Buck Mountain from Inman Pond   Sat, Jan 5, 2013, Jayne Bouder
- This hike was switched to Old Far, because most of us had already snowshoed up Buck on Reg's New Year's Day hike. So we went to North Hudson, where the sun was shining and the snow was deeper, and the views were crystal clear. And spent all day visiting three small, steep mountains in unbroken (except for deer) snow, at an exhausting to leisurely pace. Nate, you did great! Thank you Scott for breaking trail uphill; we couldn't have done it without you. Jay, great hiking with you again, after all these years. Monthly Monday Geocache trip   Mon, Jan 7, 2013, Sarah King and Maureen Coutant  
- This week we did a 'maintenance' geocache trip. We snowshoed along the Lake George elementary school trails to check on and repair caches in this area that were mostly placed there by Sarah. It's always good to go on these trails. We found out, however, that the school administrators really don't want the public on them during school hours. But we got an OK from the gym teacher who was just bringing a class in from the trails. So ... check out the trails on the weekends! 3 Participants: Mo Coutant, Sarah King, and Licia Mackey.

- Carpe Snow! This was one of the last chances to get out before the forecasted warm weather and rain of mid-January. Many others had been out over the weekend and the trails were hard packed and icy for the first mile at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve. But after that section the trails were in better shape and we were all glad to get out and enjoy the snow while we had it. We were hoping it wouldn't be our last chance of the season. NewAlgonquin peak   Sat, Jan 12, 2013, Mike Fuller
- We had a mild day for January and a great group of new and seasoned hikers. After checking everyone's gear, we started in using just micro-spikes. The trail to the intersection still had rocks showing, about a half hour past that, it was snowshoes the rest of the day. Some time after that Jen said she was feeling under the weather. We all stopped, lightened up her pack and split up her gear. Rachel said she would take all her food. Nancy did a great job spearheading the hike and keeping the pace just right. Before heading out of the tree line, we put on extra layers. The summit was socked in with clouds but we still got some great pictures. About 15 minutes off the summit the sky opened up. Will couldn't believe the view on his first time climbing in the 'daks; he was hooked. Everyone's thoughts turned to Wright, but first we had that great butt slide. Bill was our feature camera man. Glen showed us a real professional ice axe arrest. After all the laughs, we got ourselves back on the trail and up to Wright. Denise, not yet a 46er, started her second round. That's the spirit! We hiked out in base layers, as it was quite warm for January. A wicked fun day with great people. Fifth Peak Lean-to   Sat, Jan 12, 2013, Bill Morse
- Okay, I was wrong on the elevation gain. It was more like 1,400 feet. Not real steep. But uphill most of the way. The trip itself was very good. It was a little warm, making the snow heavy and wet, especially on the way out. Normally, Fifth Peak has a good view of Lake George, but it was too foggy. There were four of us plus one dog. Several people cancelled last minute, possibly due to the threat of rain. - This week we were in between snow. What we had melted and new snow came the next day ... with hopefully more to follow. So we walked in Saratoga. We started at the Canfield Casino through Congress Park up Spring Street and along back streets to marvel at the architecture and paint jobs! We headed for the Spring Run Trail and were pleased to find it snow and ice free. We did that two mile RT walk and then headed to The Bread Basket near Congress Park for a fabulous lunch! Winter Bird/Raptor Field Trip - Washington County Grasslands   Sat, Jan 19, 2013, Laurie LaFond and Rich Speidel  
- Fortunately the weather was favorable for this mid-January outing: dry, about 37 degrees, and just enough breeze to assist the hawks in flight, but not too chilly. A big winter raptor of the grasslands – the rough-legged hawk – put on a great show, as several perched, hovered, and landed at close range. The more slender northern harrier was also in fine view from the roadside, with two males on the hunt skimming the field. Red-tailed hawks were also observed as we circled the grasslands. Near dusk, with a brilliant red sunset in the western sky, we checked an area known for short-eared owls. We had some luck, as one owl flew nearby then veered away. Then two more owls were seen at a distance, rising and dropping into ground cover. - This week we walked in Moreau State Park just after the January thaw, but before the really frigid weather hit. It was brisk though when the wind hit you and the temp just barely into double digits. Luckily we were mostly in the woods and the wind wasn't constant. We hiked around the lake and around Mud Pond. From the rise on the western shore we had a great view down to the beaver lodge and since there was no snow on the ice, we could see the paths that the beavers use to get from their lodge to shore. Plus, we saw plenty of other signs of beaver, including scraped off bark and pointy stumps along the shoreline. We ended the hike in the warming hut with stories of trip misadventures, but not ADK trips! 7 Participants: Mo Coutant, Liz Gee, Sarah King, Joy Munro, Andrew and Anne Paolano, and Joanne Szot.

Barton High Cliffs   Sat, Jan 26, 2013, Jayne Bouder
- Jay led us into the woods as Barbara McMartin recommended; a new way in for us, and it was nice. Beautiful day! Snowshoeing on a foot of hard snow with a couple of inches of powder on top was easy, and the ridge up had just the usual blowdown clutter. We had sun all day, and no wind chased us back from the cliffs. We spotted a porcupine high in a tall tree as we curved down and around to the talus field, and had nice views up the cliffs we'd been on as we completed our loop. Algonquin/Iroquois/and Wright Peaks   Sat, Jan 26, 2013, Ron Lester
- A little nip in the air at minus 13 degrees had us scurrying down the trail to start. Not surprisingly, the forecast was wrong! Again. Cloudy with high winds turned out to be glorious blue sunny skies with light winds. This was a classic winter hike with great views, and the feeling that we were right on the edge of some serious cold once we climbed above treeline. Global warming took the day off, but it's subsequent lack of snow was quite evident. We all carried snow shoes but never needed them. Thanks to Mike and Don for their shepherding work in front and rear. Mr. Fuller also makes a mighty mean brownie! Stillwater Locks Eagle Watch Hike/Snowshoe   Sat, Jan 26, 2013, Rich Crammond
- The other participants didn't show up, so I hiked solo on this cold winter day. It was a great day to view wildlife. Highlights of this outing were seeing Bluebirds pecking on bittersweet, looking at a very large Eagle's nest with two Eagles perched close by up river, and watching a Red Squirrel scamper across the metal grate Lock 4 Canal doors. It just doesn't get any better! 1 Participant: Rich Crammond.

- This week was a dilemna, as I wasn't sure we'd have enough snow to ski or if it would be too icy to walk. I decided to head to the Feeder Canal and found that it was fine for walking. Covered with an inch or so of snow, but no ice. We walked from the beginning at the dam along the Hudson River to Rt 9 in Glens Falls. It's a nice spot to look down at the falls that you can only see briefly as you drive over the bridge to South Glens Falls. Treadway - Pharoah Wilderness   Sat, Feb 2, 2013, Bill Morse
- This was an excellent day for a hike up Treadway! There was enough ice to cross Putnam Pond to the Treadway trail. The trail was frozen snow with some ice patches, but nothing we could not work around. Great views at the top, but with a light breeze where we did not want to hang around too long. In the woods was no breeze and it was very comfortable, especially on the return trip. A great group to hike with. 9 Participants: Susan Keely, Joanne Walczak, Kathy Ryan, Cheryl Agris, Colleen Downing, Karen Burka, Eric Kimmelman, Bruce Cushing, Bill Morse, and Abbey the dog. Abbey especially enjoyed meeting everyone.

- Ok, if you could have come on this one and didn't - kick yourself! It was that incredible. Laurie emailed me to say that the ice on Moreau Lake was skateable with smooth black ice! Those conditions don't last long, so I made that our midweek outing. It was amazing to see through the layers. We saw all kinds of cool ice or snow bubbles frozen between layers. You could see down to the bottom and see a tree resting there. We saw a couple of dead fish and plants suspended in the ice. We skated around the lake checking it out and felt like kids again! We skated a figure 8 and then decided to write a message to be seen by any planes. So we etched a C and an L on either side of the 8 to spell out 'cool,' which it was! So cool that I came back with my daughter and husband and Laurie and her son after school that same day! Who knows when those conditions will return ... it only lasted until that Friday when it was covered with snow. - We moved the trip from Saturday to Sunday because of all the media reports of the big storm coming. We obviously only got about eight inches so we could have gone, but our change in plans brought a glorious sunny day. Usually, on this hike, we don't see any other groups doing the same mountains, but on this trip, we had two other groups and a lone hiker, (that broke trail all the way up), that we ran into. We were able to hang out a bit, on both Pyramid and Gothics, which is a rare treat this time of year. Most of the group wanted to also climb Sawteeth, so while they bagged another peak, I skied the road an extra time. 5 Participants: Alan Jines, Hugh Davis, Wayne Richter, Cecilia Elwert, and Steve Mackey.

Monday Geocache   Mon, Feb 11, 2013, Sarah King and Maureen Coutant  
- This month we looked for geocaches along the canoe carry near the horseshoe dam not far from Moreau State Park. We've paddled just upstream of the dam and once got out and walked along the carry to overlook the dam, so it was interesting to find a way in from a road. We found all but one of the caches, but we also found some cool tracks. One of them we're pretty sure was a river otter with a pretty distinctive slide! - This week we were going to do a snowshoe along the Red Ridge trail in Moreau State Park, but once we got there we decided we only needed our grippers. Those turned out to be fine, although some of the downhills were a little difficult. Not too bad though. We finished with snacks or lunch in the warming hut. We love that place. - This week we walked along the Hudson Falls to Ft. Edward section of the Feeder Canal Trail. The trail was mostly free of snow, but there were icy patches that made grippers helpful. Most of us walked around them though since you didn't need the grippers most of the time. We saw a pileated woodpecker, but not too many other birds. A nice skating rink on the canal though in Hudson Falls. Basin/Saddleback Peaks   Sat, Feb 23, 2013, Mike Fuller and Steve Mackey  
- The first thing that I'd like to mention in this trip review is my mistake with my e-mail address. It is farmallboy55@hotmail.com, not just farmallboy. I noticed a lot of people showing up for the hike whose e-mails I did not receive. I am glad you came. We carpooled to the Garden, it's a good thing. At 7am the lot was almost full. We booted it to Slant-Rock where we switched to snowshoes. A light snow was falling and Steve, who was leading, said the trail was already broke open; I was sweeping. We went up over Shorey Shortcut, a few from the group said that it's the longest mile they have ever hiked. Up to Basin, where we were blasted by wind and snow pellets. The back side of Basin had a dangerous butt slide, thanks to our blockers who kept us from going over into the abyss. When we got to Saddleback it was real teamwork. I was most worried about Denise but thanks to a great group we worked together and got everyone up. Congrats to Cole who finished his Winter 46! Thanks to Rob for giving him the (velcroed) winter rocker off his pack. Off to Ore Bed Trail where we grabbed some pictures and eats. The hike out couldn't have been better with light falling snow and a group picture at the ranger cabin, thanks to Jen, our trip photographer. We managed to get out without lamps. Thanks to Steve for co-leading. - This week we walked along the trails in Saratoga State Park. There wasn't much snow, but we needed our grippers for some of the icy parts of the trails. We walked along a stream, past the spouter, and through SPAC. When the sun came out, it almost felt spring-like but not quite! The Wolfjaw Peaks   Sat, Mar 2, 2013, Ron Lester and Melody Hoffmann  
- Once again, the weather forecast was way off. All day snow showers, with moderate winds and chill factors of zero were called. But there turned out to be not a flake of snow, barely a breath of wind, and two totally comfy summits, albeit stuck in the clouds with no views. There were a lot of new slides in the area from Irene. We had a good day out in the mountains and encountered a variety of hikers, including those looking for a lost dog, and a couple skiing up the trail with their infant son. Awesome trail brownies Wayne. They may be better than Mr. Fuller's. The moral of the story is stop granting the weathermen unconditional credibility! Get out there and enjoy the outdoors. Cheers!

- We had a good turnout and good skiing. Newcomb had four foot high show banks alongside the road, so it was a little bit of a different world compared to Glens Falls. We got a bit spread out, due to equipment issues, and different skiing abilities, so during most of the day there was at least a person or two along each mile of the five mile distance. - This week we headed up to the Warren County trails on and next to Cronins Golf Course in Warrensburg. It was a 'make your own adventure' trip. Most of the group chose XC skiing on the golf course while a few of us walked through the woods. Allen Peak   Sat, Mar 9, 2013, Mike Fuller
- Allen Peak didn't live up to 'The Big Nasty' it was more like the big easy. We started out with blue sky and 12 degrees. We crossed the Hudson with garbage bags and we were on our way to Allen on a hard packed trail. Once we reached Skylight Brook, it was snowshoes to the the top. Temps had climbed and the snow was getting soft. Wow, winter on Allen with just your baselayer, some views, eats, pictures and we were on way back. We got out just after 6:00 with selves rolled up and the last of the sunlight. 5 Participants: Glen Cabby, David Charles, Denise McQuade, John Kwasnowski and Mike Fuller.

Woodhull Fire Tower with a St. Patty's Theme   Sun, Mar 10, 2013, Jen Shepherd
- Woodhull in winter ... over 15+ miles round trip of seemingly easy, flat terrain for more than the first half of the trip. In non-winter months, the only difficulty about this hike is it's length. Add a little snow and it becomes one tough monster. Once our little group got settled with parking, we'd be walking 0.6 miles in to the actual trailhead. The road is not maintained in winter, aside from snowmobile use. Most people elected to wear snowshoes in while one person bare booted and another was in micro-spikes. It wouldn't be long before they put on snowshoes. We had a nice crunchy layer of snow for the first portion of the hike. It was, however, very uneven making even walking in snowshoes difficult. It eventually turned in to soft snow that made for a great deal of sliding around. We made great time to the junction and making the summit in great time was looking promising. As the miles ticked by and the boring flat sections of trail passed on, the day was looking much more grim. The near 50's forecast was short lived. It seemed as soon as the sun came out, it was replaced by an overcast sky and a chilly wind. An omen of the mountain. I had two hikers well ahead of the group, Nick and Jon. They broke out the trail and made it to the summit. I passed them coming down on my way up. I was a mere half mile away and faced with the choice of turning back or pushing on. Push on I did. Rachel caught up and went to the summit with me. The rest of the group would be taking a break at the bridge and turning back after some relayed messages were passed. I finished my winter fire tower challenge and booked it back to the rest of the group. We had a very long and grueling day with many miles left to go until we'd see the cars. Upbeat chatter helped pass the time. We finished the hike a few hours later than I had planned, some of us with strains, sprains and everyone suffering from exhaustion. For an easy hike, this was by far tougher than any of the toughest High Peaks I've experienced thus far in winter. Just a gentle reminder of what the Adirondacks can dish out. I had summit celebration plans and wanted such a nice day for all. Even though things didn't turn out the way I'd planned, we all persevered. Everyone held their own and powered through. I had a great group of troopers and I'm glad to have had each one of you with me despite the dismal experience of the day. MacNaughton Mt   Sun, Mar 10, 2013, Jean Holcomb and EJ Holcomb  
- Sometimes the mountain is cruel and sometimes planets align. We had a beautiful day last Sunday for our attempt on MacNaughton. As most of you know this is a pure bushwack so anything is possible. There is still blowdown from Hurricane Floyd on the west side. I had not planned to attack from that side but an email changed my mind. Sean Green had summited by himself on Saturday and left a snowshoe trail from Preston Ponds. That was enough to convince me and ultimately led to 11 hikers summiting in five hours (9+ round trip). Sean's approach was masterful. He had gone straight up the brook and so was able to go under most of the blowdown. While I can't say we had an easy time, it was certainly doable and 11 snowshoes pack down a pretty good trail so we didn't have too much trouble when the snow got soft mid-day. Only the bigger John had a mishap and fell in the brook but he soldiered on and I didn't hear about it until the ride home. Jayne Bouder did a great job at sweep, pushing gently from behind to get us all up the mountain. The views up top were superb with the leaves off the trees. To save time and energy, we came out on Henderson Lake, although some of us, including me, were pretty scared. It did save a mile and got us out 6ish. It was a really great group. Everyone had a good attitude. Monday Geocache   Mon, Mar 11, 2013, Sarah King and Maureen Coutant  
- This month we walked along a snowmobile (or sled) trail up Bald Mtn just outside of Corinth. When we left the trail we sunk into the snow in spots, but in other places you could see the bare ground. We couldn't figure out why it was named 'Bald' since we didn't get to a spot that had a view, but maybe we just didn't go to the right spot. We found lots of caches though and I think I caught a glimpse of a fisher crossing the trail as we headed down the trail. We found fresh tracks and they looked to our untrained eyes as possibly from a fisher. The next day it rained all day, so we were glad to get out and see all the tracks in the snow before they got washed away. 3 Participants: Mo Coutant, Sarah King, and Licia Mackey.

- This week we walked along the Harry Betar Trail which has an upper and lower section in South Glens Falls. Along the trail are the remnants of old water plants used by the area over the past 150 years. You walk along the river and there are platforms to use to get a great view of the river and any wildlife and birds. We've seen beaver, river otters, and many varieties of birds on other trips. YMG - Mt. Marcy   Sat, Mar 16, 2013, Jen Shepherd
- It was a small group for this big Mt. Marcy adventure. The day started a bit overcast with hints of blue skies in the distance. We had a beautifully packed trail the entire way. We kept a great pace, made excellent time to Marcy Dam where we crossed over the frozen water. Shortly after, I tried to knock myself out by running full steam into a fallen birch over the trail. I blame my fogged up glasses but really I was watching my feet and not the trail! As the miles ticked by we were treated to sunshine peeking through the trees onto the trail. Every so often we'd get to sneak a view with a gorgeous blue sky background. The closer we got to Marcy though, the more overcast it got. With 1.2 miles left to the summit we were passed by the Albany Chapter while finishing up our lunch. We passed them several minutes later as we were refueled and ready to summit. The last half mile became a friendly passing game between the chapters as we each made our way to the top. It was nice to see some familiar faces and friends from another chapter! The summit provided little by way of views but was very pleasant for a short visit. There was hardly any wind and the temps were comfortable enough to allow everyone time for snacks and photos. Due to cancellations and the agreement of my remaining hikers, we had a special guest hiker for the day. Brandy was the star running circles up and down the trail. I'm pretty sure she ate more trail food than anyone in my hiking party all day, she even got some of the Albany Chapter to fall for her cuteness and share a bite or two! Our trip back down was quick with stops at Indian Falls and Marcy Dam. It was an excellent day with some great company. Stay tuned to the chapter website for photos. - I originally had about eight people signed up for this hike, and then we learned that the authorities had closed the gate going into the summer trail head. It was going to add about six miles to the round trip distance and the road was going to be muddy (poor skiing). Almost everybody canceled. We then tried to decide what peaks the remaining hikers needed for their Winter 46. The decision was to hike Dix and possibly Hough. On the way up to the High Peaks on Friday night, Licia and I got caught in a sudden white out, and ended up careening off of a pickup truck, that was careening off another car, that had jammed on their brakes. We didn't make it back up to the High Peaks until the next morning in a different car. Meanwhile Mike Fuller came to the rescue and led the hike up Dix. I don't know any details other than it was a sunny day, and that they had a good hike. 3 Participants: Mike Fuller, Denise McQuade, and Nancy Kass.

- This week we had a snowstorm on Tuesday which pushed our outing to Friday. Since we still had snow, we did a snowshoe tracking trip in Moreau State Park. Laurie, our Moreau State Park expert, led us to a porcupine den area and explained about their habits. Then we looked for deer beds under the balsams and any other tracks to be found. We didn't see the variety that we'd hoped for, but we all enjoyed getting out and enjoying the snow and a beautiful day and the warming hut at the end! 10 Participants: Mo Coutant, Carolyn Curren, Anita Dingman, Bill Glendenning, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Joy Munro, Joanne Szot, Laurie Williams, and Jean Williamson.

- We started early and headed up Hoffman's north ridge. The going was nice with the usual claw up the Big Bump (worse going down), and brief bought with a thicket of 15-year-old softwoods growing through old blowdown (that we could have avoided to the west). Excellent snow! Deepening powder on top of a hard deepening base covered most of the junk as we ascended. It might have been 3-5 ft deep on top. We got out before dark, without seeming to hurry. - This week we used what was left of the snow. We headed to Crandall Park (Cole's Woods) and decided the coverage probably wouldn't be the best for skiing, so we went out in snowshoes and grippers. Steve had old skis and decided to give it a go. We crossed paths with him a few times as we wandered around the trails in the woods. There weren't too many bare spots and we got a better workout than we expected. It was probably the last time out on snow for this season, but you never know around here! We've had the best snow in March this year! YMG - Red Hill Fire Tower   Sat, Apr 6, 2013, Jen Shepherd
- I was determined that it should be spring already so I dressed for it, layered shirts with a hiking skort. I had two meet locations plus the trailhead. We had some confusion with the construction at the twin bridges and which way we'd be getting to the trailhead but we all made it. Eventually! The temps in the Catskills were much colder than at home, winter was still clinging in the air with the last of it's dying bone chilling breeze. I ended up with pants on under my skirt for the hike but left my snowshoes behind to feel like I was winning a battle that winter clearly had a leg up on. The last 0.6 miles of the road was still a bit snowed in. We might have been able to drive down in but getting back out would have been a challenge without all wheel drive. We were walking and that was quite alright! The group kept a comfy steady pace with a few short breaks along the way. We encountered enough snow to warrant the use of micro-spikes around halfway up. Conversation was flowing, the sun was shining, and spirits seemed to be high. As we filtered out onto the summit, the sunny picnic table was already claimed so my group took over the front porch of the cabin. Since I mentioned to the group to bring some goodies to share (and I in particular like chocolate) there were tons of chocolatey goodies to go around! While we were indulging in a treat pass, a man came onto the summit who totally made our day. Many thanks to Doug Hamilton from the Red Hill tower committee for choosing such a fine day to inspect the summit. He opened the cabin right up to give us the tour and then opened the tower too! We had a great chat with him and took advantage of our good fortune by grabbing lots of photos both in the cabin and from the top of the tower. It was definitely a great day to be on Red Hill. In total we spent a bit over an hour on the summit before heading down. It was so sunny and nice after we returned to the vehicles that some of us hung around to chat a bit. Yet another great group of people making for a perfect day on the trails. - This month we finally got to Hackensack Mtn to look for the old and new geocaches along the trails. We did a loop which took us around the back side of the mountain, along the ridge and then back down towards the pond. Along the way, we found many caches and learned a few things about our GPS and each other! Many 'it's a small world' moments which seem to be common on ADK outings. - This week we walked along the Wilkinson Trail at the Saratoga National Battlefield. It's a 4.2 mile walk through the fields and woods. We stopped at the markers and used the self guided tour map to learn a little about the area as we walked. Plus, Joy added some interesting facts that she recalled from a prior Park Ranger walk that she had gone on. We finished by enjoying lunch on the sunny patio of the Visitor Center. Good thing we got out then since a couple of days later we had a mix of rain/snow/and sleet! - We finally got up Erebus from the Vista Trail! It was marked all the way, to the Bumps Pond trail, anyhow. Then we did a short, steep bushwack up to the ridge, and got a steady icy shower the rest of the way up, as frosted pine tops we had admired from Vista Trail melted on us. - This week we hiked French Mountain just off the Lake George bike trail. It was a nice warm up hike for longer hikes to come. The weather was actually spring-like, but a cool breeze on top kept us from spending too much time there. We made our annual spring clean up side trip to the remnants of an old billboard and found that the piles of trash we've carted out in the past hadn't reaccumulated. We did take out four or five bags, but that's nothing compared to other years. One little spot made better by ADK (along with the trail and parking area). - This week we walked around the Hudson Pointe Preserve in Queensbury. You walk along a bluff next to the Hudson River and then down by the river. If you're lucky, you can get to the bridge over a little bay and continue the loop trail. As expected, we weren't lucky this time (usually flooded or too muddy in the spring), but we walked as close as we could get to the bridge from both directions and also along the lesser known upper ridge trail. - The road from the Crane Pond Parking area to Crane Pond has not improved over the winter. By piling everyone in my truck, we got down the road. It was a beautiful day for a hike. Sunshine, no bugs and clear blue skies for the views at the top. Although, we were a bit surprised by the presence of ice on some of the trail near the top. It must be trout season based at the number of vehicles parked at Crane Pond and at Goose Pond. Pharaoh is one of my favorite hikes any time of the year. - Another weekend of excellent weather for hiking. The trail from Crows Landing was a little muddy after the lean-to and there was ice and snow above 3,00 feet. But it was nothing that couldn't be worked around. With the warm temps and only a light breeze, it was very pleasant to spend time on top enjoying the views. The flies were out a little on the way down, but were gone by the time we got to the lean-to. - No bugs yet ... or chipmunks. We shared a warm brew below the Diameter, checked out the tallus field for an ice cave, and canoed up an opened channel that got us within a couple of beaver dams of South Bay hamlet. The alligator gars were beautiful! Sunday we did the six-mile circuit up West Mountain to North Saddle, beginning with a side trip to a Water Wall (and dicey a little bit after that), and ending with great views of the Diameter cliff and mountain tops over Lake George. Spring Bird Walk - Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park   Sat, May 4, 2013, Rich Speidel
- We had an early start and enjoyed spectacular weather, sunny and warm. Some of the best bird action at Camp Saratoga is often near the parking lot and adjacent pond. On this morning a nesting robin, pair of kingbirds and yellow-rumped warbler were in this area, with a variety of other birds. In the field, we were treated to a lengthy visit by a bluebird. Perched on nearby posts, the bluebird's royal blue and brick red plumage was striking. There were partial views of elusive springtime favorites, including black-throated blue warbler and pine warbler. - We had good weather and strong riders. Neal rode all the way down from Bolton Landing and met us near Glen Lake. On the way up Prospect I stopped for a minute to take off my tights and had to ride hard just to keep everybody in sight. - This month we drove up to the Lake George Land Conservancy preserve at Gull Bay to look for the geocaches in the preserve and to see the heron rookery. The first cache is in the trail register and luckily when we reached in to get it the wasps that flew out didn't sting us! The rest of the caches were no problem, but the rookery appears to be abandoned. We did see an osprey in the area and speculated that might be the reason. - This week we hiked up to Berry Pond and the Lake George overlook from the Lake George Rec trails. I'd never been to the overlook, but I'd recently been to the pond and was amazed at the 'clear cutting' done by the beavers! They are having a party up there! We also saw a couple of herons and a baby in one of the nests, plus a muskrat and later a beaver swimming by. It was quite an outing! - This was a wet but very rewarding outing. We found the 1946 plane crash site and saw some neat things along the way like red effs, old foundation holes and pretty Adirondack streams. My thanks to four rugged ADK hiking buds for sharing their day in the north woods. Spring Bird Walk - Pack Forest, Warrensburg   Sat, May 11, 2013, Rich Speidel
- Because of rain on May 11, we had this outing on the Sunday rain date. I'm glad we did, as the birds really came out on this Mother's Day morning. The warblers took center stage; we identified eight species, highlighted by views of the rare Cape May warbler. This feathered gem is seldom seen as it migrates north to breed in the boreal forest of Canada. We also had good sightings of colorful parula and Nashville warblers, rose-breasted grosbeak, and a loon on Pack Forest Lake. - Ok, this was not the trip that I planned. We were going to go to the Stewarts Dam Reservoir, but a downed tree and powerline would have us drive a 45 minute detour. So, we headed back to Lake Luzerne and paddled around the lake and then towards Second Lake until we got to a beaver dam we weren't prepared to cross. Blue Ridge East via Stephens Pond   Sat, May 18, 2013, Mike McLean
- On a rather warm and sunny day, nine hardy folks headed south on the NP Trail via Lake Durant to arrive at the beautiful Stephens Pond. From the pond, we set a compass bearing and bushwhacked the 2.5 miles to the wooded summit, enjoying the wildflowers and identifying numerous scat found along the way. There were occasional views of Blue Mountain and the High Peaks seen along the way and from the summit. The way was very open but for a couple of spots on the way up, which we managed to avoid on the way back down. Panther Gorge Lean-To Check   Sat, May 18, 2013, Mike Fuller
- Wow, what a great day! We started off from Elk Lake with birds filling the air with song. Soon after we hit the trail we noticed a lot of blowdown. Steve said he would chop blowdown and catch up with us later. Our group hiked in and cleared dead trees and limbs in the trail. Having no bugs to bother us gave us plenty of opportunity for breaks and trail work. After crossing Marcy Swamp on the old split log hardening we started our climb to the lean-to. Around 3,000 feet somebody threw a snowball back when I came around the corner and saw that the trail was full of snow. It was off and on like this to the lean-to, with some snow at the lean-to. I was surprised to see the journal laying in the mud along with some other belongings from the lean-to. We did our best to pick up and rake around the lean-to. With views of Marcy, Skylight and Haystack from the lean-to somebody suggested a hike to one of them, but that'll be another day. After lunch and some pictures we headed back out and ran into Steve chopping a two-foot thick tree across the trail. Nick and I helped Steve finish the chopping and rolled the log off the trail; we then caught up with the rest of the group. It was an easy hike out with all the blowdown gone. We got back out and Jen set up her camera to take a group shot; the end to a great day. Special thanks to Steve for cutting all the blowdown. - The western section of the Western Ridge trail has been closed for two years due to power pole and line replacement near the spring end so we decided to do an easier loop of about five miles on the eastern section of the western ridge to the overlook and return via the green trail. A good day with plenty of time for lunch and music atop the overlook was had by the three of us and we were finished by early afternoon. 3 Participants: Reg Prouty, Cathy Corrigan, and Rob Furlong.

Woods Hollow Nature Preserve, Milton   Sun, May 19, 2013, Jill Gruban
- A chilly, overcast day led to slight showers as three families enjoyed a hidden garden of goodies in the midst of Ballston Spa and Milton. We walked through the lupine meadow and saw a few blooms, then swishing through the sandy pit that the children loved. We ran, yelling down the hill to the pond, which was oddly stocked with a few koi. The children enjoyed the water, even venturing into it. Onward we went to be surrounded by hemlocks and then through a marshy beaver area. The trails were poorly marked, but it wasn't difficult to find our way around. We exited the way we entered after roughly two miles of happy company. Spring Bird Walk & Climb - Pack Forest, Warrensburg   Sat, May 25, 2013, Rich Speidel
- It was a rainy, chilly weekend, so we moved this outing from May 25 to Memorial Day, May 27. The two day wait was worthwhile, as we were treated to pleasant, sunny weather and a variety of birds. Our group had good views of magnolia warbler, yellow-bellied sapsucker, least flycatcher, the elusive brown creeper, and a pair of bluebirds. At Pack Forest Lake, a pair of loons crossed from the far shore and came nearby. We enjoyed some rest and a clear view from the scenic overlook on Ben Wood Mountain. A big snapping turtle basking in sunlight capped a fine seven-and-a-half-hour field trip, and 42 species of birds for the day. 10 Participants: Patricia Brennan, Patricia Campbell, Cathy Fleming, John Good, Cathy Hall, Fran Herve, Licia Mackey, Edna Van Dorsten, Susannah Vogel, and Rich Speidel.

- This was the first evening paddle of the year. We returned to a spot where we've seen an eagle nest in the past where we saw the parents and young. We saw the nest, but no birds. We hope they were just off fishing and haven't moved to another area. Although, if the air boat that was buzzing around the water is a frequent visitor, I know I'd move! Monday Geocache   Mon, Jun 3, 2013, Sarah King and Mo Coutant  
- Today our destination was the area around Sleeping Beauty. We did not climb to the summit, but rather, set out for 'The Trail Less Travelled' geocaches. Not quite sure where the trail was, we followed our gps' to a horse/snowmobile trail, following the trail markers and crossing a stream several times. There were eight caches that we found along the way and we ended up making a nice loop back to the road into Dacy Clearing. We also mananged to find the other five caches that were on our route into Dacy Clearing. It was a beautiful day and we ended our adventure by enjoying the sunshine and lunch on one of the horse stands in the parking lot. We had a new geocacher with us and it was a good lesson on what the different size containers looked like and some helpful hints on locating caches. 4 Participants: Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Steve Grey, and Sue Jordan.

- This week we were invited to launch from a Club member's beach on the west side of Lake George. It was a calm, quiet morning on the lake. We paddled out to some islands and we were lucky enough to see a juvenile eagle on the side of it's nest. Later mom and dad visited with one of them bringing lunch in its talons. Then he or she landed in a nearby tree and posed for pictures for us. YMG - Gore Mountain Fire Tower   Sat, Jun 8, 2013, Jen Shepherd
- Another successful fire tower was added to the list! I had a small group of enthusiastic hikers to start the day. There were several weather related cancellations but those of us that came didn't shy away from a little rain! We arrived at the trailhead on Ski Bowl Road ready to tackle the adventure that lay ahead of us. My trusty fire tower book had this hike as nine miles round trip, but the signs before the trail register said it would be more like 11.6 miles round trip via the Schaefer Trail. A minor detail. What's a few extra miles! The trail was well marked and very easy to follow. We had a nice, gradual climb early on and were treated to a couple of small but roaring waterfalls and cascades. We had a mini-photo break of course. The bugs were out but not yet bothersome. Even our mud encounters were minimal. Things were running smoothly. We had one water crossing that was just wide enough that you couldn't jump and just deep enough that rock hopping was tricky without getting wet. I removed my boots and enjoyed the icy crossing, the rest of my group took their chances with rock hopping. I'll never say for sure but ... I think they were smarter? Our final ascent began after crossing some ski trails. We spotted a deer up ahead in what was becoming a very socked in looking area. I found walking on the gravel road to be a bit tedious over trail but we were at the warming hut in no time at all. After a quick break, we expected another 30-minute climb but the tower was just a few steps away! I got some group shots, minus one camera shy participant! From there we enjoyed lunch inside the warming hut that was left completely open. Yan Ny turned on the heat and it was a very comfortable break! Before leaving, we cleaned up some mess left behind by others, turned off the heat, and closed up the hut to keep animals out. Our little group had the mountain to ourselves. I was dismayed that we were socked in as fellow hike leader Rich Crammond was across the way on Moxham Mountain. We were going to send mirror signals to each other but even Rudolph wasn't getting through that fog! After a lunch and a little exploration with plenty of photos, we headed back down. My companions indulged me a little so that I could 'play' on the ski lift quick. There was an accidental slug touching incident on the way down where I may or may not have let my inner girly girl out and screamed a little. Naturally, the sun was shining with blue-bird skies as we came down in elevation. We stopped on one of the bridges to get some waterfall shots and soak up the sun. It was an excellent day and it never really did rain. I had three awesome hiking buddies for the day to make a memorable trip. We even had a rewarding Stewart's stop on the way back to Panera for coffee and chocolate ice cream! - This was another great day for taking our littlest members out! We walked the Nature Trail to the beaver pond and got to see some huts. We enjoyed and shared a picnic lunch, played on the playground and enjoyed a little time in the sand before heading home. - It isn't always that you'll have a perfect day in the Sewards, but we did. We started off with a perfect day and a happy bunch of hikers. We went up Calkins Brook, which didn't have too much mud and just the usual blowdown. Our first peak, Donaldson, gave us great views plus a new peak for first time climbers and a revisit for the rest of us 46ers. Off to Emmons where we began to meet other groups. Once there, we grabbed some pictures and took our lunch break. With everyone still smiling, it was off to Seward. This peak is where I finished my winter 46 in 2005. Hey no snow! Soon we were all on the summit with lots of cheering; Amy finished her 46! We opened up our bottles of spirits, toasted her success and the others that added the three peaks to their list. After lots of pictures, it was off to the north face to Ward Brook Trail, a last break at the bridge, and we headed back. Oh, here's the mud. Out by 8:00 and everyone was happy. What a great group. - It rained on us. But we had been rained out the week before and I could't reschedule to a better day due to conflicts, so we got a little wet! The trees protected us most of the time as we hiked up the back side of Buck Mt. When we got to the top, it was still sprinkling, but the clouds were high enough to give us a view of the lake and islands below. We'll have to come back in a month to look for blueberries! Giant: Fourth of Five Ways Via the Mossy Cascade Trail   Sat, Jun 29, 2013, Wayne Richter
- Lots of rain a day and a half before the hike gave us lovely falls in Mossy Cascade Brook. Then it was on to Hopkins with splendid views with the highest summits in the clouds. All that rain made the swamp on the side of Green Mountain quite the tricky bit of trail (did the leader really refer to it as a 'little' swamp?). Nick added some large dead trees to those already on the 'trail' to get us through. The expected showers arrived just before we reached Giant's summit. We were completely socked in and had to tell Helen to imagine the great views. Fortunately, the clouds lifted quite a bit and she got to see for herself. We descended the Ridge Trail, first to an awesome lightening streak on the Dix range, then to sunning ourselves on a ledge when the skies cleared. We got up close and personal with some laid back beavers who chewed the bark off a twig not ten feet from us in Giant's Washbowl! We continued to the Roaring Brook Trail, stopped to look at the falls from the top, and reached the parking lot in time for one of us to cadge a ride back to car, sharing the back seat with a big, friendly dog. 3 Participants: Wayne Richter, Helen Hokula, and Nick Ringelberg.

Marcy, Gray and Skylight   Sun, Jun 30, 2013, Cole Hickland
- With the rain we had been getting and the potential for more of the same, we didn't know what to expect. As it turned out, the rain held off until the drive home so we dodged that bullet. We did, however, keep hearing from hikers headed out about the floating logs we would have to cross. We finally got to them and it was kind of fun balancing on logs knowing the water was as deep as a hiking pole. We all made it across with no problem. Frank even showed off some dance moves on the way over. After a long hike in to Lake Tear we had a quick snack and headed up Gray. The view from the top gave us a look at where we were planning to go, both Marcy and Skylight were plain to see. We then headed down to Four Corners to drop packs and head up Skylight. It was hot but the breeze on top kept the bugs away and cooled us off. It is hard to beat the view of Haystack from Skylight. After lots of pictures, we headed down to Four Corners to pick up our packs and make the big climb up Marcy. We had some tired hikers at that point, but a steady pace got us to the top to enjoy yet more views and another mini-picnic. Then we headed down the other side where shortly after we got off we looked back to see this sheet of rain move in and hit the top. It was cool to be able to watch that without getting hit by more than a few drops. - What a great way to celebrate the 4th of July - hiking up Pillsbury Mt. in the Adirondacks! The dirt road on the way to the trailhead was a bit washed out, making the drive in an adventure in itself. - Well it happened again. It was another great day in the Sewards, only this time it was Seymour. We started off on the Ward Brook Trail, also known to us as the Mud Trail. We reached Ward Brook Lean-to, where I told the group how Steve Mackey and 'Jungle' Jim Mosher have take care of it for over 20 years. A little past there we picked up the herd path. Wow. I've never climbed it without snow. Our group was spread out on the way up, but soon everyone was enjoying summit views from different spots. After our lunch break we headed back and did our last break at the lean-to where Jen got a great group shot. We made it out with daylight to spare. - This trip was lead by Jim, Licia and Steve while Mo's shoulder recoups! They paddled upstream to the Spier Falls dam on the Hudson River. The current was probably a little stronger and the water level a little higher due to the many storms of early summer. But the predicted storm for this evening held off and the group was able to enjoy the warm evening on the water. - Great weather (for a change), very little mud, a seldom used trail, and an excellent group made for a good hike up Phelps Mt via the herd path at the Klondike Lean-to. I think everyone was surprised how quickly and easily we got to the summit. A little breeze at the top made it very comfortable and kept any bugs at bay. - It was a beautiful summer day for hiking and for eating blueberries as this wet summer allowed for ample large and early blueberries. So we paused numerous times on the climb to partake of our dessert first. - After a dry week, we were treated to trails far less muddy than recently. We made the climb to Wright just as the clouds lifted off Algonquin. Then, up to Algonquin itself for lunch and gradually lifting cloud cover that eventually revealed Marcy and much of the Great Range. Next it was over to Iroquois. The new bridging more than lives up to its billing as a great enhancement. Imagine getting to Iroquois with dry boots and no mud on the legs! - This week the Mackey's lead the trip for Mo again! They lead a one-way trip with the current along the Feeder Canal from Glens Falls to Hudson Falls. This trip was during that unbearable heat and they chose this trip because it's fairly shady. The water was again high and faster than normal, plus a downed tree created an obstacle to be avoided or dealt with! The group saw a turkey vulture eating and some ducks. Jayne pointed out remnants of an old canal boat at the bottom of one section of the canal. Santanoni ,Panther & Couch   Sat, Jul 20, 2013, Mike Fuller
- This is my second ADK Santanoni hike and it turned out great. We started out with overcast skies but that was fine because it kept the temperature down. Steve Mackey came on this hike just to do trail work. He had been up just a few weeks before. After leaving the beaver dam we hiked into the clouds and lost our view. Soon we came to the intersection of Panther where we dropped our packs and went over to the peak. There is something beautiful about the way the fog whips through the alpine; it's like ghosts of hikers past. Soon we regrouped and snacked for our trip to Couch. We made good time until we got to the swamp and found the mud! We had a little slowdown, but then it was off to the summit where everyone was glad to get that one off their list. We looked around and noticed that it looked as though the sky was going to break. On our way back, at our first viewing area of Duck Hole we could see for miles. And hey, the rest of the day is going to be just great! Back to Times Square and then we were off to Santanoni. We made quick time of this and soon everyone was there with their cameras and taking in the beautiful views. Cecilia and Aaren noticed that Santanoni was spelled S-A-N-T-A-N-O-N-N-I. Those pictures will be a collector's item. Soon we were off, down the new old trail where we started to see Steve's handy work (good job!). He must have done at least 50 drainages and water bars and cut quite a few blow-downs. Back down to the main trail we ran into Steve at the big bridge that needed repair. He said he was tired and never did so much work in one day. We were soon back to the parking lot with extra daylight. Congratulations to Marya and Eniko for their Marshall 46er finish later that week; good job girls! - A rugged hike up and over Ruby Mt. to almost Brown Pond (we missed it by that much!). My bearing was off, the bugs were super bad, and the weather was changing fast so we cut this one short and headed back over Ruby to our starting point. - This week the Mackey's were kind enough to open up their camp on Glen Lake for a potluck barbeque after the paddle. The group launched from the public ramp and paddled around part of the lake. The resident osprey flew overhead and the group saw their nest and one of the osprey posed for the group out on a branch. After packing up the boats, the group headed to the deck on the Mackey's camp and enjoyed each other's company under the beautiful skies and in perfect temperature and great views. - We had several kayakers attend, that normally kayak with the Capital District Kayakers Group (Sea Dogs). We put in, in the Hudson, near the Harry Betar Park in South Glens Falls and then paddled upstream as far as the Dam, near the beginning of the Feeder Canal Trail. We then turned around (and got the sun out of our eyes) and got to take advantage of the current. - The people, weather and a 46er finisher made Allen another great summer hike. With a first thing in the morning Hudson foot-soaking then we started with our hiking boots. I sure miss the floating bridge at Lake Jimmy. For many this was their first time to Allen. I told my story of my first winter hike to Allen with legendary hike leader Ron Lester who named the peak 'The Big Nasty' but that is just in the winter. With the combination of old logging roads and well worn trails it made for an enjoyable time to Skylight Brook. A short break, a warning of the Red Slime and we were on our way up. The slide treated us to some first views. Wow! The Red Slime was not as bad this year! Soon we were all on the summit. Now, to celebrate everyone's first time on Allen. Congratulations to Cecilia for her 46er finish and to the others for adding another peak to their list. After a champagne toast and lunch we headed back, where we passed many hikers headed up. I stopped for a short swim in the Hudson, we got out with light to spare. - It was a warm evening, but nice on the Hudson River just upstream of the Feeder Canal Dam. The water was smooth as glass, which was quite a contrast with the conditions last year when we paddled this section with almost white caps! We paddled up to the 'booms,' used during the logging years on the river. On our return trip we were treated to a fairly close swim by a couple of beavers. One came within a few yards of George's boat. Saddleback and Basin   Sat, Aug 24, 2013, Wayne Richter
- Wow! Probably the best hiking weather of the summer, two great peaks and a wonderful group made for a fabulous day. We were lucky enough to get a few places in the Garden lot and several of us ferociously guarded the one remaining spot while we shuttled two cars to and from Marcy Field. A cold front the night before gave us a chilly start to the day but brilliant sunshine and some time on the trail soon had us warmed up. A snack at Johns Brook Lodge and and another at Slant Rock, and we were on our way up the first ascent along the Shorey Short Cut. We rested and regrouped at the junction with the Range Trail, then made the big climb to Basin. We spent nearly an hour on the summit enjoying the sun and the view or, in JP's case, a snooze before heading for Saddleback. The climb was formidable as always but, working together, we got everyone up in good form. - Little rain was forecast, but down clouds and dripping trees made up for it. We were sopped in no time. But a gorge is a great place to be when no views are to be had, even though the wet rock was not as user friendly as usual. Lost gorge is dramatic, and beautiful, and they liked it! This day needed an exemplary group, appreciative, full of good humor, and looking for adventure. - Despite a socked in summit and threatening rain showers, it was a warm summer day with no bugs and all six of us realized that there are actually four summits, not three, on Pharaoh. Dial/Nippletop   Sat, Sep 7, 2013, Bill Morse
- No rainout today. A good climb up Bear Den and Dial, although some members started out way too fast. We paid later for that quick start. Other than that, a good climb to Dial and onto Nippletop. Good fall like temperatures and no sign of any bugs. A bit windy on top of Nippletop, but not much off the summit. The trip down to Gill Brook was steep at first, but it is downhill rather than up and down. Gill brook was very low but still looked inviting for a dip. But no takers, although some members want to come back and picnic by the brook. Trips always end with the never ending Lake Road. Monday Geocache   Mon, Sep 9, 2013, Sarah King and Maureen Coutant  
- Well, once we arrived at county home bridge in Warrensburg to begin our paddle on the Schroon River, our group of six paddlers soon became a group of five as Mo discovered that Jim had taken her paddles out of the car! We missed you Mo! So our group of five set out to paddle upstream and look for some geocaches. Checking the water level on the gauging station website, and seeing that the water was quite low, I put a call in to Licia to bring her garden hoe. That might seem like an odd request but many of the caches placed on the Schroon are small tubes or pill bottles Ziptied to branches over the river. Having taken this trip last year, we learned that a garden hoe was an ideal tool to grab those branches and reach the caches. The weather was great and we enjoyed a leisurely paddle and managed to find 10 caches as we paddled upstream. Many we were able to log from the seat of our kayaks but a couple required getting out on an island or on the shoreline. Thanks to Brian and Licia for doing the dirty work! We returned to the bridge and enjoyed homemade banana bread compliments of Licia and some delicious brownies made by Jeanne. A great trip with great company. - I actually did this trip a week early on 9/5, but intended to do another trip the following week on 9/10. Appointments and weather got in the way on the scheduled week ... so it was good we got out the week before. We paddled on the downstream section from the Spier Falls Dam on the Hudson. This section is always so nice with little boat traffic and surrounded by mountains. Dix and Hough   Sat, Sep 14, 2013, Wayne Richter
- What I think was the clearest air of the summer treated us to terrific views. From the summit of Dix we even saw the bridge on Lake Champlain. With a trip to Hough in between, we had two very quite different experiences on Dix. On the way in, clouds partially covered some of the higher summits and made for interesting patterns all around. On the way out, the clouds had lifted to give us a bright Great Range and clarity as far as the Santanonis. Our trip over and back to Hough was wonderful – the climb back up the ridge to Dix's Beckhorn is one of my favorites. Add a little adventure with a yellow jacket nest on the trail, and we had a great day. Beenies Brook Slide - Lower Wolf Jaw   Sat, Sep 21, 2013, Steve Mackey
- We started from the Garden under partly sunny skies. Hoping for a shorter walk in, we gave the South Side Trail a try and found Johns Brook low enough for a safe, easy crossing. Bennies Brook Slide is marked by a huge cairn, but the debris below the slide removed any doubt. The slide began gently but soon steepened. Other than some slippery algal spots where the water was running, our ascent went well. We initially had fine views of early fall color across the Johns Brook Valley. As we went up, though, the clouds came down and we were soon socked in with high winds that made us think more of the middle of November. Surprisingly soon, we reached the headwall near the top of the slide, and exited into the woods via a herd path to the left. Fifteen minutes later, we were on the summit of Lower Wolf Jaw with only the clouds and the wind for company. As we descended from Wolf Jaw Notch, the skies cleared, the wind dropped and mid-September returned. We did some rock hopping along beautiful Johns Brook on our way back to complete the day. 2 Participants: Steve Mackey and Wayne Richter.

- The forecast for our little outing looked pretty dreary. Not wanting to give in to the rain, the hike went on as planned though I did push the meet time back a little. Once the group gathered, they had the option of the short & steep trail or the longer & more gradual trail. Short & steep won and we were off to the Ausable Club. As we made our way toward Keene Valley, the skies were clearing up to a vibrant blue with brilliant fall colors all around us. So much for that rain! It was a beautiful fall day with the promise of potential cloud cover as time ticked on. At our first viewpoint we were treated to a rainbow in front of the Great Range! The trail was tricky with wet rocks, roots and leaves but we made our way up without incident. The summit was windy and had a winter chill. We bundled in layers, enjoyed a quick refuel and got some photos. A stealthy ninja snuck up on us followed by a shirtless man in shorts (it was really cold up there!). You just never know what you're going to see in the Adirondacks! After a hasty retreat to lower levels we got a group shot and made great time back to the cars enjoying typical 'trail talk.' What hike up Noonmark Mountain wouldn't be followed up by coffee and pie at the Noonmark Diner? - This week we paddled in the Dunhams Bay section of Lake George for a little while and then headed into the wetland area. When we were out in the bay we had to paddle around a scuba diving area. They were just packing things up and said they were pulling milfoil ... or looking for it. They said there was plenty of it there. Too bad. We retreated back to the wetland to avoid the waves and had a nice paddle. Big Slide via The Brothers   Sat, Sep 28, 2013, Reg Prouty
- Even though we arrived at the garden parking lot at 7:20 A.M. we discovered the lot had filled up the night before at 9:00 P.M. So we drove to Marcy Field and got the shuttle. As the shuttle does not go all the way back to the garden when the lot is full as they say they cannot turn it around we were left off a few tenths of a mile down the road. We began our hike at 8:00 and 4 1/2 hours later arrive at a crowded summit with about 50 people on it. Reg played the Star Spangled Banner on his pocket trumpet and Oh Canada as there were about 80% Canadians up there. Since the men knew we could not make it back by 6 P.M. to get the shuttle, the ladies who were faster said they would leave the summit at 1:20 and we arranged to meet them at 7:15 in the Garden. The guys returned via the Slide Brook Trail and the Phelps trail arriving at the garden at 6;45. It was a bright sunny gorgeous day to enjoy the views of the Great Range. Marshall Peak and Plane Crash Site   Sat, Oct 5, 2013, Mike Fuller
- This hike filled up early and had a waiting list. We started in at Upper Works under gray skies but as an upbeat group. October gave us plenty of color and with a fairly dry trail we were soon at the Henderson Monument. Calamity Pond with the tree line disappearing into the low clouds makes you enjoy any kind of Adirondack weather. Off to Flowed Lands and then to Herbert Brook where we started our climb. The brook with little flow gave us gave us easy going, soon my favorite spot, the alpine bog. There's something beautiful about the mist moving though this area. Getting close to the summit, I started to hear cheers; Nancy Kass had finished her 46. 'Congratulations Nancy!' She had done the 46 in less then a year and her daughter Katie was there to see her mom finish. We had a champagne toast, took photos, ate lunch, and then we were off to the plane wreck. Cold Brook Trail was dry compared to last year. At the plane there were plenty off photos and Tom had a copy of the crash history. Then we were off to Lake Colden, with a break at Flow Land Lean-to, and out. Hey! it never rained and we got out with daylight to spare. - This week we decided to stick close to home and explored some areas of French Mtn that we haven't been to. We wandered around the south side of the mountain and found three or four geocaches. I think two new ones for Sarah and a couple of older ones for the rest of us. We tried to cut some corners on the way out and wound up having to cross the stream to get back to the bike trail. - This week we paddled on the Hudson River from the launch under the Northway near Exit 18 up river. The group split up and some paddled up to the beaver dam and Hudson Pointe Preserve. The others paddled part way there until turning around and exploring a little backwash area. Herons and turkey vultures were spotted by both groups. - What a great day to be in the Adirondacks. The trail was dry, the sky was blue and my fellow hikers were just a great group of hiking buds. Highlights of this outing were: nice fall colors, a helicopter flying over our heads, and hiking with Judy Halstead first time since Alaska 1995. Also, talking with Peter about our years in Vietnam was good. - Well, I still haven't hiked 'just' Skylight. Everybody on the hike was an aspiring 46'er, so we also climbed Gray, on our way by Lake Tear of the Clouds. We had beautiful weather and I wore shorts and a T-shirt almost all day. I think it was one of the busiest hiking days of the year, including the fact that we were two of the last cars being allowed into the LOJ parking lot. We also saw plenty of our Canadian neighbors, but it looked like everybody was climbing Marcy, and we lost all the other hikers when we made the turn towards Mt. Colden. After summiting Gray, we split into two groups since we had various hiking speeds, and darkness was going to be an issue. We passed the fast group on their way down Skylight as we were headed up. They got out to the cars around 7:30 and we had a bit more of an adventure and got out at 10:30. - A Halloween themed hike is what I wanted and that is exactly what I got! It was a small group but everyone was in costume and feeling the Halloween spirit. We hiked up at a nice leisurely pace and enjoyed what was left of the fall colors along the way. There was still a great deal of color left at the lower elevations. Some of us got a little too warm in our costumes to wear them all the way to the top but it was great fun to start out that way. The summit visit was a bit on the chilly side so after a snack, some photos, a ghostly tower story, and a visit to the tower, we retreated back to the cabin. Many of us had brought candy along and were passing it out to other hikers on the summit before our retreat. We had some fun with photos at the cabin then began our trip back down. Along the way there were so many other people heading up. They loved our costumes and thought we were trick or treating so we started passing out candy. This included a huge group of boy scouts that were completely thrilled at the prospect of candy and felt motivated to move a little faster to get to those of us that still had candy left! It was tons of fun for everyone. Special congrats to ten year old Alyssa for not only climbing her first mountain but her first fire tower too! - We started at a comfortably late 10:00. The new DEC trail has one of the nicest footways in the peaks, with abundant switchbacks making easy work of the climb. We took the short spur before the main ridge to the first of the spectacular views. Then it was on to the ridge traverse with stunning views all the way out and back. Cool temperatures, stiff winds, and just a snow flake here and there gave us a taste of the winter to come. - This was the last trip of the 'Tuesday Evening' group for the season due to the lack of sunlight as it gets into the fall. Plus, it gets cold then, so we actually did this trip in the afternoon. We had intended to have lunch in the warming hut and then head out on Moreau Lake, but we found out the warming hut isn't open until later in the season. So on a chilly cloudy day we used the picnic pavilion and then had to take a brisk walk around the lake to warm up! This turned out to be a perfect plan because when we returned to the boat launch the sun was just peaking out from the clouds. Then the wind seemed to be at our backs most of the way around the lake. - The forecast was for cold, wind and some rain. Cedar River Road had a light dusting of snow on our way in to Wakely Dam. By the time we had floundered our way to the summit, two inches of exciting and very wet snow had happened, and we were coldly sopped. But the light, quiet snow that accompanied us down stuck to every leaf edge, branch and blade of grass, and our walk back was a stroll through fairyland. Monday Geocache   Mon, Nov 4, 2013, Sarah King
- Today's caching destination was Dippikill Wilderness Retreat. We headed up route 28 to the Glen and stopped for a quick roadside cache along the Glen Creek. We arrived at Dippikill, checked in at the office, and headed to the parking lot across from the bath house. We followed the yellow Ridge Trail in from the road to start our multi cache. A multi cache is where there are multiple containers with gps coordinates in them leading you to the next hide. We found the trail free of blow down, which Mo had reported finding last year, and very well marked with bright yellow markers. Lots of ups and downs on the trail to the summit and lots of signs at the trail junctions. We found the two stages with coordinates leading us to the final cache at the summit where we enjoyed the view and lunch and of course, some of Licia' homemade snacks! We opted not to follow the trail around the pond and back out but to retrace our steps back to the road. We left there and stopped twice more to grab caches on the way home. Once at a nice swimming hole along River Road and once in a not so picturesque spot. Licia gets the gold star for rock hopping inside a culvert under Dippikill Road to grab a magnetic cache attached to the middle of the culvert. It's always an adventure geocaching! - This week was our first mid-week outing, so we started off short and close by at the Van Dusen Preserve, which is in Queensbury not far from Exit 19 or 20. It's on the side of West Mtn, actually north of the ski area on the same ridge. It's all up and then down and a nice two mile loop that is best to do once the leaves are down. - Winter weather has definitely arrived in the High Peaks region! The group met in Queensbury with a chilly breeze in the air but clear blue skies and the promise of a nice day. Our drive along 73 on our way to the Loj was nothing short of spectacular, as always. I just love seeing those peaks looming above me as I crane my neck and press my face against the window to stare in awe. The mountains were even more amazing with a dusting of snow on the tops and a little more than a dusting on the higher peaks. Arriving at the Loj we were surprised to see that it was already very busy with lower lots filling and full. It was pretty chilly as we geared up and searched for the last person joining our group. She wasn't too hard to find and once we were all gathered, we began the short trip over to sign in for Mt. Jo. The trail was complete with half frozen mud/slush and ice along with a dusting of snow everywhere. To help with traction we erred on the side of caution and donned our micro-spikes. It was a leisurely pace to the summit in under an hour. We were treated to clear views and no wind at all on the summit. I just love the views you get from Mt. Jo for such minimal effort. The group enjoyed a nice snack and photo break before heading back down. We took the short trail up and the long trail back. The long trail was a bit on the wet and muddy side with ice too, it was an adventure to say the least! My little group parted ways at the parking area, Chris would be staying the weekend in Keene while the rest of us headed into Lake Placid for lunch, shopping, and meeting a fellow hiker friend for dinner. - We reached the summit just in time for an early lunch. It was a beautiful late Fall day but due to a slight bite to the wind on top we decided to come down to the ranger cabin to have our lunch on the porch. Reg supplied the musical entertainment on his pocket trumpet. We had to be careful coming back down as there were some icy spots on the bare rocks. - We started off at the Thomas Mt. trailhead in cool temperatures and a light breeze taking the Two Brothers trail up to the junction where we took a right and headed out to the view and then the real summit of Thomas Mt. Returning to the junction we then continued on to the cabin for a brief rest before picking up the Richard Hayes Phillips trail over to Cat Mt. We were pleasantly surprised to be able to spend a few minutes on the summit of Cat even though a stiff breeze had built during the day. - This week we walked/hiked in Moreau State Park. This was one of the first days it was actually cold out with temps in the 30s and a breeze, but it was a sunny day and everyone enjoyed getting out. We walked around the lake then up to the lowest lookout before checking out the area that we visited last winter to see the porcupine tracks and activity. Not much to see this time of year, but neat to see the caves and do a little exploring. Calamity Mountain   Sat, Nov 16, 2013, Jayne Bouder
- Just like 4 years ago, Calamity had a blanket of new snow on the ground and sticking to the trees. Unlike then, the ground wasn't frozen yet. So we were pushing our way up through the snow covered trees and blowdown, around rocks and holes, and up steep spots on soft, unsteady ground. It was a beautiful sunny day, with a nice few views through trees. Nick and Rich took a commanding lead after we caught sight of the summit and began talking about turn-around-time. An hour and 3/10ths of a mile later, they landed us on a large, sloping rock that looked straight down at Calamity Pond, (where we'd started 3 hours and 7/10ths mile earlier)- and over at an amazing, unique view of Skylight, Marcy and Gray, Colden, and the MacIntyres! And we were only 140 ft from the summit! The trip down was even softer, slipperier, and holier, but we still got back to the trail at Calamity Pond before dusk. A full moon rose just before dark. - I had a few people sign up, and then when it got close, almost everybody canceled. Since it ended up being only two of us, we took some tools along and cleared a few blow-downs for good measure. The weather was okay but we lost our views when we got above 3,500 feet. There was about six inches of wet snow up high. The trail was interesting starting out in hardwoods and then open rock much like the 'Brothers.' The trail had a couple of very steep pitches. It definitely was a lot harder than the traditional route up Cascade. 2 Participants: Steve Mackey and Cecila Elwert.

- This week we hiked 2.5 miles up to the waterfall above the Pilot Knob gazebo. Most of us hadn't done that section of the trail in awhile and for some it was a new spot. It had rained a few days earlier, so there was actually a waterfall when most times it is dry this time of year. It was a good time as always and once again I got chatting and missed a turn; luckily others were paying attention! - It was cold! The temperature was in the low 20's with winds blowing 35 - 40 mph at times. There was no escaping the winds on the summit, so not much to say except that it was a cold and fast hike. - This week we did a four mile RT walk along the Bog Meadow Trail in Saratoga. It was the perfect walk to do before getting ready for the holidays. There was a light dusting of snow which covered up some of the uneven trail (an old lumpy railroad track), but that was the only difficulty. - It was a cold and windy day but the key to happy hiking was: dressing for the weather! Everyone seemed to have a good time. Highlights of this outing were watching wildlife like deer, red-tailed hawks and a coyote, and hiking with folks after a year's time. Real nice to hike with ole hiking bud Dan D'Angelico again also. - We had a partly sunny, cold, chilly, and slightly icy day. The cliffs were awesome, from the top and bottom, and there was enough snow to see pine martin, fisher, turkey, bear, and other, smaller animal tracks. - On this day, we set out for the Deer Leap Trailhead to hike to the lean to. This is a trip I've been wanting to do for some time but not being anxious to meet any rattlesnakes, opted to wait until colder weather. We started out at 9:30am. It was chilly as we set out but we were all pulling off layers as we made the climb. Grippers were helpful, especially on some icy patches on the way down. On the way, we found a trio of winter friendly (hanging in hemlocks) caches; Climbing Toward Brown Moutain, Brown Mountain East, and Brown Moutain West. From the last cache, we continued another four tenths of a mile to the lean-to, where we found our last cache (Tongue Rester) and enjoyed some delicious homemade brownies made by Licia. This is a perk of the geocache outings. Homemakde treat! Always a good time with a great group of adventure seekers. - This week we walked along the Hudson River at the Hudson Pointe Preserve. Our mission was to try to do the loop trail across the bridge. We thought we might make it until we reached a point where the river was across the trail with no way to get around it. So we backtracked and walked along the upper ridge trail and approached the bridge from the other direction. This time we were a little closer but the river was across the trail again. But someone had put a board partially across, and with good balance and luck you could make it ... poles helped too. Sydney and Steve did some bridge improvement, but not enough to convince the rest of us to risk it! - This week we did a loop trail of Thomas Mountain by going up the new trail and then down the old trail. There was a little bit of snow that made the woods look lovely, but covered up the ice in places. We were glad for our kahtoola grippers and Eric put them on his shopping list when he lost another brand grippers on the way in. We shared and were able to make it up the trail that way. Those are pricey, but well worth the money for outings with ice! We enjoyed the view from the first lookout and again at the cabin. - Man, was it cold for this outing, but guidance I had in past years from ADK leaders like Jungle Jim Mosher, Jayne Bouder, Ron Lester and others came in handy, and I passed along some things learned along the way from them. We all stayed warmed but didn't stop too long either. Highlights of this hike were watching a huge pileated woodpecker, looking at the old wooden silo, and just being with folks who enjoy the great outdoors like myself. - This week we skied on the XC trail behind the Queensbury Schools. So we skied around the trails and explored a little toward the new trail being worked on to go though the Rush Pond area. - This was the first mountain of the season where we put on snowshoes. This is the farthest mountain north of the Saranac Six. It was a cold, windy day at the summit but the sun was shining. We took several pictures at the top and dropped down off the summit for lunch. We did not climb Azure Mt. as it was getting late in the day.
