Buck Mountain Annual New Year's Day Hike Sat, Jan 1, 2011, Reg Prouty and Bob Aspholm
Fourteen New Year's Day revellers enjoyed a great winter day atop Buck Mountain on
the East Side of Lake George. Singing Auld Lang Syne, lead and directed by Bob Aspholm
and accompanied by Reg Prouty's pocket trumpet, a good time was had by all as we enjoyed
a relaxing lunch atop the mountain as it was a mild day.
Participants : Reg Prouty,
Bob Aspholm, Gail Stauble, Karen Burke, Rob Furlong, Cathy Jo Rogers, Ann Mundy, Rich
Crammond, Jack Whitney, Sandy Yellen, Barb Northrup, Roger Behrens, Jayne Bouder, and
Jenifer Jones.
Noonmark Mt. Sun, Jan 2, 2011, Bill Morse
We had nice weather with almost no wind. Not much snow but plenty of ice. We had to
work our way around some rock areas because of the ice. Great views from the top.
Participants : Helena Nevarez, Terje Kuusk, Sheila Joy, John Susko, Marsha LaPointe, Heidi
Karkoski, and Bill Morse.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Jan 4, 2011, Maureen Coutant
This week we pushed the trip to Wednesday and had a nice sunny day. No snow to be found
within an hour, so we walked through the North Woods of Skidmore. We enjoyed the trails and
many points of interest: the Lion pit (old well remains), stick teepee with swing,
remains of a local ski tow, graffitied water tower and more. We finished off with coffee and
snacks at Uncommon Ground in Saratoga.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Liz Gee, Emilie Gould,
Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Jim Ralston, George Sammons, Bill
Schwarz, and Judith Thomas.
Monthly Geocache Mon, Jan 10, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
Our monthly Geocaching hike this month was to the newly marked Berry Pond Preserve
beyond the Lake George Recreation Center. The 4.44 mile snowshoe was a great workout, as
it had recently snowed and we had to break trail most of the way up to the pond. We looked
for and found four geocaches, which were located at trail junctions and on the trail
around the pond. At the pond, we admired the Heron rookery, and sat on a downed log to enjoy
the sunshine and our lunch. It was a great outing in a new location and was enjoyed by
all.
Participants : Sarah King, Bruce Cushing, Licia Mackey, Carol Walkup and Judith
Thomas.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Jan 11, 2011, Maureen Coutant
This week we XC skied on the groomed trails at the Wilton Wildlife Preserve. You can
check the Preserves website for trail conditions and they were just as advertised. Last
week's snow was groomed and the trail was in good condition. On the way back, the group
split for the hill challenge or the flat by the road. The flat group got back first!
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Mike George, Emilie Gould, Licia & Steve Mackey, George & Irene
Sammons, and Carol Walkup.
YMG - Fire Tower & Grub - Owls Head Mt. Sat, Jan 15, 2011, Jonathan Lane
canceled
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Jan 18, 2011, Maureen Coutant
The weather pushed this trip to Wednesday and we wound up having a bird watching
driving tour of the Important Bird Area (IBA) of Fort Edward. We didn't see the short-eared
owls or too many raptors, but we saw some snow buntings and horned larks as well as a few
other more common birds. Thanks to Laurie LaFond who was our bird watching guide! If
you'd like to visit the area, google Raptorfest, it's March 12th and 13th.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Liz Gee, Diane Hurtt, Sarah King, Eric Kranz, Laurie LaFond, Licia
Mackey, Becky Meath, Anne Paolano, Jim Ralston, Gary Rodd, Gretchen Steen, and Jan
Stephens.
Stillwater Locks Eagle Watch Sat, Jan 22, 2011, Rich Crammond
We did end up snowshoeing and it was a cold start for sure, but it was all worthwhile
because we spotted an adult Eagle in a tree by some open water! It just doesn’t get any better
than that! Thanks to my fellow hikers for sharing this outing.
Participants : Jill
Eaton, Babette Furman, Liz Gee, and Rich Crammond.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Jan 25, 2011, Maureen Coutant
This week we did a snowshoe hike along the red trail at Moreau State Park. It was a
chilly day but we were all comfortable while we were snowshoeing. Ironically, we were
only cold after stopping at the "warming hut." Earlier, the door had been locked and
they weren't able to start the fire. The door was unlocked when we got there and Steve &
George started a fire, but the warmth wasn't quick enough! We ate quickly and got moving
again!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Sarah King, Licia and Steve Mackey, Mickey
Onofrietto, Gary Rodd, and George Sammons.
Dix & Hough Sat, Jan 29, 2011, Ron Lester
This was a classic ?High Peaks winter hike that had it all. Close to 17 miles with
5,000' of climbing had us feeling like we had earned the privledge of topping out on these
two Adirondack beauties. The broken out trail ended at Dix's summit, so we busied
ourselves hammering out and grooming a "sidewalk" over to Hough Peak. Special thanks to
Rich, Jim, Jeff, and Terry (the plowmen) for taking turns at the front. Also thanks to
Rick for sweep duties on the way out. Everyone enjoyed the comraderie, views, scenery,
and a couple of long fast butt-slides descending Dix. Ya Hoooo! I am certain there were
sore, but (clever Ron) satisfied hikers the next day.
Participants : Ron Lester, Rick
Lennox, Rich Vinciguerra, Jim McElroy, Tom Ostrander, Helena Nevarez, Christiane
Mulvihill, Erica Anderson, Jeff Mannion, Terry Marshall, Courtney (her Dad loves her)
Lester, Kevin Cox, Melody Hoffman, and Mike (thanks for those cookies!) Fuller.
Erebus Mountain Sat, Jan 29, 2011, Jayne Bouder
The day was nicely overcast, with flurries. After doodling on Bumps Pond and
lunching at the chimney, we set off for Erebus on the kind of unbroken, deep, snow that makes
bushwacking a pleasure. We found the old overlook and markers, moose scraped maples near the
summit, the (new) summit tree, and a little sun! Then a trumpet called out across the
thicket that guarded the lake views from us, and we retreated back to lighter areas.
Beautiful sunset, great group, great day!
Participants : Jayne Bouder, Rich Myette, Nate
June, and Reg Prouty.
February 2011
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Feb 1, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- We tried to get out before the "big" storm hit, but we had a little fresh snow to play in and might have kept people home and off the roads. A few of us made it to Cronins and the Warren Co. trails in Warrensburg. A couple of us snowshoed on the trials through the woods while the others skied on the golf course. It was great to get out!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Liz Gee, Sarah King, Erik Kranz, and Licia Mackey.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Feb 8, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we snowshoed along the trails in the Lake George Rec area. We saw the refurbished lean-to and continued on along the back trail up Prospect. We only went part way up, but the fresh snow on the trees and along the trail was just stunning. Check out the photo gallery on our website for pictures of this trip and others.
Participants : Carol Collins, Mo Coutant, Margaret Curtis, Liz Gee, Eric Krantz, Laurie LaFond, Bob & Kathy McMahon, Gary Rodd, George Sammons, Sandi Sullivan
Colvin/Blake Sat, Feb 12, 2011, Bill Morse
- Our group of 13 started about 7:30AM with light snow which got heavier the further we went. The trail was well packed and easy to follow. We had no views due to the snow. Thanks to Dan a video of the hike is posted on Youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4atc3dLfKs is the address if you want to view. Thanks to Jim for taking over the hike when the hike leader could not continue.
Participants : Jim Stine, Helena Nevarez, Terje Kuusk, Christine Mulvihil, Kevin Cox, Dan Forbush, Eberhard Burkowski, Wayne Dewey, Laura Dewey, David Charles, Carol Nestor, Bob Reinhart and Bill Morse.
Square Falls Sat, Feb 12, 2011, Rich Myette
- As our group moved up the East Branch of the Sagandaga River we encountered some difficult sections of deep snow on steep terrain. On the ridge over the gorge we took in some nice views down to the river and up to the surrounding mountains. Square Falls was difficult to locate due to extensive ice and snow deeply covering the rivers surface and the water falls. After lunch the group elected to navigate back downstream in the river's gorge which proved to be beautiful and exciting with many ice and snow formations. Upon exiting the gorge we were treated to nearly whiteout conditions which eventually subsided. Jayne, Scott and Rich snowshoed up a small mountain as the others returned home.
Participants were Wayne and Jenifer Jones, Nancy and Bob Buckley, Bob Bradley, Jayne Bouder, Scott Cooper and the leader.
Monthly Monday Geocache Mon, Feb 14, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- This month we found a series of geocaches along the Tongue Mtn trail from Clay Meadow up to the saddle. We thought we'd only do two or three, but wound up finding five or six. The trail looked like it had been snowblown it was so perfectly uniform in width. We had a great day out and Bruce brought some home-made gingerbread to top it off!
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Bruce Cushing, & Sarah King
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Feb 15, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we explored the trail into Berry Pond just west of the Lake George Rec Trails. We snowshoed mostly uphill and finally came to a steep part that really kicked us! We decided to call it a (1/2) day and turn around. We'd gotten enough exercise and would return another time!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Margaret Curtis, Diane Hurtt, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Eric Krantz, Licia Mackey, Bob & Kathy McMahon, Becky Meath, George Sammons
Northwest Bay Uplands Tract Sat, Feb 19, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- Finding the trailhead unplowed, we started from Clay Meadows parking lot. The snow was unbroken, deep, and slippery under a crunchy crust that only the lightweights on MSRs could stay on top of. But we made it up to Middle Mountain anyway, for lunch and a view. Nice day, appreciative group!
Participants : Rob, Nate, and Josh Bedore, Jayne Bouder, Jean Holcomb, Nate June, and Maria Rawson.
Lower Wolf Jaw Sun, Feb 20, 2011, Bill Morse
- A beautiful day for a hike, all sunshine and very little wind. This let us have great views up top. The trail was mostly packed with only a little trail breaking necessary. Sue and Mark went over to Upper Wolf Jaw and also had great trail conditions. They did encounter a fisher at the summit. Is this part of the State's effort to save money by using wildlife as summit stewards? We saw very few hikers for such a nice day. This was Owen's first winter peak. Congrats.
Participants : Owen Grant, Sue Thompson, Mark Regan, Alan Schneider and Bill Morse.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Feb 22, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we returned to the IBA (Important Bird Area) in Fort Edward and walked along the Nature Conservancy trail and then along a nearby snowmobile trail. We didn't see too much bird activity, but it's always good to get out and see new areas! However, I think the area may be haunted as my new hat went mysteriously missing! Beware!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Patty Kervin, Laurie LaFond, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath
March 2011
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Mar 1, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- cancelled -sick day!
Pyramid & Gothics Sat, Mar 5, 2011, Steve Mackey
- Unfortunately, we didn't get any views (other than some blowing snow), but it was a good outing. I remembered that the last half mile up Pyramid was steep, but I was reminded again that it is really steep. It was a little difficult figuring out where the actual summit of Gothics was, but we found it without trouble. Our trail was disappearing quickly due to the high winds and since the summit is big and flat, it would be easy to lose track of the way back. Marsha didn't bring skis, so we got a little separated on the way out, but Mike stayed back with her, and she kept up a quick pace.
Participants : Steve Mackey, Mike Fuller, Pat McCullough, Marsha Noble
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Mar 8, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- After a fresh snowfall, I realized I hadn't skied in Coles Woods yet this winter. We've done so many snowshoes that we hadn't gotten there yet. With warmer temperatures around the corner, we headed to the XC jewel in Glens Falls. We couldn't have been happier that we did. Perfect conditions and weather ... it almost made us wish spring wasn't just around the corner!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Mike George, Licia & Steve Mackey, Becky Meath, Gary Rodd, George Sammons, Bill Schwarz
YMG - Leader's Choice - Fire Tower Sat, Mar 12, 2011, Jonathan Lane
- Canceled - not enough participants for a Winter outing.
Monthly Monday Geocache Mon, Mar 14, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- This month we checked out a new preserve in Saratoga county. The Kalabus-Perry preserve not far from the Wilton Wildlife Preserve. We found 4 geocaches on one side of the preserve and then went to the other side and found a cache which had a mission of telling a tall tale. We tossed out all kinds of ideas - Sarah winds up blinded and carried out on a stretcher made from branches in one version.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Margaret Curtis,Bruce Cushing, Mike George, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Mar 15, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we went snowshoeing at the Van Dusen Preserve a couple of miles from Exit 19. It's a short snowshoe up to a ridge and overlook that is nice to do when the leaves are off the trees. It's a bit of a bushwhack to find the overlook, but worth the effort.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Margaret Curtis, Mike George, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath, George Sammons, Kitty Sconzo
Nundagao Ridge Sun, Mar 20, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- cancelled
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Mar 22, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we tried to do the trail along the Hudson at the Hudson Pointe Preserve. We thought maybe the recent snow and cold weather would firm up the trail and allow us to get to the bridge. It almost did, but the high water swamped the trail and since we didn't bring hip waders we decided to return and take the trail along the ridge. Nice trip anyway and new area for some in the group.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Margaret Curtis, Marsha Fagan, Liz Gee, Mike George, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Licia & Steve Mackey
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Mar 29, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we headed up to the Pilot Knob Preserve and then over to see 'Frankenpine'. I'd never been to the preserve when there was snow, and there was surprisingly little in the woods and at the lookout. We didn't need our snowshoes, but grippers were a must! The lake was still frozen over and we even had a few snow flurries in the air. Yes, the calendar does say it's spring! Then we drove down the road abit and took a short walk to see Frankenpine. It is very well disguised and you'd probably miss it if you didn't know where to look. See photo gallery.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, and George Sammons
April 2011
Almost April Fools hike Sat, Apr 2, 2011, Gary Rodd
- A beautiful sunny day made for a perfect day with a very congenial group! The trail was clear of ice & snow and not much mud. Wild life was abundant: turkeys, wood frogs, one bluebird, peepers, deer, red tailed hawk & garter snakes were spotted. The trip leader was mistaken for a triple-crested, green-breasted, large throated warbler!
Participants : Laurie LaFond, David Delcourt, Mark Small, Melody & Randy Howarth, Liz Gee, Sue Bobbitt, Rich Crammond, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Gary Rodd.
Off the Map Sun, Apr 3, 2011, Jean Holcomb
- The location on this hike was changed because the informal parking at Northwest Bay was still under snow cover. A bad year for clearing parking areas! Instead we went to Berry Pond which is a new jewel in the Lake George Land Conservancy treasure chest. This hike, newly marked, starts at the Lake George Village Rec Area and leads over two loops. The blue loop goes uphill to a lovely view of Lake George while the orange loop goes around Berry Pond which features beavers, a heron rookery and bog plants. Check out this summer destination! Our group enjoyed a relaxed pace and beautiful weather with plenty of picture taking.
Participants : Marcia Hanson, Gina Miller, Pat Desbiens, Dan Monroe, Ray Bouchard, Jean Holcomb.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Apr 5, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- A small group of us braved the light rain to get some exercise on the Harry Betar Walkway along the Hudson River in South Glens Falls. We saw a pileated woodpecker, a variety of ducks, and some canadian geese. The trail was in great shape as always. The SGF DPW always takes such good care of this trail.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Ginger & Joe Kelterborn, Sarah King, Judith Thomas
Midmonth Monday Geocache Mon, Apr 11, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- The snow was barely off the ground, so we stuck to the lower elevations and found a few caches near the Buck Mtn trailhead. We visited Stewarts Ledges and then headed up the trail to Inman Pond to find a cache. Then it was time to head a little ways up the Buck Mtn trail, but a little stream was made to be an obstacle by the early spring snow melt. Sarah, Licia and Judith would not be deterred! Off with the boots and socks and across the stream we went. It added to the adventure and made it memorable! It was also memorable to hear the wood frogs at the parking area! It sounded like 100 of them!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Judith Thomas.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Apr 12, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we walked along the Feeder Canal from Murray Park in Hudson Falls to Ft. Edward. This is the most rural section of the trail, which also takes you past the five combines, which is an impressive lock system. Where the trail T's in Ft. Edward, we headed left until we reached the end. It was a great workout!
Participants : Maureen Coutant, Mike George, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Becky Meath, Anne Paolano, George & Irene Sammons, Diane Sante, Tom Sears, Susan Sheehan, Deb Wood.
Wilton Wildlife Preserve and Park Hike Sat, Apr 16, 2011, Rich Crammond
- Nice cool temperatures, early wildflowers, good people to hike with, and a grand old fire tower to walk by, were all the highlights of this ADK outing in the great W.W.P & P. The participants looked like they were enjoying the outdoors so that was a real plus for me. It just doesn't get any better!
Participants : Mary Alice Nyhan, Don Washburn, Caral Crosman, Jane Kana, Sue Bobbett, Marsha Noble, and Rich Crammond.
GF Bike trail and Prospect Mtn Sun, Apr 17, 2011, Steve Mackey
- I canceled due to cold and rainy weather.
YMG - Peaked Mt. Pond and Peaked Mt. Sun, Apr 17, 2011, Jonathan Lane
- Canceled due to poor weather.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Apr 19, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- Canceled due to Spring Break...and bad weather!
Cat and Thomas Sun, Apr 24, 2011, Jean Holcomb
- There was still some snow in the woods but it was generally a good day to do C and T. I decided to take the road to Cat first and return via the blue trail to Thomas. The blue trail is now very well marked and makes for a charming wander up hill and down between the two peaks. The view off Cat is splendid and the cabin at Thomas is still in good shape and a great spot to relax before heading home. Although the climbing was a little challenging for some of the group we all finished with smiles on our faces.
Participants : Liz Gee, Bill Carpenter, Karen McKenney, Jack Whitney, Kerry Case, Susan Keely, Ravi Verma, Joan Macker.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Apr 26, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This was our Earth Day (a little early) clean up hike. This year we decided to do a little section along the Warren County bike trail with a little side trip up part of French Mtn. Well, during the hike side we wound up missing the turn to the attraction that I was aiming for and decided to hike to the top instead. On the way down we did the side trip to the old Great Escape billboard and picked up at least a couple of grocery store size bags full of garbage each! So now it's a much nicer destination. Still more garbage, but better! Remember to Hike In, Trash Out every time you go out!
Participants : Nancy Burke, Mo Coutant, Mike George, Licia Mackey, Jim Ralston, George Sammons, Bill Schwarz, Chuck Wilkison, Deb Wood.
Moreau Lake State Park Sat, Apr 30, 2011, Reg Prouty
- This was a great day for this hike as the Spier Falls Dam above which we had lunch was roaring at capacity due to high river levels this Spring. We made a loop by approaching on the Cottage hill Trail and returning by the Western Ridge and white marked cutoff trail to the old hotel foundation where we started. A short lunch and playing of a few trumpet tunes rounded out a great day with a great group. Eight hikers: Reg Prouty, Chris Bourgeois, Mary Alice Nyhan, Don Washburn, Judy Halstead,Cathy Corrigan, Tom Denny, and Diane Denny.
Severance Hill Sat, Apr 30, 2011, Lorraine MacKenzie
- Finally a day without rain in the forecast! The bottom of the trail was a little flooded but surprisingly, the trail was pretty dry. The summit offered a wonderful view of Scroon Lake, Paradox Lake & the overflowing Scroon River. This trip was a little unusual. Instead of a foot bridge over the Northway, we tunneled under it. It was a great day in the woods.
Participants : Pat Morgan, John Morgan, Roy Hoffman, MaryAnn Moran, Lorraine MacKenzie.
Rescheduled Upper Schroon River Sat, Apr 30, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- This trip was moved to Garnet Lake because the Schroon River and everything else was at flood stage. We had a beautiful day! The water was high enough that when we got way back in the stumpy, swampy end, we saw male and female mergansers, a very tame young beaver, Canadian geese nesting on a beaver lodge, turtles, herons, and newts. Later, we climbed a middle bump for nice evening views. It was a great place and company!
Participants : Jayne Bouder, Scott Cooper, Rich Myette, Kathy Ryan.
Spring Bird Walk - Peebles Island State Park Sat, Apr 30, 2011, Rich Speidel
- Peebles Island was surrounded by a lot of water today, as the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers were at flood stage. The flooded backwater areas attracted a variety of birds: warbling vireo, ruby-crowned kinglet, and spotted sandpiper, to name a few. We had good views of other seasonal favorites, including great-crested flycatcher, numerous yellow-rumped warblers, and rose-breasted grosbeak – with one of the sweetest songs in the bird world. In all, we identified 36 species on this fair weather day.
Participants : Edna Van Dorsten, Rich Speidel
May 2011
Black Mountain Loop Sun, May 1, 2011, Bill Carpenter and Madeline Kowalik-Bova
- As part of the getting ready for the High Peaks season hikes, after a winter hiatus, Black Mountain Loop is a great warm up, especially with the weather cooperating. Good fun and great folks is always a good recipe for a fine day.
Participants : Trisha, Colleen, Kelly, Katherine, Kathy, Sandy, Joan, Bill, Jack, Dan, Andy and Bill.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, May 3, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we hiked in the Skidmore North Woods to see the wildflowers. The trout lillies, bell flowers, wild oats, trillium, blood root and others that I'm forgetting were all blooming. We also saw wild ginger and a hillside of may apples that was quite impressive. It's always great to visit in the spring to see what's blooming and what other strange things you can find down a side trail!
Participants : Andrea Chartier, Mo Coutant, Martha Devaney, Sarah King, George & Irene Sammons, Chuck Wilkison, and Emilie.
Canary Pond Sat, May 7, 2011, Rich Myette and Jayne Bouder
- cancelled- road to trailhead closed.
Lost Pond and short Bushwhack Sat, May 7, 2011, Rich Crammond
- This was a real nice early spring hike in the Adirondacks. There were no black flies yet and cool temperatures, plus nice sunshine. Lost pond had its share of little floating egg sacks and many salamanders. The trout lilies were starting to bloom also. Highlights of this outing were seeing six beaver dams from one standing spot. Eager Beavers for sure! A great day in the woods.
Participants : Reg Prouty, Skip Kardash and Rich Crammond.
Spring Bird Walk – Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park Sat, May 7, 2011, Rich Speidel
- We had an early start and enjoyed six hours on the trails at Camp Saratoga. The featured bird of the day was the black-throated blue warbler; great views of this songster from the West Indies. Other tropical species observed were kingbird, great-crested flycatcher, solitary and red-eyed vireos, and yellow warbler. Another treat was an extended look at a broad-winged hawk circling above the tree canopy. Add the sights and sounds of several woodpeckers, and we completed a fine trip afield with 38 species.
Participants : Pat Fitzgerald, Mark Janey, Licia Mackey, Joanne Szot, Rich Speidel.
Evening Paddle Tue, May 10, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This year we started our paddle season on the Glen Lake fen (wetland). This was a nice safe place to paddle after all the rain and snow melt had made other areas more treacherous than normal. It was the first time out for most of us and it was a nice relaxing paddle among the channels. We didn't make it quite to the Great Escape, but we did see some remnants of old decorations.
Participants : Dave Avigdor, Mo Coutant, Paul Dietershagen, Bill Glendenning, Licia & Steve Mackey, Anne & Kevin McCullough, Maria Rawson, George Sammons, Bette & Bill Thomas, Chuck Wilkison.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, May 10, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we did a walk along the Feeder Canal from the beginning of the trail to the Rt. 9 bridge. The water was still amazing as it went over both dams, even more amazing than the construction along the Exit 18 corridor!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Mike George, Karen Hurst, Licia Mackey, Bob Powell, Jan Stephens, Joanne Szot.
Spruce Mtn *Firetower * Sat, May 14, 2011, Lorraine MacKenzie
- There was rain in the forecast, how unusual! At least it held off for the entire trip. After a shaky start (we discovered this was not a marked trail), we managed to find our way to the summit. The fire tower itself was in disrepair and an ascent to the top was not possible. Even though we had no panoramic scene at the top, our eyes were treated by the spring flowers (Jack in the Pulpit, Trout Lily, Painted & Red Trillium, Hobblebush and Spring Beauty) that lined the path.
Participants : Ray Bouchard, Ravi Verma, Pauari Kahdi, Judy Halstead, Kate Berheide, Jean Rich, John MacKenzie, Lorraine MacKenzie.
ADK Lake George Property Work Day Sat, May 14, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- Thanks to all that attended, we got the ADK headquarters building looking ship-shape and ready for the summer visitors! Thanks to the Mackeys, Todd Earl, Tom Kenney, Mickey Onofrietto, Jack Freeman, the Nichols family, Charlotte Smith, Jim Ralston, Stan Stoklosa, MaryAnn, and Jim Coutant for always making his great chocolate chip cookies!
YMG - Windham - Catskill High Peak Sun, May 15, 2011, Jonathan Lane
- What an interesting hike! Lots of chipmunks, red efts, and beautiful flowers. The views could have been a bit better due to being a bit socked in, but great company and lots of laughs made up for it. We got rained on a little bit on our return to the trailhead, but nobody seemed to mind much. A great day in the woods!
Participants : Bill Barton, Erica Halbrook, Jonathan Lane.
Spring Bird Walk – Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park Sun, May 15, 2011, Rich Speidel
- The May 15 walk was postponed due to rain. Four inches of rain and six days and later, we had fog, clouds, and occasional light rain, but also some sun. There was good luck early as a bluebird perched around the parking lot. At the pond, we observed a pair of kingbirds on a nest high in a pine tree. Along the trail, we had fine views of several migratory birds, including red-eyed vireo, pine warbler, and eastern wood peewee. Two broad-winged hawks provided a late morning show as they circled and skimmed the treetops. Thanks to our combined group efforts, 42 species were identified.
Participants : Barbara Bave, Jim Myers, Patricia Brennan, Jim Campinell, Patrick Collier, Bruce Goodale, Cathy Hall, Grace Nichols, Edna Van Dorsten, Rich Speidel.
Midmonth Monday Geocache Mon, May 16, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- Torrential rain postponed this trip by a week. We wound up hiking along the Deer Leap trail on Tongue Mtn. We found all the caches that had just recently been placed along the trail. Sarah was glad we didn't also find any rattlesnakes!
Participants : Ed Barget, Mo Coutant, Bruce Cushing, Mike George, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Brian Nichols.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, May 17, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- Canceled due to Art Show and illness!
Lake George 28 hr. Sat, May 21, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- cancelled
Giant Mountain Hike Sun, May 22, 2011, Bill Carpenter
- Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge made for a good start of the High Peaks for the new summer season. The weather was fine. The views were good and the bugs weren't bad. Two hikers got two more peaks towards their 46 which helped to make the day even better!
Participants : Tammara, Marsha, Susan, Sandy, Pat, Aberhard, Jack, Dan and Bill.
Evening Paddle Tue, May 24, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- Due to the high water at the beginning of May, I postponed what is usually the "kickoff" paddle to the end of May. We still had plenty of water to get over most of the beaver dams on our trip between Lake Luzerne and Second Lake. This trip is always a challenge and we've only made it to Second Lake this year and last. We must know how to do it now!
Participants : Dave Avigdor, Mo Coutant, Charlie Czech, Mike George, Bill Glendenning, Licia Mackey, Joy Muller-McCoola, George Sammons, Maria Rawson.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, May 24, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- We had a great day out climbing Hadley with beautiful skies, flowers, and great company! We could have done without the black flies ... but they kept us moving. We even met a poet on the way out in the parking area. What a great place to seek inspiration!
Participants : Ray Boucher, Mo Coutant, Bill Glendenning, Sue Howard, Licia Mackey, Rudy Tomasik, Chuck Wilkison.
Spring Bird Walk – Pack Forest, Warrensburg Sat, May 28, 2011, Rich Speidel
- We had a big turnout on this Memorial Day weekend; nice mix of new members and folks who join us for bird walks each spring. Skies were mostly cloudy, and our return walk to the parking lot was brisk due to an approaching thunderstorm. But we had five hours in the field and saw a good variety of birds, including a loon on Pack Forest Lake, yellow-rumped and black-throated blue warblers, cedar waxwings, kingbirds, and least flycatchers. Seen overhead were ravens, sharp-shinned and broad-winged hawks. We concluded an enjoyable outing with 38 species identified.
Participants : Joanne Armstrong, Bob Bradley, Patricia Brennan, Jim Campinell, Patrick Collier, Coral Crosman, John Good, Bruce Goodale, Cathy Hall, Keith Hall, Marianne Hines, Mark Janey, Eric Krantz, Licia Mackey, Julie Nathanson, Reg Prouty, Carol Schupp Star, Sarah Thomas, Ben Thomas, Edna Van Dorsten, Freida Chapman West, Irv West, Rich Speidel.
Midweek Jaunt Tue, May 31, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week was too hot and buggy for a hike so we got out our boats and paddled on Brant Lake. The recent storms had raised the lake level so much that the you'd have to wade to get to the dock. Luckily we didn't need it. It was a gorgeous day out and the wind held off until the end and even then it wasn't too strong and it felt good.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Ralph DeCristofaro, Anita Dingman, Gail Epstein, Sarah King, George Sammons, Bill Thomas.
June 2011
MacNaughton Mountain Sun, Jun 5, 2011, Joe Murphy and Ray O'Conor
- A nearly 12-hour day, but an adventure had by all. We left the ADK Loj and headed to Wallface Ponds. From there we had a one mile true bushwack on a southwest heading to the summitt of MacNaughton. It was difficult at times, but once we reached the top there were some partially discernable herdpaths, and a false peak, but we did find the true peak with the misspelled sign. Adventure enjoyed by David Crouse, Madeline Kowalik-Bova, Brian Lamos, Joe Murphy, Ray O'Conor, and Wayne Richter.
Buck Mountain Sun, Jun 5, 2011, Lorraine MacKenzie
- It was the perfect day for a hike. Everyone else must have thought so because not only did we see beautiful views of Lake George, but also we met up with many good friends on the summit.
Participants : Ray Bouchard, John Susko, Wendy Hull, Sandy Yellen, Bil Carpenter, Jack Whitney, Mark Rye, Shelly Burke, Lorraine MacKenzie.
Evening Paddle Tue, Jun 7, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we paddled along the Feeder Canal from the beginning in Glens Falls to the take out in Hudson Falls. It's always an interesting trip through the city of Glens Falls - under bridges, culverts, and even part of a Finch Paper building. We were even treated at the end with two hot air balloons flying overhead. Pretty Cool!
Participants : (Can't find my list...will update when desk is cleaned off!)
Midweek Jaunt Tue, Jun 7, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we walked along the trails in the Saratoga State Park. We mostly avoided the bugs and stayed in the shade to avoid the heat as well. This was a different trip than we normally do, but we still visited the geyser and some of our other favorite spots. Then we headed to Congress Park and the Bread Basket and enjoyed lunch overlooking the park.
Participants : Andrea Chartier, Mo Coutant, Licia Mackey, George & Irene Sammons, Dianne Sante, Bill Schwarz.
YMG - Dix - High Peak Sat, Jun 11, 2011, Jonathan Lane and Kiki Kelly
- This was definitely a wet hike! It rained for most of the hike, but our spirits weren't dampened. Unfortunately, no views were to be had from the summit, except for thick clouds surrounding us. But good company and plenty of laughs made up for it. We also helped carry a few items a few miles in to help a local Eagle Scout with his Eagle Project of putting in a new latrine.
Participants : Amanda Brinton, Jackie Cordell, Meghan Drastal, Joan Ferguson, Jonathan Lane, Rachel Luch, Gina Miller, Sharon Shieh, Joanne Walczak.
Vanderwhacker Mt. *Fire Tower* Sat, Jun 11, 2011, Rich Crammond
- Canceled due to bad weather.
Giant & Rocky Peak Ridge Sun, Jun 12, 2011, Joe Murphy and Wayne Richter
- Hike cancelled due to rain.
Birding Field Trip - Washington County Grasslands Sun, Jun 12, 2011, Laurie LaFond and Rich Speidel
- In the midst of another rainy weekend, we had good luck during the morning walk and drive around the grasslands, a designated Important Bird Area. It rained just hours before, and started again as we ended at noontime. Fortunately, the morning weather was dry, overcast and comfortably cool. We saw most of the grassland birds on our wish list: two northern harriers, eastern meadowlarks (both at-risk species), kestrels, and red-tailed hawk. The attractive bobolink was a common and welcome sight; a pleasant song from the grasses with flashes of black and white. We discovered a variety of other songbirds (including bluebird, mockingbird and brown thrasher), and completed a fine tour of the open country with 41 species.
Participants : Jim Campinell, Patrick Collier, Pat Fitzgerald, Liz Gee, Alan Gee, Mark Janey, Licia Mackey, Merle Nichols, Scott Nichols, Kathleen Swantak, Laurie LaFond, Rich Speidel.
Monthly Monday Geocache Mon, Jun 13, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- This month we hiked Sleeping Beauty Mtn on Lake George. The road from the Hogtown parking lot to Dacy Clearing parking lot was closed, so we had to walk in and that added 2+ miles to the trip. We found many caches on this trip including a cache series that Sarah and I have been wanting to do for years. We have a very creative cacher in our area who did a great job on a cache called "Sleeping Beauty - Prince Charming." Look it up! We were also treated to seeing a mother grouse who came out on the trail to lead us away from her baby.
Participants : Mo Coutant, Susan Howard, Diane Hurtt, Sarah King, Chuck Wilkison.
Midweek Jaunt brunch Tue, Jun 14, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- We had beautiful weather for our picnic brunch at the Pilot Knob gazebo. An easy hike up and then we shared fruit, snacks, and brownies and conversation before returning to the parking lot. Thanks to all who came out on the trips from last fall to this trip. You served as my motivation to get out and explore the area and were great company! Enjoy the summer and look through the calendar for other ADK trips to attend.
Participants : Andrea Chartier, Mo Coutant, Ralph DeCristofaro, Ann Fisher, Mike George, Licia Mackey, Jim Ralston, George Sammons, Bill Schwarz, Judith Thomas.
Henderson Lake Sat, Jun 18, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- Everyone wanted to camp, so we did, near the lean-to. Scott Ryan and Terry had never even been to the Upper Works - what a treat! This place is spectacular, and so was the weather! We hiked up into Indian Pass after seeing it from the lake, on Saturday. We saw tumbled huge rocks and contorted trees, towered over by the dark Wallface cliff, and backlit by late afternoon sun. Sunday wind whipped the lake into a froth, and discouraged biting bugs. We did a leisurely tour of Henderson's irregular shoreline, including all the inlets. We saw cliffs, swamps, rocks, towering pines, overhanging cedars, puffy clouds, mountains ... we slowed down and stopped at many beautiful places, found diving ospreys, a nesting loon, fishing lures, big tadpoles, blooming pitcher plants ... but not my hat. Great trip! Great group!
Participants : Jayne Bouder, Scott Cooper, Terry Fluri, Scott Ryan.
Killington & Pico (Green Mountains) Sun, Jun 19, 2011, Joseph Murphy and Alison Darbee
- After a little change in the starting location of the hike due to a bridge out on the trail road, we spent the day hiking along the AT/LT and the Sherburne Pass. The weather was beautiful and we had our lunch on the top of Killington and then proceeded over to Pico. Fun was had by Kelly Belenchia, Alison Darbee, Kathy McAuley, Dan Moellman, Joe Murphy, Marsha Noble, Margaret O'Keefe, Mark Rye, and Linda Veraska.
Lake George - Bike trip Tue, Jun 21, 2011, Steve Mackey
- I can see this being an annual event. All four activities had a pretty good turnout. We were the first ones to Lake George, but it was mostly downhill, and after our little picnic, we still had to ride home. We stopped at several historic monuments and Roger taught us some interesting history.
Participants : Patricia Lockwood, Roger Fulton, Steve Mackey.
Longest Day Event - Evening Outings Tue, Jun 21, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- Thanks to ADK member Eric Krantz for allowing our paddling group the opportunity to launch from his home on Lake George. This gave us a chance to paddle along a different section of the Lake George shoreline. We had quite the flotilla and although we didn't reach our intended destination, we all enjoyed being out on the water on a beautiful evening. Then we made it down to Shepards Park and met up with fellow ADKers after their trips for a picnic dinner! Thanks to all who came out and made our 1st Longest Day Event a success!
Participants : Joanne Armstrong, Andrea & Ken Chartier, Mo Coutant, Charlie & Linda Czech, Anna & Jim Dickson, Kassie & Paul Dietershagen, Mike George, Bill Glendening, Judith Halstead, Phoebe Jackson, Sue Jefts, Eric Krantz, Joy Muller-McCoola, Anne and Kevin McCullough, Louis Palmer, Jim Ralston, George Sammons, Jim Schaad.

- Canceled due to inclement weather.
YMG - Eagle & Balsam - Catskill High Peaks Sun, Jun 26, 2011, Jonathan Lane and Kiki Kelly
- We started out with an amazing breakfast at Sweet Sue's down in the Catskills and even got to meet Sue herself, who is also a hiker. We then headed for the trail. Great weather, some annoying bugs, a few chipmunks, song birds, and woodpeckers. No views from these peaks, but great company and lots of laughs made up for it. There was also chocolate-covered bacon and a pepino melon to snack on!
Participants : Bill Barton, Adeline Brym, Jonathan Lane, Rachel Luch, Mark Rye.
Street & Nye Sun, Jun 26, 2011, Lorraine MacKenzie
- We hiked on the rain date of July 9. Only three of the original 20 who signed up could make it but it was definitely worth the delay. It was sunny with a nice breeze and a comfortable temperature; ideal conditions! These mountains just have a bad rep about the views, or lack thereof. We had time to investigate the summits thoroughly and actually found great views from both peaks! Santanoni, Panther, Algonquin and Iroquois, among others, were in full view just a few yards south west of the actual summit on Street and Big Slide, Cascade and Porter were visible looking due east on Nye.
Participants : Karen Burka, Johnny MacKenzie, Lorraine MacKenzie.
Pitchoff Mt. Loop Sun, Jun 26, 2011, Sandy Yellen
- The weather wasn't always the best but we still had some views and lots of fun. By the time we got to Stewarts for our little social, the sun was shining on us. What a great group of hikers!
Participants : Jan Carlson, Marvin Fine, Cecilia Elwert, Jack Whitney, Kathy Quoi, Dan Monroe, Sandy Yellen.
July 2011
Mount Marcy Sun, Jul 3, 2011, Joe Murphy and Ray O'Conor
- It was a very patriotic weekend hike, even though we had overcast weather and our heads were in the clouds on the summitt, but the clouds finally broke for our visit to Indian Falls on the return trip! We celebrated the holiday with a group photo sporting a large United States flag and many hand held ones. The adventure was shared by Andrew Conley, Joanne Conley, Colleen Downing, Cole Hickland, Susan Keely, Jeanne Michela, Joe Murphy, Jamie Newton, Marsha Noble, Ray O'Conor, Mark Rye, Dan Stec, and Joanne Walczak.
"Trail-gating" Pillsbury Mt. - Fire Tower Mon, Jul 4, 2011, Jonathan Lane
- Great weather, awesome company, and yummy food! The cook-out back at the trailhead made for a great end to a nice hike.
Participants : Fatima Hammed, Sue Howard, Debbie Hummel, Nathan June, Pallavi Kahai, Jonathan Lane, Patricia Rechberger, Greg Stephens, Lynn Stephens, Ravi Verma, Donna Zimmer, Mitch Zimmer, and Mimi Zucker.
Evening Paddle Tue, Jul 5, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- We had a beautiful evening to paddle upstream on the Hudson from the boat launch a few miles south of Lake Luzerne. We paddled up to Lake Luzerne and had quite a workout to get past the current from where the Sacandaga was emptying into the Hudson. Once we passed that, we had a nice picnic dinner on the rocks below Rockwell Falls. It was neat to be there after seeing that area submerged earlier in the year after the crazy run-off/spring rain. Nice quick trip with the current on the way back!
Participants : Dave Avigdor, Mo Coutant, Kassie & Paul Dietershagen, Bill Glendenning, Sarah King, Licia & Steve Mackey, Joy Muller-McCoola, Larry Murello, Suzanne Pierce, Jim Ralston, George Sammons, Brooke Smith.
High Peak, Redfield Sat, Jul 9, 2011, Alison Darbee
- We had a great group of strong hikers out for this hike. The weather cooperated and we got both Redfield and Cliff for everyone in the group working on their peaks! Thanks for making this a great day in the woods everyone! And thanks to Wayne for Co-Leading this hike! Particpants: David Crouse, Theresa Blanchard, Erica Bourdeau, Chris Long, Jamie Newton, Helena Nevarez, Marsha Noble, Yun Shieh, Klaus Summerlatte, Wayne Richter, Alison Darbee.
Hudson River Paddle Sat, Jul 9, 2011, Dave Avigdor and Joy Muller-McCoola
- This was the perfect summer day! The river was high enough to carry us over rocky flats and warm enough to swim; the wind was at our backs. This was 15 miles of beautiful green and blue views as we meandered down river with a bald eagle checking on our progress.
Participants : David Avigdor, Beth Johansen, Gary McCoola,Joy Muller-McCoola, Larry Murello, Julie and Irwin Nathanson, George Sammons.
Hudson Pointe Nature Preserve Sun, Jul 10, 2011, Roger Fulton
- Three of us enjoyed a great 2.5 mile trek checking out wildflowers and the views of the Hudson River. A nice "walk in the woods" with great views and good company.
Participants : Debora Hummel, Sue Benedetti, Roger Fulton.
Blueberry Pancake Hike Sat, Jul 16, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Jim Coutant
- We had a beautiful day hiking up to "blueberry field" on a Lake George Mtn. The adults had trouble keeping up with the kids on the way up and slowing them down on the descent! We had the kids look for: wintergreen, sweet fern, red mushrooms, monster rocks, and a cave to slow them down and keep them interested! Of course, blueberries and pancakes on top with a great view of the lake was the highlight!
Participants : Abbey, Bob & Saige Carpenter; Gen, Jim & Mo Coutant; Brendan & Reilly Doller; Anne, Candace, Nia & Rodger Hurley; Sarah King; Brett, Katelyn, Lyndsey & Stephen Lange; Licia Mackey; Claudia Mahoney; Clark, Cynthia, & Michael Seeley
Hour Pond Sat, Jul 16, 2011, Rich Crammond
- Over all this was a nice day to be in the Adirondacks. The bugs were out and it was hot but we made the best of it and had a good day in the woods. The highlight of this hike was seeing the fish jump up from the water at Hour Pond and hiking with some real nice rugged people and old hiking bud, Chuck Gibson. Thank you all for sharing this day. It just doesn't get any better!
Participants : Karen Burka, Ann Gibson, Chuck Gibson, Rich Crammond
Street & Nye Sun, Jul 17, 2011, Joe Murphy
- Many thanks to Wayne Richter for joining as Co-leader the day of the hike. A great day had by all; it was a fun hike and very hot new the summitts with the bright blue skies and sun shining down. A fun lunch was had at the juntion to the two peaks. Those who hiked included Dave Acquavella, Colleen Downing, Paul Etu, Erica Halbrook, George Haviland, Fran Herve, Denise McQuade, Joe Murphy, Wayne Richter, and Pete Sage.
Armstrong & Upper Wolf Jaw Sun, Jul 17, 2011, Lorraine MacKenzie
- We had the pleasure of encountering two waterfalls and spectacular views from two summits. One of the novice hikers experienced the overwhelming assistance from a few of the veteran hikers. It was a great day in the woods.
Participants : Mark Rye, Joanne Walczak, Klaus Sommalatte, Rich Holm, Dick Smith, Susan Keely, Ravi Verma, Sandy Yellen, Lorraine MacKenzie.
Monthly Monday Geocache Mon, Jul 18, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- Cancelled due to T-storm forecast!
Evening Paddle Tue, Jul 19, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- We got out before the heat wave hit and had a very pleasant paddle along the Hudson River. We launched from the park between Exit 17 and 18 that you see while you're on the Northway and paddled upstream to the "very impressive beaver dam." Andrea and Ken actually saw a beaver. We also saw some herons, including a green heron. Great evening out as usual!
Participants : Dave Avigdor, Andrea & Ken Chartier, Janet & Rene Clarke, Mo Coutant, Rosemarie & Todd Earl, Mike George, Licia & Steve Mackey, Joy Muller-McCoola, Larry Murello, George Sammons, Mike Shoemaker, Kathy Sonnabend, Jan Stephens.
Raquette Lake Sat, Jul 23, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- A fishing derby crowded the village, slowing our launch, and the lake was plenty windy as we headed for Tioga Point, via Big Island and Pine Knot. We settled at a quieter, primitive camp on nearby Eldon Bay, with nice winds and a sand bar for night swimming. Sunday's best swimming was at the Needles, and the Hens and Chicken Islands sported seven roosters - free ranging! We found the floating loon nest, took a nice walk along the trail to West Mountain, and found some nice, icy spring water. Congratulations to Joe and Karen, on their first, and sticky, canoe camping experience! We had two beautiful days!
Participants : Jayne Bouder, Joe and Karen Burka, Scott Cooper, Scott and Kathie Ryan.
Glens Falls Area Evening Bike Ride Wed, Jul 27, 2011, Ellen DuBois
- Great Ride! We had five participants this time. The weekly rides have been fun. More riders are always welcome!
Participants : Ellen DuBois, Tom Dubois, Hope Caruso-Adler, Joanne (last name unknown), Steve Mackey.
YMG - Mount Marshall - High Peak Sat, Jul 30, 2011, Jonathan Lane and Kiki Kelly
- We had a huge group for this awesome hike, so we split into two groups. We visited the memorial, took in the views at Flowed Lands, then spent a few minutes at the scenic bridge a little past the turn up to Marshall before back-tracking and heading up the mountain. Lots of bright green moss and refreshing waterfalls kept us company on our trek to the summit, where we enjoyed yummy cookies and beautiful views.
Participants : Linda Acierno, Katherine Bannigan, Jackie Cordell, Colleen Downing, Ellen DuBois, Bill Farstad, Mary Farstad, Amy Fazio, Erica Halbrook, Marianne Hines, Dan Kane, Kiki Kelly, Dan Kemp, Jonathan Lane, Renee Melfi, Pete Sage, Mark Stanley, Dan Stec, Joanne Walczak, Nate Walrath, Venus Webb.
Mt. Ellen & Mt. Abraham (Green Mountains) Sun, Jul 31, 2011, Joe Murphy and Alison Darbee
- Unfortanetly some last minute cancellations made this a small group, but the hike in VT was greatly enjoyed by all, and so was the fabulous weather! We hiked from Lincoln Gap over Abraham, Little Abe, Lincoln, Nancy, and to Ellen...and then back again. Those in attendance included Walt Addics, Alison Darbee, Joe Murphy, Ray O'Conor, Margaret O'Keefe, Wayne Richter, and Jay Summerson.
August 2011
Evening Paddle Tue, Aug 2, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week the group started at the park/launch at the end of Big Boom Road in Queensbury and paddled down the Hudson to the Feeder Canal dam. This dam is where the group had paddled up to the prior week, so we were connecting the dots. We had already done the section from the launch in the other direction, so we only have a few more sections of the Hudson to do before we'll have paddled from Thurman down to South Glens Falls. This is a quiet section of the Hudson (once you're away from the Northway!)
Participants : Andrea and Ken Chartier, Mo Coutant, Charlie Czech, Paul DietershagenRosemarie and Todd Earl, Jason Finn, Mike George, Mark Janey, Barbara Jefts, Mary Knutson, Licia Mackey, Ann & Kevin McCullough, Andrew and Anne Paolano.
Skylight Sat, Aug 6, 2011, Ellen DuBois
- A fun trip with a small group, we were very lucky with the weather, as it was mostly cloudy with occasional sunshine. We ended up doing Grey Peak after Skylight (after placing our obligatory rock on the uber cairn), instead of the Haystack option. Distant views were hazy, but otherwise it was a great 360 view on Skylight. The herd path to Grey was in good shape. It was a busy day on the peaks and everyone was having fun. Particpants: Tom DuBois, Patricia Lockwood, Frank Gandhi, and Ellen DuBois.
Gothics & Sawteeth Sun, Aug 7, 2011, Lorraine MacKenzie
- We defied the rain and won. Our positive thinking blew away the clouds from the summit to reveal spectacular views. The slides on Gothics were spectacular.
Participants Erica Halbrook, Sue Keely, Joanne Walczak, Colleen Downing, Ravi Verma, Rich Holms, Paul Etu, Jack Whitney, Sandy Yellen, Klaus Sommerlatte, Lorraine MacKenzie
Goodnow Mt. Fire Tower Sat, Aug 13, 2011, Rich Crammond
- What a great day to be on the trail! It's a good thing we went up in the tower cab when we first got to the top of Goodnow because about five minutes later there was a steady flow of other hikers going up the tower also. There were 91 signed in at the trail head after us! EEKS! Highlights of this hike were the great view and the falcons we saw. Thanks to Rich and Sue for hiking along. It just doesn't get any better.
Participants : Rich Speidel, Sue Howard, and Rich Crammond.
YMG - Street & Nye - High Peaks Sun, Aug 14, 2011, Jonathan Lane and Andrew Benaquista
- Canceled
Evening Paddle Tue, Aug 16, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- We continued paddling sections of the Hudson River and this week went from the Spier Falls launch site down to the coves. This was many participants favorite section of the Hudson. It's beautiful in the fall as well, so we may have to return!
Participants : John Annis, Mo Coutant, Charlie and Linda Czech, Paul Dietershagen, Mike George, Mary and Roy Knutson, Licia Mackey, Joy Muller McCoola, Christy Phelan, Malina Stawarz, Jan Stephens, Bill Thomas, and Rudy Tomasik.
Evening Paddle Tue, Aug 30, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- All was calm, warm and sunny for our paddle. No sign of the destruction Irene had left in her wake. Linda and Charlie Czech had visited the eagle family on the pond earlier this summer. Charlie took a break from the hum of his generator (power was still out) to guide us on the 30th. George, revived after clearing downed trees Monday, arrived with his GPS and map of our previous visit. We headed toward Conklingville Dam scanning the tops of the pines on the left shore. Our search was easy, as the hungry screaching of a lone fledgling led us to the nest. That fellow had inched his way out on a limb near the nest just left of Breen Brook. A fisherman confirmed the bounty of fish, but there was no sign of the eagle family fishing for dinner. 'Twas great to have a close up view. We paddled past Hadley's Town beach to the dam on placid waters. Neither Conklingville nor Stewart's dams were releasing water (Ray B. you'd be safe.) since the Hudson was at flood stage. Charlie and George had me giggling with tales of previous outings and creative chapter fund raisers enroute back to our launch.
Participants : Licia Mackey, Charlie Czech, George Sammons
September 2011
Pilot Knob Ridge Preserve Sun, Sep 4, 2011, Roger Fulton
- With a couple from St. Augustine, Florida we climbed the 600 feet and got a great view of Lake George. Hot day, but well worth the climb.
Lost Gorge Bushwack Sat, Sep 10, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- After Hurricane Irene, and tropical storm Lee, the road is closed and the (gorge) trail is underwater. Sorry to cancel.
Evening Paddle Thu, Sep 15, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we paddled around Lake Luzerne and then up to the 1st beaver dam along the inlet. It was a chilly night and it felt good to warm up with a hot meal at the UpRiver Cafe! Great paddle then great food...can't beat it!
Participants : Mo Coutant, Paul Dietershagen, Sue Jefts, Licia & Steve Mackey, Anne & Kevin McCullough, Jim Ralston, George Sammons, Jim Shaad
Snowy Mt. Fire Tower Sat, Sep 17, 2011, Rich Crammond
- What a great day to be on the trail in the Adirondacks. Cool temps and no bugs were ok by me! Hiking with old hiking bud Kevin Cox was a plus too. His son Paul came along also. The years are going by for sure! Highlights of this outing were hiking this mountain again after 20 years and the great views we had from the tower cab. It just doesn't get any better.
Participants : Kevin Cox, Paul Cox, Charlie Czech, and Rich Crammond.
Seymour, High Peak Sun, Sep 18, 2011, Alison Darbee
- Seymour proved to be a great day in the woods. The temperatures were in the mid 30’s or so when we started out, great for a fast paced hike! We had a leisurely lunch at the top with clear views from the spot a little past the summit. Great group of hikers and everyone seemed pleased with the day we had! And thanks to Joe Murphy for stepping up as Co-leader.
Participants : David Crouse, Holly Lee, Dan Stec, Jon Laurin, Marsha Noble, Lynne Nagengast, Dave Nagengast, Rita Cedar, Joe Murphy, and Alison Darbee.
5th Peak Lean to - Tongue Mtn Range Sun, Sep 18, 2011, Lorraine MacKenzie

Coles Woods - Fall Wildflower Trek - Glens Falls Sun, Sep 18, 2011, Roger Fulton

ADK Monthly Monday Geocache trip Mon, Sep 19, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- This month we returned to French Mtn to look for a few caches in the area that Sarah had not found. We introduced Lisa to geocaching and she was a big help!

YMG - Cliffs and Falls Sat, Sep 24, 2011, Jonathan Lane
- Canceled due to trail closures.
Pharaoh Lake Wilderness Area Trail Work Sat, Sep 24, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- Ok...not exactly easy! But it was rewarding. 7 of us moved just over 30 boards that were used to rebuild a bridge that was washed downstream when a beaver dam broke just upstream during Hurricane Irene. We made 3 trips and I was almost lapped by Steve who was always carrying 3x as much as me, but I think his legs are twice as long! We also used the shovel that Steve brought to drain some of the mud holes on the road/trail into the sign in box. The mosquitos...who invited them?
Participants : Bill Bechtel, Jim & Mo Coutant, Alison Darbee, Steve Mackey, Wayne Richter, Dave Zuka,
High Peak - Haystack Sun, Sep 25, 2011, Joe Murphy and Ray O'Conor
- A full 12 hour day including headlamps for part of the group, but we couldn't have asked for better weather or views on top of an amazing mountain! The trail was muddy and wet at some points, with some fun stream crossings. We enjoyed a treat of pumpkin chocolate chip cookies with cream cheese frosting from Marsha.
Participants : Alison Darbee, Colleen Downing, Dan Kane, Susan Keely, Jon Laurin, Holly Lee, Joe Murphy, Marsha Noble, Ray O'Conor, Jeff Reale, Dan Stec, and Ravi Verma.
Family-Friendly Shelving Rock Falls Sun, Sep 25, 2011, Jill Gruben
- The weather held out for a great walk in the woods! Thank you to Mo Coutant for co-leading! The mosquitoes were out in full force, giving all of us some welts. But that didn't detract from the enjoyable conversations, comraderie and chocolate chip cookies. Everyone relaxed on the rocks along the Lake George shore, breathing in the view while Wasana took a dip! Along the trail, we saw many varieties of mushrooms in various shapes, sizes and colors. There were also quite a few caterpillers which we thought might be albino wolly-bears. It turns out they were hickory tussocks!
Participants : Susan Kearing, Maureen Coutant, Carol Schupp Starr, Cathy and Wasana Fleming, Michael, Jill, Adam, Maya and Ian Rubinstein
October 2011
High Peaks, Nippletop and Dial Sat, Oct 1, 2011, Wayne Richter and Alison Darbee
- Wayne Richter with Alison Darbee, 8 participants. Although the leader denies all knowledge of an e-mail message in which he supposedly promised great fall foliage and some wonderful views, eight hikers somehow braved a weather forecast promising rain and wind to head for Nippletop and Dial. After assemgling in the Ausable Club parking area, we headed out under low clouds. Light rain broke out shortly entering the forest off the Lake Road. The pond at Elk Pass was truly beautiful as the water and mist enhanced the fall colors. By the time we reached the exposed shoulder on the way to the ridge, the rain had quit but the wind was ferocious, and the layers came on. Nippletop was blustery and lost in the clouds. We lingered only long enough to point out the peaks that first timers could not see. We continued over Dial and Bear Den Mountain in the clouds until well below Noonmark shoulder where the rain started up again. The stream below the trail as we approached Lake Road was a visual treat with its many cascades. We had a cheerful, cohesive group throughout and definitely had a fine time.
Participants : Alison Darbee, Owen Grant, Jon Laurin, Susan Keely, Eleanor Molinary, Marsha Noble, Wayne Richter, Joanne Walczak.
Roostercomb Mt. Sun, Oct 2, 2011, Sandy Yellen
- Canceled due to rain and flooded conditions,
November 2011
Midweek outing Tue, Nov 8, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- What a great way to start the season! We had nice weather, great company, and a great trail to a wonderful view. Whoever said Shelving Rock Mountain doesn't have a great view? They just don't know where to look! We loved the carriage road trail that made for a nice gradual hike up the mountain. Steve made it even nicer by doing trail work along the way! He never even saw the top but had a great time anyway ... and a better workout! Participants: Joanne Armstrong, Ellen Sheehan Card, Andrea Chartier, Mo Coutant, Anita Dingman, Licia and Steve Mackey, George and Irene Sammons, and Deb Wood.
Middle Mountain Bushwack Sat, Nov 12, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- The leader and three novice bushwackers set out on a beautiful sunny, windy day, dazzling in our blaze orange against leafless trees and dark pines. We got dryly across Fly Brook, and went coldly up Middle, flinching from the wind. After suiting up we leisurely enjoyed the views and the top. We got a peek at Jabe pond through trees, then went carefully down Middle's backside to a tributary that rejoined Fly Brook at a nice falls. Uneasily, we ascended the other side as the sun descended, and eventually found the ledges with views back across the valley to the Middle Mountain cliffs, where we'd been. Continuing toward the setting sun, we finally reached a camp, and then the old road back, and completed our loop before dark to everyone's relief! It was a great day, with a great group. You were real troopers! Participants: Jayne Bouder, Pat Marsh, Kate, and Scott Ryan.
ADK Monthly Monday Geocache Mon, Nov 14, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- This month we went a bit further than normal to check out the caches placed in the 'Last Great Shoreline' nature preserve purchased by the Lake George Land Conservancy a few years ago. It was a fairly short hike, but it was nice to check out a new area. On the way back, we discovered a really neat keystone bridge near the Lake Champlain South Bay thanks to a geocache being placed there. Participants: Mo Coutant, Bruce Cushing, John Earl, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, Don and Marjory Moeller, and Don Thorn.
Midweek trip Tue, Nov 15, 2011, Maureen Coutant

Lake George Gazebo Overlook and Falls Sat, Nov 19, 2011, Reg Prouty
- We made it to the gazebo in only 50 minutes, so after a quick break, we were off to the waterfall accompanied by a dog named Buddy. He is a neighborhood dog who follows all hikers who hike this loop. There was quite a bit of water going over the falls so we circled to the top and took a few pictures. Ten hikers had a great fall day in the woods. Participants: Reg Prouty, Margie Litwin, Joanne Armstrong, Virginia Carluccio, Cathy Flemming, Pallavi Kahai, Ravi Verma, Ann Hurley, Barbara Tomko, and Don Washburn.
Roostercomb Mountain Hike/Snowshoe Sun, Nov 20, 2011, Sandy Yellen
- It turned out to be a rather warm day but the wind at the top could blow you off. Because we couldn't get very far out to enjoy the views we decided to climb Snow Mountain on the way down. We got our reward after all! Then we took a side trip to Keene to see the damage done by Irene and a visit to Stewarts (of course!) Participants: Stuart Kurtz, Ravi Verma, Dan Monroe, Spud Perkins, Pat Desbiens, and Sandy Yellen.
Midweek outing Tue, Nov 22, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- Again this week this was a new walk for some in the group, but a nice quick return trip for most of us to one of Glens Falls hidden treasures. We were all glad to get out before the early snowfall that evening! Participants: Joanne Armstrong, Mo Coutant, Anita Dingman, Barb and Randy Glenn, Ginger and Joe Kelterborn, Sarah King, Licia Mackey, George Sammons, and Bill Schwarz.
Turkey Trot #13 (Saratoga Battlefield Hike) Thu, Nov 24, 2011, Rich Crammond

YMG - Winter Holiday Kickoff Sun, Nov 27, 2011, Jonathan Lane and Kiki Kelly
- What a beautiful day! We hiked up Mt. Jo, enjoyed some awesome views, had story time, took some funny pics, then made our way back down. We stopped into the Loj and learned some history about the area, including Mt. Jo, then headed into Lake Placid for lunch. After lunch some people headed home while some decided to do some holiday shopping in beautiful Lake Placid. Participants: Bill Barton, Erica Halbrook, Debbie Hummel, Marge Huseman, Kiki Kelly, Jonathan Lane, Rachel Luch, Ranay Peek, Mark Rye, Jen Shepherd, Ravi Verma, and Pallavi Kahai.
Midweek outing Tue, Nov 29, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- We switched this trip to a shorter hike in the Van Dusen Preserve in Queensbury. Berry Pond is open to hunting, so we didn't want to spoil their chances with our noisy bunch! We also hoped to avoid rain by doing a shorter hike, but the rain came early and we got wet off and on. We bushwhacked to the overlook and then made our way down sliding on the slippery oak leaves. Participants: Joanne Armstrong, Rene Clarke, Mo Coutant, Anita Dingman, Barb and Randy Glenn, Eric Kranz, Licia and Steve Mackey, Becky and Tom Meath, George and Irene Sammons, Ellen Sheehan-Card, and Chuck Wilkison.
Northwest Bay Uplands Tract Sun, Dec 4, 2011, Jayne Bouder
- We spent a beautiful partly cloudy breezy day connecting the trail-marker dots (not always easily) and settling comfortably at scenic places. All was well- we were out by dark! Participants: Kerry Belencia, Jayne Bouder, Kathy McAuley, Anne Mc Mahon, Rich Myette, Ravi Verma, Tim and Mary Ward.

- Cancelled due to illness
Wilton Wildlife Park Hike/Snowshoe Sat, Dec 10, 2011, Rich Crammond
- Just a great day to be outdoors in the park. We saw very few birds but the old wooden silo along the trail was a real nice thing to see from the past farming days. The highlight for me was looking at all the little fry in the stream. I think they were stocked there. Thanks to my fellow hikers for sharing their day. Participants: Alan Gee, Liz Gee, Buphm Harris, and Rich Crammond
YMG - Goodnow Mt - Fire Tower Sun, Dec 11, 2011, Jonathan Lane and Rachel Luch
- What a great, festive day in the woods! There was a light covering of snow on the ground. A few of our hikers even dressed up for the occasion with reindeer antlers and a blinking red nose. Kiki attempted to get us all singing Christmas carols on the hike. Then upon reaching the summit, who do you think was there to meet us? Santa and a faithful reindeer, that's who! Santa and reindeer (ADKers Erica Halbrook and Bill Barton, respectively) greeted us with smiles and Christmas goodies to celebrate reaching the summit. Despite a couple antler malfunctions, it was an awesome day! Hikers: Ania Gaguine, Pallavi Kahai, Kiki Kelly, Jonathan Lane, Tricia Lockwood, Rachel Luch, Jen Shepherd, and Ravi Verma.
Midmonth Monday Geocache Mon, Dec 12, 2011, Maureen Coutant and Sarah King
- This month we hiked to Shelving Rock Mountain to get a couple of caches along the trail. It was a gorgeous day and it's a great hike. The views were spectacular just south of the summit and down the path to the overlook where we found one of the caches. Great day. Participants: Mo Coutant, Stuart Delman, Liz Gee,Sarah King, and Laurie LaFond
Midweek outing Tue, Dec 13, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- This week we joined the Moreau State Park Educator, Rebecca, on a trip to Lake Ann. Many of us had never hiked to this spot in the park. A local resident also came on the trip and filled us in on some park history while Rebecca pointed out other interesting areas. A couple of cranberries were even found along the edge of Lake Ann (really more of a pond). Participants: Joanne Armstrong, Ray Bouchard, Patty Campbell, Ellen Sheehan Card, Andrea Chartier, Mo Coutant, Ginger and Joe Kelterborn, Steve Mackey, Deb Wood, + Linda and Rebecca
Midweek outing Tue, Dec 20, 2011, Maureen Coutant
- Wow! What a big turnout for the week before Christmas. This group had their priorities straight and headed out for a walk around Moreau Lake instead of the mall. We had a beautiful day, a nice walk, and ended at the warming hut sharing cookies. We all had a great time! Participants: Joanne Armstrong, Patty Campbell, Andrea Chartier, Mo Coutant, Karen Dorfler, Larry Fox, Susan Howard, Ginger and Joe Kelterborn, Sarah King, Licia and Steve Mackey, Ellen and Jim O'Hara, Bill Schwarz, Diane Sante, and Deb Wood.
