Tuesday Outing   Tue, Jan 3, 2017, Mo Coutant
- We actually did this walk on Thursday to avoid the bad weather on Tuesday. We hiked the Harry Betar Walkway in South Glens Falls. This is a walk along the river from the gazebo down to the Sandbar Beach in South Glens Falls. We also walked up the hill to the bluff section of the walk. This is a loop that begins along a bluff with a gazebo that looks across to Haviland Cove and over to the Feeder Canal walking area. Some in the group had never been on the walkway and others didn't know about the part up the hill! I always enjoy introducing people to a spot they haven't been to. Dial and Nippletop, High Peaks   Sat, Jan 7, 2017, Wayne Richter and Mike Fuller  
- It was a cold day for a hike, starting out a few degrees below zero and never getting much above. The complete absence of wind, however, made for a remarkably pleasant and comfortable day. We began with mostly clear skies and a leisurely walk, chatting our way up the Lake Road. Once off the road and on our way up to Nippletop, we had barely enough snow for snowshoes. By the time we got to Elk Pass, the snow was deep and thick on the trees. The snow, having followed rain earlier in the week, coated the branches all the way around, giving us a true winter wonderland. The skies clouded up as we ascended, so we were mostly socked in at Nippletop. Fortunately, we had some clearing along the way to Dial and had some nice views from its summit. Perhaps more amazing was how Mark stood comfortably with his shirt off for several minutes. Monday Monthly Geocache   Mon, Jan 9, 2017, Sarah King and Mo Coutant  
- Three hearty women (and Charlie) headed to East Greenbush Town Park on this very, very cold day. I think it was about 10 degrees as we exited the car. There were about 14 caches in this nice park with 3 loop trails, one of which followed along the large pond here. As I mentioned, it was very cold with not much snow to speak of, but the trails were icy. We stopped to put on our grippers as we walked them. Julie, a first time geocacher, joined Mo and Sarah and we were able to show her several different types and sizes of caches from the winter friendly, puzzle cache, a chirp cache to micros, nanos and ammo cans. She even got to experience a 4 terrain difficulty. We found all but one and then headed to Dunkin Donuts for a celebratory (it was Julie's birthday) hot beverage and snack. We joked about what to sign the logs here, Charlie's Angels, 3 cool chicks, but decided on 3 Birthday Girls as it was Julie's birthday and Sarah's tomorrow and Mo later in the month. Tuesday Outing   Tue, Jan 10, 2017, Mo Coutant
- This week we did a Fire Tower Challenge hike to Spruce Mtn in Corinth. I hadn't been up in quite awhile and was glad to see the trail well marked and easy to follow. I was really surprised to find the cab of the tower open and most of the group went up and checked it out. This is one of the summits that really benefits from the view from the Fire Tower. Even just climbing a few flights of stairs gives you a much better view! Thanks to all that made it possible to open up the trail and the Fire Tower! Wilton Wildlife Trails   Sat, Jan 14, 2017, Reg Prouty
- Unfortunately there was not enough snow left for either snowshoes or skis but we did a hike on microspikes as the trail was extremely icy, so much that we could not even have been able to stand up without the spikes. We did a counter-clockwise outer loop going over as far as where the old Ballard Road barn used to be. It was a beautiful day for a walk in the woods, though. Six hikers: Reg Prouty, Alan Gee, Liz Gee, Mary Alice Nyhan, Chrissie Bombard, and Don Washburn.

Tuesday Outing   Tue, Jan 17, 2017, Mo Coutant
- The birthday ski in the ADKs didn't work out due to a lack of snow, so we put that idea on hold for another week. Instead we walked at the Hudson Pointe Preserve in Queensbury. I was dog sitting, so we made it a dog hike. We were happy to be able to get to the bridge on the Hudson River...just barely. The water was just up to the top of the boards leading up to the floating bridge. It was very icy with microspikes a must! Actually, I guess we could have used crampons since we had a few slips even with the microspikes! We walked the lower trail and then up to the trail along the bluff overlooking the lower trail and the river. Fun little outing ending with a bite to eat at Paneras! Hudson Crossing / New Year Outing   Sat, Jan 28, 2017, Rich Crammond
- Such a nice day for January eagle watch. We put our microspikes on to be a little safer on the trail. I think everyone had a good time. I went back to the Dix bridge solo after the hike to glass again for eagles and saw one soaring around down river. Anyway, we had a nice day and talked to some nice local folks, too. Pyramid and Gothics   Sat, Jan 28, 2017, Steve Mackey
- Between the cancellations and no-shows we ended up with only two of us, so this obviously can't be considered an official ADK hike. However, we did go, and we did summit, and we did have full blown winter conditions. The skiing was pretty close to excellent. The snow up high was deep and powdery, and we had to bust our butts, breaking trail all day. The last quarter of Pyramid is really steep, and every step required a lot of extra effort to not slide back down to where the step began. Maureen was a real trooper and led half of the way or more. The summits were cold and windy and we had to be careful that we didn't get frostbite on our faces. The cloud cover was semi low, so the views were only okay. We got some nice pictures. I got one on Pyramid where the trail marker was only a couple of inches above the snow line. We took a time reading when we left Lower Ausable Lake, and it only took a half hour to ski all the way out. We met up with friends and family and all went out to dinner afterward. Ski Botheration Pond Loop   Sun, Jan 29, 2017, Bill Schwarz
- It wasn't looking good--the Lower Sacandage bridge collapsed 2 months ago, meaning it couldn't be a loop trip, nor had there been much snow. So we went further along the Old Farm trail toward Siamese Ponds instead, and found a recent snowfall (The day before! Powder!). Still, there were challenges--bypassing or sidestepping the gullies. A good outing with a surprising amount of snow--hope it lasts. Participants: Jim Amell, Ray Boucher, Theresa Devlin, Bill Schwarz.

- My thanks to Ralph Keating and Mary Alice Nyhan for our wonderful tour of Anchor Diamond Park at Hawkwood. The park (just a bit off Route 50, near Ballston Lake) is a joint project between Saratoga PLAN and Ballston Spa. Ralph led us along the now wooded Old Field Trail where Mary Alice said Mr. Taylor (former owner and doner) remembers picking strawberries. Ralph enouraged us to revisit the Hemlock Trail for a quiet listen to nature's music. Today the mystery of the fireplace was cause for speculation. We crossed a the meandering stream on unimproved bridges and headed to the wetland. An old beaver dam was obvious. A viewing platform is planned for this location. Winding around the Stonewall Trail led us to a well and building foundation of the Hawkwood Estate. It was interesting to note the undulating topography of the Red Maple Trail. We were delighted with the amazing bridge work of a local scout. Mary Alice noted the stream, now running high, had been completely dry this summer. Our thanks to Ralph and Mary Alice for a pleasant and informative 4 mile hike. Nye and Street Sat, Feb 4, 2017, Wayne Richter and Mike Fuller
- We had snow and fine weather, a great day for snowshoeing. The snow was thick on the branches, making for beautiful high elevation hiking in a winter wonderland. The skies clouded up by the time we got to Street, but it was still beautiful. The most wondrous aspect of this hike, though, was the return of Jen Feriss's wedding ring. Jen lost her ring hiking the Sewards back in 2015. Unknown to Jen, Mike Fuller found the ring a week later. Hiking together in January, they discovered the connection. Mike brought the ring to the Nye and Street hike and ceremoniously presented it to Jen! (See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A_cMS8ub0pY&feature=youtu.be.) Monthly Monday Geocache Mon, Feb 6, 2017, Sarah King and Mo Coutant
- We had a great day to do a bit of hiking at Moreau Lake State Park today. Temps were seasonable. We were here to find 13 caches that were placed as part of the Winter 33, 33 caches placed by the state parks in 3 area state parks. This year the parks are Moreau Lake, Grafton Lake and Schodack Island. We donned our grippers shortly after finding the first cache near the parking lot but we really didn't need them as our path followed the road counter clockwise around the lake. They were helpful when we turned onto the trails near the new playground and camping cabins that are being built. There were fishermen on the lake and we could hear the ice groaning, always a cool thing to experience in the winter. We found all the caches, which were placed to be found in the winter (hanging in hemlocks, attached to sticks in hollows of trees, etc). A nice outing and easy finds for our group of 6 ( Larry Eaton caught up with us near the beach for cache #11 and did the rest of the series with us.) Tuesday Outing Tue, Feb 7, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we hiked along a Lake George Land Conservancy property, the Terzian Woodlot, near Silver Bay on Lake George. The hardest part was finding the parking area...which access wasn't plowed, but we were able to pull in off the road and walk up the road to the parking lot. We didn't need snowshoes, but definitely needed microspikes. We'd been here before to go geocaching, but I'd never led a hike here. It's a nice easy hike along a stream in spots that leads to a great view of Lake George. You are on the west side looking over at Black Mountain and Huletts Landing. There's even a little bench to sit on as you enjoy the view! Great outing as usual! Participants: Mo Coutant, Carolyn Curren, Eric Krantz, Licia Mackey, and Rich Zuccaro.

Valentine Snowshoe to Heart Pond Sat, Feb 11, 2017, Reg Prouty
- Five of us had an enjoyable mid February winter day visiting these 3 ponds plus North Pond, which is actually part of Putnam Pond. We had to break trail most of the way but we took turns and Chrissie learned how to break trail. At Rock Pond we had lunch and visited the toppled boiler and cave. Returning via the trail just north of North Pond we found the herd path to Heart Pond and marked a waypoint there so it would be easier to find in the future. All in all it was a great day with some great people. Five hikers: Reg Prouty, Laura Fiske, Bob Before, Ray Boucher, and Chrissie Bombard.

Boreas Pond Ski Trip Sun, Feb 12, 2017, Steve Mackey
- I listened to the weather on the 6:00 news the night before and it sounded like it was going to snow all day starting fairly early. I hate canceling trips just because there is a little bad weather, but this one was justified. - I had a request to do a Fire Tower hike during school break week so Babette and Jill, who work for the school system and are working on the Fire Tower Challenge, could join us. They hadn't done Hurricane and even though we did it in the fall, I was up for doing it again as a snowshoe. Actually it was packed down and hard enough that snowshoes weren't necessary since we weren't sinking in at all. But most people wore them so they wouldn't have to carry them! We went up from the Crows parking lot (actually just below it where they stopped plowing) and up the north side. This trail wasn't too steep and fairly easy going on snowshoes. Pine Pond Trail Sat, Feb 25, 2017, Steve Mackey
- Unfortunately I had to cancel this trip. We got that really warm February weather and the snow conditions rapidly deteriorated. Also, the crossing of Oseetah Lake would have been dangerous. We skied the Jack Rabbit Trail the week before and conditions were excellent; it just shows how quickly conditions can change.

- This week we walked along the Kalabus-Perry Preserve trails east of Saratoga. We had a big group and luckily a few in the group had been there and served as our guides! There are a lot of intersecting trails to keep the mountain bikers busy and hikers coming back to explore. No bikers today as the main trail still had a layer of ice that made microspikes helpful. Always good to go to new areas and afterwards some of us went to the Saratoga Panera for a bite to eat. Thanks Joy for recommending the spot. Moreau Lake Overlook Sat, Mar 4, 2017, Reg Prouty
- We did not have an official ADK hike due to only 3 people available so three of us went to Lake Bonita instead as it has been added to the trail system at Moreau Lake. This may be rescheduled in the future.

Monthly Monday Geocache Mon, Mar 6, 2017, Sarah King and Mo Coutant
- Our destination for this outing was Grafton Lakes State Park. Our goal was to find 10 winter friendly caches placed by NYS Parks Saratoga-Capital Region staff. These caches are part of the Winter 33, 33 caches placed in three area state parks. It was a cold but bright day. We opted to bring our microspikes but didn't end up using them. All caches were placed along the Long Pond Trail, a 2.5 mile trail around Long Pond, which is the largest of the 6 ponds located at Grafton and where the beach is located. The water level was quite high and we skirted many large ice patches along the trail. It was fun to hear the ice groaning as we walked along. No ice fishermen were out as the ice was unsafe, according to signage, but we did see one fisherman in a small boat in open water. As we came to the far end of the lake, we looked for the beaver that other geocachers had photographed but he was nowhere to be found. We were happy to have Ralph Keating, a new cacher with a new GPS along. Although he had some technical issues with his GPS which we couldn't figure out, he was able to see some typical winter hides. After we completed the loop, we hopped in the car and headed to the Diamond Trail, a one mile long nature/ snowmobile trail that travels from Martin-Dunham Reservoir to Grafton State Park. We successfully found 3 more caches there. All in all, a great day with good company, great weather and homemade treats. Thanks to Ralph for the scones and Licia for the brownies. Tuesday Outing Tue, Mar 7, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we explored some of the trails in the Corinth Reservoir Recreation Area. It's just a short walk up a hill to the reservoir. From there we followed the green trail to the Red Beaver Pond trail. Along this trail there were rock outcroppings that would be good homes for porcupines and broken off hemlock branches, but we didn't see any. We did see an old and newer beaver lodge in the pond. We all enjoyed the walk in the woods to get there and back. With the leaves on the trail, we lost the trail a couple of times...but not for long! Nice area and we'll be back to do the other trails to the overlook. Thanks again to Joy for suggesting this spot! - Although it was a cold windy raw day atop the summit, the climb from the south was not bad as long as one knows to turn right before the collapsed first bridge. We reached the parking lot to meet the brutal wind. Thank God for my hooded gaiter. We had a quick lunch near the gear wheel and returned to our vehicles by mid afternoon. Four hardy hikers: Reg Prouty, Chris Lincoln, Nao Nozawa, and Tammy VanRyn.

- This week the blizzard kept us from going out on Tuesday. But it encouraged us to get to Cole's Woods in Glens Falls a couple of nights later for a chance for some great skiing under the lights. Skiing under the lights in Cole's Woods is such a rare treat during these winters of spotty snow, so it was great to get out and enjoy the trails. Allen: The Big Nasty in Winter Sat, Mar 18, 2017, Wayne Richter and Mike Fuller
- Every once in a while, Mother Nature takes your expectations for the day and puts them to shame. We had a spectacular day for the last winter weekend of the year. The giant March storm of the previous week gave us beautiful deep snow that covered up the nasty ice of the previous few weeks. We got a quick start in the double-digit below zero valley temperature and soon found ourselves in a rapidly warming day with deep blue skies and no wind. The new bridge over the Opalescent was a pleasure. At the gravel pit, we realized that we were in a giant snowflake that someone had tramped down in the snow. We had a bit of trouble finding our way through the hill beyond the gravel pit, but Mike soon had us back on the right path. Following lunch at the (frozen) falls at the base of Allen Brook, we began the real ascent, still under a cloudless sky. Trail breaking was not too bad as different groups traded the lead. The strong March sunshine and still air made it a pleasure to stand in the sun and take in the increasingly dramatic views as we rose. We all enjoyed the views from the summit, improved by the elevation from the snow. Those who have been up Allen in the winter know that it has one of the premier butt slides in the high peaks, and today did not disappoint. It was quite the experience, especially for a couple of first timers. Naturally enough, we finished after dark, tired but more than well rewarded. Tuesday Outing Tue, Mar 21, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we headed to Moreau State Park and hiked along the trails on the west side of the lake for an hour and a half. A week ago we had almost 2 ft of snow, but it has been melted and packed down enough to make it easy going in snowshoes and in some places could have used microspikes. We explored the area where porcupines hang out, but didn't see any. Eventually we headed to the warming hut for a hot dog roast and apple slices warmed in the fire. Perfect way to end a quick outing to the park! Pretty soon the warming hut will be closed for the busy summer season, so it was great to get one more use out of this wonderful building. - This week we hiked Cat Mtn from Edgecomb Pond on Thursday rather than Tuesday to take advantage of the best day of the week. We certainly had that with a beautiful blue sky and temps in the low 40s. We took the newish red trail up, which winds up and down on the mountain east of the older yellow trail. When we got to the turn-off some of us switched from microspikes to snowshoes since the red trail wasn't packed down. There wasn't a ton of snow and it was pretty hard packed, so those that stayed in microspikes said it was fine. This trail is a nice hike through the woods with plenty of ups and downs. You come out on the east side of the mountain with views of the lake. It was sunny and warm when we got to the top; we all enjoyed the views, something to eat, each other's company and taking photos. Then we made our way down on the yellow trail. I opened this trip up to allow dogs...so you'll see a couple in the photo gallery if you check out the pictures online. Great trip as always! Monday Monthly Geocache Mon, Apr 3, 2017, Sarah King and Mo Coutant
- This was the last leg of the SaraCap Winter Series geocaches. Schodack Island State Park was our destination with 10 winter friendly geocaches to be found. I love walking these trails and especially love the heated bathrooms at the main parking area, which seem to be open all winter. Trails were nice and dry and easy walking on these flat trails. The day was cool but warmed up nicely. We found all 10 caches here more quickly than we expected so we decided to head over to Papscanee Island Nature Preserve as there was a multi cache that I thought we could try. We parked at the northern lot, which is only open in the warmer months and headed in. This multi had 6 stages, each container giving the coordinates for the next stage. We battled some pretty thick prickers off trail but kept finding the caches and kept moving closer to the final cache. It got late so some of our crew headed home while three of us continued to the final stage. Dorean gets the gold star here for braving some standing water and thick prickers to find the ammo can at the end. Another great adventure for the ADK geocaching gals. Tuesday Outing Tue, Apr 4, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we headed up French Mountain from the Warren County bike trail. Doug joined us to find the spot where the trail leaves the bike path and then had to head out to do more responsible things. The rest of us continued on to the old Great Escape billboard which is on a side trail. We've hauled out over 20 bags of garbage from this area in the past. We were glad to see that it has remained cleaned over the past couple of years. Then it was a steady uphill to the ledge overlooking Route 9 with a view to the mountains in the west and a small view of the southern end of Lake George. This was a new trip for some in the group. Last of the snowpack hike Sat, Apr 8, 2017, Mike Fuller and Eric Kimmelman
- If there's just one winter hike to take a group, it's Avalanche Pass. We had a beautiful spring day with an overcast sky. Great trail conditions made easy time to the Pass. We had good ice to cross the lake and stand between Colden and Avalanche Mountain. There was still 4 to 5 feet of snow on the calf-burner trail heading up to Algonquin. The summit was clouded in but still had good conditions. The skies finally broke when we reached the base of Wright with an easy hike out. It was one of those day that you did not want to end. - This week we hiked around the Saratoga Battlefield. It was very muddy and the horses didn't do the trail any favors by making deep holes that collected water. But we had a nice walk along the Wilkinson Trail and stopped at each interpretive marker to learn about the trail. We all learned something either from the brochure ... or from each other! i.e., where to get National Park passes and where you don't need them. Hadley Mtn. Neal Andrews Memorial Hike Sat, Apr 15, 2017, Reg Prouty
- It was a beautiful day for the memorial hike. We made fast work of Hadley, pausing occasionally to observe the trout lilies or to view a soaring hawk. After having lunch near the tower with some of us climbing it, Reg discovered that he must have lost the mouthpiece to his pocket trumpet recently on Cat Mountain. So several of us whistled "Amazing Grace" instead to honor the memory of Neal Andrews and Grace Hudowalski. Then we headed due north to a flat section with a large open bedrock area on a plateau on the northern shoulder of Hadley and spent some time viewing and taking pictures of some animal art made of carefully assembled various sized stones. - This week we hiked Black Mtn as the month's Fire Tower Challenge hike. The plan was to hike to the top and then return along the pond loop to get back, but we had the good fortune to have a flexible group. As it turns out, when we got to the trailhead, Neal V was there without a car. Odd, but then he told us he'd driven his boat over to Huletts and got a ride up to the trailhead. As we hiked up he had the thought that he and a couple of others could return the way we were going up and take the cars down to the boat and pick the rest of us up at Black Mtn Point. I'd never gone down this way and everyone else was up for it. While we headed down the fairly steep lake side trail ... I began to wonder if I'd missed the turn when we were almost at the ponds. I thought the junction was further up! I almost turned us all around ... but luckily I didn't and we got to the junction and headed down to the lake. (I'd forgotten my map at home ... and was missing it!) We were only down at the water for about 10-15 minutes before Neal and the others came by and got us. Neal did a great job maneuvering the boat while we got in without a dock! Thanks again Neal for adding an unexpected boat ride to our hike! Fairy Ladder Falls Sat, Apr 22, 2017, Nick Ringelberg and Jayne Bouder
- Four stalwart hikers are now charter members of the newly formed FLF Club. On a cloudy day, 40s, we took the Ausable Club road 2.5 miles to the shorter route to the Colvin Trail, bypassing the numerous distracting waterfalls on the Gill Brook Trail in favor of focusing on our primary objective, the elusive Fairy Ladder Falls. Having donned our snowshoes at about 2500 feet elevation, we took the left turn at the Elk Pass intersection and after about 100 yards when the trail turned right at about 3100 feet, we turned left, bushwhacked into 2 feet of slushy snow over blowdowns, bypassing cliffs, and descended to Gill Brook. Following upstream and taking the left fork, in about 100 yards we found it splashing in its glory, at 3111 feet, the highest major waterfall in the Adirondacks. Retracing our steps to the fork, we returned to the Colvin Trail by following the contour NNW, a much easier bushwhack out. - This week, we postponed by a couple of days to get better weather and were glad we did. For some, it was the first time to the Sleeping Beauty area on the shore of Lake George, which is really beautiful. It's nice to be here off season before the crowds trash the parking lot and unfortunately along the trails as well. We picked up what garbage we found and only had a few small bags. We also ran into a DEC forest ranger who said they were going to try to enforce parking only in the lots ... not along the road, to try to cut down on the overuse issues in the area this summer. Maybe I'll get back this summer and see how that is working out?! Tuesday Outing Tue, May 2, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we walked along the Feeder Canal from Murray Park in Hudson Falls over to Fort Edward. I wasn't aware of the construction right at the beginning, but they had a temporary bridge set up for walkers over the canal and we were easily able to navigate around the Route 4 work. We stopped and read the historical markers along the way and the water was flowing fast through the 5 Combines area. Along the backwater area we saw a few turtles, but we also saw a couple of muskrats swimming. We weren't sure if they were beavers ... but I think we settled on muskrats. Jim joined us walking his bike before heading off to work on it at the end of the trail in Fort Edward. ADK Spring Work Day Sat, May 6, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- The rain held off until we were inside eating pizza and even then it was a short lived sprinkle. So we got the yard cleaned up, the parking timbers, picnic table and bench back in place, the windows cleaned, screens up, bugs cleaned out of overhead lights ... and even some painting done inside! South Bay and Diameter Cliff Sat, May 6, 2017, Jayne Bouder
- Rain was forecast. Four of us met at Panera's, the sun came out, South Bay was high, and the waterfalls pouring. We paddled to Devils Den, then Diameter Cliff - chilling in ice cave cold air while Ben and Nikki climbed fern and lichen topped boulders to touch the cliff wall. Then over logs, beaver dams, and through red trillium to the Greenland Pond outlet waterfall. Sunday we hiked to the bottom and top of the Waterwall en route to North Saddle. Had great views! We enjoyed a LOT more paddling and climbing than advertised. "Thank-you" Tim and Mary for hosting us, and for ferrying our gear. Spring Bird Walk - Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park Sat, May 6, 2017, Rich Speidel
- We had good luck with the weather, as the rain stopped just before our field trip. Fortunately, the morning stayed rain-free with no wind, so we enjoyed the birds at a leisurely pace. Near the pond, we heard the sweet song of the Baltimore oriole with its orange and black plumage. We then had a rare up-close look at a pair of pine warblers. Birds seen in or above the woods included yellow-bellied sapsucker, broad-winged hawk, and sharp-shinned hawk. Monday Monthly Geocache Mon, May 8, 2017, Sarah King and Mo Coutant
- Our destination was the Corinth Reservoir Recreation Area. It felt more like a March day than a May one, temps being in the mid 40s. The forecast was for 20% chance of rain but we stayed dry. Trails were very muddy, with lots of water running down the center of many. From the parking lot, we started up the Reservoir Road trail, next taking Hickok Brook Trail to the Wilson Pass, where our geocaching adventure started. Good coordinates and hints made these pretty quick finds. We started to climb on the last half mile, which was the Redmond Overlook Trail and boasted a beautiful view and our last geocache. We sat on the rocks at the overlook enjoying the view and some Licia goodies and other snacks and headed down. From the Redmond Pass Trail, we took the Reservoir Road trail straight back to parking. We decided that even though it was quite a raw day, it had it benefits: No humidity or bugs. A good day out with nice folks. Tuesday Outing - Paddle Tue, May 9, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- It was chilly with possible showers, plus the water was high due to persistent showers in the previous week, so I postponed this paddle. But instead we went up to Crown Point to the Birding Station and got to learn about the station (continuously manned by volunteers for 42 year) and got to release 8 yellow-rumped warblers that were caught while we were there. Then off for a walk where we saw wild asparagus, a lime kiln, amazing columbine in bloom, an eagle soaring overhead, an osprey and finally found a geocache at the high point of the bridge between NY and VT. Full Moon Neal Andrews Memorial Hike Wed, May 10, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- We think Neal was looking down on us, since the sun came out on the cloudy day as we met in the parking lot. We shared Neal stories then and on the summit before a gust of wind scattered a tiny bit of his ashes. We brought them to the northern overlook and Dan realized we were looking towards Tongue Mountain where the lean-to that Neal had taken care of for many years stood. So it was an even more appropriate spot than we were originally thinking. We got to the top just after the sun had sunk below the mountains to the west, but the sky was amazing. The clouds had opened up a bit just above the mountains to give us this wonderful effect, but unfortunately closed up again to the east and covered the moon. So although we didn't have the moonlight to guide us down, we had the light from our headlamps and it was a quite a sight. Kathi had the best eyes as she spotted a mouse and a spider with a huge egg sack. There were lots of tricky water crossings, but everyone helped spot the best route ... or we learned from others' mistakes! Thanks to everyone for coming on this hike in memory of Neal. He was a great ADK member, hike leader, volunteer, and person. We did get wet on the descent but the rain was very light and the temperature was warm enough that we didn't mind the rain. Tuesday Outing - FTC Tue, May 16, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This month our Fire Tower Challenge hike was up Hadley Mountain. I always try to do this hike in May to see the amazing variety of wildflowers and this year did not disappoint. The show stealer this year was the trout lily. We're all used to seeing its mottled leaf, but rarely see the flower. This year the forest floor was carpeted with them in many spots. Many of us couldn't remember seeing so many in bloom! Plus Dutchman's britches, trillium, jack in the pulpit, Solomon's seal, and false Solomon's seal, twisted rosey something and something toothwort (Ok ... we knew them at the time!), plus many more. Always fun to use the group knowledge to identify them. Kathi, our Fire Tower Challenge Correspondent, was with us and she gave info to many of the other young hikers we saw climbing Hadley that day. The black flies were coming out by the time we got to the top, but the breeze up there and on the fire tower steps helped keep them away. Some of us headed to the north side of the mountain and found that the "rock garden" had survived the winter intact. Birding with Friends of the IBA Wed, May 17, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This was a late addition to the midweek outings list. Laurie LaFond, ADK member and president of the Friends of the IBA, invited our group to join one of their group trips to property just outside of Greenwich to go birding. The varied terrain and peaceful setting makes for a great walk and opportunity to see many types of birds during this time of year when birds are returning or passing by. Everyone in the group (other than myself) was knowledgeable and some were amazing! They were identifying birds I couldn't see and barely heard! At the end they'd identified over 50 different birds. I saw the Scarlett tanager, a phoebe, and many others. I didn't see the indigo bunting that others saw, but I did see many "small black bird moving left across the sky" or "medium blackish bird moving right" ... and Laurie and others were able to put actual names to these shadows! Hackensack Mountain Loop Fri, May 19, 2017, Rich Crammond
- What a great day to be on the trail, except for the bugs and the real strong wind on the summit. Seeing moose tracks and hiking with people like the bird man, Rich Speidel, Jayne Bouder, my old bushwhacker buddy, and Peter and Jim made this outing more enjoyable. Also, looking at the old motor and tow cable wheel at the ski area, all woods now, was a real plus. Overall, a nice outing with some nice folks to be out there with. The Jay Range Razzle (The JP & Joe show) Sat, May 20, 2017, JP Martin and Joe Babcock - What a Great day was had at the Jay Range! Joe, Dave, Mark, Jayne, Barb and I started out on the trail with cool temps in the 40s and bright skies. We signed in at 7:15 at the register and the trail up the first two miles was mostly switchbacks dotted with flowers yet to open for the day. We stopped twice to do some trail work where fallen trees had displaced the trail and we were able to clear the original trail to restore the path. There was a section of blowdown where we knew we were out gunned and needed several helpers with chainsaws to restore several switchbacks. We reached the overlook and had a snack, taking an opportunity to take some great pictures before heading up to the bare rock slabs covering the majority of the range. The temperatures warmed to the 60s and the traverse was excellent with open views and wonderful rock formations to climb. We made the 4 miles to the summit with the help of Jayne as the final 1/4 mile evaded Barb and I who had hiked on ahead of the rest. We had lunch and took our pictures at the summit before heading back across the open rock face to the outlook. We had the flies come out by the time we hit the outlook and staying in the wind helped to keep them at bay. Unlike the trip out, the trip back was very populated with multiple groups of French and Russian speaking groups (many with dogs). We admired our work on the way out as well as the now opened flowers. We signed out 6 hours and 53 minutes later after completing 7.87 miles and 3260 feet of elevation. Statistics provided via Runkeeper. Good people on a nice Saturday hike.

Tuesday Outing - Paddle Tue, May 23, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we did the annual "adventure" paddle from Lake Luzerne to Second Lake. We had a few more beaver dams to cross and a longer portage around obstacles due to a few pines across the steam. Mary broke out her collapsible saw and removed a branch on one fallen tree which allowed us to remain in our boats and do a kayak-limbo to go under the tree. We made it to Second Lake and enjoyed our lunch while floating around and sharing sweets. Always a fun trip! OK Slip Falls, caves and Blue Ledge Overlook Sat, May 27, 2017, Nick Ringelberg
- Beautiful, slightly overcast day, high in the 60s after a couple days of rain, so the OK Slip Falls was flowing nicely. We successfully found the three caves, but the entrance to Carter's Landing Cave seemed to be silted closed, so we descended to the Hudson River to watch the crazy rafters paddling by. After a little wandering around through the woods, we managed to find and enter the Blue Ledge Cave to examine the sparkly rocks. Then we inducted four new members to the Blue Ledge Overlook Club! On the way back to the trailhead, we examined the entrances at the 3rd cave at Carters Ponds, but declined to enter what appeared to be a wet crawl. Midway on the 5 mile exit march, we had a delightful rest on a swimming shelf rock at Ross Pond, amid scholarly discussion of the life cycle of the newts we saw swimming there, led by our resident biologist, Scott. After our 10 hour hike, we welcomed the sight of the parking lot. Scott Anderson, Jayne Bouder, Ben Legg, Patricia Lockwood, Nick Ringelberg, David White. Spring Bird Walk - Pack Forest, Warrensburg Sat, May 27, 2017, Rich Speidel - We were blessed with good weather and an excellent start to the field trip. In the parking area, we had a spectacular view of the Blackburnian warbler; a singing male in brilliant orange and black breeding plumage. To see this elusive bird in the sunlight for an extended period was a memorable sight. Our luck continued moments later with good looks at a white-throated sparrow, then a black-throated green warbler. We saw a variety of colorful songbirds throughout the morning, including purple finch, common yellowthroat (warbler), blue-headed and red-eyed vireos, and yellow-rumped warbler. Mount Marcy Madness (The JP & Joe show) Sat, Jun 3, 2017, JP Martin and Joe Babcock
- Cancelled as per DEC requests to keep off the trails 2500' and higher. Any interests in hiking Marcy can be redirected to the Grey, Skylight up and over the backside of Marcy hike we are offering on July 1st. Thanks. As an alternative, three of us set out on Little Crow, Big Crow and Nun-da-ga-o Ridge, also know as the Soda Range. The hike includes hiking up from Hurricane Road via the Red trail until the Blue trail to Little Crow splits off. Incredible views can be had along the way to Little Crow, where the three of us helped to re-build the fallen summit cairn. We continued to the col between Little Crow and Big Crow, performing trail maintenance along the way. Big Crow offered great views towards the Lower Range, Whiteface, Cascade, Porter and Pitchoff Mountains. We traveled down the front of Big Crow to the exit for Nun-da-ga-o Ridge. The ridge is a series of up and down hiking with many openings in the trees for the sights and buffets of cool wind. Eventually the traverse reaches Weston Mountain before sloping down the ridge of the mountain to Lost Pond and the two nicely renovated lean-tos. By and by, the team of 3 had cut and removed 14 trees during the course of our traverse - some as large as 15 inches across. A very nice day in the woods. - We had a couple new people join me on this beautiful blue bird day. The summit was a cool wind and there were about 15 people atop when we arrived. Always a great hike! I will be doing this one again for sure.

Spring Bird Hike & Climb - Pack Forest, Warrensburg Sat, Jun 3, 2017, Rich Speidel
- It was sunny when we started in the parking area, which gave us good lighting to see a bluebird. The weather soon turned mostly cloudy, and a gusty northwest wind persisted throughout the day. The strong wind limited the bird activity, and made it more difficult to hear and see them. A variety of songbirds were heard nearby or up in the trees, but most stayed just out of sight. However, we had some partial views and enjoyed a clear vista from the overlook on Ben Wood Mountain. A big snapping turtle on a stump in Pack Forest Lake capped our day-long field trip, with 33 species of birds heard or seen. 7 participants: Jim Brown, Keri Coco, Heidi Kaufmann, Licia Mackey, Lori McCarron, Linda White, Rich Speidel.

Monday Monthly Geocache Wed, Jun 7, 2017, Sarah King and Mo Coutant
- We had a perfect day to walk the trails at Peebles Island. There were 9 geocaches to be found and we found them all, although one was particularly difficult. It involved a fake rock, but Steve spotted it. We were treated to several wildlife sightings, several deer, two eagles and a nest located on Goat Island across from Peebles, a blue heron, and lots of dogs walking their owners. The weather was perfect with a slight breeze. The trail was wet in a few spots but easy walking for the majority of it. We had homemade treats from both Licia AND Dorean. Thanks guys. We made a quick stop at Knickerbacker Park in Lansingburgh to look for 3 more caches. One was near a monument to the Troy Haymakers, a cool memorial to baseball history in Troy. Tuesday Outing - Paddle Thu, Jun 8, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we paddled out to Speaker Heck Island to check out the eagles nest and see if anyone was home. Unfortunately, we didn't see any eagles. But the water was calm and it was a beautiful day, so the eagles would really just have been icing on a very nice cake. Afterward, we returned to Eric's house and ate lunch overlooking the lake. Mt. Adams Fire Tower Sat, Jun 10, 2017, Rich Crammond
- This was just a great day to be on an Adirondack trail. Low bugs, many wild flowers, and good hiking weather. The views from the tower cab of the high peaks were outstanding, also. Tuesday Outing - FTC Wed, Jun 14, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- We hiked up Vanderwhacker Mountain this month as our Fire Tower Challenge hike. I couldn't remember if I'd done it or not, but once I was there I realized I wouldn't have forgotten that excellent view of the high peaks. The drive in along the dirt road wasn't too bad, but a few spots would be difficult with low clearance. The hike was pretty easy for the first half and then gets steeper once you get to the fire tower observers cabin. But it wasn't too steep or too long. Annual Sewards Black Fly Blood Drive Sat, Jun 17, 2017, Wayne Richter and Mike Fuller
- It was a fine June day for the Sewards and, after something of a slow start, the black flies did not disappoint. We headed up the Calkins Brook herd path, stopped to enjoy the views at Donaldson, and headed over to Emmons. For a change, we could eat lunch there without too much "company" from the black flies. We returned along the ridge, then dropped way down before making the ascent to Seward. As always the rock "staircase" on the way up, with its views to the north and east, was a highlight of the day. We spent some time on the lookout just before the summit, reached the top, and headed back to Calkins Brook. As we started down from the ridge, a bunch of white specks flew over to us. It was another generation of black fly elders. We heard them say. "Our grandparents told us about you when we were just larvae, but we thought it was only a myth. Thank you for helping to feed the next generation." And, of course, we'll be back. Crehore Garnet Mine and OK Slip Falls Sat, Jun 17, 2017, Nick Ringelberg
- 5 of us explored the old Crehore Mine, the only underground garnet mine in the Adirondacks. Then we got our feet wet slogging up the 90 foot tunnel that was used for hauling garnet ore in mining carts to the refinery, now only a foundation to show its location. The full carts, partially covered with rubble, are still there at the end of the tunnel, almost 100 years after the mine was closed. From there we bushwhacked the back route to the OK Slip Falls, which was running at full volume due to the large amounts of rain recently. Tuesday Outing - Paddle Tue, Jun 20, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- We revisited the Hudson, Battenkill, and Fish Creek for Mo's kayak outing. We were happy Ernie, Susan, and Trishia joined us ol' enthusiasts. As no attendant was manning the lock, we launched directly on the Hudson, from Hudson Crossing Park. We were whisked to the mouth of the Battenkill by a hefty current due to our recent rains. Fighting our way up the Battenkill was a challenge, but worth the fun of playing in the eddys and rapids. Joy and Mark chatted about the upper Battenkill sections we should explore. We're all in. Steve flushed out a few Mergansers but the resident Eagle was a no-show. We had an easy float back to the Hudson, around the island and up Fish Creek. Ernie spotted a turtle sunning on a log. Great Blue Herons were busy fishing. Wow, was the falls roaring. Joy got a little wet playing below it. Returning to and heading up the Hudson past our launch, we skirted the east shore of Hudson Crossing Park. Upon our return, some lingered to enjoy a picnic supper at the park. Highway to the Sky - Wolf Jaws via Bennies Brook Slide Sat, Jun 24, 2017, Wayne Richter and Akane Suzuki
- We had a glorious day for a fun trip up the slide. Following a delay that worked out well because it allowed the rain to end and the slide to dry, we had an enjoyable walk up the road from Keane Valley, the Garden lot having filled before our arrival. Although we had hoped to cross Johns Brook and take the Southside Trail to the slide, heavy rain in the preceding days ruled that possibility out without even trying. Instead, we took the safe route over the suspension bridge near the interior outpost and got a view of the roaring stream from above. By the time we reached the Bennies Brook slide, the sun was out and we had enough dry rock for a safe passage up the slide. Where it was wet, the rock tended to be slick, so we took it slowly and carefully. This was no problem because the views got better and better as we got higher, encouraging us to stop, linger and look around. We also saw some interesting plunges and pools as the water made its way down the slide. We had lunch near the top of the slide, took the short herd path to the W. A. White Trail, and soon found ourselves on top of Lower Wolf Jaw. It was then down to the Notch and up to Upper Wolf Jaw. After some quality time on the summit, we descended back to the Notch and returned by the trail that runs along Wolfjaw Brook. We had no shortage of mud for the day! Thanks to Akane for co-leading. Chestertown Challenge Pick Two Sat, Jun 24, 2017, Reg Prouty
- We picked three of the Chesterton Challenge hikes instead of two. We did Kipp first, which has the best views of Loon Lake. We followed with Stewart, which is short but has good views of part of Loon Lake, then the Caroline Fish Trails, which come out in the Dynamite Hill Ski Center on the south end. All these trails are well maintained and well marked so are easy to follow. A good day was had by all 8 participants and a few stayed longer to do some geo-caching. Santanoni, Couch, and Panther Sat, Jul 8, 2017, Mike Fuller
- With rain in the forecast, I had a few cancel, but the only rain that showed up was at the parking lot and at Couch. We did a reverse from last year, because of last year's flash flood that turned the ankle deep crossing to a waist deep, and did Santanoni first. Even with muddy conditions and limited views, all the hikers we met were still smiling. We did finally see the sun at Panther where we did our muddy boot shot at the benchmark. The sun stayed with us on our way back. Congrats to Ann and Tony on adding these three peaks to their 46 quest. Hanging Spear Falls Sat, Jul 8, 2017, Nick Ringelberg
- Thunderstorm and torrential rain warnings coupled with high water and the high water bridge out on Calamity Brook forced a change to the Allen Mountain trail to the Flowed Lands. Only three die hard souls tramped up the muddy trail through the rain to view a nicely flowing Hanging Spear Falls. Three-fourths of the way there, Steve became distracted with trail maintenance, so he dropped back to work on trail improvement (desperately needed water bars!). Tuesday Outing - Paddle Tue, Jul 11, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we paddled into the very beginning of Northwest Bay on Lake George. Just after entering the main bay, we headed to shore and found the trail that takes you out to Montcalm Point. We only walked for a little while, but it was nice to stretch our legs and backs! Then we headed back and ate lunch and cooled off in the lake. The water felt great. On the way into the bay we saw a loon in the channel and on the way out we saw one on a nest which we decided was one of the highlights of the trip. We finished the day with a trip to the Stewarts in Bolton to work on our "Ice Cream Challenge" - trying all the seasonal flavors after an ADK outing. - Sun dissipated early morning overcast, and our favorite camp spot was open. We bantered lively around the camp fire a good bit of the time. Late Saturday night 2 participants qualified for my GOOF list. This was Mary Boucher's first canoe/camp trip. Sunday was beautiful. Tuesday Outing - FTC Tue, Jul 18, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- We've done all the Fire Towers close to home, so we now have to travel a bit to get some new ones! We saved these (Stillwater & Bald) to do now so we could wind up at Kathi's camp on Fourth Lake afterwards and cool off. Stillwater Fire Tower is on a dirt road after coming out of Eagle Bay...the first part is paved. They were actually working on the road making it wider, but it was in good shape and didn't slow us down like I was expecting. The hike was very easy and short. It's a tall tower with a great view and stickers for those who get there. Very friendly. Then we were off to Bald Mountain. This trail is also pretty short and very accessible...so that equals packed with people. All kinds...of preparedness for hiking! I saw one person in slip-on sandals and understood why there are almost weekly DEC incident reports about helping people with lower leg injuries on this mountain. It does have some tricky spots to navigate in sandals. The view was very nice and Kathi was able to identify all the lakes for us. Then we followed our GPSs to a geocache that brought us to the balancing rock near the summit. After the hikes, those of us who didn't have to get home for other activities headed over to Kathi's camp and relaxed on the dock and cooled off in the lake. What a great day out! Tuesday Outing - Paddle Tue, Jul 25, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we paddled along the Spier Falls section of the Hudson River. It was a perfect night with the temps cooling off to the low 70s, water like glass, and enough clouds to keep the sun out of our eyes. We were treated to a fish jumping out of the water as we were gathering around after launching our boats. It was so close I think I might have screamed since it startled me! Later a beaver slapped his tail and dove under, but some of us saw him again later. We were lucky to have Laurie Williams along since she is always full of info about the area. She pointed out the tupelo trees, the spot where one of the bays connects back to the river, where to look out for rocks, and many other points of interest. I was also thrilled to have Charlotte on the trip while she is visiting the area after moving away a couple of years ago! Great to catch up and remember prior adventures! - This was - without exaggeration - one of the finest days I've experienced in the Adirondacks. Even the colors, from the different greens of the trees to the alpine grasses and sedges rippling in the breezes, seemed particularly vibrant. Whether this was because all the rain has made the vegetation lush, the air was unusually clear for summer, or we were just so enthralled by the day is hard to say, but it was undeniable. A few days of, what for this summer has been anomalously rain-free weather, even gave us gratifyingly little mud on the trails. Our first peak of the day was Wright, where we met and chatted with old (and for some of us, new) friends, summit stewards Alison Lauren and Jon Lauren. The next stop was Algonquin where we had lunch and steward Troy showed us some interesting plants. Iroquois completed the trio, and we even had some summit time with just the six of us. We went back over Algonquin, not lingering too long this time because the day was advancing. We returned before dark, even with many enjoyable hours on the summits. Thanks to Brian for co-leading. - We met Tim & Mary early Saturday for a Great Camp Sagamore paddle and hike. We then braved strong afternoon wind on Raquette Lake on the way to Tioga Point. Ray's favorite hat blew off and sank near the Boys Camp. Scott was waiting at Eldon Lake, waving us over to an esker campsite he and T&M had discovered there. Beautiful! Sat around the campfire, with moon, till late. Left for St William's chicken barbecue mid-morning, with sun and light winds. Our friends Nate and Nancy were already there, and we visited Pine Knot (Great Camp) after chicken dinner. Great get together! - "I go rain or shine" has been my motto, and everyone was glad I didn't cancel. We left the parking lot with a light rain, which ended around 10:30. Thanks to the trail crews for the great bridge over the Opalescent, which made an easy crossing. At Skylight Brook we were beginning to see our shadows; great, the sun's on its way! Yes, the Red Slime was still there to greet us and some of us took the greeting. The summit yielded great views, photos, and lunch. - This week we paddled up the Hudson River from the launch at the beginning of the Harry Betar walkway to the dam at the beginning of the Feeder Canal trail. It was a beautiful evening with water as smooth as glass. We didn't see much out of the ordinary, but a bunch of Canada geese did take off and almost knocked some us over! Afterwards, some of us stayed and listened to the concert going on at the South Glens Falls gazebo for a little while! Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge Sat, Aug 12, 2017, Wayne Richter
- After what might have been the muddiest hike of my life in the Santanonis three days previously and with a good chance of rain predicted, I was prepared for, if not the worst, at least something of a slog. Instead, we got the driest trails I'd seen in a while (go figure) and rather nice weather. We had pleasant temperatures, perhaps more sun than clouds, and fascinating patterns to watch from the summits as the low clouds moved in and out. We started up the Roaring Brook Trail, took a quick diversion to the top of the falls, and continued to the junction with the trail to Rocky Peak Ridge where we stopped for a break and met an interesting young fellow named Alex. We decided to head first to Rocky Peak Ridge where we spent a nice half hour chatting, soaking up bits of sun, and watching the clouds. We diverted on the way back to Giant to spend some time on the slide, then headed up to the top. Giant's summit was very windy but it had warmed up enough so that we could sit comfortably with a bit of extra clothing from the packs. After some quality summit time, we headed down on the Ridge Trail. We took our time on the open outlooks, enjoying the changing scenery. On our arrival at Route 73, we retrieved the car we spotted down the hill, and headed back not five minutes before driving into a short, intense shower. A stop at Marthas in Queensbury for ice cream completed a fine day. Participants: Jen Ferris, John Hallock, Kimberly Labrecque, Wayne Richter, Dave White.

Tenant Creek Falls Sat, Aug 12, 2017, Nick Ringelberg
- Our small group of four had most of the three waterfalls to ourselves on a delightful, sunny (if slightly cool for August) day. We started from the new parking area, about 0.4 of a mile before the old trailhead. In about a mile on the new trail, we reached the first of three falls. About 50 feet tall, the pool below it looked inviting, but it was a little chilly for swimming. The next two falls were reached by following an easy herd path through another mile of idyllic hardwood forest, often gazing down from a lofty cliff overlooking the Tenant Creek gorge. The return hike was along an old logging road that paralleled the creek, through bushes that yielded up a few blackberries, followed by a short bushwhack that brought us back near the first falls. After a quick lunch, we returned to the parking lot. Participants Linda Ranado, Nick Ringelberg, Magdaline Zink, and Nancy Zinc.

Tuesday Outing - FTC Tue, Aug 15, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This month my Fire Tower Challenge hike was our first one to the Catskills. We wound up doing Tremper Mountain. It's a little over 6 miles and described accurately as steady. We had a small group and took it slow, since it was a bit hot and humid. Along the way and up on top, we found the geocaches that are hidden. This is the second part of the challenge for Sarah who as well as doing the Fire Tower Challenge, is also finding the caches that are usually on the top or along the trail. Afterwards, we stopped in Woodstock for an ice cream and then walked along the main street checking out the town. Great time. Participants: Sue Atwell, Mo Coutant, Sarah King, Licia Mackey.

- This was just a great day to be on the trail. Hiking with some nice people like Linda Ranado, Education Chair, was very enjoyable. We saw many red efts along the trail, the old mine area, two real neat ponds, moose tracks, and bear scat in the path. It didn't get no better than that. Boreas Ponds Bike Ride Sat, Aug 26, 2017, Nick Ringelberg
- It was a perfect sunny day for a bike ride on a nicely hard packed dirt road. Reaching the bridge overlooking the first Boreas Pond within an hour, there was a clear view looking toward Allen Mountain in the distance. We explored the area, with loons and otters sighted and moose tracks, but no moose sightings, and returned after a pleasant day, only slightly discouraged from finding no blackberries. Very easy bike ride over slightly rolling terrain. Would you believe down hill, both ways? Participants: Jayne Bouder, Nick Ringelberg, Jim Swart.

- 8-27-17. With a delightful group of 6, we left the red markers and set out on a half mile bushwack (meander/thrash) to Erebus summit. There we gratefully found a sign (a really nice one), and Erebus's overgrown, blowdown guarded ledge. We enjoyed the sun and view for quite a while... - This week we paddled from Nolan Road in South Glens Falls down the Hudson to the Feeder Canal dam and then back. We had another perfectly calm night with the river like glass. Julie joined us on her stand-up paddleboard and let anyone who wanted a chance to give it a try. Laurie and I took her up on her offer and didn't fall in. The water seemed a bit high so some in the group explored the backwater area near the dam and caught up with the rest of us after they realized we didn't follow them in! Pharaoh Lake Via Mill Brook Sat, Sep 2, 2017, Reg Prouty
- This was a beautiful day for an easy walk to Pharaoh Lake. It's a good thing that DEC has built a new bridge over Mill Brook as the water is now as deep as 4 feet due to the wet summer and additional beaver activity under and attached to the new bridge. Even Riley, Neal's new puppy, enjoyed Reg's trumpet tribute to Grace Hudowalski. We had a relaxing lunch at lean-to #1. Cliff and Redfield Sun, Sep 3, 2017, Wayne Richter
- With rain from the remnants of Hurricane Harvey forecast to make the scheduled day of the hike wet and cold, and discouraging all from wanting to hike, we moved it up a day from Sunday to Saturday. Sadly, several of those signed up were unable to make the change, so we had a small group for a gorgeous day. It started out cold, with a solid frost, but brilliant sunshine in a cloudless sky, together with a brisk pace, soon had us warm enough. We took a break in the sunshine at Flowed Lands, continued to cross the Lake Colden Dam, and headed up the Opalescent with its falls and flumes. Of course we had to stop often for photos and just to admire. We made it across the mud wallow on the way to Cliff and climbed up the rocks to the summit where we basked in the sun for lunch. Back down we went with fine views of Skylight, Marcy, Colden and Alqonquin, then headed up Redfield along Uphill Brook with more wonderful views of the peaks. We had another enjoyable summit visit with the Dix Range in sharp outline before the waning afternoon sent us on our way. We had a final pause for a snack on the rocks of the Opalescent just before the suspension bridge. A final look at Flowed Lands was irresistible. The mountains were bathed in a golden light from the setting sun with touches of fall color just beginning to appear. Our headlamps came on as we neared the Calamity Brook crossing, and we finished by the light of a nearly full moon. Participants: Jen Ferris, Kimberly Labrecque, Wayne Richter.

- #47: A cloudy, wet day. Rains had McNaughton brook too full to hike, so gamely into the thick, soaking woods we went - sometimes on a slight trail, keeping the brook within earshot. Higher up, in thick hemlock growing through old blowdown, the brook disappeared, and with no sign of the herdpath, Nick took us straight to the summit. Wet, happy hikers! We hung around on top for lunch. Then more of the same coming down, and we found the marked trail to our relief. Great trip! Great group! 13 miles, 3200 feet, 11 1/2 hours. Monthly Monday Geocache Mon, Sep 11, 2017, Sarah King and Mo Countant
- We had some beautiful weather for our trip down to Thacher Park and Thompson Lake. We started out at the north end of Thacher, parking at the Carrick Road parking. It's so cool the way nature has created a natural parking lot here. We encountered some very creative hides here finding 8 of the 9 caches placed here. It was Todd's first time at Thacher and we had fun pointing out all the cracks and fissures in the limestone in this area. Now off to Thompson Lake to look for the 9 caches here. Again, some very creative hides here that will be around through Veteran's Day if anyone would like to find them. One in particular, called Stomp, had us laughing as Todd used his foot power to shoot the cache out for us to sign. We also spied some closed bottle gentian, dolls eyes and asters as we walked along the trails at Thompson Lake. As always, a fun day out with friends and some great geocaches. Tuesday Outing - Paddle Tue, Sep 12, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- I know I've heard a lot of complaints about this summer's weather, but I had great weather for the Tuesday outings. This week was no different. We headed up to Brant Lake for a daytime paddle and had picture perfect weather with a light fog rising off the water in the distance and mirror-like water. We did have one snag, which shouldn't have been had I been more responsible. When we got to the boat launch, there was a boat inspector who was there to protect the lake from invasives. If you'd had your boat elsewhere within the past 2 weeks and it wasn't properly washed...you had to go to a power washing station that wasn't all that nearby. I used to put that reminder in my emails to the group, but this year...that's dropped off my standard message and one of the people in our group paid the price. We always want to be good stewards to the waters and lands of the Adirondacks and elsewhere, so please keep this in mind when you are bringing your boats to different lakes. It was a wonderful day and paddle, ending with a lunch at the outdoor picnic tables at the Crossroads County Store on this beautiful day. Ellen and Abraham - Vermont 4000 footers Sat, Sep 16, 2017, Eric Kimmelman and Akane Suzuki
- Thanks to 9 hardy hikers, especially my co-leader Akane, for making my first lead for the Glens Falls chapter of the ADK a success. We hiked two of Vermont's highest and finest peaks, Ellen and Abraham. Along the way, we faced unseasonably hot and humid conditions but enjoyed some of Vermont's finest views. We also rescued Dave from a plane that crashed over 40 years ago. - We actually counted five summits to Pharaoh if you want a 360 degree view in all directions and saving the original spot where the fire tower used to be for last. Tuesday Outing - FTC Tue, Sep 19, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This month the Fire Tower Challenge hike was up Pillsbury Mountain. My husband says we'd done it and has pictures, but it was at least 20 years ago and I can't really say I remembered it. The drive in includes a section along dirt roads with the last section getting a little rougher but manageable by most cars with careful driving. The road closes November-May, so we wanted to do this one while we could drive in. It was a really nice hike and although we couldn't get into the fire tower cab, we climbed up the stairs to get a nice view. We once again had great weather. We ate and chatted at the bottom of the fire tower, lying on the bedrock, and didn't want to leave. I love hikes and weather like that. Marshall Peak and plane crash site Sat, Sep 23, 2017, Mike Fuller
- A couple of years ago I started a new tradition, growing Adirondack Blue and Red Patatas, and giving everyone a 10 lb bag for going on the hike. So it's starting to be called the Patata Hike. We couldn't have had better weather, clear, dry, and warm. We stopped at the Henderson Monument and Flowed Lands for a break and picture. What a WOW DAY!!!!!! Up Herbert Brook which had barely a trickle that met dry feet, and a break at the alpine bog. Soon we were all at the summit. Congrats to Mike, Maryanne, and Kim for adding Marshall to their 46er quest, and to Anne for getting #23, halfway there. After lunch, pictures and super views, we headed down the herd path to the Cold Brook Trail, and to the plane crash site. Someday I'd like to find the tail section of the plane. Our last break was at the Lake Colden Outpost, where Dave tried to wade across the lake, and got about half way. The hike back to Upper Works had us out before dark. - The views from some parts of this loop hike we did were very nice but the best one was from 4th and 5th Lake. Thanks to Peter for great map reading to keep us on course to the ponds. Highlights of this outing were seeing a pair of loons, a short bushwhack (Eeks!), Reg playing his horn, good hiking buds, and great early fall weather. Tuesday Outing - Paddle Tue, Sep 26, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week was the amazing week where it was almost 90 degrees and breaking records in the area. So, we went paddling off the shore on the east side of Lake George. We did the short carry down from Shelving Rock Road and paddled north to Glen Island and then headed back south to Log Bay Island where we got out and had our lunch. Then we walked around the island and found a couple of places to go in for a dip to cool off. It was just great! The water wasn't even cold, especially on the side of the island facing the land where there's a shallow sandy area. Hammond and Moose Mtn. Ponds Sat, Sep 30, 2017, Bill Schwarz
- Rain ended just in time for hiking - this is a moderate trail, partly an old farm road along Berrymill Flow. We ended at the lean-to for Moose Mountain Pond, and then discovered a nearby rock face which afforded a better view. - Saturday forecast- rain, highs in mid 60s, low in mid 30s. But Ray & Chrissy showed up! Hung around @ Panera, hung around @ Million Dollar 1/4 mile, drove down Shelving Rock Rd, hiked the rock climber's trail, & carriage trail to Shelving Rock Falls (total 18000 steps...). Monday Monthly Geocache   Mon, Oct 2, 2017, Sarah King and Mo Coutant  
- We had a beautiful day for what I term our "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" geocaching tour. Although our main goal was to hit Belfry Mountain and Crown Point State Park to find the geocaches there, geocaching brings you to unique and interesting spots you might not otherwise visit. Among our stops this day was a local air field used by local flying clubs (planes), a 1946 caboose (trains), a local cemetery where we saw Johnny Podres's gravestone, the famous Champ Sightings sign in Port Henry, Foot's Diner, also in Port Henry (not for eating but to find the cache outside), "Mineville^ the site of a mining operation by the Witherbee-Sherman Co., and of course the great history and scenic beauty of Crown Point. We also had fun identifying fossils at one cache sign and giant puff balls at another. We lunched at the picnic tables, used the bathrooms and generally had a great time finding 16 caches as we toured the area. - Bikes saved us 6 miles of walking - to the "No Bicycles" sign, and back. Fall foliage brightened the overcast - the trek up muddy logging roads, brooks, and past ancient trees was beautiful! The 6/10 mile from COL was thick! Blowdown taller than us, new growth growing through it, a desolate area that looked like it had been bombed... Kept going. Climbed into a down cloud and out the other side. The summit was there - abrupt, tiny, and steep - and we are very happy to be here! Even got a few pictures. Wacked down an easier way, walked woods, crossed brooks, followed old roads, and got to the bikes at dusk. Not everyone gets to visit North River Mountain! Great Group! Great Day! - The hike up the mountain was enjoyable, as was the descent to the pond. The descent out from the pond to return was more steep and slippery, so we had to be very careful. I think this is one that might have better rated as a B+ due to the steep second half of the loop. It might actually be easier on snowshoes. A good day was had by the 10 hikers, though. Tuesday paddle   Tue, Oct 10, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This week we paddled a section of the Schroon River just above the dam before the river empties into the Hudson and up to the rapids in Warrensburg. It's a pretty section of the river with a few backwaters to explore. An eagle flew over just after we got in our boats, which was a nice start to the trip. Anne grabbed the wrong paddle and wound up with two "male" sides, so she used 1/2 her kayak paddle like she was in a canoe. We all took turns doing this and it turned out not to be too bad. Afterwards we headed to the fish hatchery along the Hudson for lunch and checked out the variety of fish getting ready to be stocked next spring. Boreas Mountain Bushwhack   Sat, Oct 14, 2017, Rich Crammond and Jayne Bouder  
- What more could us ADKers ask for! No rain, no bugs, no views from the summit, and a tough bushwhack in some spots. Maybe a little more level ground. Highlights of this outing were: Dan in the front of the group, leading all of the time. (The leaders got bushwhacked!) Thanks again Dan. Also seeing a shed moose antler along the route was neat stuff for sure. Thanks to all for sharing this outing in the 'Dacks. Folded Rock Trail, Cambridge   Sat, Oct 14, 2017, Bill Schwarz
- This is a surprising 800-foot climb in 2.6 miles to a view over the Battenkill valley northeast of Cambridge. Seven climbers made it to the overlook in good time, including several who were testing their uphill stamina. Small stones (scree) made for an interesting descent, but everyone completed the tour. Monthly Fire Tower Challenge hike   Tue, Oct 17, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- This month we took a long drive up to the Tupper Lake area to do a short hike up Mt. Arab for my monthly Fire Tower Challenge hike. The colors weren't as brilliant as prior years in October, but it was still a beautiful drive. This hike is just over 2 miles round trip and less than 1000 feet of elevation gain, so it's an easy hike. The cabin on top was closed up but you could tell the Friends group has done a wonderful job maintaining it and the tower. There's a triad challenge up there to hike 2 other mountains and get a patch, but we couldn't take the time to add those into our day. So, maybe we'll be back another time to finish up that challenge! Participants: Mo Coutant, Leo Demers, Sarah King, Mary Knutson, Barb Tomko.

Indian Pass Summit Rock & Scramble   Sat, Oct 21, 2017, Jayne Bouder
- Hadn't been here in a while, and forgotten how knock down beautiful it is. From Summit Rock, Wallface took up the whole view, with rock climbers shouting back and forth for our entertainment. MONDAY Paddle   Mon, Oct 23, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- We squeezed in one last trip on Lake George before the rain moved in the next day. The wind had already moved in a little bit which stirred up some waves, but not big enough to come into the boats. It did cause us to adjust our route, though. We headed up to Green Harbor before turning around and paddling into the wind. This gave us a good workout as we paddled down and around Elizabeth Island and then it was an easy trip back riding the waves. Afterwards, we had lunch on Eric's deck overlooking the lake! Great way to end the paddling season. Thanks Eric and everyone who joined me on a trip this summer. - It was a beautiful fall day for our Shelving Rock Mountain ascent. We enjoyed the excellent views from the mountain and then headed down the road for the visit to Shelving Rock Falls for lunch and pictures. Tuesday Outing   Tue, Nov 7, 2017, Maureen Coutant
- We started out with an easy 4 mile walk around Lake George for our first Tuesday outing of the season. I usually avoid the village in the summer, so it was a great time to go exlore. We shared our group knowledge of the area and I think everyone learned something. We started at Ushers Park on the east side of the lake just north of $1M beach, which was a new spot for some. Then we saw the new layout at Million $ beach and continued along the walkway on the south end of the beach. Along there, I pointed out the remains of the Ticonderoga, which is now the fireworks barge. The Ti was the largest boat on the Lake before the Lac du Saint Sacrement replaced it. Then we got to the new canoe sculpture (covered for winter) and a rock with a commemorative plaque to honor Gwenne's mom for being the first person to swim the length of the lake. We also stopped at the "echo spot" and the beginning of the Prospect trail/walkway over the Northway, and walked along the new parks near the Charles Woods festival space. We saw some historical buildings along the way and wound up at Caffe Vero for drinks and food. Great first outing! Hope you can join us for one this winter! Goodnow The Great!   Sat, Nov 11, 2017, Joe Babcock
- We started out around 10 degrees, the coldest start for this season. The cold temps were a good thing, as we found out when we came to a part of the lower trail to Goodnow that would have been muddy if it had not been frozen. Most of us were warming up nicely by the time we were half way up to the summit. The views were great along the trail and from the fire tower. We enjoyed pointing out the high peaks. We quickly snapped pictures since the breeze was cold up in the tower. Had a nice hike back to the parking lot and headed to the Interpretive Center for a break. We were lucky to catch a group heading out from the center when we arrived. I was not aware that the center is closed for November and December. We then headed out to Great Camp Santanoni. It had warmed up to the teens, and with the sun shining most of the time, it was a good day to be out in the park. The walk into the Camp was easy and everyone enjoyed exploring the farm that is 1 mile in. From there we made our way down the road, enjoying the wooded landscape, with bridges and streams. As we approached the camp we could make out what turned out to be Santanoni Peak off to our left. When we arrived to the views of Newcomb Lake, I knew we would be at the Great Camp soon. Everyone enjoyed exploring the camp, both the buildings and the lake shore. The ice was just starting to build up along the shore of the lake and made for some great photo ops. We had lunch on the porch, and then explored the boat house before we made our way back to the parking lot. We spent time checking out the Gate Lodge and then headed home. - I went to quite a bit of trouble to get our pickup truck from work, so we would be able to drive in on the rough road. Unfortunately, when Sunday morning rolled around, the truck didn't want to start (it started right up when I got home). Luckily Neal brought his pickup, and was able to drive all of us in. He graciously volunteered to sit in the back and had a wild ride trying to hold on to the bouncing truck and bouncing dog. There was ice in the trail as we got up high and we all put on microspikes. The sun came out as we got near the top and we had wonderful warm sunshine and beautiful clear views. Since Vanderwacker has a fire tower and you can get above the trees, the view is excellent in every direction. On the way down Colleen caught her microspikes in the mud a couple of times and did some acrobatics. - Our destination today was Overlook Mountain, a 4.8 mile round trip up a steep gravel road to a fire tower. In addition, there is the Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Tibetan Buddhist Monastery across from the parking lot, 7 geocaches on the way up, and a cool old abandoned hotel about a half a mile from the summit. We left Queensbury about 8:30 am and made the 2 hour drive south to Overlook. It was an overcast day with temps in the mid 40s. There were patches of ice on the trail but nothing requiring grippers. The first 5 caches were fairly easy finds. Number 6 was located at the old Overlook Mountain Hotel. This is the 3rd group of buildings on this site on Overlook Mountain. The first 2 caught fire, so this one was built of concrete. The structures were never finished and the project was abandoned in 1928. Portions of the resort were still "under construction" in 1939 and the property was eventually sold to New York State in 1940. This cache was a very challenging hide. We even had Todd climbing trees to get a better look into the many crevices around the building. We spent a lot of time looking for the elusive cache, which was "9 feet up in the NE corner." We never did locate it but had a great time looking around the buildings. We lunched at a picnic table near the fire tower and then climbed it to see the view, which we all agreed wasn't as good as the one from the scenic overlook nearby. The 7th cache we skipped as it involved a very steep descent from the top. We all decided that November was the perfect time for this outing as the rattlesnakes were asleep and the snow had not yet arrived. The road up to the mountain was very steep and probably wouldn't be fun covered in ice. Another great outing and fire tower crossed off our list! - This week we took the unmarked trail up Pilot Knob Mtn and at times lost the trail and bushwhacked around for a while. The trail is a bit hard to follow in the best of conditions. But with the leaves down, a dusting of snow in places, and the barricade of sticks removed that should have blocked the wrong routes, we spent a bit of time using our navigating skills! "Are we still on the trail?" was a frequent thought even after we found the trail again after wondering around for awhile. Luckily, we were an adventurous group and we all enjoyed the amazing views from the clearing and a bit higher at the false summit. It's really one of the best views of the lake. - This week we did a walk along the Rush Pond trail in Queensbury since I was too swamped with Thanksgiving Day preparations to get away for a Fire Tower Hike! It seemed as if it was just the ticket for lots of folks since we had 18 people on the walk. Great to get a little exercise and fresh air before getting back to cleaning and cooking! - Although it was a chilly day in the upper 20s or low 30s, that didn't stop many people who apparently wanted to work off the Thanksgiving overeating! We had one of the biggest crowds for any of my trips! Good thing it was on the Bog Meadow Trail in Saratoga that can handle the parade of participants. The group spread out and we all saw each other when the front group reached the end after 2 miles and passed the others as they headed back. We stopped along the bridges to enjoy the views, but not for too long as the breeze made it feel even chillier. Good to see so many out enjoying the fresh air! - Starting on 2 inches of dry snow we went softly up Indian Pass & to Wallface. Wallface was as steep & thick as usual, & the snow depth increased, still dry, to 8 inches as we ascended. On top we found an acre of summit forest had been chopped up, for a helicopter landing pad as near as we could guess. There ought to be a law. Great winter day! - This week we took a long drive down to the Catskills to do a Fire Tower Challenge hike at Balsam Lake Mountain. We were actually in the car longer than on the hike, but we had a nice hike to break up the car ride! We were a little worried when we drove through a snow squall, but it was short lived and we had fine weather for the hike. We had our microspikes, but didn't put them on since we could easily get around the little bit of ice that was on the trail. The trail was very gradual and we had a nice hike. We got to the top and were a little surprised to find 2 hunters and had a nice talk about the area, trails, and the hazards of dressing all in black and running down a trail like a bear during hunting season! - A great day to be in the park. We hiked around the blue trail for a longer route. Almost needed the snowshoes. This park has some fine big old pines and nice views of the area. Didn't see much wildlife but had a good time in our surroundings of forest and stream. Reg played a nice Christmas song on his pocket horn so it was all good. Thanks to all for sharing this holiday-time outing with an old dude who enjoys being out there in the wild. Didn't get no better!
