Buck Mountain Fri, Jan 1, 2010, Reg Prouty and Jack Whitney
A large group of 17 eager New Years revellers rang in the new year to the playing and
singing of Auld Lang Syne on the summit of Buck Mountain New Years Day. The group separated
into the hares and torti and rejoined on the summit for lunch and the ringing in of the New
Year with bells , singing, and the sound of the trumpet. A good time was had by all and all
agreed that there was no better way to start off the new year than a great day of snowshoeing
and renewing old acquaintances.
Participants : Reg Prouty, Jack Whitney, Bob
Aspholm, Bruce Cushing, John Sgnakowski, Andy Janz, Bernie Buttles, Helena Nanerez,
Charles Grabitzky, Ray Boucher, Rich Myette, Tricia Lockwood, Jackie Keren, Erica
Halbrook, Sandy Yellen, Debbie Eichenberger, and Liz Gee.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Jan 6, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
Eight snowshoe enthusiasts met Gary at Moreau State Park on a day that offered
peaks of sunshine, temps in the mid-20's, and no wind. We chose the Red Oak Ridge trail,
then veered off to cross the lake and ended back at the parking lot in just 2 hours.
Participants : Ginnie and Joe Kelterborn, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Gary Rodd, George and Irene
Sammons, Sandi Sullivan, and Neal Van Dorsten.
YMG - Fire Tower & Grub - Hadley Mt. Sat, Jan 9, 2010, Jonathan Lane
This was a great day, with good views and great company. On the return we stopped at
the Longhorn for some grub, which we all enjoyed.
Participants : Shelly Burke,
Chandra Geremick, Daisy Kavanagh, Joe Kavanagh, Jonathan Lane, Lindsey Morehouse, and
Ryan Simko.
Winter High Peak- Leaders choice Sun, Jan 10, 2010, Jack Whitney
It was around +10 degrees and overcast skies when we started from the parking area
at the Ausable Club. A quick walk down the road and taking a right, we were soon at the
Wedgebrook trail. There were some views of the surrounding peaks and the slides on Giant Mt. on
our journey up the mountain. Arriving at the summit of Lower Wolfjaws we took a short
break and took some pictures. A great winter day in the High Peaks.
Participants : Erica
Halbrook, John Synakowski, Jean Holcomb, Jim Stine, Dan Recinelle, Richard Staley, Trica
Lockwood, Madiline Kowlik Bowa, Eberhardt Burkowski, Heidi teRiele Kaikoski, and Jack
Whitney.
Monthly Geocache Trip Mon, Jan 11, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
Sarah and I introduced Liz to geocaching. We hiked along the Western Ridge trail
until we found the hidden geocache. On the way down, Licia found a perfect spot to hide a
new cache and Sarah had one all set and ready to hide. Sarah is going to name that one
after her. So if you go to geocaching.com, you'll know the history of the "Licia's cache"
in Moreau State Park. Then we moved on to check out a nearby county forest ... found the
cache, but not much parking.
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Liz Gee, Sarah King, and
Licia Mackey
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Jan 13, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This week it really wasn't great for snowshoeing or XC skiing, but we decided if it
was going to be skiable anywhere nearby, it would be at the groomed trails at the Wilton
Wildlife Preserve. We were right. Gary had an equipment/wardrobe malfunction and
snowshoed while the rest of us skied. He got a great workout trying to keep up!
Participants :
Maureen Coutant, Mike George, Emilie Gould, Licia Mackey, Jim Ralston, and Gary Rodd.
Snowshoe Moreau State Park Sat, Jan 16, 2010, Bill Schwarz
New hike/snowshoe trails have been added at Moreau State Park in the past year and
we decided to sample some of them. We had a bit of a thaw, but usually enough snow cover,
and made it to the overlook above the lake, instead of the river. Thanks to Bob for his
insider's info on the park. We didn't walk on water (the frozen lake) this year because it was
pretty slushy.
Participants : Pascal Garzynski, Alan and Liz Gee, Julie Girard, Bob
Goodwin, Susan Keely, Lynn Mayack, Bill Schwarz, Ryan Simko, David Sowizdrzal, and Devan
Tracy.
Beginner Snowshoe Hike - Lost Pond (Putnam Pond Area) Sun, Jan 17, 2010, Pat Desbiens
The group was small but enthusiastic on this peaceful walk into a beautiful little
pond. By the time we reached the pond, the sky was a beautiful blue and the sun shone
brightly. The ice on the pond was solid, affording us the opportunity to walk the length of the
pond, rather than scrambling over the rocky trail with our snowshoes. Sitting on the
rocks, we were able to eat our lunch in the warmth of the sun and then it was back to our cars. A
perfect way to spend a Sunday morning.
Participants : Diane Hurtt, Paul Dean, Walter
(Spud) Perkins, and Pat Desbiens.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Jan 20, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
We were surprised by a big group to join us for a walk along the Hudson River in South
Glens Falls. The snow was mushy or hard packed, so we decided a walk would be best this
week. We came prepared with cameras, but the albino squirrel blended into the snow on the
trees! If anyone gets a picture, let us know!
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Margaret
Curtis, Ginny and Joe Kelterborn, Penny and Ray LoPresti, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath, Bob
Powell, Gary Rodd, and George Sammons.
Lapland Lakes Ski Sat, Jan 23, 2010, Sandy Yellen
I decided to take the trip to the Cascade ski area since it was a beautiful day and the
conditions were excellent in the High Peaks area. After a brief lesson for the novices we
started out on the easy trails then onto the big hills! It was so warm and sunny we had lunch
outside on the deck with aa awesome view of Cascade Mt. Everybody did a great job-even the
beginners.
Participants : Mark Rye, Jim Dickson, Reg Prouty, Susan Keely, Lynn & Jennifer
Mayack, Larry Hoenig, and Sandy Yellen.
Stillwater Locks Eagle Watch Snowshoe Sat, Jan 23, 2010, Rich Crammond
This was by far a great day to be hiking with bright sun shine and blue skies. We
didn't see any eagles but we sure did have a good time exploring. We saw one red tailed hawk
and lots of bittersweet vines along the way. It was a cold start, but not bad for
January. Thanks for some rugged ADK'ers for hiking along on this clear and cold day in the
great outdoors.
Participants : Joan Ferguson, Kathy Ryan, Joanne Walczni, Paul Dean,
Julie Girard, Marsha Nade, Liz Gee, and Rich Crammond.
Pyramid and Gothics Sun, Jan 24, 2010, Steve Mackey
I only had one person call, and then they had something come up, so we didn't go.
Licia and I skiied into Marcy Dam instead. It was good skiing and a nice day so I don't know
what happened. I will probably try again next winter, as it is an awesome hike. I would
rate it as one of my top three winter favorites.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Jan 27, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
Was it the promise of a coffee break at Uncommon Grounds? The fact that the skiing or
snowshoeing wasn't going to be great anywhere? The chance to check out Saratoga architecture
or Skidmore? Or the forecast of much colder weather the next day? Whatever it was, it
brought out 15 people for a stroll through Saratoga.
Participants : Fran Balch, Maureen
Coutant, Margaret Curtis, Ely Fuller, Mike George, Emilie Gould, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn,
Sarah King, Penny & Ray LoPresti, Licia Mackey, Gary Rodd, George Sammons, and Sandi
Sullivan.
YMG - High Peaks - Algonquin & Iroquois Sat, Jan 30, 2010, Jonathan Lane
Canceled due to extreme weather.
Pilot Knob Bushwhack Sat, Jan 30, 2010, Rich Myette
A hearty foursome set out at nine below zero and first visited Inman Pond. The sun
came out to warm our world a little. We had great views on top of Pilot Knob. Two of our
number had not been on Pilot Knob, two had not bushwhacked and one was on his first ADK
outing so a good adventure was had by all.
Participants : David Columb, Matt Seray, Scott
Cooper and Rich Myette.
February 2010
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Feb 3, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This was another one in our series of coffee walks. In trying to avoid the ice we
headed to the streets of Lake George Village and we actually had to walk in the streets in
many places to avoid the ice on the sidewalk! It was another beautiful day with gorgeous
views and great company. We walked around the village for an hour or so and then wound up in
the Bank Cafe for coffee and over to the LGA courthouse gallery to take in the exhibit.
Still hoping for more snow!
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Mike George, Ginger & Joe
Kelterborn, Penny & Ray LoPresti, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath, Kathy Miller, Hal Rose, George &
Irene Sammons, Edna VanDorsten
LOJ - Upper Works Sat, Feb 6, 2010, Steve Mackey
I only got one confirmed call, and we also ended up going to Winter Camp, so the trip
got canceled. However, I skied from the LOJ up to the Phelps turn off and conditions
were really good. We also did a ski-snowshoe trip in January and skied into Flowed Lands
and I was surprised how much uphill there was from Upper Works. If I schedule it again
next winter, make sure you sign up for the southbound group.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Feb 10, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This week we decided to try to walk along the trail around Moreau Lake. The trail was
icy and gave the stabilicers and yak traks a work out. It was actually easier walking on
the lake and Mud Pond. We spotted a possible eagle...or other large bird of prey. Also a
very large squirrel nest (maybe) off in the distance. We vowed to come back again and
examine it a bit closer up.
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Liz Gee, Mike George, Ginny &
Joe Kelterbon, Sarah King,Penny & Ray LoPresti, Licia Mackey, Gary Rodd
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Feb 17, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This outing in Crandall Park presented many variables. Trail conditions had a
fresh fallen wet snow over a hard, icy base which resulted in the participants using
varied techniques: nordic skis, snowshoes, micro-spikes, and yak traks. All
participants remained in a relatively tight knit group on a morning that saw sun, clouds, and
snow flurries.
Participants : Chris Bourgeois, Kathy Miller, Licia Mackey, Liz Gee,
Mike George, and Gary Rodd
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Feb 24, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
With iffy weather forecasts, we took advantage of an indoor option for
exercise...the free adult skate at the Glens Falls Recreation Center. Gary had to clean a mouse
house out off his skate and dust them off. But Gary and Mike got their skating legs and
balance back after a few spins around the rink.
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Mike
George, Licia Mackey, Gary Rodd
Sawyer Mountain Sat, Feb 27, 2010, Rich Myette
A new snow had blanketed the mountain and snowshoeing was great. There was a light
snow in the air. Even though no distant sights were available the beauty of the snow
covered trees and rocks was satisfying. One of our group was on her first mountain
snowshoe.
Participants : Liz and Allen Gee, Marsha Noble, Scott Cooper and Rich Myette.
March 2010
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Mar 3, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This week we did something really different and went to Steve Mackey's
Appalachian Trail Program as our outing! It was great to see and hopefully got us motivated for
more outings to come!
Participants : Too many to count!
Monday Geocache hike/walk Mon, Mar 8, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
This was a great outing. It was a beautiful day with temps in the 40s, bright
sunshine, and snow in places. We found 4 geocaches in the Stewarts Ledge area at the bottom of
Pilot Knob. We taught Don a lot about geocaching and now he can get out their and enjoy his
Christmas gift more! We also saw Frankenpine and had to do some bushwhacking after
inadvertently following the road that was cut to get it set up!
Participants : Maureen Coutant,
Sarah King, Don Thorn
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Mar 10, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
A brisk sunny day made our walk along the Harry Betar Walkway very enjoyable.
Walkway conditions were mostly clear and wildlife sightings included one cardinal and a
large number of migrating canadian geese resting along the riverbank.
Participants :
Virginia Carluccio, Mike George, Ginny and Joe Kelterborn, Becky Meath, and Gary Rodd
YMG - Fire Towers - Belfry & Poke-O-Moonshine Sun, Mar 14, 2010, Jonathan Lane
Canceled due to poor weather predictions.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Mar 17, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
Ahh...what a perfect St. Patrick's Day! To be out for a hike with the temps near 60 in
the middle of March was wonderful! We hiked to the lookout on French Mtn, with
landowner permission, and had a great time. We started with scones in the parking area and had
a snack on top sitting in t-shirts, enjoying the view. There was a bit of snow and ice
on the bike trail and at the very bottom of the trail, but after that, it was all gone.
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Mike George, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Bob Powell, Gary & Shar
Rodd
MERCK FOREST & FARMLAND CENTER HIKE/SNOWSHOE Sat, Mar 20, 2010, Ray Bouchard
As it turned out snowshoes came in handy by the time we reached 2200’ elevation
where we encountered about 8” of packed snow that softened as the day warmed up. After
climbing up Antone Mt. we dropped down to a fairly new cabin called Ned’s Place, for lunch. To
finish up our 6 mile hike we dropped down to Beebe and Birch ponds before we headed back to
the barns to visit the animals. The two Suffolk work horses were an instant hit as they
loved the carrots that people brought along. A short walk up the hill to the lambing pen
wasn’t quite as rewarding. Only one sheep had given birth recently to a cute, cuddly,
black lamb but a glance at the others in the upper field suggested that more were due any
day. 17

Whiteface Sat, Mar 20, 2010, Steve Mackey
It was really hard to predict what kind of conditions we would find, the road was
bare pavement right up to the ticket gate and then about two foot of mushy snow all the way
to the summit. We wore snowshoes hopeing to pack down a trail, but temperatures were
mild and the sleds would move along slowly and then sink completely into the snow. We
took the two slides as short cuts to the top and Maria had to put on crampons on the really
steep stuff. Good trip, but sledding was no thriller.
Participants : Steve & Licia
Mackey, Mike Fuller, and Maria Rawson.
Winter High Peak Sun, Mar 21, 2010, Jack Whitney
A 50% chance of rain was forecast but five of us ventured forth to do the last winter
peak of the season. We chose Cascade. It was snowing going up, which changed to a light
rain. There were views from the first overlook to the surrounding High Peak area. We
arrived at the junction, and there was still enough snow that someone had dug the sign out.
When we arrived at the summit, we encountered snow and sleet and limited views. We
decided to leave Porter for another day and headed back to our cars.
Participants : Jayne
Bouder, Erica Halbrook, Bob Buckley, Nancy Buckley, and Jack Whitney.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Mar 24, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
We had much better than expected weather and the wind died down once we were amongst
the trees. Many had never explored the Queensbury XC trails and adjacent Rush Pond
area. Everyone enjoyed the trails and the opportunity to be out on a much better than
expected Spring Day!
Participants :Virginia Carluccio, Maureen Coutant, Margaret
Curtis, Mike George, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath,
Sandy Powell, Gary Rodd, George Sammons, Gretchen Stark
Eleventh Mt. Sat, Mar 27, 2010, Rich Myette
A bright and sunny day accompanied our hardy group of happy bushwhackers. We
steeply ascended the cliffs of Eleventh Mountain to clear views of the interior of the
valley of the East Branch of the Sacandaga River and nearby mountains. After lunch at the
lookout we ascended futher up Eleventh Mountain to more views. This jovial group
consisted of Jayne Bouder, John Synakowski, Mark Janey, Dianna Eckler, Scott Cooper, Erica
Holbrook, Bob Buckley, Nancy Buckley and Rich Myette.
April 2010
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Thu, Apr 1, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This week we returned to the Van Dusen Preserve in Queensbury. We had done it on
snowshoes a few months ago and wanted to do it again before the foliage came out and obsured the
view. A great hike and nice lookout if you follow the blazes at the top of the trail loop. We
did see quite a few ticks...wood ticks we think, but they're out so be sure to check
yourself after being out in the woods.
Participants : Rene Clarke, Mo Coutant, Margaret
Curtis, Liz Gee, Mike George, Emilie Gould, Ablina Ientile, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn,
Licia Mackey, Becky Meath, Gary Rodd, George Sammons
Middle Mountain bushwack Sat, Apr 3, 2010, Jayne Bouder and Rich Myette
This trip was originated by Jayne Bouder, who was not able to go, so Rich took it on so
as not to cancel. After a mile on our hike and along Fly Brook, we were greeted by a large
stand of impressive white pines, one taking three people to join arms to encompass.
Along the trail the group viewed the impressive escarpment of Catamount Mt. and decided
to bushwhack the larger Catamount instead of Middle Mt. Once on top of Catamount's
high cliffs the views were spectacular! The day allowed short sleeves and shorts. The
sky was bright blue with no clouds and the visibility was excellent. The High Peaks and
the many other mountains gave great views. All agreed there was no better ambiance for
lunch. Soaring on the thermals and close to us were hawks, perigren falcons and ravens. We
also saw an emerging garter snake and the earliest wild flowers. On the way down the
group worked well together to solve some bushwhacking route options. Once back in the
Fly Brook valley, the day was so warm that we all decided to wade the wide brook instead
of taking a log crossing. What a very refreshing crossing with cool water to bathe our
tired feet!
Participants : Nancy and Bob Buckley, Erica Holbrook, John Synakowski and
Rich Myette.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Apr 7, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
We had sun, 80 degrees, great views, little mud, and NO bugs for our trip to the Pilot
Knob gazebo and waterfalls above. A few of Chris's "trail buddies" slithered across
our path. Spring beauties, white and purple hepatica were in bloom. Mike (after
errands) got his aerobics catching up with us. George and Don navigated and corralled us.
Diane was welcomed; a new hiker with ADK. Francine was congradulated; her very first
hike.
Participants : Don Thorn, Francine Stuart, Diane Hurtt, Chris Bourgeois, Mike
George, George Sammons, Licia Mackey
Saratoga National Historical Park Sat, Apr 10, 2010, Rich Crammond
This was by far a great day in the park. We made a loop through some areas that took
some extra hiking for some real nice landscape. We saw the yellow bellied sapsucker
thanks to Rich Speidel. The deer running through the fields were a real treat also. Thanks
to all my ADK hiking buds for a great day.
Participants : Rich Speidel, Mark Janey,
Marsha Noble, Jonathan Lane, Fran Balch, Chris Bourgeois, John Brosseau, Liz and Alan
Gee, Rich Crammond
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Apr 14, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
We had a great day for a hike. Blue skies and a perfect temp, so we decided to hike
Prospect. A little windy on top, so we went down to the picnic tables and had lunch. Found a
couple of geocaches along the way and only a few wildflowers (hepatica, yellow violets,
trailing arbutus).
Participants : Mo Coutant, Mike George, Diane Hurtt, Albina Ientile,
Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Gary Rodd, George Sammons, Don Thorn
Bike Ride on GF bike trail Sat, Apr 17, 2010, Steve Mackey
The weather was a little sketchy, but 4 intrepid bikers (with questionable brain
size) braved the elements. It was actually snowing on the summit of Prospect. The ride
down was quite a bit quicker than the ride up, and then we stopped at Stewarts and had to
make the decision whether to go for ice cream or hot coffee. A nice little adventure,
will probably lead it again next spring.
Participants : Steve & Licia Mackey, Jim
Coutant, Rich Elton.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Apr 21, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
A perfect sunny day greeted this outing group of 18. Plus we had the added pleasure
of geo-caching with Sarah & wild flower identification with Licia! The group
remained highly motivated & in close contact on the trek up this beautiful mountain. Much
humor was exchanged with mis-interpretations of erratic rocks & baby birches along
with exploration of geo-caches & wildflower identifications! Lunch on the
mountain-top with pleasant conversation in the brilliant sunshine was one of many highlights!
Participants : Becky Meath, Margaret Curtis, Irene & George Sammonds, Diane Hurtt, Rudy
Tomasik, Kelley Fletcher, Marsha Noble, Mike George, Maryanne Mackenzie, Licia Mackey,
Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Julie Gillman, Don Thorn, Ray Boucher, Sarah King, Gary Rodd.
Crane Mountain Sat, Apr 24, 2010, Rich Myette
A wonderful day was had on Crane Mountain as the weather provided a magnificient
spring day. The early spring flowers were out, the sun was bright and the views were far.
This was an extensive bushwhack that wound a way through the eastern escaprment, a
narrow path with high cliffs above and below, starting by walking through some enormous
talus. The hardy bushwhakers climbed up and down to eventually ascend the eastern high
cliffs with views of the eastern and southern mountains and well into the Green
Mountains. Lunch was on a ledge that gave the impression of being suspended in mid-air. After
ascending and pushing through a long stretch of very closed-in, grabbing trees we knew we
were close to the summit as we walked past the ruins of the fire observers cabin. After
more views from the summit we continued on to the ever-pleasant Crane Mountain Pond. At
the pond the group opted to continue the bushwhack by ascending the northwest rocky
ridge with excellent view of the high peaks. Later we descended the pond outlet trail, a
steep afair where we viewed the plaque that memorializes Paul Shaefer, a lover of Crane
Mountain and all wilderness. Then we headed for the entrance of Crane Mountain Cave. A few of
us will remember the snow balls that hurled our way (or went down our backs) from a few
patches of snow and ice that were found in deep places throughout the day's trip. The trace
of the old Putnam Farm Rd. returned us to the parking area.
Participants : Rich
Myette, Jayne Bouder, Nancy Buckley, Bob Buckley, Linda Ranadu, John Synakowski, Scott
Cooper, Steve Makay.
Monday Geocache walk/hike Mon, Apr 26, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
The threat of rain moved this trip to Friday. We decided to assemble a team to look
for some supposedly tricky and difficult caches in the Hudson Point area. You had to
find two caches to get the coordinates that take you to the final cache. We did find it to
be difficult to find and had we not called in for a clue...I'm not sure we'd have found
it that day! We also found the poles that one of us inadvertently dropped - bonus
points for that!
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Caroline &
Chris Miller
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Apr 28, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This week we did a quick pace along the HF -> Fort Edward section of the Feeder Canal
trail. We went NE where the trail Ts toward RT 196 in Fort Edward. We'd never gone to this end
before. We saw some wildflowers, but not too many yet.
Participants : Virginia Carluccio,
Maureen Coutant, Mike George, Albina Ientile, Ginny and Joe Kelterborn, Licia Mackey,
Becky Meath
Bullhead Mountain Sat, May 1, 2010, Rich Crammond and Jayne Bouder
This was a tough hike but very rewarding. We all had a good workout. The Puffer Pond
trail is very nice along with the streams runoff. It was good to hike with my Cousin Mac on
his first outing with ADK. Good luck Mac and hope to see you on the trail again. Jayne and
Reg were good hiking buddies. Thanks to all on and off the trail.
Participants : Reg
Prouty, Jayne Bouder, Mac Durrin, Rich Crammond

Spring Bird Walk – Peebles Island State Park Sat, May 1, 2010, Rich Speidel
Cloudy at the start, the morning turned sunny and unseasonably warm as we made our
way around the perimeter of Peebles Island. We saw a variety of birds from the bluffs
along the Mohawk River, including three red-bellied woodpeckers on one tree, spotted
sandpipers in the channel below, and a red-tailed hawk high above. An interesting
confrontation was observed on an adjacent island: two crows were harassing a pileated
woodpecker while a Canada goose watched from a few feet away. Moments later the goose charged
and chased off one of the crows; the other crow then took flight, and the woodpecker
survived the turmoil…thanks to the goose. You never know what surprises nature has in
store! We identified 37 species of birds on this almost hot first day of May.
Participants : Fran Balch, Barbara Bave, Jim Myers, Shelly and William Burke, Sharyn Furman, Liz
and Alan Gee, Laurie LaFond, Licia and Steve Mackey, Edna Van Dorsten, Rich Speidel
YMG - Noonmark Mt. & Diner Sun, May 2, 2010, Jonathan Lane
What a wonderful day! The forecast called for potential rain in the afternoon, but
we saw not a drop, merely some cloudy skies and beautiful views. After the hike we
enjoyed lunch at the Noonmark diner, ordering items such as vegetable lasagna and banana
pancakes - yum!
Participants : Liz Gee, Chandra Geremick, Laura Golas, Adam Jones,
Jonathan Lane, and Marsha Noble.
Evening Paddle Tue, May 4, 2010, Maureen Coutant
We actually made it from Lake Luzerne through the inlet to Second Lake. We gave a
celebratory cheer and then it started to sprinkle. On the way there, we had to cross many beaver
dams, pull our boats through shallow rapids, go under a bridge and through a culvert. It
is always quite an adventure and a much easier return trip!
Participants : Maureen
Coutant, Joy Muller-McCoola, Maria Rawson, George Sammons, Alison Saville, Bill Thomas
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, May 5, 2010, Maureen Coutant
This week we walked in the North Woods of Skidmore. We didn't see as many
wildflowers as last year, but we still saw plenty of them and checked out a new trail. Always
enjoyable!
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Mike George, Susan Howard, Ginger and Joe
Kelterborn, Licia Mackey, George and Irene Sammons
Bicycle Trails and nearby roads Thu, May 6, 2010, Rich Myette
Three riders left Queensbury, rode through Glens Falls on the bike trail and
accessed the Feeder Canal Trail, riding along the old mule towpath. We rode to the end and
then a little further to a point that crossed the Old Champlain Canal on a wooden bridge.
The afternoon was cheery with occasional wind gusts.
Participants : Maria Rossman,
Dave Avendoor, Rich Myette.
Pharaoh Mountain Sat, May 8, 2010, Reg Prouty
We began our trip after carpooling into two vehicles for our trip to the trailhead.
Even though it was raining lightly due to the dense woods and use of raingear we did not
mind a little rain as the afternoon forecast was optimistic. Upon summiting we decided
to have lunch in the sheltered area between the three overlooks. The leader supplied
a mini-concert on his pocket trumpet of patriotic music and show tunes. As the
leader was showing the third and last overlook the wind increased and suddenly began to
clear the summit of clouds so that great views were afforded after all. As is usual in the
Adirondacks, patience pays off when trying to get a summit to clear off.
Participants : McCade
Durrin, Erin Maggi, Gary Maggi, Terje Kuusk, Mickey Onofrietto, Reg Prouty, Joanne
Walczak, Dick Wilson.
Spring Bird Walk – Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park Sat, May 8, 2010, Rich Speidel
The weather was not good for birding on this Mother’s Day weekend. The choice was
either: rain and overcast on Saturday, or high wind and cold on Sunday. We picked Saturday
and, although it rained most of the morning, our intrepid group discovered a
surprising variety of birds. Early on, a scarlet tanager lifted our spirits by singing
overhead from an open branch; its vivid red and black brightened the woodland gloom. Soon we
saw pine and yellow-rumped warblers, and later heard four other warbler species
along the trail. The rain stopped before reaching a field, so we could slow down to enjoy
the sights and sounds of four different sparrows. New birds kept appearing as we
neared the parking area, and the final tally grew to 31 species…given the weather, this
was twice the number we had expected!
Participants : Pat Brennan, Cathy Hall, Keith

Monday Geocache walk/hike Mon, May 10, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
On this trip we went to the Skidmore North Woods and we even invited the dogs along
since this is a popular dog walking area and we knew we wouldn't be in a rush. So the two dogs
had a good time and the adults found all the caches in the area. It was also amazing to see
how many fewer wildflowers were blooming since the previous week!
Participants :
Maureen Coutant( and Charlie), Sarah King, Don Thorn (and Ollie).
ADK Headqtrs Workday Sat, May 15, 2010, Maureen Coutant
Thank you to all who came out and helped out at HQs! We were able to get all the jobs
done, plus a few extras and get home earlier than expected! I think that's a first! Thank
you, thank you, thank you!
Spring Bird Walk – Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park Sat, May 15, 2010, Rich Speidel
We were grateful for mostly sunny skies and a light breeze on this morning;
favorable weather for seeing birds and following their songs. Our group had luck observing
some colorful warblers that can be elusive and hard to see (including magnolia,
black-throated blue and black-throated green warblers). Other highlights included
great-crested flycatchers, nesting kingbirds and robins, and good views of up to three scarlet
tanagers and one indigo bunting…in their dazzling tropical plumage. We ended an enjoyable
outing with 45 species of birds identified; a healthy variety of feathered friends!
Participants : Jim Campinell, Pat Fitzgerald, Liz and Alan Gee, Bruce Goodale, Fran Herve, Linda
and Richard Hovious, Jane Peak, Laurie LaFond, Erin and Gary Maggi, Peg McCanty,
Kathleen Swantak, Rich Speidel
Cook Mountain (Lake George) Sun, May 16, 2010, Pat Desbiens
We had a few first time participants on an ADK outing on this hike. We were graced
with a perfect day for a hike, warm temperature, sunshine and the reward of a wonderful
view from the top - a perfect introduction to a southern Adirondack hike. The
wildflowers were in bloom much to the delight of a couple of photographers in the group.
Participants : Jim Brown, Jonathan Lane, Jack Whitney, Sue Atkins, Sarah Harbour, Chris
Bourgeois, Lela Atkinson, Melissa Hickok, Fatima Hammed, Brenda Arley, Bill Barney,
Barbara Torko, William Wasilauski, Susan Jefts, Marsha Noble, Mary Ann Hines, Pat
Desbiens.
Evening Paddle Tue, May 18, 2010, Maureen Coutant
This week we paddled on the wetland area of Glen Lake. In all the twists and turns and
exploring, we lost part of the group for awhile, but we all gathered up again and some of us even
stayed on for some food at the Docksider over looking the lake. It was a great evening out.
We saw a lot of beaver lodges! Partipants: David Avigdor, Maureen Coutant, Ralph
DeCristofari, Paul Dietershagen, Matt Hoag, Ken Hughes, Melissa Ientile, Heather, Licia &
Steve Mackey, Bob & Sandy Powell, and George Sammons.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, May 19, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This week we walked/hiked in the Lake George Rec Area. The very likely chance of
rain kept many away, but it turned out to be a great morning to be out with perfect temps,
no bugs and the trails weren't wet. We had a great walk along the trails skirting the
stream. Beautiful dark moss on the rocks!
Participants : Nancy Burke, Maureen Coutant,
Ginger and Joe Kelterborn, Licia Mackey
Hail Mountain Bushwhack Sat, May 22, 2010, Rich Myette
Twelve hours of trailess hiking saw our group finding their way by following along
the dry edge of a delightful swamp, climbing an ascending ridge and sighting from knob
to knob. We lunched on West Hail and then made our way to the vastly open, rocky summit
of Hail Mountain to 360 degree views of High Peaks, Lake Champlain, the Green Mts. and
other places of interest. The wildflowers were abundant and the weather was
spectacular. The total ascent was 3500 feet and ten miles total distance. Nathan June joined us
as a first time ADK hiker and he clearly has hiked before.
Participants : George
Baranauskas, Erika Holbrook, Jayne Bouder, Scott Cooper, Nathan June, Rich Myette.
Owls Head Fire Tower Sat, May 22, 2010, Alison Darbee
We had just two of us show up but we went ahead and got another fire tower off our
lists! We saw zillions of toads, a couple of snakes on the rocks up top, many butterflies
flying (and in groups on the ground!), oh and wonderful 360 degree views from the tower!
Participants : Marsha Noble, Alison Darbee.
Spring Bird Walk – Pack Forest, Warrensburg Sat, May 22, 2010, Rich Speidel
Our group had an enjoyable morning and some surprise discoveries, including a
pair of Canada geese with seven goslings, and a red-eyed vireo building a nest in a pine
tree. Later, while walking on a dirt road, we accidently flushed a hermit thrush from its
ground nest. The nest was within three feet of the road edge and contained four greenish
blue eggs. Another unexpected treat was a view of the ovenbird, a common but elusive
woodland warbler that is difficult to see despite its ringing song. Colorful warblers
observed included parula, yellow-rumped, black-throated blue, and yellowthroat. We
concluded a fine day of birding in the Southern Adirondacks with 37 species.
Participants :
Fran Balch, Barbara Bave, Pat Brennan, Jim Campinell, Bruce Goodale, Cathy Hall,
Keith Hall, Eric Krantz, Tom Miller, Rich Speidel.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, May 26, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
We had originally intended to climb Cat Mtn, but with the temps in the 90s ... we lost
motivation for that. Plus we didn't want to lose a participant to heat stroke! So, we changed
the plan to a paddle on Lake George. We got to the $1M beach parking lot to find it closed,
so we launched from Beach Rd after dropping boats and moving cars. We paddled up the
lake three miles to Diamond Island. Then we all went in the water. It felt great and
surprisingly warm for Lake George before Memorial Day. We also explored the island and found a
Monument, nice pavilion, two outhouses and a few docks.
Participants : Maureen Coutant,
Mike George, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Gary Rodd, George Sammons.
June 2010
Evening Paddle Tue, Jun 1, 2010, Maureen Coutant
We had a great paddle/picnic in the Spier Falls section of the Hudson. It was the
first time in that area for some and the first time on a trip for others. Steve taught Gen
how to use her paddle to spray other kayakers, but fortunately they were the ones who
got the most wet! We scouted out the rocks and picked the best one for the picnic and
shared food, stories, and fun. Mike and Gen went swimming and then loaded up 2 big bags of
garbage from the woods nearby and hauled them out.
Participants : Gen, Jim & Mo Coutant,
Ralph DeCristofaro, Mike George, Gerry and Lynn Hare, Ken Hughes, Licia & Steve Mackey,
Maria Rawson, Alison Saville, Charlotte Smith.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Jun 2, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This week we hiked Buck Mtn from the backside. Surprisingly, no one had done it this
easier way but the trip leader. The bugs weren't bad at all, the weather was great, and the
view spectacular as always. The pine pollen wasn't as bad as last week, but you could
actually see a line of it one the Lake below. That was a first.
Participants : Maureen
Coutant, Diane Hurrt, Albina Ientile,Sarah King, Laurie LaFond, Gary Rodd, George
Sammons, Sandi Sullivan, and Kathy Taylor
High Peak, Seymour Sat, Jun 5, 2010, Alison Darbee and Joe Murphy
We left Queensbury in a torrential down pour, complete with lightening and
thunder, hoping for the best! We got lucky and drove out of the storm as we headed north to the
Corey’s road trailhead. By time we hit the trail all sprinkles had stopped. The mist and
clouds eventually departed as the day went on and we got a few dramatic views from the top.
Sunshine accompanied us on the way down and out. Great group, and great attitudes even on our
short scenic route experience! Thanks to all for a great day and congrats on another High
Peak!
Participants : Madeline Kowalik-Bova, Ray O’Connor, Brandon Myers, Helena
Nevarez, Wayne Richter, Mike Stahl, Gary Wilcox, Joe Murphy and Alison Darbee.
Mo-Rodd Mid-week Adventure Wed, Jun 9, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This was the day of the tragedy in another part of Lake George where a kayaker was hit
by a motor boat and drowned. We were paddling in the inlet and NW bay and only saw one
boat while we were out. The main thing is that the motor boat saw us. After I found out
about the accident, it made me thankful for our large groups and intentional planning to
not be on the lake during busy times or in busy areas. It's a beautiful lake, but you need
to be careful and even when you are, terrible things can happen. I think we'll all be a
little more aware and careful due to this incident. Our trip was saved at the beginning by
an Americader who had an extra paddle. We were unloading when we realized that in our
effort to conserve gas, a paddle wasn't moved to the car that had a kayak loaded onto it in
the Panera's parking lot! We paddled out to the bay, but didn't make it to the point
before the wind and waves came up. That was the point where we turned around and let the
waves push us back to the inlet. Sarah also found some kayak geocaches along the way.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Ely Fuller, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Gary Rodd, George Sammons,
Kathy Taylor, Bill Thomas.
High Peak, Dix from Rt. 73 Sun, Jun 13, 2010, Alison Darbee and Joe Murphy
We left Queensbury with an overcast sky and passed through sprinkles on our way to
the Round Lake trailhead. We had a slight mist in the air during our travels, and a very
muddy hike. Can't say that we had a view from the top, but we now know what it's like to be in a
cloud! Needless to say, a great group, a fine hike, and we even had a first time High Peak
hiker in our group! Thanks to all for a great day and congrats on another High Peak.
Participants included Madeline Kowalik-Bova, Terje Kuusk, Helena Nevarez, Dan Rammacher,
Ryan Simko, Joe Murphy, Alison Darbee.
Monday Geocache Mon, Jun 14, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
This month we did a "kayak" caching trip on Glen Lake. We found some in the "fen"
(wetland) area and got to one spot that none of us had ever been to. That's the great thing about
geocaching, it brings you to places you never knew existed or could get to! Anyway, this spot was
in a culvert under a bridge that looked like it was on or near the Great Escape. A few
cars went over and they were probably thinking, how did those kayakers get there? Later
three or four more caches were found on the lake section.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Mike
George, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath, Marjory Moeller, Don Thorn.
Evening Paddle Tue, Jun 15, 2010, Maureen Coutant
We continued the Paddle/Picnic theme from the last paddle, but this time on the
section of the Hudson River just south of Hadley. We paddled up to the rocks and got out and
picnicked over looking the water coming from the waterfall and through the chute up river.
This time the super soakers were on hand. Steve and Gen were again the wettest but this
time only Mike went swimming!
Participants : Ray Bouchard, Nancy Citro, Gen, Jim & Mo
Coutant, Ralph DeCristofaro, Sandy Deeb, Mike George, Judy Halstead, Ken Hughes, Morris
(& Joey) Kopels, Licia & Steve Mackey, Joy Muller & Gary McCoola, Becky & Tom Meath,
Andrew & Anne Paolano, Jim Ralston, Maria Rawson, George Sammons.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Jun 16, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
This week the group went up Thomas. There was some talk of doing Cat, but the plan
changed and everyone finished up before the rain started!
Participants : Ralph
DeCristofaro, Kelly Fletcher, Dianne Hurtt, Licia Mackey, Gary Rodd, Kelsey Ross, George
Sammons, Kathy Taylor, Neil Van Dorsten.
High Peak, Mt. Marshal Sat, Jun 19, 2010, Alison Darbee and Joe Murphy
We had good temperatures and a fun hike that included some deep mud pits on our way up
to the top of Marshal.
Participants : Madeline Kowalik-Bova, David Crouse, Seth
Dunn, Susan Keely, Helena Nevarez, Rebecca Smith, Joanne Walczak, and Alison Darbee
Mo-Rodd Mid-week Adventure Wed, Jun 23, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
We had a nice paddle along the Schroon River between Exit 25 and 26, above the rapids
and dam! We were thankful for the clouds which kept us from getting too warm. This was
the first time doing the trip for many of us. We spotted cars so that we could just paddle
with the current. Ahhhh.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Charlie Czech, Mike George, Licia
Mackey, George Sammons, Don Thorn.
Northville Placid Trail Wakely Dam to Lake Durant Sat, Jun 26, 2010, Carolyn Cyr
We opted to spot cars at Wakely Dam and hike from north to south, starting at Lake
Durant. The trail and the weather were dry despite forecasts for rain. A stop at Stephens
Pond and lean-to allowed time for snacks. Soon we joined the newly constructed trail
completed by the ADK Trail Crew last year. We all enjoyed a delighful walk in the woods along
the slightly rolling terrain. We felt a few sprinkles during lunch at the junction of
two streams, just before an impressive new bridge. The day was completed by a short
walk along Cedar River Road - now we have all officially completed this lovely section
of the NP Trail.
Participants : George Baranauskas, Carolyn Cyr, John Devine,
Kendra Pratt, Gary Wilcox.
Evening Paddle Tue, Jun 29, 2010, Maureen Coutant
Wow! I can't believe how many people hadn't paddled the Feeder Canal, yet have
lived in Glens Falls for quite some time! So, this turned out to be the night to give it a
try! It didn't hurt that we had plenty of daylight, water in the canal, and perfect
weather. Except for one branch grabbing Mike's hat and glasses, it was a great trip.
Everyone seemed to enjoy this unique paddling experience and I hope they share the
experience with a friend and do it again.
Participants : David & Mary Alley, Kathy Bradley,
John Caffry, Nancy Citro;Gen, Jim, & Mo Coutant, Charlie Czech, Sandy Deeb, Mike
George, Beth & Steve Gurzler, Ken Hughes, Sarah King, Daisy & John K?, Becky & Tom Meath,
Andrew & Anne Paolano, Gretchen Romanesko, Janet Stephens, Rudy Tomasik.
Mo-Rodd Midweek Adventure Wed, Jun 30, 2010, Maureen Coutant and Gary Rodd
We had great weather for our last outing. We did an easy hike up to the gazebo at Pilot
Knob Lookout and had a little picnic and soaked up the sun. We all shared some goodies and
headed down to the lake for a dip. It was actually too chilly for all but the kids on the trip.
As I write this a week later we're in the midst of a heat wave! What a difference a week
can make! See everyone in the fall!
Participants : Gen and Mo Coutant, Mike George,
Kyra Lombard, Licia Mackey, George & Irene Sammons, Bill Schwarz
July 2010
Pillsbury Fire Tower Wed, Jul 7, 2010, Alison Darbee
Yes we hiked in the heat! We had hazy views from the top but a welcoming breeze
greeted us on the tower landings. We learned some new flowers and bird songs along the way
and I think all had a good time.
Participants : Ray Bouchard Carolyn Cyr, Chris Curtin,
Nathan June, Helena Nevarez, Jamie Newton, Marsha Noble and Alison Darbee
High Peaks, Dial & Nippletop Sat, Jul 10, 2010, Alison Darbee and Joe Murphy
Despite the forecast for rain we headed out to a muggy climb up through Elk Pass to
Nippletop and then over to Dial and out. Some things overheard or that happened on this hike:
Is this the shoulder of Noonmark? Is this the shoulder? This is all bear den is? Now
this has to be the shoulder…I also think someone in our group may or may not have some use
for Preparation H, and another could for sure use a shield from pooping birds! Thank
you to #6646 for knowing and naming all the peaks on view from Whiteface on down the
line! Joke telling and some good ribbing rounded out the day.
Participants : Venus Webb,
Rebecca Smith, Brian Lamos, Madeline Kowalik-Bova, Joe Murphy and Alison Darbee
YMG – Fire Tower Challenge – Kane Mt. Sat, Jul 10, 2010, Jonathan Lane
A nice, easy hike with great company. The rain stopped earlier in the morning, so we
were able to enjoy great weather for our hike. After taking in the beautiful views from
the tower, we returned to the trailhead and headed for the Sawdust Cafe, which was
located near a large swamp and had a special of Steak and Frog Legs! None of us found out if
they really taste like chicken.
Participants : Dan French, Chandra Geremick,
Jonathan Lane, Marsha Noble.
Treadway Mountain Sat, Jul 17, 2010, Reg Prouty
The blueberries were sweet, larger than usual and abundant as a cheerful eager
group made their way to the beautiful summit of Treadway mountain. As the people enjoyed
a leisurely lunch the leader provided background music on his pocket trumpet.
Eight participants-Jim Brown,Susan Keely,Terje Kuusk,Katie Pangia,Reg
Prouty,Mickey Onofrietto,Joanne Walczak,and Nancy Weber.
Nundagao Ridge Sun, Jul 18, 2010, Ellen DuBois and Alt Tel #
Nundagao Ridge Sunday July 18, 2010 Conditions: Beautiful clear day with long
range views of the Dix range, the Great Range, Big Slide, Pitchoff, Cascade, Porter, the
Jay Range, & Whiteface. We maintained a steady, easy pace, stopping often on the rocky
open sections to enjoy the varying views. Everyone seemed to enjoy the perfect weather
& scenery.
Participants : Fred Lieber, Steve Rodriquez, Sandy Yellen, Ray
Boucher, Roxanne Weippert, Michael Marmar.
St. Regis Fire Tower Wed, Jul 21, 2010, Alison Darbee
We started out with a beautiful sunny day and got off the mountain just as it started
to thunder. The views were wonderful up top and we took a leisurely lunch break. I must
say our group had some rather stimulating conversations pretty much all day, even
when we stopped for vittles at the Noonmark Diner, the thought-provoking prattle did
not stop! Thanks to all for making an enjoyable day!
Participants : Carolyn Cyr, Sue
Howard, Katie Pangia, John Synakowski, Alison Darbee.
Linsey Marsh Sat, Jul 24, 2010, Rich Crammond
We saw a mother Hermit Thrush with her little one. There was lots of wildflowers,
red effs and many kinds of mushrooms along the trail. As we approached the open marsh, a
female Mallard took flight. It was a fine day to be on the trail in the Adirondacks. My
thanks to Liz, Gail and my son Rich for hiking along.
Participants : Liz Gee, Gail Epstien,
Rich E. Crammond, Rich D. Crammond
High Peaks, Street and Nye Sat, Jul 31, 2010, Alison Darbee and Joe Murphy
We had a wonderful weather day and a large group! We got lucky as the river was down
for easy crossing and we met some great people along the trail today as well.
Participants : Terje Kuusk, Cole Hickland, Ken Tarullo, Carly Tarullo, Tom Ostrander, David
Crouse, Jackie Cordell, Madeline Kowalik-Bova, Venus Webb, Brian Keech, Susan Keely,
Helena Nevarez, Larry Chasnoff, Howard Chasnoff, Joe Murphy, Alison Darbee
Cascade Peak Sat, Jul 31, 2010, Reg Prouty
It was a great day to be on a high peak with unlimited visibility in all
directions,so clear we could see the fire tower on Hurricane and the weather station on Whiteface
as well as Lake Champlain as clear as a bell with the naked eye. Seven climbers enjoyed
the beautiful summit for over an hour while we waited for two of them to rejoin us from
doing Porter. Kim, Heather, and Jane added their first ever high peak and Marianne did
her first two in the same day. Roy added N0. 2 and three as he did Porter with Marianne.
Patriotic music including both U.S. and Canadian National Anthems was provided by the
leader as well as selections from musical shows on the pocket trumpet. Seven magnificent
participants-Jim Brown,Heather Capobianco,Marianne Hines,Jane Kana,Roy Hoffman, Reg Prouty,
and Roy Hoffman.
August 2010
Mt. Adams Fire Tower Wed, Aug 4, 2010, Alison Darbee
We had a good group of hikers today, lots of talk, lots of photos, and good views from
the tower. Thanks Helena for taking the lead. Anyone figure out what that giant alien,
fluorescent green caterpillar thingy with a horn was yet?
Participants : Charlie Czech, Liz
Gee, Jonathan Lane, Wanda Moceiu, Helena Nevarez, Marsha Noble, John Synakowski, and
Alison Darbee
Hotwater Pond Sat, Aug 7, 2010, Rich Crammond
This was by far a great day to be hiking in the Adirondacks. Low bugs and cool temps
and blue skies above us as we walked along the old railroad bed tracks northward. We
looked in the caves, then hiked to the pond for some real nice views and a snack. Then it was
back to the starting point to end the days outing. The only critters we saw were one
ruffed grouse and three rock hounds.
Participants : Maureen Jones, Laura LaPlanchi,
Rich Crammond
Giant Mountain Sun, Aug 8, 2010, Lorraine MacKenzie
What a great day! Warm at the base but cool on the summit! All but 3 of us opted to go to
Rocky Peak. Views were magnificent from both peaks. On the return trip, everyone
realized just how far up we up climbed since we just kept going down, down, down.
Participants : Erica Halbrook, George Haviland, Shelly Burke, Frank Gandhi, Terje Kuusk,
Joanne Walczak, Susan Keely, Sandy Yellen, Roy Hoffmann, Lorraine MacKenzie
Evening Paddle Tue, Aug 10, 2010, Maureen Coutant
This trip was to see the huge beaver dam near Hudson Point along the Hudson River. We
put in just under the Northway and headed west. Normally we check out the little coves
and don't get too far down the river, but this time we headed straight upstream and
everyone admired the fine work of the busy beavers!
Participants : Ray Bouchard, Mo
Coutant, Mike George, Bill Glendening, Joy Muller-McCoola, George Sammons
Wakely Fire Tower Thu, Aug 12, 2010, Alison Darbee
Overcast, but not so bad as to cloud our views from the tower! Good group, had some
yoga lovers strike a pose on some rocks and I’m sure a certain someone will never forget
her camera again!
Participants : Charlie Czech, Sue Howard, Nathan June, Marsha
Noble, John Synakowski, and Alison Darbee
YMG – Ridge Trail Sat, Aug 14, 2010, Jonathan Lane
Trip canceled.
High Peaks, Cascade and Porter Sat, Aug 21, 2010, Alison Darbee
It was a Scrumdiddlyumptious kind of day. We had a great group of people. Congrats
to Mark on his first 2 High Peaks! Others in the group were out to add to their growing
lists of peaks and several were out to just enjoy and revisit these peaks again! Even
though we shared the trail with a large crowd of adults, kids and dogs, we were still able to
enjoy the great views from both peaks. I also have to mention that there was a great deal of
cupcake envy going on today too. (Jon you could have at least let us have some frosting off of
the wrapper!)
Participants : Caren Crootof, Erica Halbrook, Susan Keely, Jonathan
Lane, Ann Mundy, Mark Rye, Sandy Yellen, Joanne Walczach, and Alison Darbee
South Pond Sat, Aug 21, 2010, Jayne Bouder
We and the loons had this beautiful place all to ourselves on a cloudy to slightly
sunny, coolish day-before the rain. Blue Mountain watched as we visited the rocky
outlet, passed an osprey nest, and found an island site with a nice beach, primitive
chairs, and a table for lunch. A float plane buzzed as we cruised more islands, explored
rock bars, and enjoyed the inlet. The grand finale of toothy rocks strung between
islands that we navigated on the way out had us agreeing that this is one special place. You
were a great, appreciative group! Thank-you for being so easy, and helpful.
Participants : Jayne Bouder, Joe and Karen Burka, Charlie and Linda Czech, Gail Epstein, Bill
Glendening, and Jean Holcomb.
Evening Paddle Tue, Aug 24, 2010, Maureen Coutant
This trip was postponed until 8/31 due to vacation and we wound up going out during
the late August heatwave! The heat caused 3 of us to jump in the Hudson to cool off and a
few others to go wading before we started the paddle. We paddled upstream on the Hudson
from the end of Richardson Street in Glens Falls to the remnants of the booms used a
century ago for logging. The water was like glass and the temperature cooled as we paddled.
Another nice evening out on the water.
Participants : Joanne Armstrong, Maureen Coutant,
Bill Glendenning, Melissa Ientile, Licia and Steve Mackey, Suzanne Pierce, Don
Thorn, Sara Weiskotten
YMG – Sawyer Mt. & Rock Lake Sun, Aug 29, 2010, Jonathan Lane
Trip canceled.

Dippikill Hike Sun, Sep 5, 2010, Allen Altman
The previous week’s smoggy and very hot weather cleared just in time for the start
of a hike. There were a few showers that the cold front brought, but even these were
gone when we reached the summit of Dippikill Mountain, resulting in beautiful views of
the surrounding mountains, High Peaks and Hudson River. The advantages of being an
Outing Leader were reinforced by this hike. Four hikers behind the Leader were stung by
bees, some several times ,but the leader did not notice them at all. They were able to
continue the hike and everyone agreed the day was a good one.
Participants : Allen Altman,
Catherine Altman, Virginia Carluccio, Ralph DeCristofaro, Marion Drastal, Megan
Drastal, Mason Drastal, Mark Janey, Mary Moran, George Zickler, Joyce Zuckler.
High Peak, Haystack Sat, Sep 11, 2010, Alison Darbee and Joe Murphy
Great group and great attitudes! Excellent clear views were had from the top and we
even met Tony Goodwin! Ray O’Conor finished his 46th over on Basin and we knew he was
there as we could see his yellow shirt from Haystack (sorry we couldn’t see Joe running
around with the flag!) We all met up again for the hike out! Great day for all and congrats to
Sue on her first High Peak! And thanks to Bill for helping out too!
Participants : Beau
Breslin, Karen Burka, Joe Burka, David Crouse, Roy Hoffman, Bill Morse, Ray O’Conor, David
Sayer, Bob Sellar, Sue Thompson, Joe Murphy and Alison Darbee.
Moreau State Park Ridge Hike Sat, Sep 11, 2010, Judy Halstead
After arranging the shuttle, ten eager hikers headed up to the ridge from the
southwestern trailhead near the spring following the yellow markers of the Western Ridge
Trail. It was a beautiful day and the view west over the turn in the Hudson was spectacular.
After ups and downs, stream crossings and several quality lookouts, we had lunch at the
last look out over the Hudson before turning on the trail to the Moreau Lake lookout. Reg
entertained us with his trumpet and we watched kayakers below paddle upstream. After enjoying
the lake lookout we headed back to rejoin the Western Ridge trail and our cars at the
northern most trailhead on Spier Falls Road.
Participants :Jim Brown, Reg Prouty, Ralph
DeCristofaro, Ann Svenson, Gust Svenson, Mark Janey, Marsha Noble, Andy Liucci, Randolph
Franklin and trip leader Judy Halstead.
Evening Paddle Tue, Sep 14, 2010, Maureen Coutant
The group decided to paddle upsteam and against a fairly steady wind to start out
our trip. We were once again on the Spier Falls section of the Hudson River, but decided
to go the opposite direction than we normally take. It's always impressive to paddle
up to a dam (not right up to it)!! The wind made for a much easier paddle back to the
launch!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Paul Dietershagen,Bill Glendening, Beth Gurzler,
Sarah King, Licia & Steve Mackey, Joy Muller-McCoola, Scott Nussbaumer, Bob & Sandy
Powell, George Sammons
YMG – Cliffs and Falls Sat, Sep 18, 2010, Jonathan Lane
Wow, what can I say about this hike? With heaping helpings of perfect weather,
beautiful views, and great company, it was incredibly delicious! There were even yummy
cookies and a gourmet cupcake involved!
Participants : Shelly Burke, Charlie Czech,
Karen Darfler, Fatima Hammed, Marianne Hines, Mark Janey, Nathan June, Susan Keely,
Jonathan Lane, Marsha Noble, Joanne Walczak.
Tongue Mountain Range - Northwest Bay Sun, Sep 19, 2010, Lorraine MacKenzie
It was a cloudy day but warm – no bugs & lovely trail next to Lake George. Swimming
would have been an option if it was sunny. The lake was calm on the return on the boat over to
Bolton Landing. Nice day, nice people great way to spend a Sunday.
Participants : Nancy
Weber, Adeline Brym, Jane Kana, Jennifer, Lorraine MacKenzie
Gore Mt. Sat, Sep 25, 2010, Rich Crammond
It was a grand day in the Adirondacks for this hike with cool temperatures and fall
colors. There were two downfalls to this hike: unleashed dogs and i don't think most of the
people enjoyed the hike. They ran up the trail to the summit and back down. Taking the time
to enjoy one's surroundings works for me. Thanks to Rich Myette and Dan Monroe for
waiting at the parking lot for Reg and myself at the end of the hike.
Participants :
Charlotte Smith, John Synakowski, Meg Gallien, Joan Bleikamp, Reg Prouty, Rich Myette,
Susan Howard, Marsha Noble, Chandra Geremick, Jim Frann, Madeline Kowalik Bowa,
Allison Darbee, Dan Monroe, Rich Crammond
Evening Paddle Tue, Sep 28, 2010, Maureen Coutant
Rain postponed this trip to the weekend. Well, it wasn't raining, but it was
certainly windy. Windy enough that the waves caused us to get wet anyway. Luckily the water
was still warm and we knew what we were getting into! We paddled close to shore on the
west side of Lake George around Tea Island to Green Harbour.
Participants : Mo Coutant,
Paul Dietershagen, Jonathan Feinberg, Ely Fuller, Judy Halstead, Eric Krantz
October 2010
More of Moreau Sun, Oct 3, 2010, Bill Schwarz
The monsoons of the previous few days ended in time for a good weekend of hiking, so
four stalwarts got views of Moreau Lake on one side, and the Hudson River's Spier Falls
Dam on the other side of the ridge. Much more water was cascading (loudly) over the dam
than in this leader's previous experience. Moreau's trails take some unexpected
turns at times--following markers can be a challenge--so having four sets of eyes was a
plus on this 8-mile trek.
Participants : Marie Cox, Lynn Mayack, Helena Nevarez, Bill
Schwarz.
Fall Stream Paddle Sun, Oct 3, 2010, Ray Bouchard
I was sorry to have to disappoint the folks that wanted to paddle Fall Stream but I
was afraid that the summer drought would have made the stream un-navigable due to the
many beaver dams. Little Tupper Lake was a delightful alternative and it certainly had
plenty of water. The morning began with a leisurely paddle up the lake as we explored every
nook and cranny that it had to offer. We had an enjoyable lunch at the site of a former home
as evidenced by the two chimneys that still survived. I was a bit disappointed by the
new, low budget outhouse, minus the house. Basically, it was a low box with a lid that
covered a sculpted hole. No privacy and no protection from the elements when you’re in dire
need. I’m sure it’s a way of saving money during these tough times, and we should all be
grateful. The paddle back to our cars was a little more difficult due to the breeze that had
come up but we counted ourselves lucky considering how notorious this lake is for nasty
waves when the wind comes up.

YMG - High Peak - Tabletop Sat, Oct 9, 2010, Jonathan Lane
We had an awesome hike to Indian Falls and up Table Top Mountain! We had a great group
of people and enjoyed sunny, albeit slightly chilly, weather. There were jokes,
trivia, riddles, gourmet cupcakes, different types of chocolate bark, etc. A super fun
day! Fellow outdoor enthusiasts: Stacy Ellis, Erica Halbrook, Susan Keely, Dan Kemp,
Jonathan Lane, Tricia Lockwood, Deyanne Urbahn, Shepard Urbahn, and Joanne Walczak.
Virgin Falls Bushwhack Sat, Oct 9, 2010, Rich Crammond
What a day to be in the Blue Ledge Hudson River area. Blue skies, great fall colors
and three hardy ADKers enjoyed the day. The highlights of this outing were the place
the water flowed underground to the Hudson and seeing all the rafters floating by on
the river. While eating our lunch, Scott spotted a red squirrel swimming in the river
over to our side. It doesn't get better than that! Thanks to Jayne and Scott for hiking
along.
Participants : Jayne Bouder, Scott Cooper, Rich Crammond
Evening Paddle Tue, Oct 12, 2010, Maureen Coutant
We paddled around Glen Lake this evening. It was chilly, but a beautiful evening
out. We saw an osprey a few times, or a few different ospreys? Hard to say!
Participants :
Maureen Coutant, Andrew & Anne Paolano, Sandy Powell, George Sammons
ADK Headquarters Fall Workday Sat, Oct 23, 2010, Maureen Coutant
Thanks to all who dropped by and lended a hand. We got the pine needles, leaves, and
acorns cleaned up in record time due to the many hands and rakes and shovels! We got plenty
of other projects done as well and ADK really appreciates the hard work. Thanks
again. (If you missed it Spring cleanup will be here before you know it -- May 14th.)
YMG - Pharaoh Mt. Sun, Oct 24, 2010, Alison Darbee
It was a great day in the woods, but, sadly, there were no views except for a cloud of
white! There were good conversations and joking around and the leader of this hike may or
may not have backed into a tree at the trailhead!
Participants : Brian Keech, Madeline
Kowalik-Bova, Helena Nevarez, and Alison Darbee
Evening Paddle Tue, Oct 26, 2010, Maureen Coutant
It was our last paddle of the season and we couldn't have asked for better weather.
The temperature was in the 60s with no wind. We paddled to the end (at least for most
kayaks) of the Dunham's Bay outlet and returned with a little fog along the tree line during
the dusk. All we needed was a werewolf howling and some bats to fly over to complete the
Halloween setting. It was a perfect ending to the paddling season. We only had to cancel one
trip this season due to weather and paddled in most of our nearby haunts. If you didn't
make it out this year, please try it next year. We're a very laid back group.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Bill Glendening, Patty Kervin, Sarah King, Becky Meath, Joy
Muller-McCoola, Andrew Paolano, Maria Rawson, George Sammons, Bill Thomas, Laura Von Rosk
YMG - Avalanche Pass Sun, Oct 31, 2010, Jonathan Lane
A great holiday hike with a great group of people! Being Halloween, Jonathan wore a
costume for part of the outing and Jon and Kiki both brought Halloween treats to share with
everyone. It snowed lightly for part of the hike, making some of us control our urges to start
singing Christmas carols - we didn't sing any, since it's Halloween! Hikers: Adeline
Brym, Ben Connel, Terry Fluri, Erica Halbrook, Fatima Hammed, Kiki Kelly, Jonathan
Lane, Alisa Nurminen.

Midweek Jaunt Tue, Nov 2, 2010, Maureen Coutant
I decided to do a hike before the ice and snow covered the mountain tops around Lake
George. We hiked Cat Mountain on a beautiful sunny day. It was actually cooler on the trail
in the shade than it was on the sunny (and windless) summit! We all enjoyed the
spectacular view and each others company. Check out the photos on the website.

YMG - Treadway Mt. Sat, Nov 6, 2010, Alison Darbee
We had a small but good group for this hike. The weather gave us clear views from the
top, but it was a little chilly for lingering too long! We made it around the beavers
handy work at filling the trail with water with out much difficulty and we saw two other
large groups out enjoying the same trail as us, but they were all camping out.
Participants : Brian Keech, Katie Pangia, Helena Nevarez, Alison Darbee
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Nov 9, 2010, Maureen Coutant
It was a test...only a test...well sort of. When you get off the trail how many
people will follow you and for how long? Turns out quite a few, but we didn't go far before we
realized we missed the sharp turn and kept moseying down the trail. We did a little trailwork
when we returned to help others not make the same mistake! We had a great day at the Pilot
Knob Preserve. It had rained a few days prior, making the waterfall above the Pilot Knob
gazebo really flow!

Midweek Jaunt Tue, Nov 16, 2010, Maureen Coutant
This week we went up French Mtn with the owners' permission. The trip is a steady
uphill, but pretty short. There were alot of leaves on the trail, which obscured the rocks
and roots and made for some tricky footing on the way down. Poles were definately
helpful on this trip!
Participants : Karen Azer, Mo Coutant, Susan Howard, Beacky Meath,
and Carol Walkup
YMG - Noonmark Mt. & Diner Sat, Nov 20, 2010, Jonathan Lane
This was a great hike that prepared people for wintery conditions. Micro-spikes
and Stabilicers were put to the test! The wind at the summit was extremely strong and
cold! Everyone made it to the top and back safely, then most people enjoyed a nice warm
meal at the Noonmark Diner.
Participants : Shelly Burke, Marisa Christiano, Ben
Connel, Seth Croy, Stacy Ellis, Joan Ferguson, EJ Holcomb, Jonathan Lane, Joan Marcher,
Matt Melton, Reg Prouty, Derek Pruitt, Lavinia Smith, Joanne Walczak.
Barton High Cliffs Loop Sat, Nov 20, 2010, Jayne Bouder
We made the loop, at a semi-leisurely pace; there was alot of wind, around this
beautiful, awesome place, and it got sunnier from cloudier. An owl and an elephant saw us in,
and the full moon saw us home. Great day, great time, great group!
Participants ; Jayne
Bouder, Scott Cooper, Rich Crammond, Liz Gee, Jenifer Jones, Rich Myette, Lin Neil, Joe
Paszko, and Tim and Mary Ward.
Crane Mt. Sun, Nov 21, 2010, Ray Bouchard
The temps were in the mid-20’s when we left the cars, but we warmed up pretty quickly
as we began our climb to the summit. The trail was icy in many places but we were able to
manage without the use of crampons. We reached the summit just in time to have lunch and
bask in the warmth of a bright blue sky. After lunch, Jeff Nadler was kind enough to give
the amateur photographers in our group some pointers as we attempted to take pictures
of the surroundings. By the time we had made our descent to the pond, we saw some folks
we had passed earlier build a fire on the far shore. There was some mention at the
summit that they were going for a swim, but no one took them seriously. Well guess what? As
soon as the fire was rip-roaring, two of them stripped down to their BVD’s and jumped in.
Unfortunately, they were in and out so quickly no one had time to take a picture. After the
excitement died down, we decided not to return by way of the Notch trail and instead let Rich
guide us down the seldom used trail that begins by the Crane Pond outlet. The good news is
there was far less ice in this area. Other than the steepness of the trail, the going
wasn’t too bad. On the way down, we paused for a moment to read the inscription on the plaque
that honors Paul Schaeffer and reflect on just how much this man had done for all of us. As
we made our way back to the cars Rich pointed out the entrance to the caves that begin
where Putnam Brook flows under a natural stone bridge. We peeked in, but no one
volunteered to slither down the icy stream to explore the caves in more detail. For that we’ll
just have to return in the summer or go to the internet to see the pictures that others
have taken inside the caves. It was a grand day made even better by sharing it with a great
bunch of people.

Rich Myette, Terry Fluri, Paula Franchan, Sandy Yellen, Jeff Nadler and the
indefatigable Eberhardt Burkowski.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Nov 23, 2010, Maureen Coutant
This week we had to do a short walk since my daughter had a 1/2 day of school. Thus, we
headed to the Harry Betar Walkway along the Hudson River in South Glens Falls. This is a
great spot that I'm always glad to share with people. It's a gem in the Glens Falls area! A
few of us warmed up with coffee at Rockhill afterwards.
Participants : Carol Collins,
Mo Coutant, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Patty Kervin, Sarah King, Becky Meath, Bill
Schwarz, Don Thorn, & Edna Van Dorston
Turkey Trot # 12 Thu, Nov 25, 2010, Rich Crammond
I think we worked up a holiday hunger with the temperature about 18 above zero at the
start of the hike so we kept moving along with a few rest stops. It was real nice to hike
along with people I haven't seen in awhile. We saw a nice buck along the trail and the other
wildlife viewing was good also. Another great ADK outing.
Participants : Don Landen, Bill
Schwarz, Molly, Joe and Steve Bederian, Rich Myette, Marsha Noble, Fran Suarez, Kim Wood,
Colleen M.Coulter, Herb Phillips, Rich Crammond
Hadey Mt at Sunset Sat, Nov 27, 2010, Jean Holcomb
Due to the cold, snow and general "fear of the dark," this trip did not draw the crowd
I was hoping for. For the seven of us who did the climb, the sunset was spectacular and
the summit was a winter wonderland of frosted trees sparkling in the afternoon sun. To
be fair, it was very cold on top, but fun nonetheless. Next time, we try it in Spring!
Participants : Jean Holcomb, EJ Holcomb, Merisa Bradley, Sue Howard, Pat Desbiens, Jack Whitney
and Brian (last name unknown at press time)
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Nov 30, 2010, Maureen Coutant
This week we hiked at Moreau State Park. We walked around the lake and Mud Pond and
had a great time out. We avoided the rain that came in the afternoon. We were treated to
the discovery that the new warming hut is open during the week! It had a nice fire going
and we only wished that we had packed lunch and could have stayed there to eat. Next time
you go, plan on ending your day there!

Midweek Jaunt Tue, Dec 7, 2010, Maureen Coutant
This week we meandered on the old trails of the Wilton Wildlife Preserve. A small
section of the trails were closed for logging and we ran into some heavy equipment on the
trail. One piece was operated by their volunteer trail groomer. He said they were out
there removing some of the stumps from the trail that he always hits while grooming. If
you haven't been here to XC ski, give it a try. He does a wonderful job with the trails.
Also, they were erecting a firetower on the property when we visited. See if you can find
it!

& Joe Kelterborn, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath, Jim Purdy, Jim Ralston,
George & Irene Sammons, Bill Schwarz, Carol Walkup.
Wilton Wildlife Park Sat, Dec 11, 2010, Rich Crammond
This hike was a real good one because the weather was great and we had a nice dusting
of snow for this holiday-time-of-year. A nice forest to walk through. The company
was good and we were enjoying our surroundings. We didn't see any critters. They must
have been sleeping in! Happy holidays to all my hiking buds.
Participants : Alan and Liz
Gee,Laurie LaFond,Greg Flrong, and Rich Crammond.
*YMG* - *Fire Tower* - Spruce Mt. Sun, Dec 12, 2010, Jonathan Lane
Canceled due to poor weather.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Dec 14, 2010, Maureen Coutant
We had to postpone until Thursday and decided on a quick walk through Coles Woods in
Glens Falls. There wasn't enough snow on the trails to damage them for skiing. It felt
good to get back there. Now we just need some snow so we can return and XC ski under the
lights some night!
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath, and Gary
Rodd.
Calamity Mountain Sat, Dec 18, 2010, Jayne Bouder
Pretty new snow draped the sticky forest, blowdown, and struggling new growth,
and it all got deeper and thicker as we struggled for the summit. Never mind meandering
to find overlooks- it took us three and one half hours to go 7/10 mile! We got back to
Calamity Pond after dark and walked back in brilliant moonlight. Thank you Tom, for really
wanting to do this!
Participants : Jayne Bouder, Nate June, and Tom Snyder.
Black Mt. Fire Tower Sat, Dec 18, 2010, Alison Darbee and Ryan Simko
We had a good, fun loving group today and fluffy snow to tramp around in with just our
micro-spikes. The views were clear at the top, the woods were sugar coated in white, and lots of
photos were taken!
Participants : Ray Bouchard, Liz Gee, Brian Keech, Terje Kuusk, Ann
Mundy, Marsha Noble, Katie Pangea, Ryan Simko and Alison Darbee.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Dec 21, 2010, Maureen Coutant
As suspected, I was behind in my Christmas prep, so we moved it ahead to Monday to
leave the rest of the week for stress! We had a nice quick walk around Moreau Lake and then
cookies and hot beverages in the warming hut. We love that place!
Participants : Maureen
Coutant, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Bill Schwarz, and Don Thorn.
Santanoni Great Camp Sun, Dec 26, 2010, Ray Bouchard
Four hardy souls chose to brave the cold and join me for a 10 mile ski trip into the
Great Camp on Newcomb Lake. The temps were in the upper teens all day; however, the lack of
wind helped us stay warm, provided we didn't stand still for too long. The snow
conditions were great with about 4" of fresh powder on 6 - 8" of packed base. Put it all together
and it made for some fast runs on the downhill sections especially if you used waxable
skis. There were several others on the trail that day so lunch, however brief, became a
social affair. The long, gentle climb to the height of land helped to re-warm our
extremities so we could enjoy the glide back out to the car.
Participants : Rich Macha, Carolyn
Cyr, Jim Dixon, Terri Fluri, and Ray Bouchard.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Dec 28, 2010, Maureen Coutant
We postponed this trip to New Years Eve! What a great way to close out the year. We
didn't have enough snow for snowshoes or skis and didn't really need grippers, just snow
boots for a walk into Inman Pond. We had three kids join us during the holiday break for a
geocaching walk. We were off to a slow start when we couldn't find the 1st one at the trailhead,
but the 2nd one didn't take long and the last one takes you to a beautiful overlook of the
pond. The kids did great and the adults were very patient and the weather was gorgeous!
Participants : Sammy (Geoflyer) Brayton(8), Mo (GeoMo)& Gen (GeoGen)Coutant(8), Bruce
(Bunker) Cushing, Sarah (GeoQueen) King, George (GPS) Sammons, Gretchen (LASAR Lady)
Stark and Yael (Mtn Goat).
