Annual New Years Day Buck Mtn. Snowshoe   Sun, Jan 1, 2012, Reg Prouty and Bob Aspholm  
- Ten hikers not needing snowshoes rang in the new year atop Buck Mountain on a very cloudy but fairly mild day for January. We sang Auld Lang Syne and Reg gave a tribute to Grace Hudowolski amongst other tunes on his pocket trumpet. We had a leisurely lunch and were down by mid afternoon. Midweek outing   Tue, Jan 3, 2012, Maureen Coutant
- Well, we didn't have snow, so this was a walk through the Skidmore Woods in Saratoga. We didn't even have any ice to deal with. Hmm ... winter?? Anyway, we introduced the area to some Saratogians and then headed downtown for coffee and snacks. - This week we travelled a bit further to visit a spot suggested by a member in the Saratoga area. We headed north of Lake Desolation for an easy bushwhack around Archer Vly Pond. Although there was no ice on the ground, the ice on the pond was letting us know it was there. It's constant groaning was quite loud at times! Before we realized it was the ice, we thought there might be a moose nearby. - We headed south to hike Overlook Mountain near the town of Woodstock in the Catskills. The weather was perfect and the trees were coated in ice, which shined and shimmered beneath the sun. After getting our fill of the mountain, a few of us checked out the book store at the monastery across the street, then headed into Woodstock to eat and check out the local shops. It was definitely a fun day! Hikers: Bill Barton, Erica Halbrook, Jonathan Lane, Kathy Ryan, Jen Shepherd, and Joanne Walczak.

Barton High Cliffs Loop   Sun, Jan 15, 2012, Jayne Bouder
- We set out on a clear, sunny, single digit day, with mercifully low winds. A few inches of frozen snow, topped with an inch of new snow, made for nice going all day, with fresh animal tracks for company. In some places, including the hill, Irene had left lots of new blowdown. We pushed our way up (and a little down) through it, spotted some High Peaks, Brant Lake, and Pharoah as we carefully walked the 1/4 mile of cliff top to a more sheltered lunch spot. Continuing the loop down and around to the 1/4 mile boulder strewn cliff base, we agreed that looking up at the cliffs was even better than standing on top of them. The sun was golden and the trees were throwing long shadows as we blithly passed our unused snowshoes on the way out. Thank you Steve for retrieving them on Tuesday! Thank you both for a great day! - This week we walked along the trails in the Lake George Recreation Area. We wound up on the trail that goes up the backside of Prospect, but didn't go too far. The trails had a bit of packed snow and ice and we found grippers helpful, but not entirely necessary. We meandered on the lower trails a little bit and got home before any of the potential rain and sleet forecasted for that day made an appearance. - We actually had winter conditions and winter weather. The skiing part was pretty decent. In the beginning, under the hemlock trees, there was a lot of ice, but the further we skied the better it got. From Lower Ausable Lake, we bare booted up until the intersection with Sawteeth, but from there on, it was full blown winter, and we had deep snow and had to wear snowshoes. We even had to take turns breaking trail. On the summit of Gothics we actually got a little sunshine and the view was very good. We moved along pretty swiftly and finished before dark. Monthly Monday Geocache   Mon, Jan 23, 2012, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King  
- This month we headed to Pack Forest in Warrensburg (we actually went on 1/9 due to a schedule conflict). We hiked along a snowmobile trail with no snow to an overlook of the pond from Ben's Woods. The cache was easy to find and we were thankful for its placement since it introduced us to this nice easy hike. Participants: Mo Coutant, Bruce Cushing, Sarah King, Brian Nichols, and Don Thorn.

- You know it gets to be a struggle to figure out what to do in a winter without local snow! We want to ski or snowshoe! Instead, we walked along the Harry Betar Walkway in South Glens Falls. It had rained the day before, but the walkway was in pretty good shape. There was a little ice in spots on the lower trail and all ice on top. Grippers were helpful, but those without were very careful and did fine. Afterwards, we walked over to the new coffee shop in Glens Falls. Stillwater Locks Eagle Watch   Sat, Jan 28, 2012, Rich Crammond
- This was one of the most pleasing outings for me and my fellow hikers. The weather was almost unreal for January and we just plain had a good time. Highlights of this outing were spending some time with people from Stillwater I haven't seen in years and they also brought along their grandkids so they could show them a pair of Bald Eagles along the trail! Cool stuff! Alan Gee zoomed them in with his camera. It just doesn't get any better! Thank you all for sharing this day. - 11 Participants: This week we hiked beyond the Lake George Rec Area trails to Berry Pond. This was the first time many of us had been there. It was definately a day for grippers! The trails were pure ice but just off the trails ... nothing. The pond itself is pretty small, but very interesting with plenty of fresh beaver activity. - 11 Participants: This week we went to the Saratoga Spa State Park and walked along the roads trying to avoid the ice in the shaded areas. It was a nice spring or winter walk and then we headed into Saratoga for lunch. Gothics Via Beaver Meadow Falls Trail Snowshoe Hike   Sat, Feb 11, 2012, Mike McLean
- 4 Participants: We hit the trail on a much warmer than predicted day with temperatures in the teens and traction devices on our feet right from the get go due to glare ice in the parking lot, along the Lake Road and especially on the steep climb adjacent to Beaver Meadow Falls. We exchanged crampons and micro-spikes for snow shoes at the large boulder a few hundred feet below the junction and finally enjoyed some powder snow to the summit of Gothics, where close up views of clouds and snow were had only. Back to the junction, we decided to throw in Armstrong as two folks had never climbed it. The views from the Armstrong summit ledge were just as good as from Gothics. We returned the way we came, making our way back over the tricky ladders, carefully down the ice and crunched our way back to the parking lot. A nice 12 mile hike with wonderful company. - 10 Participants: What a great day! We started with an awesome breakfast at Sweet Sue's and were astounded by how much Ravi and Rachel ate! We then headed up Tremper to work off the yummy meal. Nice weather, but snowshoes weren't needed - enough ice for microspikes though! Heart,Bear, and Rock Ponds Valentine Hike/snowshoe   Sat, Feb 11, 2012, Reg Prouty
- 5 Participants: Although there was not enough snow for snowshoeing, five of us had an enjoyable day of hiking the counter-clockwise loop of these three ponds. We spent a little time at each pond and had lunch at Rock Pond by the iron boiler and explored the cave after lunch. - 8 Participants: This month the group traveled a bit further to the Henning Preserve near Lake Desolation. Our group made quick work of finding the caches we were hunting for (except one) and we explored a few others in the nearby area and found a beautiful old cemetery and what was once a TB hospital. - 11 Participants: This week we walked along the Feeder Canal from Hudson Falls to Ft. Edward. The trail was mostly free of ice and we all had a nice walk. Isn't it suppose to be winter? Shouldn't we be skiing this trail? - 20 Participants: We had a great turnout and a beautiful sunny day, but not enough snow for snowshoes. The trail was a little confusing where private land had been logged, but we all made it to the top, where we enjoyed lunch. Andy of Saratoga PLAN shared the news that the county would transfer land at the summit to DEC, a first step in preserving access to this fire tower destination. South Meadows to Tahawus   Sun, Feb 19, 2012, Steve Mackey
- 3 Participants: The snow was a little sketchy at the beginning, but the further we skied, the better it got. By the time we reached Marcy Dam, other than a few big rocks, the skiing was excellent. We didn't have enough people to do the ski through, so we skied from South Meadows to the caretakers cabin at Lake Colden, and then back. We ran into an old ranger friend at Marcy Dam and he thought Maureen's electronic dog leash was a great idea, though he wasn't sure if it was legal. It was a great trip. - 8 Participants: This week we walked along the trail at the Hudson Ponte Preserve and were able to get over the bridge ... just barely! Afterwards, we walked along the ridge trail and headed back to the parking area. Although the trail was mostly clear, there was ice in a few places making grippers handy. - 8 Participants: This week we walked along the Feeder Canal from Hudson Falls towards Glens Falls. We haven't done this section in quite awhile. We enjoyed the springlike 'winter' day, each others company, and home-made molasses cookies. We also looked into the quarry just off Warren Street in Glens Falls before heading for coffee and a snack. Vista Trail from Shelving Rock to Erebus   Sun, Mar 4, 2012, Jayne Bouder
- 3 Participants: Road conditions had us starting from the State Trailhead, instead of Shelving Rock, and our revised route on small snowshoes and untracked trails took us a ways downhill before connecting to the Vista Trail. Just in time for the best scenic burnt bump, and on up until, thwarted by improbable horse trail markers, we lost the trail. Then, considering the 6/10ths mile, 700 ft. ascent to Erebus, we backtracked. We successfully navigated, encountering pterodactyl turkey tracks, and some other inexplicable ones, back to our own tracks below the Vista Trail. The long uphill slog back was lightened as the sky improved from somewhat overcast to intensely late day beautiful. Great hike! Participants: Jayne Bouder, Eric Kimmelman, and Leslie Seigard.

- 11 Participants: This week we walked around the Village of Lake George. We started at Million Dollar Beach and walked along the lake to Shepards Park. From there we continued North along Canada Street and then turned around and headed along the back streets to the Prospect Mtn trailhead. From there we headed to Cafe Vero for drinks and snacks before heading home! Nice little Village tour before the crowds of summer arrive! - 5 Participants: It was a beautiful winter day, a little cold, but not so cold that we couldn't hang out at the summit for a long time. We didn't need our snowshoes at all, but carried them with us just in case. At the summit, there was a big outings group from the University of Vermont that we got to visit with and exchange stories. They had come up from the Lake Colden side and informed us that it was very icy, so we took their advice and returned via Lake Arnold. We had a great energetic, enthusiastic group. Midmonth Geocache   Mon, Mar 12, 2012, Sarah King and Maureen Coutant  
- 5 Participants: Our monthly geocache hike this month was to Thomas Moutain. Our intent was to check out the new blue trail going up to the cabin on Thomas. We found the start of the trail marked by a geocache, which unfortunately was missing. We followed the plentiful blue markers up the trail, finding three caches along the way. We sat at the cabin enjoying the sunshine and lunch. We returned to the Thomas trailhead via the orange trail/logging road. Beautiful weather and good company made for a great time. Tuesday Outing   Tue, Mar 13, 2012, Maureen Coutant
- 14 Participants: This trip was really led by Anita Dingman. I think she's a 5th generation Hadley resident. She gave us a tour of the area. We saw the bow bridge and the park just down the road where you get an excellent view of the whitewater. We walked along some old trails that were once home to her Grandfather's business just downriver of Rockwell Falls. Then we crossed over to Luzerne and toured the library, the Upriver Cafe, and got a guided tour of the Adirondack Folk School. We walked by the one-room school house, the river flowing out of Lake Luzerne, and to a couple of beaches on Lake Luzerne. Finally, we stopped in to the Lamplighter Inn and we were given a tour and the history of that building! Thanks Anita for a wonderful tour and all the information about the area! Mt Marcy Snowshoe/crampon   Sun, Mar 18, 2012, Jean Holcomb
- 4 Participants: Well! After agonizing over the potential trail problems (ice, floods, sucking mud etc.) for this hike, the conditions for our Marcy showshoe/microspike turned out to be perfect. Due to high water on Marcy Brook we took the jeep road in from the South Meadow parking area which made this a 17 mile trip but the trail was so user friendly that it hardly made a difference. We had some mud and tacky ice below Indian Falls but the micro spikes handled everything with ease. From then on, it was packed down snow right to the top. In the mid day heat we had to change to snow shoes as the trail softened but we never had a problem with sticky snow or breaking crust. Ravi fell into a few spruce traps as the snowshoe trail led right over the krummholz but other than that all went smoothly. I topped out at 1 o'clock while the others all arrived within 45 minutes. It was the warmest most beautiful day I have ever spent on this peak and for most of the time we had it to ourselves. There was not a cloud in the sky and only a light breeze. It was all sort of magical. A great way to finish my winter 46. Many thanks to Jayne for being my faithful sweep and the other members of my little group for being there to celebrate with me. Tuesday Outing   Tue, Mar 20, 2012, Maureen Coutant
- 14 Participants: This was a great trip filled with little springtime surprises! We did a couple of very short hikes on the east side of Lake George, up to the Pilot Knob gazebo and another short hike just down the road. Both of these hikes give you a 'big bang for your buck' or great views with relatively little effort! Plus, we were treated to hearing spring peepers and the rare sound and sight of wood frogs - they sound like a flock of chickens. The first spring flower (hepatica) was spotted, a couple of snakes, a dead porcupine, a woodland hawk (maybe a coopers?), a raven, and it's nest with six eggs. The weather was summerlike and the Mackey's taught us how to whistle with an acorn top! It was a great day out! - 8 Participants: This turned out to be a wonderful hike. The rain held off, but the summit was pretty socked in. On our way down the sun made an appearance, which was great. We stopped to photograph some beautiful waterwalls and flowering trees after leaving the trailhead, then stopped at a local restaurant for lunch. - 21 Participants: Even though it was back to actual spring weather, we had a great turnout to enjoy a walk along the Wilkinson Trail at the Saratoga Battlefield. We saw plenty of deer, some red-tailed hawks, an American Kestrel, a garter snake, and the birders in the group probably identified some of the other birds we saw or heard. We had a quick picnic at the tables outside the visitor center to finish off the day! Good to get back there! - We had a great trip up the trail from the Lake George Rec Ctr to the top of Prospect. You start from a higher elevation than from the trail in the village and it's not as eroded, so it makes for an easier hike. Although you do miss walking over the Northway and waving to the cars. - This week we took a short walk through the Wilton Wildlife Preserve. We saw the firetower, the camp area, and walked the trails. - This was a beautiful day with a great group of fellow hikers on a journey to Moose Mountain Pond. The trail was very pleasant and led us to a great lookout over the pond. - We finally did the ridge trail between Cat and Thomas Mtns. We heard it was challenging and expected to walk on a slope and over blowdown the whole time. It didn't turn out to be the case at all. We all really enjoyed the trail and maybe stepped over one tree the whole day. We found all the caches but one, which we think a moose stole since there were signs of moose in the area. - This week we hiked French Mountai with landowner permission (of course!). It was the first time up for some. We enjoyed the view and snack on the lookout. We hunted for garbage on the way down the trail as part of our early Earth Day good deed. We didn't find much, so we took a side trip to the old Great Escape billboard and picked up garbage there ... and at least one tick! Be careful out there! Family-friendly Saratoga Spa Park Hike   Sun, Apr 22, 2012, Jill Gruben
- The weather held for an enjoyable brisk walk in the woods! A gregarious group touched bark, moss, mushrooms, and holes in trees made by woodpeckers. We pointed out tiny purple flowers, held onto sticks, and excitedly crossed bridges. A highlight of the hike was wading in a pond created by a downed tree! There was a lot of giggling and smiling. And for Earth Day, we picked up trash along the way! - We actually did this trip on Thursday to get better weather. It had been a long time since I'd been to the Bog Meadow Trail in Saratoga. The trail takes you along an old railroad track that was converted to a trail. The water in some areas was threatening to come up and over the trail, but it was in great condition and fairly dry that day. We enjoyed the viewing platform and the bog! - Ten able hikers reached the summit of Prospect, after a couple of unplanned side trips, by lunch time. Visibility was so good we could see the Corning tower in Albany with the naked eye. - This was a hiking day to remember! Every hiking bud did their part to make this a successful destination outing. We had to do some scouting along the way, but we all got there and back safely. A big thank you to everyone. Highlights of this hike were seeing Dug Mt. Falls, French Louie's grave site, bushwhacking to Jessup River and helping hands from Mark Janey, Jayne Bouder, Jean Holcomb and everyone else. (It just doesn't get any better). Bike trip Glens Falls to Schuylerville and back   Sun, Apr 29, 2012, Steve Mackey
- This ride was a nice distance; we got a good workout, but didn't overdo it. We biked south along the Hudson on West River Road on the way down, and then took Route 32 on the way back. We took a break at the Saratoga Monument in Schuylerville, but unfortunately it wasn't open. On the way by Butler Road, we stopped and visited my old friend 'Donny dayoff,' on his dairy farm near Bacon Hill. We had a 'bit' of a head wind on the way home, but 'if it doesn't kill you, it makes you stronger.' 2 Participants: Jim Coutant and Steve Mackey.

- On this trip we hiked Hadley Mtn at about the same time as the Crooked Canes group. So we mixed and mingled and had a chance to get other hiking ideas. We were on a hunt for the white trillium, but didn't see them that day. We did see plenty of other wildflowers and explored a section on top of Hadley called 'the garden.' Steve Gray gave us new information about that area and other little known Hadley history. Spring Bird Walk – Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park   Sat, May 5, 2012, Rich Speidel
- We observed two colorful birds right from the start: a rose-breasted grosbeak over the parking lot and Baltimore oriole near the pond. Another highlight came later, when we followed a ringing song to its source at a small woodland pond. After looking for a few minutes, we discovered the musician – a Louisiana waterthrush. This uncommon warbler comes to us from Mexico and Central America. Other notable sightings were kingbird, black-throated green warbler, and pine warbler. A great view of New York’s official bird--the eastern bluebird--capped off a fine morning afield with 40 species identified. 8 Participants: Patricia Brennan, Kathy Bryant, Fran Herve, Mark Janey, Gail Lansing, Licia Mackey, Edna Van Dorsten, and Rich Speidel.

Birding on the LGLC's Last Great Shoreline & Gull Bay Preserves   Sun, May 6, 2012, Laurie LaFond and Licia Mackey  
- We stopped briefly before the kiosk for the Last Great Shoreline. We spotted a pair of Wood Ducks, a Kingfisher, Northern Oriole, Killdeer, et al. We were thrilled to have decent views of six warblers, two vireos, the Great Crested Flycatcher, and Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, on the blue trail. When the woods were quiet, Foam Flowers, Gaywings and Columbine entertained us. An opening in the canopy and at the trails-end lake view afforded a glance at a Loon, flying gulls, Turkey Vultures and a Norther Harrier. At noon we headed south for a beautiful picnic overlook, on a spur of the rookery trail. There were 31 heron nests. Adults were watching over nests, turning eggs, incubating, or flying out for food. No little babies' heads were popping up yet. Eastern Kingbirds and Tree Swallows flitted about. A Red Shouldered Hawk flew near briefly. - For this month's geocache hunt, we returned to the Shelving Rock Mtn area. This time Licia came armed with her ADK map and we were glad that she did. After finding the caches and being on trails we never before explored, we decided to try to loop around back to our car without backtracking on the route we came up. Between the GPSs and the map, we did it, but I think everyone had their doubts and thought we might wind up on top of Erebus! 5 Participants: Mo Coutant, Steve Gray, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, and Brian Nichols.

- This week we walked along the trails in the Skidmore North Woods. We always try to go in May to enjoy the variety of wildflowers that can be found here. We didn't see many white trillium, but we did see some Mayapple, Canadian Mayflower, foam flowers and many others. - We met at the parking lot on Scout Road in the Town of Wilton's Camp Saratoga. First we headed north on some of the New Karner Butterfly habitat trails and witnessed several species of butterflies including the New Karner. Then we crossed the road and investigated some of the loops near the pond and ending up meeting one of the fire tower volunteers at the base of the tower. He gave us a great history of the fire tower, Camp Saratoga, and the families who made it possible. 4 Participants: Reg Prouty, Catherine Corrigan, Stewart Brown, and Mary Ann Moran.

Spring Bird Walk – Pack Forest, Warrensburg   Sat, May 12, 2012, Rich Speidel
- Sunny, warm weather made for a pleasant outing and a variety of birds. We first visited the old growth pine-hemlock forest and had a fine view of a Blackburnian warbler and its orange "fire throat." A pair of loons were on Pack Forest Lake, along with a great blue heron and two kingbirds near the shore. Other highlights included good numbers of least flycatchers, a pair of solitary (blue-headed) vireos, and magnolia and yellow-rumped warblers. - What a great day in the woods! There was a possibility of rain, but fortunately we didn't see any. Black flies and ants were a little bothersome around the summit, but not enough to diminish the overall fun and enjoyable day. - We started off the season with great weather for a paddle in the Glen Lake fen (wetland). It was a first for some of the paddlers. We managed to get close to the Great Escape and could have gone further, but decided not to try to go over the many beaver dams. The red-winged blackbirds sang for us and we saw a great blue heron and a few ducks and geese. Mt. Adams Fire Tower   Sat, May 19, 2012, Rich Crammond
- Blue sky, a mimimal amount of bugs, good temperature, and nice people to hike with, you can't ask for anything more. This was a rugged outing for sure, but we all did well. Highlights were brown snakes along the trail, good fodder, wildflowers and sweet smelling balsam fir, splashing across the Hudson and Lake Jimmy, the great view from the tower cab, and Jen body dipping in the 'cold' Hudson, another rugged ADK Lady. Best of luck with her leading outings in the future! Thank you fellow hikers. Spring Bird Walk & Climb – Pack Forest, Warrensburg   Sat, May 19, 2012, Rich Speidel
- We were blessed with ideal weather for watching birds; sunny and warm with calm wind. A singing white-throated sparrow in full view was an early highlight, along with a purple finch. Later we observed a pair of loons on Pack Forest Lake, a yellow-rumped warbler, and three kingbirds in a tree overhead. A scarlet tanager sang from a tree top as we started up Ben Wood Mountain. We were fortunate to see the male tanager’s brilliant red plumage within the green tree canopy. Near the summit we had an amazingly long close-up of a hermit thrush, quietly holding in place several yards away. A clear view from the scenic overlook added to a nice day in the field, and 37 species of birds on our list. 7 participants: Gabe Bedore, Rob Bedore, Virginia Carluccio, Cathy Corrigan, Bruce Goodale, Mary Ann Moran, Rich Speidel.

YMG - Hurricane Mountain Fire Tower   Sun, May 20, 2012, Jen Shepherd
- What a great day for a hike. It was sunny and blue skies all day. We encountered some mud, a snake or two, a lady slipper and did some puddle splashing along the way. Some of us did a little more puddle splashing than others even if it wasn't intentional! It was a beautiful yet hot day with a welcome breeze on the summit where Jon found his 100th geocache. Congrats Jon! An extra bonus to the day was swimming in Chapel Pond after the hike. - Two families enjoyed a path through the pines. We saw tons of toads! And they came in an array of colors. We also saw a few snakes. The black flies were out and nibbling, but not overly aggressive. - This week we walked along the Feeder Canal from the beginning to the Rt 9 Bridge. We were treated to an amazing sight! Along the trail a snapping turtle dug a hole for her eggs and as we gathered around, at a reasonable distance, we were able to watch her lay her eggs! It was amazing! They looked like ping pong balls. John saw a muskrat (or maybe a young beaver) on Second Lake, and a Veery serenaded us as the sun sank. Most negotiated (or avoided) the three beaver dams, downed trees and quick current without incident. Charlie's bailer and/or Joy's flawless kayak over kayak 'rescue' assisted the two who swam. Jim opted for an early dinner when a snag snapped his beautiful paddle. We walked along the canal from Hudson Falls to Fort Edward and its great birding habitat. We had 2.5 birders in the group, so they were able to id a scarlett tanager, black throated somethings, yellow something elses, and many other birds ... that I would have called 'birds' or maybe robin. Saddleback and Basin   Sat, Jun 2, 2012, Cole Hickland
- We had to reschedule this trip becasuse of rain and lightning in the forecast. Our new date of June 30 had six hikers that wanted to get Haystack, Saddleback and Basin. Several hikers had tickets for the Jazz fest and couldn't make the new date. We got an early start and headed in to JBL and then on to Haystack. The winds on top were amazing, we could lean in to the wind and it would hold us up. It was a very cool day. When we got down to the short cut trail, two hikers opted to head to JBL and wait for us and the other four continued on over the very steep trail to get the other two and head down the Ore bed trail. We were amazed to see the trail work on the new slide on the trail. If you haven't hiked it for a while you should go see the stairs going up the side of the slide. We got down to JBL and met our other two hikers and all headed out to the cars and made it just before dusk. Amazing views from all three mountains but Haystack sets a high bar. - We had lots of cancellations and/or additions at the last minute, but ended up with a strong and enthusiastic group. We also had great weather and hardly any bugs. I haven't been in the Dix's in a few years and I was surprised how good the herd paths are. In the old days we use to always go with somebody that had been there before, so we knew where to begin the herd paths and where all the turns were, but I don't think that is necessary any more. I don't think I even got any scratches. After Dix, we mentioned that Neal Andrews once did this hike and then added Nippletop and Dial. Blue Mountain Fire Tower Hike   Sat, Jun 9, 2012, Rich Crammond
- If I had to come up with one word for this outing it would be...different. But we all came back to the trailhead safely from a wet trail. Highlights of this trip were the great views form the tower cab, meeting two participants half way up the trail, getting a note from the good doctor back at North Creek and feeling very humble at the end of the day from this outing. Thanks to all for hiking along on this great day in the Adirondacks. It just doesn't get any better. Birding Field Trip - Washington County Grasslands   Sat, Jun 9, 2012, Laurie LaFond and Rich Speidel  
- Our combined walk and drive around the Fort Edward Grasslands delivered a wide variety of birds throughout the day. They ranged from the small and agile (willow flycatcher, American redstart, nesting cliff swallows), to medium size songbirds (orchard oriole, bobolink, meadowlark), to the raptors (red-tailed hawk, northern harrier, kestrel). Seeing these larger birds on the hunt over open country is always a thrill. Other common sightings included savannah sparrow, yellow warbler, yellowthroat, bluebird, and mockingbird. Following the grasslands circuit, we had afternoon "bonus birding" at a nearby field and woodland where we heard the flutelike songs of hermit and wood thrushes. - During the summer months we sometimes do our geocaching from kayaks. That's what we did this month with an exploratory mission down the Kayderosseraustricerotops(that might as well be it's name!). We put in at Rt 9 and had to work our way over two different sections of blowdown, but after that it was smooth sailing. We found eight caches along the way with one other that we couldn't find before calling it a day and heading across Saratoga Lake. Once we got to the lake, the wind and waves had us surfing! There weren't too many motor boats out on a Monday, so there were no troubles getting to the launch. 5 Particpants: Mo Coutant, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Marjory and Tom Moeller.

- This week we did a Saratoga Hodge Podge. We started at the Hemlock Trail which is part of Saratoga State Park, but on the east side of Rt 9 and not nearly as well used as the main park. We found bridges in disrepair and almost dangerous - good scout project potential! Ironically, on a side trail that was very overgrown we found a new bridge that was amazing. From there we went over to Yaddo and walked through the gardens. The roses were blooming and the volunteers were working, but we didn't stop to help! We continued on to the Spring Run Trail which is just off Rt 50 near the beverage center and hot dog stand. Just a short trail but really nice. We decided it would be a great rollerblading spot! - This week we went to the Spier Falls section of the Hudson River. It's always a favorite and we had a beautiful evening out. We paddled down to the coves and some of us got out to have a picnic dinner on the rocks while others ate while floating. - Buck Mountain is always a worthwhile climb. This time was no exception. - We got this trip in right before the heat wave hit! There we just a few of us, but we were glad to get out and enjoy the nice almost-officially-summer day. This is the end of the midweek hikes/walks for me for the season, since school ends and my daughter will be keeping me even busier than ADK! Plus, I'd rather paddle during the summer! Thanks to all that have come out on the trips during the past season. We've all shared our talents, contacts, and info with each other and I even learned to identify a couple of birds despite my ineptitude! It's doubtful that I'll remember them in a year though! - This turned out to be a very hot day so we ended up with only two of us. The temperature was quite a bit better in the shade, so in actuality it wasn't too bad. We saw a few other hikers, but pretty much had the mountain to ourselves. We were a little late getting out, but the kayaking group waited for us in the park, so we were all able to have dinner together. 2 Participants: Patty Campbell and Steve Mackey.

Longest Day Evening Paddle & Picnic   Wed, Jun 20, 2012, Maureen Coutant
- Five or six people cancelled on the day of the outing due to the extreme heat and I can't say that I blamed them. I was actually wondering if I should postpone, but how can you postpone the longest day? So, I went up to the Lake and was surprised to be joined by 11 other paddlers! By 5:30, the weather really wasn't too hot. I soaked my life jacket, Joy went for a dip, and everyone else at least waded in with their boats. So we were somewhat cooled off. Then we paddled North along the shore and it was just marvelous. There were hardly any motor boats, the water was as flat as I've ever seen it, and the view of the mountains up the lake were just breathtaking. The sun on Mark's boat made it look like it was glowing. It was truly a wonderful night. Then I felt bad that those 5 or 6 who cancelled. - We dodged the storm bullet as there was quite a bit of thunder and lightning on the approach to the summit. The rain held off, however, until the return trip down. - The weather wasn't sunny and nice for our adventure, but it was still a great day. We had a little light rain off and on but it didn't stop us from making our food and water delivery to Steve, the new summer summit guide. It was an easy, leisurely pace to the summit where we became a black fly buffet. All seven of us plus Steve crowded on various levels of the fire tower to eat lunch and escape the swarms. There was an educational chat on the history of the fire tower in the cab and Steve was even nice enough to give us a quick tour of the cabin before we headed out. Between us all we delivered almost five gallons of water, apples, bananas, a bag of oranges, peanut butter, scooby snacks, backpacker's pantry meals and a few other things. The delivery was greatly appreciated. - This hike was originally overbooked, but turns out 13 of us actually made it to the trailhead. The actual summits do not have views but we managed to wander just a few yards to find some. Monthly Geocache   Mon, Jul 9, 2012, Sarah King and Maureen Coutant  
- For our geocache outing this month, we stayed close to home and set out to find a couple of caches at the Lake George Rec Center. We were happy to have an aspiring geocacher, Pam King-Hall join the group. We set out from the parking lot to search for two caches here that Sarah hadn't found yet, helping Pam to get to hang of using a gps. We stopped at a previously found 'micro' at the start of the trail to Berry Pond to show Pam the trail and what a 'micro' looked like. On to the first cache we had marked, which we found easily. Off to find #2. Mo, who was running late, caught up to the group at our second stop, 'Babbling Gage Brook.' It was early so we decided to search for another close-by cache to show Pam another hide and then a stop on the way back at another cache near the waterfall. 4 Participants: Sarah King, Mo Coutant, Licia Mackey and Pam King-Hall.

- This week a rain storm hit just before we headed out, which kept the boat traffic down at the Stewart Dam Reservoir. We went out to see if we could spot the bald eagles that we frequently hear are in the area. Luck was on our side and we saw the family. After watching them for awhile we continued our paddle. At the boat launch area we witnessed a high dive (jump) show from one of the many rope swings in the area. Better them than us! - Wow. What a day! Hot. Humid. But, that didn't stop our group. The parking lots was full and 80+ hikers had signed in. Our large group was spead out. We took the traditional route of Bradley Pond to Panther. There were great views from Panther, but Couch was calling us in the distance. You know you're with your kind of people when everyone is showing off their best scratchs. We regrouped at time square, then were off to Santanoni. We took the Old new trail or New old trail back. The trail had plenty of duff to soften the hike down. We managed to get out without lamps. Special thanks to Cole Hickland for helping me co-lead this hike. - It was a good day to be hiking in the Adirondacks except for those nasty little deer flies, EEKS! Wilson Pond is just a nice place with a lean-to to go with it. Highlights of the outing were Mitch and his Loon calls, Reg with his pocket horn, and the bloomed out Pickerel Weed along the trail. It don't get no better than that! - This week we paddled upstream on the Hudson River from the Feeder Canal dam almost to the remnants of the logging booms. The wind was at our back making for an easy float, but the wind seemed to be picking up and making white caps, so we cut the trip a little short and turned back before reaching the booms. It was probably a good idea since it was definately a work out to go against the wind. My request for the wind to turn off must not have been received! - Seven of us dodged the bad weather that was both to the north and to the south of Giant and we were able to spend an hour for lunch and a mini pocket trumpet concert on the summit. We could see some of the Schroon-Lake and Lake George region and the Dix Range and Great Range to the south. - We decided to embark on the less traveled route to the top of Phelps via South Meadows. We were in the deep woods right up until we emerged onto the summit. The coolness of the forest kept the heat from overtaking us and the beauty of the almost untouched terrain made for a different High Peak climbing experience. - Once again Allen lives up to it's mystical name, 'The Big Nasty.' Being deep in the Adirondack Wilderness, we were blessed with a hot and humid day. Water crossings were less than knee deep, except for a shakey part of Lake Jimmy Bridge were Katherine tested the healing effects of it's murky waters. We had some falls on Allen's famous red slime. The summit provided us with great views and we had three 46er finishers - Colleen, Dan, and Karen. It was quiet an honor to have you on this hike. Congrats to everyone who got Allen; it's always a tough one. Our group size caught the attention of a DEC officer. - This week we did another section of the Hudson River. We paddled from just above the dam near Rt 9 up to the Feeder Canal dam. It was a beautiful evening and some in the group saw a beaver or two - unless it was a muskrat. A turtle and osprey were also spotted. We paddled longer or slower than I anticipated and missed most of the Stony Creek Band concert that was going on back at the launch site. But we had musical accompaniment while finishing the trip, loading up the car, and saying goodbye. About half the group went over to the gazebo and listened to the end of the concert. Great way to finish off the outing ... to bad the hot dog vendor had left! Bullhead Mt. Crash Site Bushwhack   Sat, Aug 11, 2012, Rich Crammond
- This was a wet but good hike. We didn't make it to the crash site but came very close! We will try again next spring when there is much less undergrowth. A rugged outing for sure but rewarding also, like not hiking in the downpour that came after we got back in our truck. We lucked out big time! - First a huge thanks to Mike Fuller for being my co-lead and making sure we stayed on track. What an awesomely perfect day! We had excellent hiking weather and a group of very enthusiastic hikers. Skylight and Gray were just not enough so we added Mt. Marcy to our plans as an added bonus. Our first stop was Gray, after taking some photos at Lake Tear we crossed the mighty Hudson and headed up. The view was great with Mt. Marcy so close we could see people on the summit. After Gray, we had lunch at Lake Tear where we celebrated Mike's Birthday with some Little Debbie fancy cakes, homemade brownies and rice krispie treats. When everyone was good and stuffed we were off to four corners to drop our packs and visit Skylight. The view from Skylight is pretty amazing. Everyone was sure to carry a rock up to avoid rain. As nice as the summit of Skylight was we still had one more peak for the day. Once back at four corners we reloaded with our packs and headed up to Mt. Marcy. On the summit we had a little celebratory toast, gave the summit steward a few good laughs and got him to take several group shots, then headed back out on the Van Hoevenberg trail to the cars. I couldn't have had a better group of people on a more perfect day. The laughs just never stopped and although the day was long, it was extremely rewarding. - We had a great, sweaty day in the woods! While the blueberries were no longer abundant, we were able to find a few to satisfy an eager five-year-old. The day was, however, made sweeter by an old friend trekking all the way from Montreal to join us! The day was positively beautiful and we had fantastic views of northern Lake George and Lake Champlain. Aftwerwards, we all went for ice cream! - We were hoping to do something a little different, and I guess you can say we succeeded in that regard. There were about five spots where the current was strong and the water was shallow. They were kind of fun on the way down, but not so much on the way back. We had a flip or two, a lost and retrieved paddle, and quite a bit of wading and dragging kayaks, but in general all went well. I was happy that everybody was a good sport and went with the flow (even when we weren't going with the flow). I got a kick watching Mike, George, and Mark paddling hard against the current and not moving forward an inch. If we do it again in the future, we hope to be able to spot a car at 1,000 Acres and just paddle downstream. 8 Participants: Mark Janey, Joy Muller-McCoola, Terry Peek, Bill Glendening, Mike George, George Sammons, and Steve and Licia Mackey.

YMG - Snowy Mountain Fire Tower   Sat, Aug 25, 2012, Jen Shepherd
- Yet another incredible day on the trails. The day was gorgeous although a little humid at times. We were fortunate to have a nice breeze through most of the hike. We made good time up to the first lookout where we enjoyed some lunch and met some fellow ADK people that were just out for a nice hike on their own. After lunch a few of us wandered to another ledge and lookout where we spotted the Wakely Fire Tower. From there is was on to the Snowy Fire Tower where Bill finished his fire tower challenge. Congratulations Bill! Once everyone had a chance to enjoy the views from the top of the tower, there was a group photo and we began the trip back out. Five of the seven participants stopped off at a very nice swimming hole in the town of Indian Lake for a refreshing swim. What a great find. Thanks to the guy on the Snowy summit for the info! What better way to finish off a hike and swim than with Stewart's ice cream? It was another great adventure with terrific people. Sawteeth and Gothics   Sun, Sep 2, 2012, Wayne Richter
- What a spectacular day for a late summer hike! The recent cold front treated us to clear skies, low humidity, a mostly sunny day, pleasant temperatures and a touch of a breeze. It was a cold start early in the day but the walk up the Lake Road soon got us warmed up. Following a snack at the Lower Ausable Lake Dam, we started on the Scenic Trail, first along and then above the lake with great views of the lake and Indian Head on its far side. The views got better as we climbed until we reached the summit of Sawteeth for lunch. It was then down to the col and up to Pyramid where we saw some climber friends of some of the hike members on Gothics's south face. Our final ascent took us to the summit of Gothics with its stupendous approaches and widespread views. We chatted for a while, then Rachel suggested we have a few minutes of quiet. The silence that descended deepened our appreciation for the grand view before us, until broken finally by the arrival a couple and their friendly dog. After descending the Beaver Meadow Trail and enjoying a short look at the falls, our final treat was to see the upper two-thirds of Giant set aglow by sinking sun. 8 participants: Pam Barbeau, Aaren Harris, Helen Hokula, Carol Klepper, Yan Ny Tan, Pat Reilly, Wayne Richter, and Rachel Sloan.

- This week we paddled from the Hudson River boat launch that you see when you're driving up the Northway between Exit 17 and 18. We headed west to the big beaver dam near the Hudson Pointe Preserve. Dix and Hough   Sun, Sep 9, 2012, Cole Hickland
- Sometimes you get lucky with the weather and we sure did for this trip. Eleven of us worked our way from Elk Lake to Dix via Hunters Pass to enjoy amazing views and some very good plum pie baked and delivered by Hugh Davis. A slight wind and clear skies with some clouds to provide texture made for perfect viewing. We followed the ridge over to Hough which provided a spectacular view of Dix and the Beckhorn. There were a few steep parts coming back up Dix but we worked as a group to hand up packs, Richard Staley acted as a rock climbing coach to talk other hikers up the rocks and Bill Barton went last because he needed no help. He climbs like spiderman. Our return to Elk Lake was via the Beckhorn trail, which was quite steep in places, but we took it very slow and all made it down in one piece. - Once you start geocaching you'll start hearing people saying that the thing they like the best about geocaching is that it brings you to new areas. That was the case this month with a trip to Bolton to a new Lake George Land Conservancy property. It's called Amy's Park or the Padanarum Preserve which is a wonderful little area that includes a few short trails that overlook a marshy area. We found all the caches and enjoyed a nice morning out in this new preserve. - This week we paddled a section of the Hudson that we hadn't done before. We started in a familiar boat launch between Corinth and Lake Luzerne, but instead of going towards Lake Luzerne we paddled downstream towards Corinth. It was a nice calm evening and the setting sun took the chill off. It was a nice paddle towards Corinth with the current and sun. The way back definately took a little longer but thankfully the current wasn't too strong and there was no wind. We got back to the boat launch just as it was getting dark. There was a beaver or muskrat swimming nearby but we couldn't tell which in the fading light. 7 Participants: Mo Coutant, Bill Glendening, Licia and Steve Mackey, George Sammons, Alison Saville, and Charlotte Smith.

Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge Traverse   Sat, Sep 22, 2012, Mike Fuller
- For a iffy weather day we had a wicked fun time. After spotting a car at New Russia we went to Chapel Pond and started up Giant. It didn't take long before we were in the clouds. There's something beautiful about mist blowing though the alpine. Soon we on the summit, WOW! For a day with no veiw there were plenty of hikers. We posed for group shot, looking at all thoses smiles. We were making our own sunshine. Jen thanks for sending the group photo. Off to Rocky where the wind picked up. We went down to Marie Louise Pond to have lunch. You could almost see her ghost in the fog on the pond. From there, Steve, Rick, Bill & Erika went ahead to retrieve the cars. We did have some injuries. Venus broke a nail and Madj broke his thumb. I suggessed amputation to take care of the injuries, It's the best placebo. We did get a break in the clouds on Bald Peak, the rain only got us for 5 minutes on are way back to cars. We also checked out an old grave yard off the trail. - Fall treated us to a great hiking day: Fall foliage was well on its way with lots of vibrant reds on some hill slopes and more muted yellows on others. At the same time, blustery winds that chilled us down and limited our time on the summit let us know that colder weather is yet to come. We had a spectacular start through the glories of Avalanche Pass and Avalanche Lake. It was then along the east shore of Lake Colden before beginning the steep ascent up Colden's western slope. We took our time up the wet, slanty bedrock while the views got better as we ascended. Clear air on a day closely divided between sun and clouds gave us a great summit experience while we ate lunch. We descended the gentler eastern side and stopped for a snack while enjoying Lake Arnold. - We had a beautiful fall day to enjoy our trip up Roostercomb. Most of the group had never climbed this peak even though they'd driven by the parking lot many times. I think this might be a trip that they return to with family and friends. It's one of those hikes with a lot of bang for the buck ... or view for the ascent! Mt. Marshall   Sat, Sep 29, 2012, Jen Shepherd and Mike Fuller  
- Mt. Marshall is notorious for mud on the nicest of days but I didn't pick the nicest day for this hike. We began our adventure at Upper Works bundled in our rain gear. While the rain wasn't very heavy all morning, it was persistent. I think most of us managed to stay mostly dry until sometime after we got onto the unmarked section of trail. We followed the stream a large portion of the way. I myself was fascinated by all the mini waterfalls and cascades mixed with the damp fall colors of the day. Thanks to Mike for leading the way! On the summit we met the Albany ADK chapter led by Claudia. It's always great to run into fellow hikers you know on summits. They came in from the Loj. Two people in their group had just finished their 46. Very cool. We didn't stay on the summit long, the only view was a cloud and after being wet most of the day it was chilly to stay still any length of time. My very knowledgeable co-leader knew of a plane wreck down the other side of the summit so we took a different trail back down into Indian Pass. The plane wreck made the day in my opinion. After some photos, a hilarious fall by me (sorry Bill you missed the photo) and some snacks & conversation, we began our journey back to the cars. It was wet and muddy, but everyone did a fantastic job and we got another high peak. - This was a rainy week and we wound up doing the trip since it looked like there might be a chance to get the trip in between the showers. Plus every other day that week didn't look much better. So, only the Mackey's were crazy enough to join me and we didn't paddle in the rain until we turned around...maybe we shouldn't have turned around?? I knew we wouldn't have a big crowd so we paddled the section of the Hudson above the Spier Falls dam towards Corinth. When we just got started, we saw something swimming across the river. We thought maybe a beaver, but too small. A muskrat? no. Turns out it was a gray squirrel. - This was a wet but great day to be on the trail in the Adirondacks. No Bugs, cool temps, nice fall colors and hiking buds to share the day with. Overlook Fire Tower & Hotel Ruins Mystery   Sat, Oct 13, 2012, Jen Shepherd
- Our trip to the Overlook fire tower was quite the adventure today. Since this was a Halloween hike, costumes were encouraged. We had the cutest zebra ever (Rachel), a Hawaiian tourist? (Lavinia), pharmacist (Majde), a Pirate (Ravi) and a fluffy kitty (me). It was a chilly start up the trail but as we got moving we warmed right up. The group spent some time at the old hotel ruins taking photos, eating cookies and listening to the beginning of a Halloween story. Each hiker inspired a character in the story. Unfortunately for Ravi, his character was killed off rather early. From the hotel we were off to the fire tower where the group enjoyed some homemade individual apple pies (thanks Erica), more cookies and apple cider. A little more of the story was told then we went over to see the spectacular views of the scenic overlook. The sun was shining, the skies were blue with a hint of wind and a crisp fall chill in the air but the day was amazing and there were smiles all around. After the overlook our group headed back to the tower to explore, climb and enjoy more of the incredible views. Before heading back out we heard the rest of the Halloween story. It was a combination of murder/mystery, love and a happy ending. We grabbed a couple group shots and began our walk back to the cars. It was such a lovely day, I personally wasn't ready for it to be over so the entire group decided to meet up at PF Changs for a late lunch! - We seemed to be jinxed with trying to do geocaching on Sleeping Beauty. One time the gate was closed, this time we got part way in to be turned around by a prison guard supervising a work crew. So, we had a shorter outing than we planned and found some other caches off the Shelving Rock Road. Fingers crossed...we'll get in there soon! Participants: Mo Coutant, Sarah King, and Licia Mackey

- Well, it was a little chilly and we got started a little later than I'd hoped due to the fact my paddle was left in my garage. Luckily, my neighbor met me 1/2 way so I didn't have to use my hands as Steve suggested! We paddled along the Dunhams Bay outlet of Lake George. We went with the current and breeze at the beginning of the trip and by the time we turned around the wind had decreased which we greatly appreciated...along with Don's amusing stories! 1/2 the group saw a beaver. - As advertised...it was a beautiful fall hike. We decided to check out the newish blue trail up to Thomas since a couple of participants had gone that way and said it is very well marked. That is now going to be the only way I go! Just a beautiful trail through the woods instead of up the old logging road. You also get a nice view and then over to the cabin on top of the mountain...if only it still had a stove - and a door! After a short rest there, we hiked along the ridge trail with it's many ups and downs. The leaves covering some slippery spots caused us to take some extra time and butt slide in a couple of places, but again...better than the logging road. - We had a small but great group of hikers today! And even with the overcast views from the summit there were still some great cloud formations to view around the distant mountain tops. - Hurricane Sandy squashed this trip - although it wasn't as bad as expected here - the wind would have made for too much of a workout for any of us! See you next year!!

Wakely Fire Tower   Sat, Nov 3, 2012, Jen Shepherd
- The weather forecast called for snow in the Indian Lake area and we got it! We enjoyed a few inches of packable powder all the way to the summit. We also passed some fellow ADK members along the way, it was great see you Alison and John! On the summit a few brave souls climbed all the way to the top of the snow and ice covered Wakely fire tower. They said the cold was brutal but they get bragging rights for going all the way up! There was a brief rest on the summit for snacks, group photos and a surprise gift for 4 members of the group that recently became 46R's. Congrats again to Colleen, Susan, Joanne and Nick!! The cold temperatures, falling snow and a semi frozen hike leader made for a hasty retreat back down the trail. It was a perfect day on the trails with some incredible people. - This week we walked around Moreau State Park's lower trails. Laurie is a regular hiker here and she lead the way on some of the lesser known trails and pointed out new beaver activity, a tamarack tree, signs of wildlife and many other interesting things like weird frost. Thank you Laurie! We ended our walk in the warming hut having a snack beside the fire. A perfect day out and about! Monthly Monday Geocache trip   Mon, Dec 3, 2012, Sarah King and Maureen Coutant  
- We decided to do a shorter hike and fewer caches today, as both Sarah and Mo had after school child activities to attend. We decided on Ben Wood Mountain in Warrensburg, which is accessed off old Route 9 in Pack Forest. We entered from the northern end of old route 9, as the road is better on that end. It was a nice day with no snow or ice and nice wide trails to the top. We looked for 3 caches, one at the trailhead, one aptly named, Turn Here, and one at the summit. It was difficult to get a satellite signal at the trailhead. As four of the five gps's waited for one, Sarah got a fix and led the way to the first cache. It was better as we ventured up the mountain. We had a new cacher, adkburt, with us, and we used the short hike and three caches to show him the ropes. One of the benefits of our Monday hikes are homemade treats! Thanks Licia for the nice snack at the summit. - We detoured to visit Flat Rock Swamp, bright in the morning sun, on our way up. The views above were nice, and the audience appreciative. Finding markers kept us alert. This place has been open for years, but the route is still lightly tramped (and marked, in some places). That's how we got to pace out a large, freshly flooded and chewed beaver area on the way back. This is a great local day hike! 3 Participants: Jayne Bouder, Marcia Hansen, and Paul Dean.

- This week we walked along the Bog Meadow trail in Saratoga, not far from the malls. We had a nice day for a walk along the wetland area and we even saw a garter snake sunning itself on the trail. That was a first for most of us - seeing a snake out in December. Winter had not really hit us at this point. - What a great day to be on the trail. We just enjoyed the cold, but dry weather, in a real nice place. My thanks to Steve and Tom for sharing this day in the great out-doors.
