Annual Buck Mountain New Year's Day Hike   Thu, Jan 1, 2015, Reg Prouty and Bob Aspholm  
- Before the hike we met 2 rangers who were there to cut a new trail which was recommended and proposed years ago by Jack Freeman to alleviate the extreme erosion that has occurred over the last few decades on the main trail to Prospect from Lake George Village. They told us to go ahead and follow their newly cut trail on the return trip. The state is expected, they said, to make the 'Jack Freeman' trail an officially marked trail up Prospect Mountain. We found two picnic tables out of the wind and had our lunch and our usual musical 'Auld Lang Syne' celebration before returning to the recreation area parking lot. 8 participants: Congratulations to young Lauren Trackey for leading the pack with her youthful enthusiasm most of the day, Mike and Diana Trackey, Mark Seymour, Mike Dashnaw, Jayne Bouder, Bob Aspholm, and Reg Prouty.

Giant via Roaring Brook   Sat, Jan 3, 2015, Bill Morse
- Starting out on the Roaring Brook trail it was a little cold, but no wind. But we warmed up quickly with the steady ascent that Giant offers. Icy in spots, but easily navigable with microspikes. (Although a couple of us realized our spikes are pretty worn out.) Gaining elevation, there was more snow and, with the cold clear day, great views. Short stay on top because there was some wind there. Good trip down although one or two of us learned not to butt slide on bumpy steep sections of ice. Ice has little give, much more fun in the snow. Monthly Monday Geocache   Mon, Jan 5, 2015, Sarah King
- Well, the frigid temperatures and wind didn't keep four hearty souls from geocaching today! After meeting at Panera, we drove to the The Lynn LaMontagne Schumann Preserve at Pilot Knob, formerly known as the Pilot Knob Ridge Preserve. We immediately donned our micro spikes as the parking lot was like an ice skating rink! After bundling up, we signed in (and found the geocache in the kiosk) and headed up the trail. Micro spikes were essential wear this day as the trail was all ice. We all agreed we couldn't have done it without them. We made it up to the gazebo in 45 minutes, admired the view fairly quickly (the wind was whipping) and headed up the blue trail toward the waterfall and the 3 new caches there. Our first cache, Pilot Knob view, was at a lesser known overlook. We found the cache hanging in a tree and moved on to the next one. The next one was right on the blue trail. One wouldn't notice it unless you were looking up. The last cache was on the waterfall loop. We followed the trail northeast where it rounds a bend and makes a short steep rock scramble up to an elevated area. We searched until we found the right hemlock that the cache was hanging on. We finished geocaching and continued on to the top of the falls and continued around the loop and back down to the gazebo, where Licia brought out some delicious muffins. We all agreed seconds would be eaten in the car. As always, great day out with some very dedicated friends/geocachers! Participants: Sarah King, Mo Coutant, Licia Mackey, Todd Earl.

East Dix, Macomb, and South Dix/Grace Pk   Sat, Jan 10, 2015, Steve Mackey and Rick Lennox  
- This ended up being a really cold day, which made it hard to stay together. We ended up splitting up a couple of times, once by choice, once by accident. All ended well, and the last head lamps came bobbing out around 8:30. We had to break trail going down Lillian Brook, but it was mostly route finding, not really moving a lot of snow. When we were in the wind, it was very cold, and any exposed skin was in danger of frost bite. At one point there was some confusion about which Dix had been renamed Grace, so we had to go by the old names to avoid confusion. A hardy group of eleven. - This week we had gotten a little bit of snow, so I decided if it was skiable anywhere south of Glens Falls it would be at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve (WWP). It had just enough snow and some previous tracks to follow. A Saratoga County employee told us there wasn't enough snow to groom the trails, but it worked for us! The WWP was new to some and great to get back to for the others. Hopefully, we'll get a little more snow and can get back again! Glad to see the single digit temps didn't keep everyone away! - This week we walked along the Skidmore North Woods trail system. The hardest part was finding each other! Who would have guessed there was construction at the end of the road that leads to the trailhead. So, the GF car pools parked in one lot and most of the others parked in another one...with a few more finding their own spots. Eventually, all but Paul found each other. We explored the Pit of Doom (old well), the Tee Pee and Long House, and almost the lost ski area...from afar. Microspikes were the perfect footwear for the day! They're expensive but we've gotten the most use out of them the past few years. Afterwards a dozen of us took over the sectional couch and chairs at Uncommon Grounds. Hudson Crossing / Happy New Year Outing   Sat, Jan 24, 2015, Rich Crammond
- This was not a real good day for spotting eagles but we did see one metal one with its wings spread out on top of a high pole. Does that count? Anyway, it was nice to hike with hiking buds who I've shared many outings with and who have taught me some things about ADK outings along the way. Highlights of this outing were seeing many goldeneye and mallard ducks, bittersweet vines like never seen before, acting like actor Jimmy Stewart on the Dix bridge, and hiking with new ADK participants like Kathie Horn. PYRAMID & GOTHICS   Sat, Jan 24, 2015, Steve Mackey
- During Christmas break we were visiting friends in Burlington and while shopping in an outdoor gear store, one of the employees recognized me from the PCT. Molly (trail name Frizzle) had also thru hiked this year, and we agreed to try to get together and hike something in the Adirondacks this winter. So Molly, her sister Callie, and Callie's husband Sean came over from Vermont and met us at the trail head. For the first time ever (since I've been leading this trip), everybody actually cross country skied. The conditions were a little icy, but as we gained elevation they got better and better. The trail from Lower Ausable Lake was well packed and though we carried snowshoes we never used them. Micro spikes were useful and were the footwear of choice. The views were spectacular and the summit wasn't too cold nor too windy. On the way down Heather and I tried out our new 'Slope Sliders' and had a rapid out of control descent. Luckily all turned out well, but I think in hindsight that Pyramid might be a little too steep for our new toys. Since we had such good skiers, we whizzed out and were at the cars around 4:30. - This week we did our annual mixed event near Cronins. Some walked the trails and others xc skied on the golf course. It was a beautiful bright blue day with the sunshine making the new fluffy snow sparkle. At the end we met up and did a little jaunt towards the river and on the way back Irene and Gary made snow angels. We also passed a sign that said 'Men in Trees' and another sign earlier that Read 'Hudson River 16?? - 2009' I can't remember the beginning date. But both signs made us wonder and gave us plenty to talk about! (Not that we needed more material!) Afterwards we all went to the Willows in Wsbg for a bite to eat. The Santanonis   Sat, Jan 31, 2015, Wayne Richter and Mike Fuller  
- We had a gorgeous, though windy and cold, day with lots of spectacular views in the clear air. With a few inches of new snow, a group of four the day before and a couple of people ahead of us, the trail was well broken out. Upon arriving at the ridge top, Mike broke out his delicious coffee brownies. While we snacked, some of us caught sight of a pine marten. With a few people leaving packs behind, we headed over to Panther, with great views. Upon our return, Mike found some aluminum foil on the ground outside his pack. Opening the pack, he discovered that a marten had wiggled its way inside and made a good start on his sandwich. We then made the long descent towards Couchsachraga. The horrid mud swamp of summer was now an open, sunny expanse, out of the wind, and a perfectly pleasant place for lunch. Being one with the pine marten, Mike ate the entire remains of his sandwich. Having thus bonded with the pine marten on a day with a nearly full moon visible well before dark, we're pretty sure that Mike is now a were-marten. Watch for him to sprout fur and pointy ears, and start chasing down squirrels and raiding hiker's packs on the next full moon hike. Up to Couchsachraga, then back down to the swamp where we had excellent views of an inquisitive pine marten. We stopped again at Times Square where Wayne handed out chocolate chip and dried cherry cookies (Mike and Wayne are full service hike leaders) and we watched yet another pine marten. Then it was on to our final peak. As we approached Santanoni, the wind rose and became bitter. We were surprised to see four people who had passed us earlier coming up the Santanoni Express trail. They had spent a fruitless hour trying to find the path after it had drifted over and decided to come back up and return by the Bradley Pond trail. We made a brief summit stop at Santanoni before deciding that, with a half hour of good daylight remaining, we should also take the long but certain way back. The open ridge back to Panther in the setting sun was glorious. As we headed down, the moon was so bright that we often could turn off our headlamps and walk by moonlight alone. - With 10 inches or so of fresh snow, the ski trails at Crandall Park were calling to us! We hadn't been there yet this season and you couldn't have asked for more perfect conditions. The groomer had been out and was actually out on the trails while we were finishing up. We had such a good time, some of us decided to return the next evening to ski under the lights. Crandall is such a magical place especially during a light snow at night! We're so lucky to have a lighted course through the woods right in the middle of our little city! Even luckier when we have snow! Carolyn tried out the snowshoe trail which was a little less traveled at this point in the day. - We had a few cancellations at the last minute, due to the cold weather forcast. We still ended up with four hikers and got Rick his 44th winter peak. The trail was broken, which surprised me, because we had gotten a big storm on the preceding Monday. We wore snowshoes the whole way, but passed a couple of hikers on the way out, that were only wearing micro spikes. The weather was cold, but not overly so. Things got a little nippy at the summit, but we ducked into the trees, to get out of the wind. We had an awesome butt slide for about a quarter mile leaving the summit. Since we had such an early start we were back at the cars around 1:00. We all headed to the Ausable Inn for beer and burgers, for lunch instead of dinner. - This week we hiked up to Berry Pond from the Lake George Rec trails. Many in the group had tried to get there other times and either took the wrong turn or ran out of time, so I was on a mission to show them the way to the pond. There are a few new signs that make it a little easier, but knowing to leave the trail and walk up the logging/snowmobile trail is key to finding your way to the pond. It's a steep trail from the rec trails to that road which was great for warming up on this single digit day. I was surprised that so many hardy souls showed up on this day when it way 20 below at day break! - It was a beautiful midwinter day for this easy hike in the woods around Rush Pond. We followed a mostly broken trail but took a few less broken to get a little closer to the pond a few times. Jane was doing her usual photoshoot and took many candid shots in the woods and near the pond. I hope the connecting trail to the Queensbury cross-country trail system is marked by spring or summer as I still haven't correctly identified it yet. It would make a good traverse hike in the summer or fall. Three hikers: Reg Prouty, Jayne Bouder, and Mike Dashnaw.

- This week we skied along the Wilkinson Trail at the Saratoga Battlefield. It was the first time along the trail for some in the group and a pleasant return for others. There was a dusting of snow recently and some snow blown onto the trail which made for nice conditions. The trail has a few hills and you have to cross the road a few times which is a bit challenging, but it was nice to get out and enjoy the varied terrain. The skiers at the back of the pack were treated to hearing a barred owl call to us. Participants: Doug & Judy Beers, Mo Coutant, Erin Ingrid, Licia & Steve Mackey, Jim Ralston, Gwenne Rippon.

Monthly Geocache   Mon, Mar 9, 2015, Sarah King
- This month we traveled down to Schodack Island State Park. We were here to find 11 winter friendly caches placed by NYS Parks Saratoga - Capital Region in their winter series of caches located in three of our beautiful New York State Parks: Moreau, Grafton Lake State Park, and Schodack Island State Park. Trails were hard packed and grippers were used for an easy walk on these flat trails. We found all 11 caches, placed just off the trails, easily and even found two more older caches. Once again, we were treated to homemade snacks by Licia and were pleasantly surprised to find the heated bathrooms, complete with hot running water, open in the parking area. Total distance was 4 miles. Great outing as usual with a great group of people. Participants: Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Steve Gray and Diane Demetriou.

- This week I added in a trip, when I couldn't make it on the Monday Geocache trip. We joined up with Peter from the Crooked Canes to explore the tupelo trees in the Lincoln State Forest in Greenfield Center. The snowshoe trip tooks us through the woods past landmarks like the 'handle tree,' 'kissing tree,' the tupelos, an abandoned? heron rookery, and an active porcupine feeding grounds. It was great to see the area and all the cool landmarks, see old friends and make new ones! A great outing! Thanks Peter! - We didn't have much green on if any...but that was ok, since the weather forced us to do our outing on Thursday and not on St. Patrick's Day! It was chilly (teens or 20s and wind on top to make it feel much colder!), but it was a sunny day. We had a nice clear view of nearby Gore and the far off high peaks. None of us had hiked Moxham Mtn, but it had been on our to do list since seeing it highlighted in ADK's Adirondac Magazine a year or two ago. The trail was trampled down, so we only needed our microspikes, but you had to be careful to stay on the trail or you would occasionally post-hole. We decided this was a great time to hike this trail since without any foliage you had views through the woods to the northeast. We had almost as many people meet us along the trail as were on the hike. A few ADKrs missed the car pool and we met them on our way down (Jayne, Rich, and Gigi). Through Ski - South Meadows - Tahawas   Sun, Mar 22, 2015, Steve Mackey
- We had a few people cancel at the last minute, so we made it an unofficial trip, but still went. Since there was only three of us, we decided to do an out and back trip, and only take one car. We picked the Upper Works trailhead because we all have skied many times from the Loj/South Meadows trailhead. It is pretty much all uphill from the south so we did most of our work early and got the benefit of our hard labor on the way back. Driving up the Northway we were wondering if conditions would be any good, but as we got close to the start, it began to look more and more wintry. As we left the car, it was 6 degrees with fresh snow from the night before. There were a few Forest Rangers at the trailhead getting ready to drive snowmobiles into Flowed Lands due to an ongoing rescue (though it ended up that they didn't need to). The skiing conditions (other than being pretty cold) were about as good as they get. We had a good kick and glide, and the downhills were fast, but not too fast. It was so good that we kept going and eventually went all the way to Marcy Dam before we turned around. It made for approximately a twenty mile day. On the way back from Flowed Lands it is around 4.2 miles, and I would guess that about 3 of them were free, because all we needed to do was turn. Participants: Maureen & Tim Laskey, Steve Mackey.

- This week we stayed close by and did an easy walk along the Harry Betar Walkway in So. Glens Falls. Although it's now well into the later 1/2 of March...the 'out like a lamb' still hasn't happened. But it was a beautiful chilly day with temps in the high teens and twenties while we were out. We saw some mallard ducks along the Hudson (clear of ice except in the bays and about 6 ft from the shore) and a woodpecker right along the trail who wasn't too concerned about our group and just kept on pecking! Afterwards some of us headed into GF to Spot Coffee. - This is a hard time of year to plan activities in the area. Will there be snow? ice? slush? Who knows! Even a couple of days ahead of time. So this week we went with a safe option and walked in Saratoga State Park. To go on the trails we would have needed to use our microspikes, so we opted for a 'tour of the parking lots'! We walked around the Little Theater, to the golf course club house, to the trail parking, then around the car museum, into SPAC, then returned to follow the path to Rt 50 and cross over to the Y. This is where you can continue on another trail to the Beekman section of Saratoga, but we had enough by that time and headed back. Thanks to Steve's new app, we knew we'd gone just over 4 miles. Afterwards some of us headed into Saratoga for lunch! - We did a great walk along the Feeder Canal from Hudson Falls to Fort Edward, but on the 14th instead of the 7th as advertised. Some in the group had never been along this section. We stopped to check out the locks which are always impressive. Then down the hill and followed the trail to the right at the T. We didn't see too many birds, but we were surprised to see a bunch of turtles out and soaking up the rays! Check out the photo gallery on the website! On one branch in the water we counted 16 painted turtles and many others along the way. Very cool! Tongue Mt. Range   Sat, Apr 11, 2015, Bill Morse
- Good hike on a windy day. Much better than the cold of winter. Some ice and snow on a few sections and lots of blow down over the last 2-3 peaks. Highlight of the day was Abbey picking up the scent of a bear cub. Fortunately no mother bear around as we let the cub get well ahead of us. Most of us took turns taking a fall on ice, mud or blowdowns. No injuries other than to the ego. Group included Karen Burka, Colleen Downing, Eric Kimmelman, David White, Bill Morse and Abbey.

Saratoga Battlefield   Sat, Apr 11, 2015, Rich Crammond
- This was a super nice day to be out there. We got a little muddy and wet but I think everyone enjoyed the outing overall. Along the way were frogs singing to their mates and we could see where winter took its toll on the deer population. We learned first hand that nature gives and takes for sure. Highlights of this outing were seeing other parts of the park and hiking along with hardy outdoor people. Thanks to Tom Burns for some local history along the way. It just doesn't get any better. Geocache   Mon, Apr 13, 2015, Sarah King
- We had a beautiful day at Amy's park in Bolton Landing. Everyone must have spring fever as we had probably our largest group ever with 10 people. We made our way to the parking area on Padanarum Road, which was quite soft and muddy. There was still ice and some snow on the trails so several of us decided to wear grippers. We had 7 caches on the new blue trail that we were looking for. We found all with no problem, making a loop which brought us out further down on Padanarum Road. We then walked back on the road. Several of us stopped to grab two additional caches on Trout Lake Road at another corner of Amy's Park and at the canoe portage access. Trout Lake Road was actually drier and in better condition to drive on. A shorter trip than we often take but a great time nevertheless. Rainbow Falls   Sat, Apr 18, 2015, Nick Ringelberg
- Pleasant sunny day hike, 60's, no black flies, up the Ausable Club Road, to the Lower Lake dam and beyond to Rainbow Falls, where we were able to get pleasantly sprayed at the base of the falls by the voluminous spring flow. Still a little ice on the final mile of the road and some snow prevented us from exploring on the side trails to view the many other waterfalls in the vicinity, but we did venture a little off the road to admire Artists Falls and the Flume on Gill Brook. 10 happy hikers: Jayne Bouder, Ray Boucher, Zach Hotaling, Marty Hotaling, Ben Legg, Robert Morrissey, Tom McLenithan, Greta VanSlylle, Dave White, and Nick Ringelberg.

- This week we hiked around at the bottom of Buck Mountain in the Stewarts Ledge area. I'd been there a couple of days before and heard the wood frogs chirping? cackling? right in the wet areas near the parking lot, but no luck on this day. We think it might have been too cold! We did have a nice hike to see Frankenpine and then up along the ledge to check on the ravens who seemed to be doing fine. Afterwards we bushwhacked back to the trail. Great day out! North Saddle & South Bay Diameter   Sat, Apr 25, 2015, Jayne Bouder
- A cold forecast quickly whittled our group down to 5 enthusiasts. We hiked to North Saddle on Saturday, camped out overnight, and paddled to the Diameter on Sunday. Great group! Great time! Tongue Mt.   Sat, Apr 25, 2015, Tom Ellis
- A perfect day to do our annual trail cleaning/maintenance work on the northern end of Tongue Mountain including the Deer Leap Trail. This year's work was, by far, the most extensive blowdown since we adopted this trail. With several new volunteers, and a few of the old guard, the entire section was cleared. Many thanks to all those who gave of their time and effort. - With an upcoming workday at ADK HQs, I resorted to bribery! Come do 1/2 hour of work (raking) and then we'll head up the backside of Prospect and have less to do on the workday! I had 13 members willing to be bribed! We got a section of the yard raked and the garden cleaned out and then headed up to the Lake George Rec trails just up the road. The trail is unmarked once you leave the stream that you walk along until turning at an acute angle to head up the moutain. It wasn't too hard to follow the beaten down leaves on the way up...but you have to pay attention on the way down! A few in the group learned that, but followed good hiking safety and stopped and turned around when they realized they weren't actually on the trail any longer! There was lots of blowdown on the steepest section. We cleared out what we could, but we needed Steve with his axe! It looks like some clearing was done near the top, so maybe they'll get to that section soon. Great day out! Spring Bird Walk - Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park   Sat, May 2, 2015, Rich Speidel
- We were blessed with pleasant weather - sunny and calm - ideal for observing birds. Some of the best bird action at Camp Saratoga is often near the parking lot and adjacent pond. As we started out, a green heron flew overhead. Moments later, a female hooded merganser landed in the pond directly in front of us ... nice close-up view! One of the first kingbirds of spring was also seen at the pond. Some of the birds expected in early May were not found; their arrival likely delayed by the long winter and cool early spring. - We had a beautiful day to head to Cat Mountain. We started out parking in a parking lot just past the Bolton Water Works Supply off Edgecomb Pond Road. We followed this trail in and around the backside of the pond and found 6 caches that we had planned on finding. We decided that we might as well head to the summit and look for a few other caches along the way that several of us needed. We had a funny moment when we discovered after looking for a long time for a geocache that it was on the ground under Licia's backpack the whole time! Hurricane Mt.   Sat, May 9, 2015, Bill Morse and Heather Webb  
- A rather ominous start with Alex's car breaking down. Along with lots of bugs on the highway, but thankfully no bugs on the trail. It was a bit hot and humid which meant no snow. Hurricane has a great view on the top and it had a nice welcoming breeze, but it was a little hazy so things in the distance were tough to see. We went up the old fire tower observer's trail which does not seem to get much use. For most on the hike this was the first time on this trail. A great new experience. On the hike were Ian Lawrie, Garrison Hughes, Neal Van Dorsten, Alex Levine (did not make the trail head because of car trouble), Joanne Walczak, Julie Batchelder, Colleen Downing, Intaba Liff-Anderson, Heather Webb, Bill Morse, and Sidney (the hot dog).

Falls Along Gill Brook   Sat, May 9, 2015, Nick Ringelberg
- On a sunny day, 80 degrees at the trailhead (but 10 degrees cooler along the streams!), with no black flies and just a few patches of ice left on some of the shady parts of the stream beds, 7 energetic hikers had sensory overload while viewing crystal clear spring water flow at Pyramid, Beaver Meadows, Artist, and Rainbow Falls, and dozens of other unnamed cascades on Gill Brook and the Ausable River. With a side trip to Indian Head and Fish Hawk Cliffs (where we saw an Osprey dive!), we basked in the sun on the overlook of the Ausable Lakes with the Great Range as a backdrop. Fabulous day with a great hiking group composed of Jayne Bouder, Mary Grueniger, Rose Michaels, Dave Michaels, Klaus Sommerlaite, Dave White and Nick Ringelberg.

Spring Bird Walk - Pack Forest, Warrensburg   Sat, May 9, 2015, Rich Speidel
- Sunny, warm weather made for a pleasant outing and a variety of birds, including least flycatcher, broad-winged hawk, and solitary sandpiper. A highlight for our group was seeing the evening grosbeak, which can be missed from year to year. We also saw a pair of loons on Pack Forest Lake and identified 13 species of warblers. Tuesday Trek   Tue, May 12, 2015, Maureen Coutant
- This week we did something new and drove up to the Crown Point State Historical site to check out the bird banding station which volunteers have been operating for 40 years! They set up back behind the ruins of the English fort near the hawthorne bushes which were described as looking like McDonalds to the birds as they fly by during the migration. So they swing by and some get caught in the mist nets. They are identified, info taken, band put on and then released! Lynne and Nancy both had the honors of releasing a bird this year. We also checked out a lime kiln ruin, an amazing amount of columbine in bloom, and fossils in the rocks down by the water. Of course, we saw the ruins of the forts and drove over to the lighthouse, but we couldn't climb up it! Great day out! - It was a great day to be on an Adirondack trail. The falls still had a nice flow of water from winter's runoff. There were many people on this trail to come to a nice spot. Reg played a couple of tunes on his pocket horn and then we hiked it back to the trailhead. Just a great day in the woods. The black flies weren't invited but they tagged along anyway. - This trip is always an adventure and the toughest trip of the season. But we start out with it since it's the best time to try to paddle from Lake Luzerne to Second Lake. The first few years we didn't make it. But this year like the past couple, we've found our way. There are twists and turns that sometimes lead to dead ends or this year a beaver dam that half of us crossed just to find out that it was the wrong way! Oh well. It's always fun trying to figure out how to get around the obstacles. It was a chilly day, but with the exertion of paddling we didn't feel the cold except while loading and unloading. - This week we hiked Hadley Mountain. We were afraid we'd miss all the wildflowers, but there were still some for us to stop and see which gave us a chance to catch our breath! We saw pink lady slippers, bunch berries, blue bead lily, Canada mayflower, and jack in the pulpit among others. Once we relaxed at the top for awhile, we headed over to the north side of the mountain for more views and to check out the 'rock garden' creatures. We added a few of our own. Go see if you can find some turtles, a camel, and a rabbit/dog/sheep? There were many opinions on what the last one looked like! Mountain Bird Hike - Blue Mountain   Wed, May 27, 2015, Rich Speidel
- We enjoyed the morning climb up Blue Mountain and stopped often to hear the various bird songs in the forest. It was interesting to hear the songbirds change from the lower to higher elevations. A highlight was the heavenly flute-like song of the Swainson's thrush. Ten warbler species were heard from trailhead to summit, including blackpoll warblers above 3,000 feet; magnolia and yellow-rumped warblers were also seen. We had good views from the fire tower before quickly heading down to avoid an approaching thunderstorm. Despite some rain on the return hike, we completed a nice day with 21 bird species on the wooded slopes of the mountain. 8 participants: Laura Fiske, Kate Foley, Denis Foley, Bruce Goodale, Bo Harris, Mark Janey, Rick Jannett, Rich Speidel.

Roostercomb and Snow   Sat, May 30, 2015, Wayne Richter and Leighann Helson  
- Our hike began at the Roostercomb parking lot. We skirted the swamp and then entered beautiful hardwood forest. With a well built trail, nearly mud free due to lack of rain, we had a fine climb. Although not a hot day, it was very humid so we made frequent stops to keep hydrated. Steve and Dalton climbed on to the big erratic at the four way junction with the trails to Roostercomb, Hedgehog and Snow. Although getting up was hard, getting down was perhaps even trickier. We stopped at the view on the way to Roostercomb, then went on to the summit for lunch. We sunned ourselves on the rocks and enjoyed the cloud formations, including the rain shower that enveloped Marcy and passed harmlessly to our south. Then it was back down and along the lightly used trail from Roostercomb to Snow and up to Snow. We had more sun on the rocks, great views, a group photo and chocolate chip cookie bars. We had just a bit of a shower a few minutes before reaching the trailhead, but got out well before the rain and thunderstorms moved in. Mountain Bike ride near Whiteface Mtn.   Sat, Jun 6, 2015, Steve Mackey
- It ended up that just Jim Coutant and I made the trip (and I had to bribe Jim by letting him use my other mountain bike). We found the main trails near Springfield Road fairly easily. When we got there, there was only one other rider, but by the time we left, there were about 200 riders. The trails were well constructed, and in general, of intermediate ability. However there was a trail that climbed a small mountain that if you were able to ride completely up and down, I would consider you an expert. We had to do a little 'hike a bike' to get up. After lunch we tried to find the trails closer to the Whiteface ski area. We found the Poorman's Downhill and that pretty aptly described it, except before we could go downhill, we had to go uphill. The main group of Whiteface trails was closer to the ski area, so we'll have to scout them out next time. We also took a little hike and checked out the Flume, on the Ausable River. Since we still had the time and the energy and were close by, we also drove to the other side of Whiteface (in the car) and hiked up Catamount Mountain. I had just read an article in Adirondack Explorer about it, and wanted to check it out. It is only a 3.2 mile round trip, but one of those 'a lot of bang for your buck' mountains. It has a lot of scrambling near the summit. It was a good climb, I'll have to lead it officially sometime this fall. Participants: Jim Coutant, Steve Mackey.

Bradley Pond (Newcomb area)   Sat, Jun 6, 2015, Rich Crammond
- Once again, just a great day to be in the 'Dacks. Seven hardy hikers enjoyed this outing to the back country. The trail had some tough spots but we took our time and made it back to the trailhead A OK. Highlights of this outing were hiking along a neat runoff stream, helping each other at two main water crossings, low bugs, a nice spring breeze, and super sunshine all day. Reg played a couple of tunes on his pocket horn also. It just didn't get any better. Mid week Paddle   Tue, Jun 9, 2015, Maureen Coutant
- This week we paddled around in the Glen Lake fen (wetland). Our mission was to find the route to get us close to the Great Escape. After taking two wrong turns and winding up at beaver dams or dead ends, we wound up finding the channel that leads to the wet area you can see from Rt 9 and Glen Lake Rd. We followed that past a beaver (McMansion) lodge, but shortly after that were stopped by a beaver dam. Up the bank from there you could see the graveyard of amusement park rides of the past...so we considered our mission successful! Sewards and Black Fly Blood Drive   Sat, Jun 13, 2015, Mike Fuller
- With the weather calling for rain all week, we ended up having a perfect day. After the hikers briefing we were on our way. Heather and I brought our trail saws to clear blowdown, which we first encountered on the fire truck road; the whole group helped to clear it. Soon we were heading up the Calkins Brook Trail which was in pretty good shape considering all the rain we had. At last the ridge trail, Donaldson, and the black flies. We thought about lunch on Emmons but the bugs were too bad. The viewing area on the west side of Donaldson proved to be a great lunch spot with a breeze to keep the black flies at bay. Now off to Seward, the great rock scramble and views off the south shoulder. Soon cheers of the last peak of the day; wow the bugs aren't that bad here. We returned back to the Calkins Brook Trail and headed back down. As I swept on my way out, something caught my eye on a huge moss covered boulder; they were little specs of white. Suddenly they flew over and landed on my arm. The black fly elders had come to thank me for bringing the other hikers to feed on and insure that a new generation of black flies will be around next year. I told them that I'd bring another group next year. After catching up with the rest of the group clearing a blowdown, we had a great hike out just before sunset. Phelps Mt. (Herd Path)   Sat, Jun 13, 2015, Bill Morse
- After all the rain last week, and last night, the trail was a little wet and muddy. But the day was bright and sunny and not too warm. Counted 35 people on top, so lots of hikers out for a great day. We went up the marked trail via South Meadows and returned by the herd path and then the Klondike trail. Herd path was in excellent condition, very little mud. This path does not get used much so the trail is not worn down to roots and rocks. A nice change! Crane Mt.   Sun, Jun 14, 2015, Alison Laurin
- We ended up having a small group of old 46er hiking buddies today! It was a very pleasant laid-back hike with warm weather and super views from the top. We took the ladder route up, socialized at the summit while looking at the views, then continued on over the top and down to the pond. We socialized some more at the pond's edge and then headed down and out to complete the loop. Great to catch up with everyone! Thanks for a great day in the woods! Tuesday Trek   Tue, Jun 16, 2015, Maureen Coutant
- This week we wound up doing a paddle rather than a hike. We wanted to paddle on Lake George before the tourist season hit full swing! We headed out from Eric's place on the west side of the lake to Speaker Heck Island to see the eagle's nest and hopefully...some eagles! The wind was blowing a bit and picked up a bit as we were heading to the island. With little white caps, the paddle was more of a workout than normal. Would we ever get there? The island didn't seem to be getting any closer! But the wind died down a bit and we pushed through...and made it! We saw the nestling standing up in the nest and some of us also saw a parent. We paddled around the island and then got out and looked at the nest from the land and some used the nice restroom. We returned with the wind (not as much as we fought against!) and had a very enjoyable lunch on Eric's deck overlooking the lake. Great day out! - Although it was not as muddy as on Mike Fuller's hike to the Sewards a week before, we still had plenty of Adirondack mud on the trail. We also had our black fly friends still with us, especially at the higher elevations. Neither mud nor biting insects could dampen the spirits of this fine group, though. Although the black flies kept us from spending much time at the summit, the breeze on the overlook just below the summit was enough to keep them to a tolerable level. We enjoyed lunch and the views from this spot before heading down. - This week we paddled on a section of the Hudson River from the Feeder Canal Dam up to the crib remains from the logging days on the Hudson. With a threat of bad weather, which didn't materialize, we only had a small group. The water was like glass and we explored a little inlet area until the mosquitos discouraged further exploration! We saw a heron, an osprey, and a beaver who slapped his tail to draw our attention. Participants: Stewart Brown, Mo Coutant, Cave Naylor, Licia Mackey, & George Sammons.

Santanoni, Couch, and Panther   Sat, Jul 4, 2015, Mike Fuller
- We really dodged the rain on this hike. With trails just a little wet we made great time to the old beaver dam turn which some of the party missed and went all the way to the lean to. After yelling "you missed the trail; it's back here," we soon regrouped. Once at Bradley Pond the climbing started. It's funny how we always take a break on the same rocks half way up every year. Soon we reached the Panther herd path where we dropped our packs for the short climb to the summit. Low clouds rolled over the Santanoni ridgeline. There's something beautiful about the alpine mist swirling around you like "the ghost of hikers past." Back to our packs, a fuel up, and off to Couch. We made great time and even got some views of Duck Hole. At Couch we broke for lunch, pictures, and, with no sign of rain, headed back to Times Square. We sure were meeting a lot of other hikers taking advantage of the nice day. It's off to Santanoni where we noticed how far we had been: "Wow we just came from there." Santanoni gave us great views of the surrounding high peaks and the Tahawus Mine. As we headed down the Express Trail we ran into our first rain. By the time we got to the main trail it cleared up. Once on the road it was a quick 45 minutes back to the parking lot. A great day spent with a fun group. - After all the rain this week there was an abundance of mud and the rocks were extra slippery. A long day; the last part of the group got out at 10PM. A long slow, muddy day. But it was a good group with most of us taking turns taking some slides on the slippery rocks. The trip leader took the best fall into a stream. Very refreshing. Does anyone do Allen more than once or twice? Why? - This week we paddled from where we left off 2 weeks ago along the Hudson River. We started in South Glens Falls at the end of Nolan Rd. From there we paddled upstream and into the little bays along the south side of the river. The water was high which allowed us to get a little further than you normally can. We got right up to the Northway on the SE side of the Hudson then turned around and headed to the main river and went under the Northway. Then we explored the little bay on the west side and only stopped due to blow down in the water. Nice evening out! Thomas and Cat Traverse   Sat, Jul 11, 2015, Reg Prouty
- We spotted two vehicles near Edgecomb Pond and proceeded to the trailhead for Thomas and Cat near exit 24 of the Northway. We took the newer Thomas trail and the spur trail to the Thomas cabin and took about a 15 minute break there before dropping down to the connecting trail to Cat. Upon arriving atop Cat about 1:00 PM, Reg explained who Grace Hudowalski was and honored her with two verses of 'Amazing Grace' along with a few other tunes on his pocket trumpet. We scouted around the summit to try to find the new red trail going down to the gravel road that leads to Edgecomb Pond but decided it was too steep and treacherous for our taste so we decided to stick with the old trail down. All in all it was a beautiful summer day for the 8 of us to enjoy such great views of Lake George from the west. Participants: Reg Prouty, Ray Boucher, Jim Zack, U. - Had a wonderful hike along the shores of Lake George to Montcalm Point. Then we all took a swim to cool down. Afterwards there was a boat transport back to Bolton Landing, but few stayed for a boat ride and waterfront lunch at the Algonquin! Steve Mackey again spotted a big blackish rattlesnake!! - We continued the paddle up the Hudson series where we left off. This week starting at the launch site that you see as you drive north on I87. Again the water was high which allowed us to go a little further upstream than we usually can. We paddled to the big beaver dam, but it was either gone or the water was high enough to submerge it. It definately wasn't the same as in past years. We were able to paddle almost up to a beaver lodge and were just hanging out talking about beavers when one made a quick appearance and slapped it's tail! We headed out past Hudson Pointe and the Queensbury water intake. We could go a bit further before it got too shallow and then it was time to head back! Basin and Saddleback   Sat, Jul 25, 2015, Wayne Richter and JP Martin  
- Even with Elizabeth arriving at 5:40 am, no spaces were to be had at the Garden parking lot. After dropping some people at the trailhead while others walked from Keene Valley, JP got the group started while Wayne parked the last car in Keene Valley and caught up with group before JBL. With the logistical glitch out of the way, we had a nearly perfect day for a hike. We sunned ourselves on the porch at JBL, and again on rocks in the stream just before Slant Rock. The Shorey Short Cut continued to impress with its fine views. As we climbed towards Basin, we met the first of three groups hiking the entire Great Range. We had lunch on Basin while enjoying the spectacular views. Everyone got up Saddleback in good form and we were treated to more fine views on the summit and met a group celebrating a 46er finisher. We even made it back to the Garden in time to catch the shuttle to our cars. - After an adventurous ride down Crane Pond Road, we parked and started on foot from the roadside of the wetlands and headed over to the actual trail start. Despite the forecasts for wicked hot temperatures and high humidity we managed to have a pleasant hike up to the summit of Pharaoh Mt. where the views were good and the breeze that greeted us even better! - After all the last minute cancellations we ended up with a small group of 7 for this hike! The weather was perfect today! The very clear views from the tops of both Nippletop and Dial, and again from the shoulder of Noonmark, made for pleasant sit-downs along the way. Today was a good day to hike with great people who had great attitudes! - Although we've paddled this favorite section of the Hudson many times before...the Spier Falls section never looked like this! All season the water on the Hudson was high, so it was somewhat of a surprise to get to the launch and have the water 5-8 feet lower than normal! I say somewhat, since Marjory had seen a notice in the paper and warned me earlier that day that they were doing work on the dam and had lowered the water level. We went anyway to see if we could get into the cove area on the south side of the island above the Horseshoe Dam. We just barely could...it was strange to see the rocks so exposed. Good thing it's a big river or we wouldn't have been able to paddle!! So almost as cool as the weird water level was the weird foldup kayak that Robin brought!! See pictures on the website. I'd just heard about these, and then someone brought one. Talk about portability! Fold it up and stick it in the back seat with room to spare, so cool. - Another great day in the Adirondacks; well close to it anyway. The trip leader had this hike at between 10 and 11 miles round trip and hiking bud's Jim's GPS said 12.5 miles round trip so I guess I was a little short. EEKS again! We got our money's worth, so to speak, there. Highlights of this outing were great views from Flowed Lands, a super nice waterfall, a great group of folks to hike along with and a heavy downpour on the way out but no close lightening strikes plus no mishaps. - This week we went up to Lake Abanakee to paddle around on a hot summer day. We knew it was going to be hot, so most of us wore our bathing suits and cooled off with a little swim on our way back to the launch site. It felt great!! The other highlight from the paddle was our close encounters with a pair of loons. One swam almost under Laurie's kayak! It was a great trip! - We got our wish for good weather. We had a beautiful clear day. We had fun figuring out all the mountains around us. We could see the high peaks to the north. There was a cliff to the west that I wasn't aware of, and there wasn't any sign of 'man' for as far as you could see. I remember Snowy being steep near the end, and that sure was true. The tower is in good shape, though there is no glass left. There were plenty of other hikers on the trail. Wright, Algonquin and Iroquois   Sun, Aug 30, 2015, Wayne Richter
- This was a fine day to hike Wright, Algonquin and Iroquois. Stephen was particularly interested in the plane crash on Wright, and we were fortunate enough to encounter a summit steward on his way up to Algonquin who gave us a pretty good description of what to look for. After some time on the summit, we went down towards the plaque commemorating the crash and found a number of the pieces of the wreckage. We then moved on to Algonquin for a brief stop before heading over to Iroquois where we enjoyed the sun and views for quite a while. After another stop on Algonquin on the way back, we headed for the parking lot and home. - This Tuesday evening we launched along the Hudson River between Corinth and Hadley. We headed north towards Hadley and had a nice picnic on the rocks just below Rockwell Falls and the Hadley bridge. Even though the calendar said September, it was still a warm evening and a few of us went for a swim off the rocks. Then we had a nice easy paddle back down the river to the launch site. Haystack   Sat, Sep 12, 2015, Wayne Richter
- With a forecast of increasing clouds and likelihood of rain, we hoped for the best. Fortune smiled on us as we got some of the last few spaces in the Garden. Soon on the trail, we made the planned rendezvous with Mary at Johns Brook Lodge. Our full group assembled, we passed by Bushnell Falls and enjoyed a rest at Slant Rock. Next was the big climb of the day. With dry conditions, it went quickly enough, and we soon assembled on the open rock view just before the drop to the base of Little Haystack. We had beaten the clouds and had a splendid view of the summit yet to come. We got to the top of Haystack in time for lunch, and enjoyed the views and company of other hikers, as well as a very cute little dog. With over half the group on Haystack for the first time, we were more than pleased to be well below the clouds and even have a few pokes of sunshine on the summit. All too soon, though, we had to head back. A bit of rain beginning near Bushnell Falls was no bother, and we finished well before dark. Moxham Mountain   Sat, Sep 12, 2015, Rich Crammond
- This outing had its ups and downs, but mostly ups. One part of the hike was being with folks who enjoy being out there as much as myself and also enjoyed the great view from the summit. The down side of this trip was the 'ground bees' (yellow jackets) along the trail in two spots! And they proved to be quite nasty indeed! Thanks again, Steve, for putting orange tape on sticks to show where the ground nest was close by on the trail. Highlights of this outing were great views, great hiking buds, a great day with much needed rain at the end of the hike, and having Benadryl and an Epipen with us - 'you never know when one might need them!' Monthly Monday Geocache   Mon, Sep 14, 2015, Sarah King
- This month we hiked up part of the Schaefer Trail which starts from the parking lot of the Ski Bowl. We followed the trail up the mountain along a beautiful stream with little waterfalls. There were 4 or 5 geocaches to stop and look for along the way which helps break up the hike and give us a break. We were all surprised at how beautiful the trail up the mountain was and how lucky we were to be out on such a beautiful day. - This week we explored a section of the Schroon River not far from where it empties into the Hudson on the west side of Warrensburg. The river had little bays to explore, an island to paddle around, a bridge or two? to paddle under and finally you get to some rocks and rapids that force you to return to the dam that we launched above. It was another beautiful September day, so we ended by meeting for lunch at a park along the Schroon River right in the middle of Wsbg. Great morning out! - Seven of us--5 soon-to-be members--had a great fall day In North River hiking the 6-mile Botheration loop trail, a new experience for most. The group kept a comparable, comfortable pace to get views of Blake and Botheration Ponds. There was a scenic lunch stop on rocks along a branch of Sacandaga Creek. Indian Head and Fish Hawk cliffs   Tue, Sep 22, 2015, Maureen Coutant
- Ok...so I remembered it was a nice hike and view, but it was even better than I remembered! It's nice when that happens! I didn't oversell it. Everything was great. The walk along Gill Brook, the view from Indian Head and Fish Hawk Cliffs, finding the hikers we briefly lost, and then the view from the dam at the lake, the beautiful blue sky with puffy clouds, and finally the view of Rainbow Falls! The only thing that would have made it a little better was a little more fall color, but no one was complaining - that would have just been silly! Marshall Peak and Plane Crash Site   Sat, Oct 3, 2015, Mike Fuller
- Yes!!! Finally a blue sky Marshall hike. We all arrived at Upper Works where I gave out 10lb bags of Adirondack blue and red "patatas." After getting to know names and a hiker briefing we were on our way. Flowed Lands gave us a beautiful sunny place for a break. Some of us remember past years of overcast skies and last year's cold rain on the hike. Herbert Brook was in great shape for keeping feet dry. We stopped at my favorite spot on Marshall, a little alpine bog which is the source of Herbert Brook. Soon we were all on the summit, with lunch time, pictures, and a view of Iroquois and Shepherds Tooth. The herd path to Cold Brook Trail yielded great views of Wallface and the Sewards. Off to the plane wreck; many couldn't believe a whole plane less than a 100 feet from the trail. After lots of pictures we headed down to Lake Colden. Wayne and Joe took most of the group back to the Upper Works while I swept with the rest. We were all treated to a beautiful star filled night sky for our hike out. A great day spent with a great group. - Great, great, amazing hike! Love this hike! Just myself and one other participant had been on the ridge before, so it was fun to introduce so many people to a "new" area. The 2012 trail is a big improvement over the prior steep trail and we enjoyed meeting a group of "Road Scholars" from ADK's main club at our first stop along the Jay Range. Afterwards we hiked on along the ridge, but will have to return and hike a little further to get to the cool cairns and other lookouts. I highly recommend this hike! - It finally felt like fall with temps around 50, but in the bright sunshine it felt fine...unless the wind picked up! But that was only occasionally, so it was a great outing. This week we went over to check out Lens Lake outside of Stoney Creek. It was a bit further than I usually go, but with the fall foliage at its peak it was an amazing drive and then paddle. The lake is known for its bog plants and even in the fall it's an amazing place. The pitcher plants were a beautiful crimson. There was another plant that was sticking up its stem with a puff on top throughout the bog and reminded me of a Dr. Seuss drawing. We even found a few geocaches as we paddled around the lake. Noonmark and Round Loop   Sat, Oct 17, 2015, Wayne Richter
- Who would have expected the middle of October to give us both beautiful fall foliage and snow up top? With the possibility of rain in the forecast and a few conflicts that came up, only two of us came out for this hike. We had no rain and found the intermittent snow showers to be no bother at all while giving the plants a lovely coating of white. We summited Noonmark wrapped in a cloud and the wind blowing powerfully. After lunch in the shelter of the woods on the opposite side, we went back up to the summit and found the clouds torn away here and there, giving us splendid views of the surrounding peaks and the valleys below. We continued down the back side of Noonmark and then headed up Round, where we were mostly socked in. Participants: Wayne Richter, Matt Wolcott.

- We had a great foliage day as we circled Putnam Pond and several of the smaller nearby water bodies. This was a new destination for most participants, as we put in 8 miles total. We explored the old mining center and looked in the large cave where the ore was extracted. Thanks to Marsha, the Ticonderoga resident who provided some of the local history. Monday Monthly Geocache   Mon, Oct 19, 2015, Sarah King and Mo Coutant  
- We headed to the Pinnacle today to look for 9 new caches here. 4 were on the trail to the summit and 5 were on the new yellow trail, which ends on Edgecomb Pond Road. I assume plans are to connect it across Edgecomb Pond Road to the Cat/Thomas Trails but for now, it ends on the road. We spotted a car at the last cache on the yellow trail and then drove down to the parking lot for the Pinnacle. It was a cold clear day but we quickly shed our layers as the first 20 minutes or so is a real heart pumper. The cache at the summit is aptly called What A View and it was! We admired the view, took some pictures, had some snacks and then headed back down the trail to where the yellow trail started. It's marked with a sign saying To Edgecomb Pond, 1.3 miles. Although it is fairly well marked with yellow markers, they really blend in with all the leaves and we had trouble spotting them. Lots of leaves and roots also made footing a bit challenging. Lots of ups on this trail as well. We noted that we thought they could have added some switchbacks here. Not a long hike but we really enjoyed this new trail and the amazing view from the top. Monday Monthly Geocache   Mon, Nov 2, 2015, Sarah King and Mo Coutant  
- It was another perfect day on the trails at The Lake George Land Conservancy's new trail to Record Hill in Anthony's Nose Preserve. We met at Panera and carpooled up to the preserve, meeting Todd there. There is a small gravel lot there for about 4 cars. We started our hike at 9:40am grabbing the first of 6 caches, which was located at the trailhead. Trail conditions were good and dry. The weather was sunny and warm in the high 60s with a bit of wind at the summit. Amazing weather for early November. With the elevation, we were all shedding layers as we hiked. Sarah got down to her t-shirt. Our total mileage was 2.5 miles and our maximum elevation was 1276 ft. We maintained a leisurely pace, stopping to catch our breath and find a cache. After finding the cache on the summit, Todd wandered around and discovered a stunning overlook to the south. We had our lunch at a nice rocky outcropping and headed down, arriving back at the trailhead at 12:30. A great outing which was enjoyed by all. - Thank you, thank you, thank you! Many GF-S ADK chapter members joined members of the Lake George Property Committee to do a fall cleanup at ADK Headquarters off Exit 21. Just popping in for an hour or two is great help and many people stayed until midafternoon. I had to leave early myself and really appreciate all my longtime committee members and volunteers making sure all the chores got done! Thanks again. Mo

- This was the first week back to the "midweek walk/hike" season! So we started off with a nice stroll along the Harry Betar Walkway in South Glens Falls. The walkway goes along the river and then up on the bluff along the river. It's a great spot in South Glens Falls to head out and get a little exercise. Afterwards most of us headed over to Spot Coffee for some refreshments. - The first thing I noticed was that this trail has been much improved, as well as marked and widened so it is obvious how to get to the twin bridges. I also discovered where the turn is for the connecting trail to Queensbury School Campus via the cross-country trail system. - We headed to Gurney Lane Rec to do some hills and get some fresh air. The hiking trails were covered with those slippery oak leaves, but not the bike trails. We zig-zagged our way up, around and down with no mishaps. Alas, we neared a cache Sarah had placed. She navigated us briefly off trail to search. Oh what a fun find! We were able to hike on the rainbow of hiking trails too, as we proceeded. (Hum, had the bikers swept these trails?) It was great to hear of Judy & Doug's summer Alaska adventure, Todd's No.Vt. visit and Tom & Denis's tales of Ireland along the way. - Just a great day to be in the park. We didn't see many deer but there were lots of humans on the trail. The nice wether had lots to do with that. We learned some history from Dave Fiske, author, and hiked past part of an 1800 homestead spot. Neat stuff, good hiking buds and it just didn't get no better. Looking forward to next year. - This was my first trip out in awhile after being down and out with pneumonia for what seemed like most of November! So instead of hiking up Shelving Rock Mtn, we took it easier and headed down past the waterfall and walked along the Lake George trail. Some of the group looked for a couple of geocaches while others spent more time enjoying the views. We also noticed an old foundation and an old bed frame which a tree has grown up through. There was also a neat old tree nearby. Great company, great views and a great day out. Upon returning to the parking lot, we removed about 8 shopping bags full of garbage. - Our destination today was Saratoga Spa State Park. We were experiencing heavy fog when we met at Panera at 9am but it had mostly cleared off by the time we arrived in Saratoga. We started from the main parking lot by the administration building and headed toward our first cache. We had several people who had never geocached before so it was fun to show them the various ways geocaches can be hidden. We mostly walked on the Five Mile Trail, finding 4 caches as we walked. One of the most memorable caches was disguised as an acorn! We all wandered around in circles until Licia spotted it. Tuesday Walk   Tue, Dec 8, 2015, Maureen Coutant
- Maureen was still nursing a cold, so Licia and Bill co-led. We completed the whole Rush Pond Trail, north to south and back (4.4 miles round trip), in Queensbury near the Northway's Exit 20. The trail has been widened since we last visited, and some of us discussed the possibility of a ski trip on the relatively-flat surface. There are a number of nice vantage points for the pond and wetlands, with rustic bridges, and several chances to connect to the Queensbury School cross-country trails that merit exploration. Sarah and Licia found a parking area for the south end off Aviation Road--don't even think of parking at the Fox Farm Road trailhead. - Man, what a day for hiking in the park for December. Four hikers just paced ourselves slower to enjoy the forest and spend a little longer with nature. Highlights of this outing were spending time with fellow hike leaders Jayne Bouder and Reg Prouty, and spending some time at the tower I used to visit back int he early 60s. - I still wasn't up for a hike, so we did a walk along the trails in Coles Woods in Glens Falls. We picked up a little trash along the way and explored a newish section of the trails. It was on this hike that we first noticed a weird bush? tree? which we've seen on other hikes afterwards. The bark was split in a weird pattern. Annual Cookie and Cocoa walk   Tue, Dec 22, 2015, Maureen Coutant
- Ok...the cookies must have been the draw! It certainly wasn't the weather! It wasn't cold, but it was raining the whole time. Not a mist, not a sprinkle...rain! But 12 crazy people joined me. Like I said...it must have been the cookies. We did the shortest walk around the lake, which is mysteriously low, and wound up at the warming hut. We all pulled out some goodies to share and ate too many sweets! Donna's Moose Cut-out cookies were the talk of the gathering, but all of them were great. Always a good time. Does anyone know why the lake is so low? - This week we walked along the Hudson Pointe trail and were able to get to the bridge thanks to the work that was done to add walkways to the areas that were always either muddy or underwater. The water was just up to the walkways, but we didn't have any troubles. After doing the loop, the group was up for an exploratory mission to check out the Moreau State Park trail that is on the opposite side of the Hudson from the park. It was further up Corinth Rd. Bill and Kathi became our new leaders. We enjoyed the rock wall, and old foundation which even had the well still visible...and covered by stones. It was very cool. The trail takes you down to the river and then we headed back. We had quite the world travelers with us with Heather Mackey back in town from Hawaii and Chris Brown visiting from his job in China and Joanne having toured many of the places they'd travelled to. Great to get out and work off some of those Christmas cookies!
