from early morning rain. Near the summit the wind picked up and the summit was occluded with clouds. As we were finishing our lunch a very cold and strong wind accosted us and then a steady, cold snow commenced. A drizzle accompanied us part of the way down and by the time we reached our cars the sun was bright and the sky clear. All the way home we viewed beautiful autumnal leaves. The hardy hikers were Ray Bouchard, Jeff Sullivan, Seth Dunn, Bijan Ahmadi, Ellen DuBois and Rich Myette.

Hanging Spear Falls   Sat, Oct 10, 2009, Rich Crammond
This hike started out wet so we had to take it slower on the trail. The real disappointment was not being able to cross the dam at Flowed Lands because of the high water. The sleet and rain also made for a very cold day. The high point was when Erica saw Flowed Lands for the first time. It cleared up in the afternoon and the views were great. Thanks to the rugged ladies for hiking along on this wet and rocky trail.

We started out in below freezing temperatures. Most of the leaves were still on the trees. Winter came sooner than even they anticipated. As the elevation increased, so did the amount of snow & ice. We made it to Bear Den and turned around. It was a great day in the woods. Dial is still there for us to climb. 5

Sleeping Beauty   Sun, Oct 18, 2009, Dan Monroe
Even though the weather forecast had been for rain for the weekend, it turned out to be a nice day. We had plenty of time for photographs, and it was a great group. We drove into Dacy Clearing and hiked to the top of Sleeping Beauty. We took time to snack and take photographs, then went down to Bumps Pond for another stop and then over to Fishbrook Pond lean-to. We spent time there before we started out for our last leg of the hike.

Evening Paddle   Thu, Oct 22, 2009, Maureen Coutant
Our last trip of the season was on Brant Lake. This was a first for us and it didn't disappoint. The lake was remarkably calm, so we paddled out and around the island with the house on it. Then the wind started to pick up so we headed back and into the wetlands. It was calmer in there but we could tell a storm was brewing, so we headed out before making it all the way to the end of the wetland area. Another great trip out. See you in the Spring!

Vanderwhacker Mountain   Sun, Oct 25, 2009, Rich Myette
The access road from the junction of the Boreas River and Route 28N was two miles of a bumpy, rocky and wet way. The leaves were still beautiful and the sky was clear. Nice 360 degrees of view from the fire tower with great sights of the High Peaks, with the summits obscurred in cloud cover. Hikers were Bill Carpenter, Eileen Scheirer, Erica Halbrook, Rich Vincigqerra, Karen Mckenny, Peggy Kennedy and Rich Myette.

After such a rainy day on Saturday, you couldn't have asked for a better day on Sunday. The sun was shining on Lake George, the islands, and the mountains to the west and the air had been cleaned by the rain the previous day. A great, pleasant group to hike with and to enjoy the fall colors. We took plenty of time to reach the top and plenty of time for photographs and conversation. Thanks for an enjoyable day.

Cat and Thomas Mt.   Sun, Nov 1, 2009, Jack Whitney
A good fall day. Rain was expected, but it held off. Most of the color was gone except for the Oaks which had some oranges. We climbed Cat Mt. first and were treated to some great views. It was a little chilly on top but our group had the extra layers to put on. After hydrating and eating, it was off to Thomas Mt. Some ups and downs to the overlook and then to the cabin on Thomas Mt. where we took a long lunch and finally down to our cars. A special thanks to Carolyn Cyr for her leadership skills on this hike.

We didn't quite make the summit due to an icy trail slowing our pace and a desire to be back on the dirt road by sunset. But, we had a great time! Rainbow Falls was beautiful and we were able to enjoy some nice views from near the summit. Laughs were had by all with good company.

We chose to do only Noonmark as we ran into quite a bit of ice on the steep ascent. It was a cloudy but very pleasant day. On the summit at lunch time the full sun came out for unlimited views in all directions. Snow was visible on the higher peaks. Some of the group elected to leave the summit ahead of the rest and missed my mini-concert on my pocket trumpet featuring Thansgiving and patriotic music and a tribute to Grace Hudowalski of the "Amazing Grace" which I performed for her once on her porch at The Boulders. We returned via the old Dix trail saving Round Mtn. for another time, possibly a mid or late winter snowshoe trip.

Pilot Knob   Sun, Nov 8, 2009, Jack Whitney
A nice sunny blue sky day greeted us as we hiked from the Buck Mt. trailhead. We took short breaks at each of the three overlooks to enjoy the great views. Finally, we reached the summit before the true summit. It was onward to the true summit where we tried to locate the plane crash from 1969 to no avail. Time to head home since darkness would soon be upon us.

Wallface Mountain Bushwhack   Sun, Nov 15, 2009, Jayne Bouder
This was a beautiful, warm day of lingering and taking lots of pictures. An earlier start would have saved us hours later. We spent only a brief half hour on Wallface’s summit before pacing the descending dusk back down to the trail. We almost made it, then we had to carefully bushwack around cliffs near the bottom in the dark to get back to the slippery Indian Pass trail. By not hurrying, we made it out after dark in one piece. The stars were as big as planets. Thanks- to a tough, cheerful group!

There was a lot of excitement on this hike! Just driving to the parking area meant going through big puddles. Only two vehicles made it through the "pond^ but not without getting wet inside. By the time we reached the summit the clouds lifted enough to get a view to enjoy a leisurly lunch. Everyone had an enjoyable time.

Deer Leap - Lake George   Sun, Nov 15, 2009, Pat Desbiens
The day before this hike was a total washout thanks to the effects of Hurricane Ida. But by Sunday morning, the clouds were already clearing out, the sun peeking through and the temperatures in the low 50's - a perfect day to take a short hike to Deer Leap and enjoy beautiful Lake George without all the boat traffic. Decked out in orange, red and other bright colors, seven of us took a leisurely pace, stopping at all the scenic spots now that the foliage was gone. The we enjoyed our lunch and each others' company, admiring the beautiful views at Deer Leap. Thanks to Jack also for the mini-education on the trees and leaves, as it was most appreciated and enjoyed by all.

French Mountain   Sat, Nov 21, 2009, reg prouty
A large group of 16 hikers enjoyed an unusually warm beautiful morning on the Western edge of French Mountain on a recently marked private trail upon which we obtained permission to hike and check trail conditions for the landowner. We onlt found a few pieces of litter and a little broken glass on or near the overlook. Otherwise, the trail was in excellent shape and the summit is recovering nicely from the forest fire several years ago that burned for over a week. The summit was enjoyed for almost an hour before the easy and quick return to th bike trail and parking lot of the Million Dollar Half Mile where Terry and others were eager to do a little Christmas shopping.

Cliff Mountain from Upper Works   Sun, Nov 22, 2009, Mike McLean
Seven souls ventured into the woods from Upper Works in hopes of climbing Cliff. Mud, deep mud, and even deeper mud slowed down our progress. Three turned around at Uphill Brook Lean-to, while five folks persisted in the mud and made it to the top, where the sun finally shone on us and the views were excellent. Way back was just as slow and even slower once darkness fell at the Flowed Lands. Congrats to Margaret O'Keefe for completing her 46th High Peak on this day and many thanks to Peter Abreu for lending a head lamp and accompanying us in the dark for the last two hours. It was quite an adventure.

We were walking along the Betar walkway in South Glens Falls and what do we see up in a tree by the river? A squirrel. Ok, not just your ordinary squirrel...an all white one! An albino squirrel and not a camera anywhere to be found. Later on we were treated to some woodpeckers up close too. But come on...an albino squirrel!

Turkey Trot #11 - Saratoga Battlefield   Thu, Nov 26, 2009, Rich Crammond
The weather was warm and the rain was gone. So we were off to a good start. Along the trail we saw some deer including a fine buck with large antlers. Very Impressive! One of the reasons that I like to hike in this park is to be a part of nature as much as I can and to be with others who enjoy the same thing. It's very rewarding. Thanks to a rugged group and some old standbys that return year after year. Great to see you all!

It wasn't a snowshoe since it was dry and there was no snow but it was exciting. Before we even started out we spotted a big owl perched on an old shed. Then at the top we were treated to some ginger candy. Wow! The waterfall was beautiful and roaring with the snow starting to fall. Then came the side trip down to the lake. An enjoyable day in the woods.

This was a great day, with good views and great company. On the return we stopped at the Indian Lake Restaurant for some grub, which we all enjoyed - except they put the peanut butter on the wrong burger! We now know that peanut butter and chili isn't the best of combinations. And congrats to everyone who got to use their snowshoes for the first time on this trip!

Since we had no beginners we climbed up Pilot Knob Mt. instead. It's much harder and has many great views of Lake George. We found a dry rock with a nice view at the top to enjoy our lunch. It was a great chance for some to try out our new microspikes and a good workout!

Seward Range Hike   Mon, Dec 21, 2009, Dan Monroe
It was a cold morning. We met at Panera's for a long drive to Coreys parking area. We signed in at about 7:30 a.m. for a long walk to Calkins Brook to the start of the herd path. About an hour before we reached the junction of Seward and Donaldson, it turned to serious winter time. There were 16 to 17 hikers ahead of us breaking trail to the junction. A few tried Seward. We opted to summit Donaldson and then we turned around and headed back. Conditions did not warrant chancing anything else. We had a good day even though it was a little disappointing that we didn't get all three peaks.

12 hearty souls ventured forth to enjoy the beautiful rolling terrain at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve. We followed the blue trail as well as a side trip to the Updahl Farm. Little wind with periods of snow and sun caused some hikers to sing Christmas carols. They are definately American Idol contenders!
